CITY SLICKER GARDENS

I’m what you might call an "Urban Gardener." I enjoy creating vegetable gardens for both looks and as a

alternate food source. The ever increasing cost of food, especially high quality food, was the initial catalyst for my recent gardening efforts. I say recent, but really for the past 5 years I’ve dedicated a large amount of my spare time towards creating an esthetically pleasing garden and produce habitat. My grandpa once told me that produce has to meet certain criteria to be effectively sold. The criteria was; it looked good, had a long shelf life, and it shipped well, but no where on this list was that it needed to taste good! Homegrown veggies are second to none when it comes to flavor, so as my family's chef, having fresh ingredients on hand is one of the biggest benefits of tending a garden. My garden is situated in my side yard as I call it, and is home to a variety of raised beds, large planters, and hanging pots that are integrated with both floral and perennial vegetation. This year I plan on adding even more additions to benefit my fauna, and yard as a whole. Bio-diversity creates more bio-diversity. So by having a variety of plants I'll surely attract other life, making my entire side yard a lively environment to spend time in. Which, this is a good contrast to the concrete and brick that surrounds my city dwelling landscape. Utilizing space is a major consideration when creating an urban garden. Of course a good mulch pile is a necessity and must be factored in, but adding other elements such as a bee box, bird feeders, fruit trees, or even a worm bed could really add to your gardening experience. When maximized, an urban garden can produce vegetables consistently and for a long period of time. This year I produced tomatoes well into December, partly because I made them easy to care for and maintain. When you can simply water on your way in the door from work, your season can get extended. Other planting ideas could be growing in a window, on your porch, balcony, or even roof. Although growing vegetables in containers won't typically yield as much produce as good fertile ground, the supply will still be adequate. There are benefits to growing in containers though. For one, caring and grooming the plants is much easier. In my opinion well groomed vegetables can be just as attractive as flowers. Why can't food be beautiful? Secondly, caring for a large garden can become time consuming. As summer drags on gardens become more susceptible to the changing environment. When using containers be sure to plant in a container that will support your vegetation. Shallow rooted vegetables can easily handle a smaller pot while tomatoes will fair better in something like a whiskey barrel. Always consider drainage when using pots. If it can’t drain the plant will drown. On the same hand, potted plants require more watering so there is a balance to maintain. Some alternative ideas would be planting vegetables in 5 gallon buckets or even hanging pots in some instances. Another benefit to gardening in the metro is that it doesn't take a lot of large equipment. However larger city gardens can be installed and tilled with rental equipment, like tillers, tractors, and discs from GP Rents. As a hunter I’ve always had more of a red thumb than a green one. But, these last few summers have proven to me that growing a vegetable garden that produces quality fruit can be just as rewarding as harvesting wild protein. The satisfaction and benefits from producing your own food and knowing where it’s coming from is endless.

FARM STRESS

Managing Farm and Ranch Stress in 2022 By Laici Neumann and Brent Brewer

Even in the best of times, farming can be an incred-

ibly high-stress occupation. Every day, farmers and ranchers deal with high-risk situations, including the use of large machinery and the handling of unpredictable livestock. In addition to significant risk to life and limb, farmers put in long hours of physical labor well into their later years. Many of their days are spent in the elements—cold, windy winters or the hot, enduring summers—while also worrying about drought, flood, wildfires and snow. When these long hours of risky physical labor in the harsh elements are combined with any number of additional stressors, farmers and ranchers can stress to a breaking point. Often piled on is the additional stressors of the modern world—financial stress, worries over volatile markets—and personal stressors—mid-life crises, marital problems, or the health of a parent, spouse or others, especially if they’re involved in the farming operation. Farm transitions can also cause intense stress. Many farms have been handed down through generations, leading to the additional stress of maintaining a legacy and the setbacks that can come when valued members of the family want to retire and cash out of the business. Add in additional concerns over alcohol or drug abuse in a family or community, medical marijuana and other substances interacting with medications, or untreated mental and physical health issues you could have a recipe for disaster. According to a University of Iowa study, farmers and ranchers have a suicide rate that averages 3.5 times that of the general population. That rate translated to more than 450 producer suicides across nine Midwestern states from 2014 to 2018. While the epicenter of the mental health crisis for farmers is the Midwest, other areas of the country are seeing an increase as well. America's farmers and ranchers have been dealing with a lot lately. As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, the need for rural mental health assistance continues to grow. Pandemic-related stressors such as volatile markets, supply chain issues, and skyrocketing input costs have increased concerns about farm stress and the mental health of agricultural producers. GPL Spring 2022

These concerns are well-founded. Today’s rural suicide statistics are reaching heights not seen since the 1980s Farm Crisis. While the urban suicide rate has increased by 3% since 2017, the suicide rate among farmers has increased 27% in that same amount of time. Although farmers and ranchers experience higher levels of psychological distress than the general population, they are less likely to seek help for mental health issues. For those who do seek help, mental health resources are likely not readily available in their rural area. Perhaps most importantly, the likelihood of a farmer or rancher reaching a mental health professional who understands farming is slim to none. The stress of a farming operation is difficult to explain to those outside the industry. Even when producers can connect with a mental health professional, the cultural barrier often causes farmers and ranchers to feel misunderstood or, unfortunately, to actually be misunderstood. Frankly, the stress of a farming operation is difficult to explain. It’s just a different world. Because of this cultural divide, there is now a nationwide initiative to help farmers and ranchers find the mental health services they need. Farm organizations, agricultural lenders and other “front line” groups who interface with farmers and ranchers every day are working together to provide resources for America’s farming community. Efforts of this nationwide initiative include normalizing mental health discussions and treatments, helping farmers and ranchers manage their stress loads, and training rural citizens to recognize the symptoms of stress overload. Based in Oklahoma City, American Farmers & Ranchers (AFR) Cooperative is a general farm organization leading the farm stress initiative in Oklahoma and also providing assistance to farmers and ranchers in surrounding states. The AFR Farm Stress Management Team is a group of agricultural producers who are trained and ready to work directly with producers in mental distress. Members of the team are certified in Mental Health First Aid USA. The goal of the Farm Stress Management Team is twofold. First is to train others in Oklahoma to identify stress in their friends and neighbors. Secondly is to be the front line for

7

mental health crises related to agriculture in Oklahoma. If a farmer or rancher in mental distress calls the hotline, they get a real farmer or rancher—a person just like them, who understands volatile markets, loss of livestock, failed crops, and dreaded calls from lenders. One AFR Farm Stress Team member—Brent Brewer from Salt Fork, OK has farmed for decades, including through the 1980s Farm Crisis. Brewer has already taken many intense farm stress calls. The reasons for the tremendous stress these producers are under varies. One farmer couldn’t find a market for his crop. Another’s stress load was intensified by the death of family member. Another had a clinical mental health condition. Another’s bank was threatening to call in his loan. The list goes on. For each of these high-intensity phone calls, Brewer becomes an unofficial “first responder.” He evaluates the urgency and severity of the situation. If deemed necessary, he keeps the farmer on the phone until he or another member of the Farm Stress team can get to their location. Once the situation is diffused, Brewer helps the

8

producer find clinical help or a counselor in the near future. Every circumstance has been different, but an incredible stress level was common to them all. While women are more likely to admit thoughts of suicide, men are quicker to act on those thoughts without showing any signs of stress. With every call, Brewer is certain his Mental Health First Aid training helped save a life. Brewer has also gotten many calls that were not urgent. Some farm families just need someone to talk to or help finding a resource for a specific situation. Sometimes a lender or farm cooperative manager is concerned about one of their producers. Some are single call conversations while some Brewer stays in touch with regularly. No matter the circumstances, all calls are welcome. For each call, Brewer tries to educate producers and their families to recognize stress in their own lives and to deal with their stress in nonharmful, productive ways. PRIORITIZING SELF CARE Stress affects our lives every day and it’s natural to get overloaded from time to time. But, if you’re expe-

GPL Spring 2022

riencing chronic unbearably high stress levels, finding effective coping mechanisms is a must. Here are some tips Brewer uses to keep his stress levels in check: • Get enough sleep - Sleep is a must to maintain a healthy body and a lack of quality sleep can have a dramatic impact on your stress level. When you’re stressed, you may not be able to get the rest you need. Even if you manage to get enough hours of sleep, the brain may not fully rest even if you are physically tired. • Eat right - A good diet and exercise habits are important for your overall mental health. If you’re a farmer or rancher, there’s a good chance you’re getting enough exercise and you’re probably soaking up plenty of sunshine. But, what about your diet? Try to eat a well-balanced diet. Your regular doctor can help guide you in what foods can help optimize your physical and mental wellbeing. • Socialize - Finding time to socialize can be difficult for many farmers and ranchers, but even small interactions can make a big difference. In many cases, stress levels can be decreased just by spending more time with family and friends. Church and community

GPL Spring 2022

are also big helps to brightening your spirits. • Change locations - Separate yourself from locations of stress and from situations that feel like they mount and multiply. Regular outings or afternoon trips away from the farm can be vital to recharge your batteries. Date nights or other nights out let you leave your problems behind even for a few hours. Again, finding time is a challenge for farmers and ranchers. If needed, focus on short stints of high-quality time to get you started. • Talk to someone - It’s 2022; it’s okay to talk about your mental health. Don’t be afraid to tell others you’re struggling. Simply sharing that information with another human being will ease the stress load. The more times you share your feelings, the easier it will get.

CHECKING IN For many communities, suicide and thoughts of self-harm seem like a distant problem. However, one in every five people in the United States are living with a mental health condition. Many people are hesitant to admit they’ve had thoughts of self-harm until they hear this statistic. Only then do their stories of incredible stress and their near inability to cope come to light. Like thoughts of self-harm, stress overload and depression are often difficult to admit. It may take a friend or family member checking in to bring the situation to light. What signs of stress should you look for in farmers and ranchers? • Attending fewer social gatherings such as church, morning coffee groups or school activities or being abnormally reserved at these gatherings. • Avoiding everyday interactions like visiting with acquaintances at the local convenience store or with fellow farmers on the road. • Appearing unkempt or otherwise off from their normal appearance. • Loosing interest in work activities, such as properly tending to even small farm chores. If you notice any of these signs in a farmer or rancher you know, reach out to them. Ask them how they’re feeling and check in regularly.

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO? Are you concerned about a farmer or rancher in your community? The AFR Farm Stress Hotline will connect you with Brent Brewer or another farmer or rancher to talk with you about next steps. Are you are interested in serving your community as a farm stress contact point? Brewer can connect you with courses that teach the skills needed to understand sources of stress, learn warning signs of stress and suicide, identify effective communication strategies, reduce stigma related to mental health, and connect farmers and ranchers with appropriate mental health and other resources. Are you a member of an industry and community group? The AFR Farm Stress Management Team would like to partner with you to increase farm stress management skills. The goal is to be known to rural lenders, coop managers and agribusiness owners, so they know to call the AFR team when the need arises. If your organization is interested in a Zoom or in-person training session, contact us via the hotline or at farmstress@afrmic.com. MOST IMPORTANTLY! If you are having difficulty coping with the stress associated with your farm, ranch or agribusiness, call the National Suicide Hotline at 800273-8255 or the AFR team directly at 833-FARM-911. A fellow farmer or rancher is ready to talk with you directly about your situation, farming stress and possible solutions.

BUYING KNOWN BULL GENETICS ADDS By Steve Swigert

12

Table 2: Performance and income differences between bulls

for a cattle operation is what bull to buy. When cattle producers make bull purchases, several factors should be considered: number of bulls, type, acquisition time, age, source, quality and cost. For this analysis, it is assumed the purchaser can do a good job of analyzing a bull’s phenotype (physical characteristics) prior to purchase. If a producer does not have the necessary skills to visually evaluate the bull, the producer should either ask for help or purchase from operations or sales with breeding soundness or bull health guarantees. How many bulls to purchase is directly related to cow herd size. The typical bull-to-cow ratio is one bull to 25 or 30 cows, but this can vary by pasture size, property roughness and bull age. Producers with small cow herds are challenged to keep bull cost down while making sure all cows get bred. Having only one bull increases the risk of open cows for small herds because the bull might have develop a breeding problem. With high value calves, an operation cannot generally afford to have open cows. When selecting the type of bull to purchase, bull genotype (genetic makeup) should be selected to complement a cow herd to produce desirable calves. Knowing the genetic potential of the calves helps a producer determine whether to retain ownership past weaning. Uniform calves (both type and color) command higher prices than non-uniform calves at sale time. Planning ahead usually results in a better selection of bulls with better genetics. Buying earlier gives the bull time to acclimate to the region, the ranch and the handling procedures of the operation. Also, buying early allows for additional growth of 12 to 18 month old bulls, which is the typical age of many bulls in today’s market. For spring-calving cow herds, this would mean purchasing bulls in the fall when the number of bulls needed is not yet fully determined. When bulls test infertile during a breeding soundness exam prior to the breeding season or are injured during the breeding season, replacement bulls that match the existing bull battery must be obtained as soon as possible. In determining where to buy bulls, a cow/calf producer should look for seedstock producers with good reputations, the breed needed, quality genetics and the documentation necessary to validate genetic quality such as actual performance and expected progeny differences (EPDs). The bull’s quality and cost are commonly linked;

GPL Spring 2022

S VALUE a bull that can sire heavier calves should be worth more. The best way to determine a bull’s value is potential revenues returned to the operation in the form of calf weight. Once analyzing the numbers, visually inspect the bulls and rank according to priority. Then decide how much the bulls are worth. Three bull investment scenarios are provided. In Tables 1 and 2: Bull 1 is a typical bull purchased out of a sale barn to just get the cows pregnant; Bull 2 is purchased from a neighbor or friend and could be of known parentage with individual animal performance available; Bull 3 is purchased from a reputable breeder with known genetics, and individual performance information and EPDs are available. Table 1 shows the total annual economic bull costs per cow for each bull, assuming each performs for five years. From the analysis, the difference between Bull 1 and Bull 2 is $12.69 per cow, which for a 550-pound calf is $2.30 per hundred weight. There is a $31.09 per cow difference between Bull 1 and Bull 3, which on a 550-pound calf is $5.65 per hundred weight. Table 2 shows examples of how these investments could affect an operation. Tables 1 and 2 demonstrate the performance differences in subsequent calf crops and potential incomes related to purchasing bulls based on EPDs and pedigrees. It usually pays to purchase good genetics. While every operation might not receive an increase in performance as projected above, there are operations that have seen greater increases. With a high value of gain, relatively small differences in marginal cost relate to significant differences in marginal return. When considering performance differences, bulls that increase calf growth performance are worth a lot more than average bulls and typically do not cost as much as they are worth. - WHAT CARING FOR EMPLOYEES LOOKS LIKE by Vicki May, Human Resources Director

Help wanted signs are in store-front windows

up and down Main Street, America. Whether we blame COVID, reduced manufacturing, stressed supply chains, the ‘Great Resignation Movement’ of 2021, or however we rationalize this employment shortage we try to explain why it's hard to find workers—companies everywhere are feeling a hiring strain. Not unlike other companies and businesses, the Agricultural and Construction Equipment industry has also experienced the downturn of fewer and less qualified applicants to apply for open positions. While this certainly is a more challenging hiring environment, it is also an opportunity for companies to turn their sights to their existing workforce, and reevaluate what it looks like to care for employees. Employee retention considerations have the ear of CEOs, CFOs and business leadership teams of both small and large organizations everywhere. A renewed sense of employee retention and how companies value and care for their employees has become more of a ‘crucial conversation’. Great Plains Kubota didn’t wait for this recruiting phenomenon to occur to focus on how we care for our employees. Our employees are a work-family, and they are at the very heart of the Great Plains Mission Statement: The mission of Great Plains is: ‘To provide quality equipment solutions while conducting business in a manner that honors and respects God, our employees, our customers, our suppliers, and the communities we serve.’ Prospective employees regularly share that they are looking for new career opportunities because they have been ‘let down’ by the lack of value they have felt from employers who espoused to value their employees. From a recruiting standpoint, this can be a challenging conversation to overcome for job-

seekers. Telling a prospective employee that we value and respect our employees is ‘the same line they heard from the last guy’, but demonstrating how we care for our employees makes the difference in the interview conversation, and in how we retain great talent. The best organizations know and understand the human component, and that employees are not cogs on a wheel whose only value is mechanical and routine production. Sociologists and historians like Studs Terkel, the Hawthorne studies, and others have written in depth on the subject of work and what allows employees to perform well, and also what causes us to find satisfaction and value in our work. If a 1927 experiment showed that improving the lighting in a factory not only increased productivity and made workers feel cared for, then how much more can companies do today to attract and retain great talent by owning a culture where their employees feel cared for. Retaining great talent requires a package deal– competitive pay and benefits are a given, but today’s employees are not so different from those early factory workers who felt like they mattered when the lights got brighter. Today’s employees want to work hard and to feel like they know their job duties and that they are meeting the expectations of their supervisors. They want to feel valued, respected, and recognized. Great Plains takes this understanding to heart in a number of ways. While there are numerous ways companies can care for their employees, I will share a few ways that Great Plains shows employee care. Mission Mindedness The Employee Hardship Fund is voluntarily funded by our employees, with employees donating on the average between one to two dollars per pay period to a special Hardship fund that is matched dollar for dollar by our owners. This fund is used to assist in financial issues that come-up tragically or unexpectedly in

the lives of our employees—it is a ‘hand-up’, and it is a gift; family taking care of family. Our owners are Faith-driven business leaders–and their vision for the group is that we also care for one another. Also as a result of this Mission-mindedness focus, Great Plains created a website for employees to make prayer requests. We also use E-mail to communicate a need or prayer request of our entire group. Additionally, we celebrate great accomplishments, births, etc. as a group. Compassionate Shepherding Caring for employees begins with an understanding that employees walk through the doors at the workplace as people who are Husbands, Wives, Moms and Dads, Grandparents, Daughters, Sons, Brothers, Sisters, etc., who come to work with personal joys and challenges outside of the workspace—the everyday real-life ‘stuff ’ that doesn’t go away between the hours of 8 AM to 5 PM; bills, sickness, family issues, etc. The antiquated rhetoric of ‘leave your personal lives at the front door’ is a tall order. While it is true that work must occur, it is also true that employees often just need someone to know their situation, and that they are working through a tough time. Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Great Plains recognizes that happy employees create positive and productive work environments that allow everyone to thrive while working toward common goals. Unfortunately, there are times when personal problems prevent employees from doing their best work. This may lead to a reduction in productivity and focus, which can negatively impact the rest of the team. Great Plains pays for the full cost of a professional Employee Assistance Program, with no out of pocket cost to our employees. Guidance resources include counseling or advisement in areas of Intellectual, Financial, Occupational, Social, Environmental, Spiritual, Emotional, or Physical dimensions of Wellness. Benefits Benefit packages offer today’s prospective employee with an array of offerings that send the message that companies do indeed care for their employees. Great Plains is also proud to offer an array of Employee Benefits Group sponsored health insurance where our owners pay an average of $3,300.00 per participating employee, per year to lower the plan costs to employees. Additionally, we offer Group rates on Dental and Vision insurances, an Employer paid Life Insurance policy for each employee, along with Employer-paid Short Term Disability (STD), Voluntary Group Life Insurance and Voluntary Long Term Disability (LTD). Employees in our shops, and in our Rental business also receive an annual reimbursement for a new pair of boots. Semi Annual Employee Evaluations Employee Reviews are vital to employees understanding how their production contributes to the success of the company. The Employee Evaluation allows the employee and the supervisor to review previous goals and to set new goal expectations, and to update the employee’s training path. Moreover, the evaluation is a time for the employee to receive feedback, and is also the opportunity for the employee to feel that she/he is heard as well. Finally, whether a company is evaluating their culture and programs for hiring, or for retention–programs that speak to a Mission-mindedness, Compassion Shepherding, Employee Assistance programs, Employee Benefits, and Employee Evaluations are programs that demonstrate how a company’s culture views employees. In today’s employee-economy, a company that can demonstrate what caring for employees looks like, will have enough cultural capital to thrive. GPL Spring 2022

There are many wind break fencing options available. Plastic mesh fencing is a relatively low-cost option to purchase and install. If deer and other wildlife present a problem take this into consideration when installing fencing. A dual-purpose fence can address both wind and wildlife issues. Ideally, all perennial weeds should be removed from the garden site prior to planting. The biggest offender on most new sites in Oklahoma is bermudagrass. The quickest, most cost-effective method for controlling bermudagrass is herbicide (glyphosate) application during the growing season. The only chemical control options for the coming spring consist of (1) a glyphosate application made to the grass once growth is initiated which means getting a late start on planting your garden or (2) a selective grass herbicide application such as Poast or Select made to an established garden. If you are opposed to using herbicides to control bermudagrass consider installing heavy weight weed barrier fabric over the garden site and confine production to containers for a minimum of one growing season. There is no need to disturb the Bermuda sod prior to installing the weed barrier. Allowing the weed barrier to remain in place for one growing season will effectively control bermudagrass. The weed barrier can be removed following the first killing freeze or in October

24

to accommodate planting a fall cover crop. If you chose the container option you will need to account for the additional cost of purchasing potting soil as containers will not drain properly when filled with top (field) soil. For more information on container gardening go to container-gardening-hla-6458.pdf (okstate.edu). For a list of container and raised bed options including a few novel designs incorporating the use of scrap tires, go to Backyard Demonstration Gardens — Oklahoma Gardening (okstate.edu). Irrigation - High level gardening in Oklahoma is impossible without irrigation. Determining the amount of water available for irrigation and the quality of the water is an important component of garden planning. Most residential water meters are capable of supplying a sufficient volume of water to meet the requirement of backyard size gardens. In residential neighborhoods, water pressure is seldom an issue especially when using drip irrigation. Generally speaking, if the water is suitable for drinking it is suitable for irrigation. The possible exception is pH. Some municipal water supplies are very alkaline in reaction (high pH) and could present a problem when used to irrigate a container garden. If you suspect a problem submit a water sample to your local county OSU Extension Office for testing.

GPL Spring 2022

A few additional irrigation related things to keep in mind during the planning process. All municipal water sources, city and rural, are subject to rationing during drought. During severe drought outdoor watering may be limited to only once or twice a week. Do you have access to another water source? Also, consider the cost of water if you plan on using a municipal source to irrigate a large home garden or market garden. During the summer months a producing garden requires a minimum of one acre inch per week which is equivalent to 27,000 gallons per irrigated acre. Municipal water rates range from $4.00-$10.00 per 1000 gallons. Using an average rate of $7.00/1000 gallons expect a $189.00 weekly water bill for each acre irrigated. If you live in an area with an abundant source of good quality ground water a water well is your best option for sourcing water for irrigation. In some areas, sufficient quantities of water are located too deep to be economical. As a rule of thumb, a well needs to yield a minimum of five gallons per minute per acre (5 gpm/ acre). Ground water can vary greatly in quality so be sure and submit a sample for testing. In rural areas surface water sources are often used for irrigation. If you are considering using a pond as a water source, keep in mind that you will need to compensate for the water lost from the pond due to

evaporation. If you plan on irrigating from a stream, you will first need to obtain a water use permit from the Oklahoma Water Resources Board, http://www. owrb.ok.gov. Surface water will need to be filtered to remove biological matter before use in both sprinkler and drip irrigation systems. For more information on planning and installing a drip irrigation system go to drip-irrigation-systemsbae-1511.pdf (okstate.edu). Soil testing and preparation - Winter is a great time to collect a soil sample and submit to your local county OSU Extension Office for testing. Soil testing is the only accurate method for determining the plant available nutrient status of your garden soil. A core or slice of soil from the surface to a depth of six inches should be taken at random from 15-20 locations around the garden and combined into one composite sample. The soil testing lab will send the results back to you with fertilizer recommendations. If you are container gardening and using a soilless growing medium (potting soil), sample the containers separately. For additional information on soil sampling go to soil-testing-the-right-first-step-l-249.pdf (okstate.edu). Several weeks prior to planting, shred the cover crop and incorporate into the soil. Great Plains living is always looking for new and exciting recipes to share with our customers and readers.

And when it comes to beef you can never have enough recipes. Recently, one of our Ada customers graciously brought a fantastic food creation for us to try. Needless to say we hope more of these smoked skirt steak rolls show up at our dealership. Skirt steak can sometimes be hard to find. However, you can typically find a few local butchers that carry the cut. Skirt Steak is a meat lover's favorite, and although it's usually thin, it's loaded with beefy flavor and juices! This long, thin cut has easily defined grain and comes from the diaphragm area just under the rib section. There's actually two different skirt steaks, and a cook should defiantly know the difference. The outside skirt tends to be less course, and will be considerably narrower than the inside skirt. Customer David Stutte loves to smoke meats, and like us he's always looking for unique techniques or recipes to try out. In this recipe Stutte has taken a classic rolling technique, added the element of smoke and has shared them with us. So, now we are sharing his smoked skirt steak rolls with you. What makes this meaty main course different than other dishes? For starters, the skirt steak itself isn't your normal cut, and thus provides a more unique beef flavor. Additionally, the cooking method adds variety to this meal. A skirt steak isn't the stereotypical meat found at your local BBQ joint. Lastly, the presentation offers eaters not only a pleasing plate, but delicious smoky beef layers, adding both texture and aesthetics to this dish.

DIRECTIONS

By Customer David Stutte

1. Season the skirt steak with fresh sea salt and cracked black pepper (or to your taste.) 2. The width of skirt steaks vary so cutting the steak into equal parts will make for equal sized rolls. Cutting the steak into 2-inch strips should make about a perfect 3-inch roll.

3. Starting on one end, tightly roll your steak strip towards itself. After you've created about a 3-inch roll, tie the roll off with butchers twine. Then, arrange in round pan and let them rest in the fridge over night.

4. Set up your smoker for a 225 degree smoke. Smoke with your favorite smoking wood. 5. Smoke the skirt steak rolls for 2 hours at 225 degrees. Then, wrap in foil and rest in the over at 225 degrees for another hour.

6. Serve and enjoy these meaty bites any time of year! GPL Spring 2022

KUBOTA TRACTOR CORPORATION: A Golden Anniversary In 2004, Kubota introduced their RTV900 utility Kubota Tractor Corporation is celebrating 50 years •vehicle to the US market. They expected to sell 5,000 in the US. Since arriving in 1972, Kubota Tractor Corporation has expanded its innovative product lines throughout US markets. Kubota now offers extensive lines of lawn mowers, utility vehicles, construction, agriculture, and hay equipment. The first Kubota tractor available in the United States was the 21 horsepower, L200. This sub-compact tractor filled a product void in the US and quickly became a success. Kubota's evolution from that first L200 to the wide range of durable equipment we know today demands appreciation. In honor of their 50th anniversary, here is a quick look at Kubota Tractor Corporation over the years. • Kubota began with the aim of helping solve the world’s problems in food, water, and the environment. To this day, this remains Kubota’s vision. • Kubota’s research and development headquarters opened in 1984. They have focused on innovating and improving their products to better meet customer needs ever since. With their research and development, Kubota has maintained their focus of being a technology oriented company. • To better tailor products for the US, Kubota began manufacturing in Georgia, establishing Kubota Manufacturing of America in 1989. • In 1993, Kubota became the first in the world to meet the CARB ULG exhaust emission regulations of the US. Even before this, Kubota worked towards designing and manufacturing clean diesel engines, and they continue to do so today.

vehicles in the first year, but ended selling three times that amount. This utility vehicle became so popular because of Kubota’s innovation to convert technologies from its tractors to a strong and easily controllable side by side. • Kubota reached total tractor production of 3 million units in 2005. • Kubota Tractor Corporation relocated its headquarters from Torrance, California to Grapevine, Texas in 2017. This move was important for Kubota because they now are closely located to their major markets, manufacturing, assembly, and distribution facilities. They are now more apt to quickly respond to changes in the market and industry, thus streamlining operations and benefiting customers. In a sense, Great Plains Kubota has grown right alongside Kubota. Quickly approaching our 20th anniversary as a Kubota dealership, we began serving customers in Duncan, Shawnee, and Ada. Flashforward 20 years, and we are nearing the opening of our tenth Great Plains location in Okla. For the last 50 years Kubota Tractor Corporation has strived to innovate and create reliable and hard-working equipment to meet consumer needs. We at Great Plains have spent the last 20 years searching to find new and better ways to serve the equipment needs in communities across Oklahoma.
