Great plains kubota was honored by a recent visit from Mary Vermeer andringa and mindi Vermeer vandenbosch, daughter and granddaughter of Gary Vermeer, founder of Vermeer. the gp family is very proud to be able to represent Vermeer because like GP they are a family business that’s not ashamed to profess their Christian beliefs. Vermeer has been a great pattern for our own family business to follow and has been instrumental in working with Garrett Clark's transformation of the GP service departments. the GP partnership with Vermeer is like the Vermeer equipment itself: built to last.

Editorial Spring Fishing

seems like the editorial page of Great Plains living has become my personal outdoor column, but with so I tmany outdoor activities in Oklahoma, why not? With the decline of print media, outdoor columns are hard

to find. Sure there are plenty to be found online, but from a local standpoint there isn’t really anyone representing outdoor sports. I’m by no means an expert when it comes to hunting or fishing, but I do enjoy it and enjoy writing about the subject which brings me to this issue's topic of spring fishing. Past issues of Great Plains living have featured fishing, but this editorial particularly will focus on three points; catch-and-release, sport or leisure, and finally the troll. Catch-And-Release - I’m a firm believer in catch and release, into a pan of hot grease that is. I love the taste of fish. Each fish has it’s own unique flavor thus making them all fair game in my book. In fact, this winter after snagging a boat load of needle nose gar, I decided to undergo the cleaning process to make gar balls. One and done when it comes to these things folks. Yuck, the Cajuns can have all the gar balls they want. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife has set the daily limits and sizes, so when adhered to this, I don’t see any problem with keeping what you catch. Sport Or Leisure - The idea of turning a pastime into an action-packed sport is foreign to me. I have no personal stance or issue with pro-fisherman or even tournament fishing, but for me, fishing has always been a personal enjoyment. It seems to me the minute something can be sold and sponsored, the fun goes right out the window, but what would I know? I fish for food not money. The Troll - Trolling is a great method to catch fish, especially during early spring, and from a fishing standpoint, it has numerous benefits. This being said, conditions for trolling have to be right for it to work. For example lakes with lots of debris and structure aren’t the best bodies of water to troll. When there are a lot of people in the boat trolling fits the bill. It’s an easy way everyone can enjoy the boat while catching fish safely. Throwing plug non-stop is a good way to get a treble hook in your ear when the boat is overloaded. Trolling is also good when windy conditions make the boat a pain to manipulate. Another good use for trolling is for kids. Taking youngsters fishing is important but often times they can grow bored if the fishing is slow. Trolling is a good solution to this. It’s also a great way to get to know your lake. By covering areas over and over again you get to understand the underwater structures and topography. I’ll be honest. This has become my favorite method for catching lake fish. My time fishing is limited, and I’m usually tired so what better way is there to enjoy an afternoon on a lake than putting around catching fish. Finally, one of the neatest benefits of trolling is that you can catch a variety of fish without changing your lure. In fact there is one particular lake in which my dad and I have literally caught almost every species of fish present while trolling. We caught and ate them all, from carp and crappie to Flathead and Largemouths, but it wasn’t until this spring that we landed a hybrid in the boat. Reed Boettcher - Editor

History of the V-Bar and their paintings, the springs and their water, the rocks and Thetheircaves snakes, all these things may come to mind to those who know

V HISTORY By Reed Boettcher

about the ranch nestled in the rock just south of Fittstown. The history of the V-Bar starts long before James (Jim) Vincent began acquiring the land which is now known as the V-Bar. The human footprint was probably there even before the cave artist left his mark on one of the many caves that dot it's landscape. More than likely both ancient people and animals have been drawn to the abundant amount of fresh water given by the land. Like so many other Oklahoma ranches, it's history creates different memories and holds different meanings to different people. To Judy Fisher the V-Bar has always been home, to area locals it has been a swimming hole, to geologists it's been a place of study. But one thing the ranch has in common with all who have been lucky enough to visit is that it surely holds a special place in their memories. Jim Vincent was working cattle on the Buxton Ranch (a well known part of Hereford Heaven), with the Davis brothers about the time he met Estelle Borden. Estelle or Stell as Jim would call her, had a 12th grade education from a native American boarding school and could speak fluent Chickasaw. She was to become the head mistress at a one room school house in Bebe. That was until Jim proposed. It was perhaps this marriage and the fact that Estella spoke Chickasaw and that Jim was a quick learner that led to the accumulation of land that would become the V-Bar. In some ways one could say that it was the Chickasaw language itself that helped form the ranch. In the early 1900s Jim was a cattle brand inspector and since by this time he spoke Chickasaw the government somewhat assigned him double duty as an acting liaison with the local native Americans in regards to their land restrictions and the lifting thereof. Once the allotted lands restrictions began to lift the V-Bar started to form. In total, a little over three thousand acres would make up the ranch and as the property grew so did the Vincent family. Frank Gale Vincent was the second generation to live on the ranch. As he grew older, he became the main cowboy of the ranch. Franks first daughter, and the only grandchild living on the ranch for some time was Judy Gale Vincent, now Judy Fisher and sole owner of the V-Bar. Judy still lives at the V-Bar. With the help of family such as her son Robbie and grandson Rance Kowey the property is still used for cattle. Judy who's 1/16th Chickasaw is proud of her heritage and her homestead. The V-Bar, once a part of Hereford Heaven, is now about half its original size, but is still used for cattle operation. According to Judy, the now 1600 acre ranch with fewer cattle, is the perfect amount to manage. The story of the V-Bar can be told by many people in many ways but Judy tells it best. "Growing up on the V-Bar was great. Mornings would start before sun up, saddling horses in the dark for the long trip to east Jesse where we ran cattle on leased land, but I always loved riding horses. I grew up on the back of a horse. When I was just a baby my grandad would stuff a pillow over the saddle horn and pack an extra diaper and off we'd go to check fences Pictured Above: Frank & Katharine or cows. To work cows on the V-Bar you had to know the landmarks, and at Vincent at the Statue of Liberty and at home it's peak there could be up to 25 cowboys working the ranch which my mom years later in front of the rock house at the and I would cook for etc. So you had to know the locations to effectively V-Bar. work the ranch with my family. Knob, Poker Rock, the Big Rocks and much more. My dad who had a good highway patrol friend would use discarded road signs as markers in later years. Growing up we had two houses-the White house, and the Rock house. The rock house, which is still in use today, had all the rock work done by a German man by the name of Mr. Coch. I can still remember helping him do some of the rock work. He had a little trowel just for me. I couldn't have been more than three years old but I can still remember helping him. My dad was a rock hound and while looking for rocks for that house he found what was the cornerstone to the "Wapanuka Institute," said Judy. Like most ranches back then the V-Bar was completely self sufficient. They had a garden, did a lot of canning, ran goats from time to time, and kept a few pigs. In a lot of ways it's history as a working cattle ranch in Oklahoma resembles a lot of other historic cattle ranches. It's the natural landscape and what lies beneath that truly makes the V-Bar different. One can't write about the V-Bar without mentioning it's at least three natural occurrences. One being the impressive amount of water. Of course there is

8

"Deadman Springs," which, of all the springs is the most well known. A rock terrace built by the same German craftsman that built the rock house made the dam around the pool, and in typical Vincent branding fashion there is a rock shaped V in the center of the structure. Deadman Springs has been a gathering spot for locals and cowboys alike. It's location at the head of the canyon is like something from a western movie, but this could be said for most of the topography on the ranch. Two prominent creeks flow

on the property, Coal Creek and Canyon Creek. Other springs seem to pop up all over the land though. In fact Judy just recently located a new spring that she

V had never noticed before. Another natural notation is the rock formations. The ground is rich with rock and minerals which probably goes hand in hand with the water present. Shear cliffs, caves, hill sides, out croppings are the perfect hiding place for many a historic tale. The cave paintings alone make the ranch a notable historic site, but the tales of poker rock are just as intriguing. Poker rock is an overhang where during rainy weather cowboys and their horses could weather a storm with a friendly or not so friendly game of poker. The landscape is also perfect for off-roading. In fact, the remains of a Willys Jeep trail made by Frank Vincent are still present on the ranch and in some capacities are still used by family members. One of Judy's grandsons, Russell Bunyard loves to off-road at the ranch. He keeps the trails alive by 4-wheeling with his Jeeps, but, admittedly his favorite way to get around on the ranch is with a Polaris RZR. Pictured above Russell looks out over the V-Bar after making a

treacherous climb to the top of High Knob, the highest point on the ranch. "The ranch is more than a place to go visit family and off-road. It's a place that can take a bad day and make it good. To me it really cleanses my soul every time I go out there, which isn't often enough. I'm blessed to have family land that is such a neat part of Oklahoma history. The memories I have at the ranch are too numerous to mention. Lots of holidays, lots of time spent in the wilderness, lots of firsts lets say. It's fun to just get lost for a while out there. It's a great escape from the hustle and bustle of life in town," Bunyard said. Rattlesnakes on the V-Bar are as prevalent as the fresh water. Snake hunters have made pilgrimage to

the V-Bar over the decades, and Frank Vincent was a notable rattlesnake wrangler. Judy recalled numerous trips to "round-ups" when she was younger. One such "round-up" her father became a member of the White Fang Club, and for those unfamiliar with this club, members are usually inducted by accident. Judy explained further that on one trip to the Waurika rattlesnake round up, one of the female rattlesnakes her dad had caught decided to have babies. One of which bit Frank's hand while he was putting it in a cigar box for Judy. When the coal oil remedy that he treated lots of injuries with failed to work, he had to make a visit to the doctor, and thus he became a member of the white fang club. On the plus side, Judy won the "smallest snake" prize that year at the Waurika snake round up. The largest snake ever caught at the ranch was over eight feet long and used to adorn Judy's living room at the ranch house. Holding true to tradition his great grandson Rance Kowey, still hunts snakes in the same dens as his great grandfather. The V-Bar is more than a brand, and more than just another Oklahoma ranch. It's both family history and natural history. For Jim Vincent, a local brand inspector, it was to be his legacy and a symbol of his love for the land and a good brand.

Background Images: The V-Bar brand is forever embedded into the structure around "Deadman" springs and is a reminder of Jim Vincent's love of rocks and brands, especially his own. The V-Bar sign complete with a rattlesnake has been pointing the way to the ranch on Hwy 9 for a long time. At left, Russell Bunyard, grandson of Judy Fisher gives the full tour of "The Big Rocks". Haines is no stranger to equipment rentJ ohn als, or to the Sulphur/Davis area. Haines, from

Sulphur, knows the area and the local residents well. Likewise he knows equipment. Formerly from Ditch Witch, Haines once played an integral part in helping what was then, Great Plains Rent-All, start up their Ardmore location. Now, as Store Manager to the new rental location in Davis, Haines’s knowledge of equipment and attention to superior customer service will surely make this new store a success. Eric Richardson, another local veteran to the industry, brings years of experience from working at United Rentals to GP Rents Davis. Finally, Heath Cosby of GP Rents Ada who transferred to GP Rents Davis to help meet the demands of the stores growing rental business, completes the rental team. Located at County Road 90 directly north of highway 7 as one would drive into Davis from Sulphur is the newest addition to the Great Plains LLC family. Since opening earlier this spring, GP Rents Davis has continued to grow

it's inventory options to meet the needs of both homeowners and contractors. Haines explained why they decided to have a “soft” opening as opposed to a “Grand Opening:” "We thought it would be best to have a grand opening after we worked out all the bugs. Our inventory is growing practically everyday, and we really felt that for a true grand opening to be "Grand" we wanted to have everything in place. These last few weeks have been extremely busy, and not just setting up the store. We've been consistently serving customers for well over a month now. We do have a date set so mark you calendars for Friday, June 15th from 11-3. We are going to have plenty of food, lots of great prizes, a few givea-ways and lots more fun stuff. We are going to have the Chambers from both Davis and Sulphur out, and KKAJ will be broadcasting a remote. It's going to be a great time to find out what GP Rents is all about," said Haines.

company. However, unlike the rental departments that operate out of the Kubota dealerships of Great Plains Kubota, GP Rents Davis stands alone. In addition, the Davis store offers much more variety to its customers. Of course customers can still rent dependable Kubota equipment, but now customers can rent small lawn and garden tools such as; sprayers, overseeders, saws, aerators, sod cutters, etc. Rental Manager Eric Richardson mentioned other rental items like concrete tools, and a variety of general tools which will be a great addition to the rental line-up. "Customer's can expect our equipment to be clean and ready to work! This is the GP Rents promise to customers at any of our rental locations. Our commitment to offer customers well maintained equipment is backed by years of combined customer service," Richardson explained. GP Rents offers equipment to help get the job done smarter, not harder. This was the former slogan of Great Plains Rent-All and it still is true. Summer Coats For Calves By Bill Clark

One is reading and the other is association and carcass genetwith smarter people.” Reading and listening to people, ics have made our most of whom are much smarter than me, talk about cows too big and raising cattle is something is something I really enjoy hard to keep. This because I am passionate about the cattle business and time I want to talk I want to be continually improving. But, I think Will about the timing of Rogers missed another way that we learn and that’s calving, and how through observation. The Apostle Paul said in Romans that can affect the 1:20, “For the invisible things of him from the creation efficiency of our of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the cow/calf operations. things that are made, even his eternal power and GodIt is easy for us head; so that they are without excuse.” When it come to observe that to understanding the Bible, I really enjoy reading Dr. God’s plan, has J. Vernon McGee’s commentaries. Dr. McGee’s comruminants having their offspring during the period of ments on Romans 1:20 basically says that if you can’t peak forage production, late spring. Here in Oklahosee God through observing His creation, then you are ma, we don’t see Whitetails having their fawns in Janua fool and just plain stupid. I can’t help but smile each ary or February. The vast herds of Buffalo that once time I hear Dr. McGee say just what he thinks, much roamed Oklahoma didn’t calve in the winter either. like our current President! There are many aspects of But, in order to wean a bigger calf in the fall, many of raising cattle that are “clearly seen” if we would just us have gotten into the habit of calving in the winter, take the time to observe God’s plan for nature. I admit which can be severe, even here in Oklahoma. I rethat I have been a fool many times by ignoring what member one particular ice storm in February when we is obvious and going along with “the way we’ve always had newborn calves actually freeze to the ground on done it”. our ranch in Pontotoc County. I bet that if our friends As we talk about efficiency of our cow/calf operafrom PETA had driven by our pasture on that nasty tions, one of the things that I have become convinced day, they would have accused me of being cruel to my of is, that the closer we can mimic the system that God cattle by forcing them to calve out of season. Cruel or put into place, the more efficient we will become. In not, common sense and experience tells us that calves other words, trying to work against the plan God has born during wet, cold conditions are much more likely put in place for nature is as McGee said, just stupid. to become sick as opposed to those born during milder Kit Pharo, a Colorado rancher who sells over 1000 weather. bulls annually through a very unique program, says There are other reasons to calve latter. that “God made a perfect world”. One if his favorite quotes is “It’s not nice to talked a great deal about the timing of calving. He fool mother nature, but it’s also not profitable”. stated, “there are two forms of growth: cell multiplicaIn the previous article, I expressed my ideas on one tion and cell enlargement. formation keeps going after birth, but some have suggested that it stops in as few as 13 days. Keep in mind that the little 13-dayold calf on the ground pretty well has all the cells it will ever have. This is a critical period of growth. You do NOT want the calf to experience any kind of starvation or stress at this time. If it does, cell formation will be limited and specialized cells such as nerve and muscle cells will not fully develop.” Naturally, calving in the winter could place a great deal of stress on newborns and could affect the calf ’s performance for the rest of it’s life. Ever had a relatively small calf at weaning out of one of your better cows and wonder why? This might just be the reason. So, there’s a couple of good reasons to calve later for the calf, but what about the cow? Getting a cow bred back on time might be the number one factor that determines the profitability of our operations. We know that having our cows in a good body condition score of 6 and on an increasing plane of nutrition at calving, has a lot to do with how quickly the cow will begin cycling again. I’ve read that a cow can improve one body condition score in three weeks of lush grass and I’ve observed that thin but healthy cows can gain a lot of weight very quickly when the conditions are right. If we calve late enough that the cow has had 45-60 days of fresh grass, then we could easily move a body condition score of 4 coming out of the winter to a 6 by late May or June. Lastly, length of day, or photoperiod has much to do with when a cow can return to estrus. Without getting too detailed, it has been proven that it takes a cow over twice as long to return to estrus if she calves in January than it does in July. Nature uses length of day and nutrition to control when the native animals have their offspring. So, when should we be calving here in Oklahoma? Based upon God’s plan, May. This would be 60 to 90 days later than most cattle are born in Oklahoma.

22

This is probably where many of you are probably saying that this would never work on your ranch or maybe even, that’s a stupid idea. Calving in late winter here in Okla. has literally been handed down from generation to generation, and just the discussion of calving in May around the Sunday dinner table could start a family argument. In fact, much of what we do on our cattle operations is tradition and even though I don’t rope and drag my calves to the branding fire or eat out of a chuckwagon, I admire those who do. I’m not here to convince you to change anything in your operation, but I would like for you to consider that there might be a more efficient way to run your operation. I am convinced, through reading, observing and listening to others, that God’s plan is always the best and trying to improve on the timing He has put in place is probably costing us all money and may be just plain stupid. I haven’t had the courage to move our calving to May, but we do start calving the cows in April now. Kit Pharo also said “We calved in April for several years. I didn’t realize how far out of sync with nature we were until we moved to May calving.” We’ve come a long way on our ranch moving our calving from February to April, but maybe not far enough. I recently read of a university study that concluded that calves will have the same hair coat whether they are born in the summer or winter. Genetics was the only factor that influenced the hair coat of a new born calf. So, thinking back to some of those cold winter nights when I’ve watched heifers calving, my observation is that all calves are born with summer coats. When you think about it, if God had intended for calves to be born in the winter, he would have given them winter coats.

Manager, Clark saw an opportunity to enhance the customer experience at his dealerships. So, as the new Service Manager overseeing all aspects of service in Ada, Duncan, Edmond and Shawnee, Clark has successfully increased service productivy and satisfaction. And ever since he swapped his sales cap for his Cowboy hat he’s narrowed his focus on a greater capacity for service. Clark elaborated further about the direction of GP’s service. “With the growth of our dealerships and the amount of Kubota equipment active in our markets we felt it was our duty as a dealer to refocus our efforts to increase the capacity of our service departments. Great Plains Kubota has invested in dealer training, equipment, and experienced technicians to ensure the best possible experience for now and the future.” Now, with 2018’s spring green-up in full swing customers can take advantage of GP’s continued dedication to their overall service experience. Service options such as field service work, pick up and delivery, seasonal specials and savings will add to the customer’s experience. Kubota, Vermeer, Great Plains Manufacturing, Land Pride, Woods, Hustler Turf, Krone, Echo, and Stihl equipment are just some of the manufactures Great Plains Kubota is certified to service. GP’s service departments perform Kubota warranty and insurance work on Kubota equipment, and because their service staff works closely with providers customers achieve maximum coverage. The qualified service techs and diesel mechanics are factory trained to handle any possible service ranging from basic tuneupsandoilchangestocompleteoverhauls. “We have technicians specifically trained to service the variety of equipment, attachments, and tools we sale at our dealerships. As a rancher I know how important equipment is to your bottom line, which is why you can count on me to get your service done, quickly, effectively and affordable, Clark explained.” “I’m not saying we are perfect and don’t make mistakes, because we are only human. SUMMERTIME TECH TIPS

Tips On Regeneration

it comes to the process of performing a W hen regeneration cycle on Tier 4 equipment it can

seem complicated, but it’s really not. While in the auto "regen" mode, simply bring your RPMs up when the regeneration indicator starts flashing and do so until it goes off. If you keep the RPMs up until the indicator goes off you can keep on working. In the auto mode if you bypass this eventually you will be forced to do a parked regen. In an effort to make things simple or more complicated, depending on how you look at it, the service techs of Great Plains Kubota have provided 10 tech tips on "regen". 1. Auto "regen" - If you are going to work through the exhaust period make sure to put your equipment on auto "regen". 2. Do It Now Not Later - Like most aspects of preventative maintenance it saves time and money to address what your equipment is telling you. So, when its time to "regen", "regen". 3. Read About It - When you buy a machine that requires this process make sure to read the section over regeneration in your owners manual. All process are a little different so make sure you are in the know. 4. Reach The RPMs - Our techs recommend that

Jamie Anderson

GPL spring 2018

you reach at least 2000 RPMs for the varied "regen" times and procedures. 5. Keep It Clean - The conditions of the air and fuel filters have an affect on the soot load which ultimately we want to decrease this load therefore decrease amounts of regenerating. 6. Warm Up - Never start a common rail engine and go strait to work. Give your heavy equipment time to warm up thus allowing all sensors to get up to speed etc. 7. Questions - If you have any questions with regenerating give the service departments of Great Plains Kubota a call. 8. Don’t Ignore It - If you ignore the "regen" process by pressing the bypass button you’ll get three strikes then your out. Bypassing the "regen" process more than three times will require a field trip to our shop. 9. Don’t Drive It - If there is a problem with your emissions due to "regen" errors don’t continue to drive it. This can compound a simple sensor malfunction drastically. 10. Quality Fluid - Use quality DEF fluid and store it in the conditions stated by the label.

This isn’t to say that any negative review or rating is warranted, however there are always two sides to every story. Unfortunately the review platforms online aren’t designed to equally demonstrate this. At Great Plains Kubota we’ve decided to take a step back from the digital world by literally connecting with our business owner customers to generate feedback. After all, what better way is there to build lasting customer relations while providing the public with company insight, than getting testimony from other business owners? We’ve launched an all out campaign we dubbed “GP Works For Me,” in which customers can basically state why they chose to do business with us. These testimonials are from business owners, not because they are more valued as a customer but because as business owners testimonials can have an affect on them as well. Here are just a few we’ve generated since launching this effort. “I own a couple of Kubota tractors and a Kubota excavator, and I’m more than happy with their performance and the service my dealership provides, and that’s why GP Works For Me.” - Gary Bala of Bala Construction in Ada Oklahoma “Great Plains Kubota has dependable equipment and that’s what I need to stay on top!
