Editorial Strange Weather

Those of you who experienced the storm that hit Ada and surrounding areas of Oklahoma on the early

morning of June 18th might have mistaken your current location for a coastal community bracing for a hurricane. The 80 mph straight line winds that ripped through neighborhoods like mine caused havoc for both families and power companies. These dangerous winds are rare to me, but not completely unknown. I've experience these natural weather occurrences a few times but never to this magnitude. In fact, while speaking with my power company, they admitted that they were responding to more and more wind damage calls. I know Oklahoma is known as a windy state, and is in fact a large supplier of wind power, but these localized bursts are different. To me it was like bomb went off. When the first sound of the wind burst arrived, it was alarming, but as it continued to increase in power it became more frighting. The aftermath was costly but, it could have been a lot worse. The important thing is no one got hurt. This makes me feel very blessed. I'm neither a conspiracy theorist nor a blind believer, but I can't help take note of what is, at least to me, strange weather. And as an Oklahoman, I'm pretty accustomed to strange weather. It seems like, however, the recent weather has been out of place. For example, I can't remember needing a light jacket on a mid-June morning, but I've used one several times this past June. For so long, it seemed like Oklahoma weather went from a week or two of spring straight to dry hot summer. Now it's as if I live in a rain forest, and again it could be much worse because damage from flooding has impacted many areas in Oklahoma. When it comes to weather though it's the same all over the world. Aren't we all just trying to seek shelter from the next storm? It's one thing that binds us all together as humans, and it doesn't matter if its a hurricane or a tornado, the damage weather can inflict impacts all. Additionally, weather doesn't recognize a border, a religion, or social status. When weather destroys, it does so indiscriminately. So it's no surprise that we talk about the weather so much. When you think about it, what's the one topic complete strangers can immediately talk about? Weather, strange weather. Mark and Kathy Horn of

M&K Horn Farms LLC specialize in producing high quality Bermuda grass for their clients' livestock needs. The high protein content combined with the lack of weeds and stickers makes their premium Bermuda highly palatable; therefore, sought after by stables and equine enthusiasts. The Horns began doing business with Great Plains Kubota when they needed parts for their Krone square baler. Then, with the help of his Territory Manager, Josh Long, Mark Horn gradually made the switch to Vermeer balers. Mark utilizes a variety of hay equipment for his Bermuda operation, including square balers, a Vermeer 605 and 604 round baler, telehandlers, swathers, and even a machine that unravels large round bales to make square bales. Their customers have the option of round bales, all of which have cover edge surface wrap, large segmented square bales, and small easy to handle square bales. The Horns like most farmers are constantly looking for a better solution to a problem, and thus far their Vermeer balers have provided them with just that. So when Mark was approached by GP about the possibility of attending a demo of the new Vermeer ZR5 self-propelled baler, he went beyond and extended the use of his own farm as the location of the demo. With the assistance of Vermeer representatives like Mark Branderhorst, Nathan Guess, and Aaron Hicks,

enthusiasm." The farm is a lot different than it was in the beginning although some things have remained the same. In fact the current office was Mark's childhood home, but the crops and no-till methods M&K Farms implements have reshaped the wide open landscape. It was in the early 2000s that Mark Horn and his father decided to make a big push toward growing Bermuda grass and on July 3, 2003, the first Bermuda sprig was transplanted on the farm. Now, years later the farm exclusively produces the highest quality Midland 99 available. The farm is a family operation but Mark & Kathy do have employees. Kody Davis, Ranch Manager at M&K Farms, has been with the Horns for 10 years. Davis helps with all aspects of the farm including GPL Summer 2019

managing M&K's small herd of Angus cattle. His knowledge and expertise of farming and ranching make him a valuable member of the M&K Farm team. The most important part of the M&K farm puzzle is the Horn's faith in the Lord, because through Him everything is made possible. Mark has recently become a cancer survivor and he'll be the first to tell you that all the glory and success goes to the Lord. Thank You For The Fleas Sometimes in our lives we have issues that come

along and pester us. Sometimes those issues are really big, difficult things that God places in our lives. We can rest assured on God’s Word that He will “never leave us or forsake us” (Deuteronomy 31:6), but it is still difficult to live our days in pain and agony. This story that follows helps us gain perspective in our hearts to know that God is working even in the midst of pain. He is “working all things for our good” (Romans 8:28), and that means even the difficult things are producing something good for us. Our job is to “trust in the Lord with all our hearts, and don’t lean on our own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). I pray this story will minister to your life in the same way that it ministered to mine. Corrie Ten Boom in her book “The Hiding Place” details this story... Corrie and her sister Betsie had been imprisoned by the Nazis for hiding Jews behind the wall of their Holland home, and Nazi prison conditions were unbearable. Corrie writes: "Barracks 8 was in the quarantine compound. Next to us--perhaps as a deliberate warning to newcomers-were located the punishment barracks. From there, all day long and often into the night, came the sounds of hell itself. They were not the sounds of anger, or of any human emotion, but of a cruelty altogether detached: blows landing in regular rhythm, screams keeping pace. We would stand in our ten-deep ranks with our hands trembling at our sides, longing to jam them against our ears, to make the sounds stop. "It grew harder and harder. Even within these four walls there was too much misery, too much seemingly pointless suffering. Every day something else failed to make sense, something else grew too heavy." Yet, in the midst of the suffering, the women prisoners around Corrie and Betsie found comfort in the little Bible studies they held in the barracks. Corrie writes they gathered around the Bible "like waifs clustered around a blazing fire…The blacker the night around us grew, the brighter and truer and more beautiful burned the Word of God." When they were moved to Barracks 28, Corrie was horrified by the fact that their reeking, straw-bed GPL Summer 2019

platforms swarmed with fleas. How could they live in such a place? It was Betsie who discovered God's answer: "Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus." That's it, Corrie! That's His answer. "Give thanks in all circumstances!" That's what we can do. We can start right now to thank God for every single thing about this new barracks!' "I stared at her; then around me at the dark, foulaired room…" They thanked God for the fact they were together. They thanked God they had a Bible. They even thanked God for the horrible crowds of prisoners, that more people would be able to hear God's Word. And then, Betsie thanked God for the fleas. "The fleas! This was too much. 'Betsie, there's no way even God can make me grateful for a flea.' "'"Give thanks in all circumstances,"' she quoted. 'It doesn't say, "in pleasant circumstances." Fleas are part of this place where God has put us.' "And so we stood between tiers of bunks and gave thanks for fleas. But this time I was sure Betsie was wrong." It turned out that Betsie was not wrong; the fleas were a nuisance, but a blessing after all. The women were able to have Bible studies in the barracks with a great deal of freedom, never bothered by supervisors coming in and harassing them. They finally discovered that it was the fleas that kept those supervisors out. Through those fleas, God protected the women from abuse and harassment. Dozens of desperate women were free to hear the comforting, hope-giving Word of God. Through those fleas, God protected the women from much worse things and made sure they had their deepest, truest needs met. We all have "fleas" in our lives. We all have those things that we can see no use for, things that are obviously horrible, unpleasant, painful things that we want gone. No life is free of "fleas", but if Corrie and Betsie can be our examples, God can use even these nasty insects for our protection and blessing. 13

INVESTING IN SERVICE

A thriving service shop is full of diversity which is why Great Plains Kubota invests in both tools and talent for their

service departments. Recently, one GP's service technicians completed a two year WEDA program at OSU Okmulgee. Great Plains living asked Laredo Beal more about his experience and how it will help him further his career. GPL - How long have you worked for Great Plains Kubota, and how did you get started here? L - Probably May of 2018. Mainly, after enrolling in the WEDA or Western Equipment Dealers Association program at Okmulgee they encouraged us to find a dealer that would help sponsor me. I came to Ada and talked with Bill Clark, and he said he'd be happy to sponsor me. GPL - What is WEDA? L - Okmulgee offers several different diesel tech courses. WEDA focuses on agricultural equipment. GPL - What made you decide the field of service for your career? L - I always liked working on vehicles, and equipment around the ranch. I really just wanted to learn more. Baling hay and working on construction equipment with my dad is something I've always done. GPL - What sort of equipment do you enjoy working on best? L - Well, my family uses Kubota equipment from GP, so I'd say Kubota, but of the Kubota equipment I like working on and with the Kubota SVL track loaders. GPL- Did you get what you wanted from school? L - I graduated at the end of June in a class of 14 people. The diesel technician course provided me with great hands on training. At school, we actually trained with a Kubota M7-171. Really, it wouldn't take much for me to get my bachelors degree. GPL - Where do you see yourself in 5 years? L- Well, obviously I see myself at Great Plains Kubota but with a better knowledge of every machine that comes through our shop. GPL - So what does Laredo Beal do when he isn't working in the shop? L - I team rope with my dad a lot. We practice all the time trying to gear up for competitions. We've actually gone to finals in Vegas a couple of times. I should have more time to practice now that I've completed school. GPL Summer 2019

AMV Valve, the SVL65-2 makes running any attachment that utilizes auxiliary hydraulics even easier, especially attachments such as grapple buckets, 4 in 1 buckets, and hydraulic augers, to name a few. The Clark family is always looking for a more natu-

ral solution. Natural is a term often loosely thrown around, but in this instance natural is referred to as originating from the source of creation. Bill Clark of Sunrise Ranch says: "God's plan is the best plan. So, follow the natural order and let His creations do their job, thereby fixing problems that we have created. This is the idea behind the grazing practices we utilize on our ranch." Recently Sunrise Ranch added sheep to their heard of cattle to help primarily with improving their grasslands. But adding sheep to a herd of Angus doesn't come without initial adjustments. Multi-Species grazing is not a new concept. Old McDonald took advantage of multi-species grazing, but unlike his simple song, there are certain aspects that help a diverse farm flourish. Here we will take a look at 5 considerations the Clarks (and anyone considering multi-species grazing) must consider. Forage - All plants are created differently, as are the diets of individual species. Example, the diet of sheep is much different than that of cattle. For instance, their diet consists of about 1/3 grass, 1/3 forbes, and 1/3 browse. The diet of cattle on the other hand, is made of almost all grass, and very little browse. Sunrise Ranch is positioning itself to raise 100% grass fed beef. They are doing so by creating a foundation that literally starts from the ground up. Good soil health, and productive grasslands go hand in hand. So in this instance the sheep actually improve the grazing for the cows. 24

Shelter - Creating shelter for stock is always a consideration, but in the case of sheep no actual structure is needed. What is needed is protection, but what is shelter if not protection. At Sunrise Ranch there are three Great Pyrenees dogs that live entirely with the herd of sheep. Night and day these protectors watch over the flock, keeping predators at bay, and everyone in line. Fencing - It is critical in a forage based operation that animals are eating in specific areas. So to keep the sheep on their side of the fence, the Clarks added two extra rows of wire to their current fence structures. Handling - The use of handling equipment for their sheep is minimal. Eventually they would like to have a mini corral specifically for their sheep but for the time being the cattle corrals work sufficiently. Water - Water, as it is in most cases, is the most difficult aspect to fit in the plan. At the time the sheep and cattle are maintained by natural water sources on the ranch. The Goal - When adding another species to any operation, ask yourself, "what's the goal." What do you want to accomplish. For the Clarks, it's solving a problem naturally. The sheep eat plants that would normally have to be sprayed with herbicide, therefore reducing costs while improving forage all of which will eventually generate more revenue. The ultimate goal though...get as close to God's natural plan as possible and let His design do the work. GPL Summer 2019

Greek Seasoned T-Bone Steaks With Cucumber And Tomato Salad INGREDIENTS 1. 2 beef T-Bone Steaks, Cut 1 Inch Thick 2. 1 Medium Lemon 3. 1 Tablespoon Greek Seasoning 4. 1 Medium Cucumber Cut Lengthwise In Half, Then Into Slices 5. 2 Cups Halved Grape Tomatoes 6. 1/3 Cup Crumbled Feta Cheese 7. Salt And Pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Grate, peel, and squeeze 1 tablespoon juice from lemon. Combine Greek seasoning and lemon peel. Reserve 2 teaspoons mixture for salad. Press remaining mixture evenly onto beef steaks. 2. Place steaks on grid over medium, ash-covered coals. Grill, covered, 11 to 16 minutes (over medium heat on preheated gas grill, 15 to 19 minutes) for medium rare (145Â°F) to medium (160Â°F) doneness, turning occasionally. 3. Meanwhile, combine reserved 2 teaspoons seasoning mixture, lemon juice, cucumber, tomatoes and cheese in medium bowl, stirring to combine. Season with salt and pepper, as desired. 4. Carve steaks into slices, season with salt, and serve beef with cucumber and tomato salad.
