It’s been two years since the world famous cowboys Cord and Jet McCoy began promoting Great Plains Kubota. The changes during this time for both parties are numerous, but the McCoys and GP are still riding with the brand. Riding with the brand is more than a slogan for GP, it’s how they do business. It embodies the ideals of loyalty and pride that GP has for their products and customers. This loyalty is reflected in the recent growth of GP. With the opening of Great Plains Edmond, the McCoy brothers will continue to represent GP in a positive and accurate way. Pictured are the McCoys at Great Plains Edmond during a commercial shoot to promote the new dealership’s grand opening that took place in May. The partnership between GP and the McCoys is a genuine one. The Kubota tractors used on the McCoy ranches are an important part of their operations. Cord and Jet’s knowledge of Kubota products along with their honest and hardworking values mirrors that of GP’s, and is why they are still riding with the brand.

Great Plains living turns two
eviewing the covers of the past eight issues reassures me that Great Plains living is going in the right direction. It’s been two years since Great Plains Kubota president, Bill Clark and I decided to produce a quarterly magazine. During this time the distribution of Great Plains living has grown from 5,000 to 13,000. During this time GP has also grown as a dealership, first with Great Plains Shawnee, and now with Great Plains Edmond. We thank all our wonderful customers and dedicated readers, because without you GP wouldn’t be the dealership it is today. I try to reserve my editorial space for my passion of writing about the outdoors. For example, my new goal of fishing at least once a week would make a great topic for this spring issue, but being the two year anniversary issue I feel it’s important to briefly skim the last 256 pages of Great Plains living. The Spring 2012 issue taught our first readers the importance of equipment maintenance. They were given a history lesson about Polaris, and read about what makes the Weed Wiper so effective. Like the current issue, the spring 2012 cover featured our spokesmen Cord and Jet McCoy, whose images and representation have impacted our advertising over the past two years. Readers also learned how helping others is part of what GP does in the articles Helping Hands and A Place for Hope. The Summer 2012 issue showed cattle producers an effective grazing practice, in Bale Grazing 101. The Crossbar ranch in Davis was featured, and readers learned the small town of Clarita had more to offer than an auction. Again, the importance of Christian faith was explored in From Fitzhugh to Kotzebue. The Fall 2012 issue featured two hunting articles, Great Plains Shawnee was introduced, and the importance of fostering children was covered in Bridging Year One the Gap. Be Prepared...Use Kubota was the Winter 2013 cover story about how Camp Simpson used Kubota equipment. The first customer submitted article was published, and readers found how the Oklahoma Outdoor Outreach impacts those with disabilities. The cover of Spring 2013 displayed the residential Kubota Kommander mower. Long time Kubota owner Bob Harris couldn’t say enough about his Kubota tractors, and readers learned customer service has been apart of the GP family since 1932. Storm Shelters Plus gave insight to the “plus” side of owning a Kubota excavator, and the impact Fall Creek has worldwide was covered. When Disaster Strikes the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief crews are there to help. Other Summer 2013 articles covered rattlesnake hunting, a nearly fatal tractor accident, and riding RZRs on the red river. Fall 2013 explained the impact grass has on rotational grazing in the article Fields of Dreams. A Close Connection explored how Brad Clay’s national TV Year Two show, Final Descent connects God and hunting. Readers also learned how a local riding group called the Oklahoma Mud Mafia was there to help. The Winter 2014 issue told readers about the GP sponsored TV show, the Land Doctors. Two new customers and neighbors to the far north were featured on the cover because they drove from Alberta to Ada to purchase a used Kubota. Great Plains Edmond was introduced as the newest GP dealership, and Kubota announced their new line of hay equipment. Readers learned they could rent Kubota equipment in Ada and Edmond, and the Polaris Ace was truly one of a kind. Finally, the article Compassion Without Judgement reflected God’s work through a local mission. “Thanks for reading.” Reed Boettcher -Editor/Publisher 4

cowboy’s heart
T
he cowboy’s will to survive is legendary. The diligent cowboy of the open range herded cattle and wrangled horses with a sense of determination. Their moral code of self preservation kept them alive in harsh elements that most would succumb to in our modern society. Today, the legend of the cowboy lives in the hearts of those who keep these values as a way of living. Being a cowboy is something that comes from inside us, perhaps even from birth. When Daric Roberts was born he came out the chute ready to “Cowboy Up. Before his first birthday Daric would undergo four heart surgeries. He wrangled the first two when he was only a month old. Daric rode out the third surgery at six months when doctors discovered he had coarctation of the aorta, which at the time no child had lived out of utero with this condition! During this surgery his vocal chords were damaged while his carotid artery was being repaired. He went under the knife one more time before turning a year old, and again on May 27th, 2014. Over the years Daric has been diagnosed with: tetralogy of flow, coarctation of the aorta, pulmonary stenosis, Noonan syndrome, West Nile, and viral meningitis, but like the cowboys he’s always admired he fought hard through each struggle and persevered. The anatomical abnormalities of the heart that Daric has herded over the past 19 years haven’t deterred him from his goals, and if anything they’ve inspired him to cowboy up even more. Tetralogy of flow is a congenital heart defect, while coarctation of the aorta is the aortic narrowing. Pulmonary stenosis is a dynamic or fixed obstruction of flow from the ventricle of the heart to the pulmonary artery. This condition was known by his doctors early on and eventually led to his surgery this past May. At 13 Daric began taking growth hormones to speed up the inevitable pulmonic surgery he had last month. It was about this time that doctors discovered he had Noonan syndrome. Noonan syndrome are physical features that are typically associated with the effects of congenital heart defects. During the summer of 2012 Daric contracted West Nile and viral meningitis, and although it wasn’t related to his heart defects the viruses did take a toll on the cowboy’s heart. Like most kids growing up in southern Okla. Daric was no stranger to livestock, such as cattle and horses. Around six years old Daric fell in love with the movie 8 Seconds. Most kids at this age were watching cartoons and playing G.I. Joes while Daric was roping relatives with any material that would tie a knot. Cowboys and rodeo stars like Layne Frost quickly became his inspiration to following his goal of working with horses. Daric recently graduated from Lindsey High School. For three years he showed pigs with the Garvin County Junior Livestock 4H where charitable donations from companies like Great Plains helped support his extracurricular activity. Furthering his dreams to work on a ranch with horses, Daric studied equine science at the Wayne Mid-America vo-tech. Daric’s most recent heart surgery was a huge success. He’s still in recovery, but the rate at which he’s done so has astonished everyone. Before the surgery he wasn’t worried because he knew it had to be done. In fact, he was more worried about loosing the 12 hairs that were shaved from his 6

chest during preparations than the actual procedure. Now that he’s graduated and successfully completed his fifth heart surgery the open range awaits. Daric is a fun loving young man who has a deep family bond and will hardly be caught indoors. As an outdoorsman he loves to hunt and fish. This love eventually lead him to join a non-profit organization for people with disabilities called the Oklahoma Outdoor Outreach, or Triple O. Daric has enjoyed many hunts with the Triple O, including one where he harvested a large mature buck in Michigan, but his favorite hunt is the youth turkey hunts the group hosts every spring. This great group of volunteers has connect him and his family with others, while sharing the joy of the outdoors. Daric’s mom Kalaugha Sorrels commented on their involvement. “The Triple O has touched our family. It’s allowed Daric to meet and befriend others that have struggled with health issues. This interaction has impacted both the lives of Daric and the people he’s met along the way. The Triple O is a huge confidence builder. The volunteers allow opportunities for the members to experience that would never be possible,” said Sorrels. A week before his last surgery Daric met with a couple of his cowboy favorites, Cord and Jet McCoy at a commercial shoot for the new Great Plains Edmond. Here the three enjoyed small talk, and discussed when Daric might hop on one of Cord’s bulls. Being a cowboy can mean many different things. It’s a profession, a way of life, or for some a way to dress. For Daric Roberts it starts in his heart, a heart that beats to ys spending time with family. He’s like a big brother to cousins Sunshine, Journi, many big bucks. As a member of the Oklahoma Outdoor Outreach Daric has enjoyed a rhythm of the not so distant past where honest hard hunting hat, is pictured in the middle with Chance Drawbough of the Triple O, and working men of the open range never gave up. Perhaps a e took on their spring youth hunt in western Okla. At far left Daric cracks a smile with cowboy’s heart is the key to survival and the inspiration to er Newsom after his recent heart surgery. do what’s right in life?

How To Package Your Next Kubota
K
ubota packages are popular at Great Plains Kubota, because they provide additional savings while completely meeting the needs of the customer. Kubota packages at GP are simple, here’s how:
How do I package a Kubota?
A Kubota package can be created by purchasing three or more implements with any piece of Kubota equipment. Typically Kubota packages refer to tractor packages that utilize frequently used implements like the box blade or rotary cutter. GP keeps several tractor packages assembled and in stock ranging from 30 - 50 HP. These packages typically include a trailer, box blade and rotary cutter. To clarify, a trailer is considered an implement in our packages; however, the Kubota front end loader is not. With the variety of quality implements and attachments at Great Plains Kubota the package combinations are almost endless.
What is different about GP Kubota packages?
GP offers premium, performance matched Land Pride implements as well as a variety of specialty attachments designed for specific tasks. Packages are designed to save customers money. By discounting a percentage off the three or more implements purchased in conjunction with a Kubota customers save a significant amount.
Is a Kubota package right for me?
A great benefit of purchasing a Kubota package is everything can be financed together. Packages are truly ideal for customers that are needing a finance purchase, and new or replacement implements. GP packages are perfect for first time tractor buyers, or those with small farms, hunting leases, or recreational properties. For customers who choose not to finance, discounts are still applied when three or more imple implements are purchased with Kubota equipment.
Ku•bo•ta pack•age (kooboh-ta / pak-ij) noun 1. a powerful Kubota vehicle with large, heavy treads, designed to work for farm or construction applications ect., purchased in conjunction with three or more premium implements or attachments, to create additional customer savings. See Great Plains Kubota for additional definitions. 8
There Will Always Be A Place For Rakes
“T
he role of the hay rake will never go away,” insists Mike Kindley. “We’ve seen rakes evolve into different styles with new advanced features, but there’s always going to be a place for rakes in quality forage production.” As technical service support specialist for Vermeer, Kindley has seen plenty of examples. While some producers continue to mow hay without a conditioner and use a rake to form a windrow, he says others use a rake for other cost– or quality-saving purposes. “It all depends on the climate, drying conditions, baler capacity, etc.,” he says. “However, the role of a rake these days primarily revolves around moisture control and/or baler capacity, which involves pulling two or more windrows together so a high-capacity baler can make fewer trips over the field. With proper adjustment of the raking width and windrow width, you can produce a windrow that perfectly fits the bale chamber,” he adds. While Vermeer and its competitors offer a number of different rake styles and models, Kindley notes that, in general, basket rakes, like the Vermeer R Series Rakes, and rotary rakes are best for high-volume crops like irrigated alfalfa and haylage. That is especially true of dairy quality alfalfa, since the rake baskets are powered, either by the PTO or hydraulic motors, and do not require contact with the ground or stubble. Hence, there’s less chance of getting rocks, dirt or ash in the crop and a reduced chance of broken teeth. Wheel rakes, on the other hand, are ideal for grass hay, thinner crops and corn stover. However, when properly adjusted, they can also be very gentle on legumes, since the wheels and teeth move slower than they do with other rake designs. Vermeer models range from the simple, value-priced Rebel RB20 Rake, on which the wheels float in pairs, to the VR820, VR1022 and VR1224 Carted Wheel Rakes, which allows one-pin adjustment of wheel down-pressure. Kindley is perhaps most impressed, though, with the VR1428/VR2040 High-Capacity Wheel Rakes, which he sees as being a good compromise between the two types. “For one thing, these models provide a wide range of raking widths for light crops and heavy crops alike,” GPL Spring 2014
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? WE’LL SHOW YOU!
You can run with just a 60 hp tractor and hook it up with just the drop of a pin. You can cut from any tongue angle with a unique, patented self-aligning driveline and maintain excellent ground hugging control with an exclusive nitrogen-charged hydraulic suspension system. All of your adjustments are quick and wrench-free.

he says. “However, the best feature is the hydraulic suspension and the independent flotation on each wheel. Thanks to the precise control, the operator can actually adjust the suspension pressure to the point where the wheels will leave any dirt and ash behind. BUILT TO LAST
R
ooted in the heartland of America is a remarkable story. One that transformed the small town of Pella, Iowa, and changed the world of agriculture. It’s the story of a one-man operation that evolved over six decades into one of the premier manufacturers of agricultural and environmental equipment in the world. It begins with a man who liked to walk the fields with neighboring farmers, discussing the many challenges they faced on the job. It was the 1940s and the Second World War raged on in Europe and the AsiaPacific. With hundreds of thousands of Americans engaged in battle, fighting tyranny abroad in the name of freedom and honor, farmers back home were having a tough time finding good help. Back then unloading grain was among the most labor-intensive jobs on the farm, and the shortage of dependable hired hands only made matters worse. A man named Gary Vermeer set out to find a better way to get the job done. He outfitted his grain wagon with a simple mechanical hoist that unloaded grain faster and easier. Pleased with the results, he shared his innovation with neighboring farmers. Word spread quickly and soon farmers from all over the area wanted Gary Vermeer to modify their wagons. The first Vermeer innovation was a hit. On November 22, 1948, Gary Vermeer and his cousin Ralph Vermeer, a local banker, started Vermeer Manufacturing Co. From day one the company’s philosophy mirrored what Gary Vermeer had achieved with his grain wagon hoist: find a need, fill that need with a product built to last, and simply build the best. Even as the company began to grow and expand its product line, that philosophy continued to inspire every product Vermeer built. In 1950, the company introduced portable PTOpowered hammermills. Instead of using flat belts and pulleys that would often slip in cold or wet weather to grind grain, Vermeer’s Pow-R-Drive models harnessed greatplainskubota.com
wheel, backed by a nitrogen-charged accumulator, the VR1428 and VR2040 provide far more flexibility than a basket rake in uneven terrain.” No matter the rake type, though, Kindley insists the moisture level at raking is the most important factor. That is why he also recommends the use of the center splitter attachment, which is optional on all models. By lifting and turning the center of the swath, the entire crop is mixed and the full windrow is allowed to dry evenly. the power take-off (PTO) of tractors. The product’s success helped spark growth for the young company, and later prompted Vermeer to introduce additional PTO-driven products. Sometimes the best solution to a problem presents itself unexpectedly. Such was the case with the revolutionary stump cutter Vermeer unveiled in 1957. While testing a new stump cutter prototype, a Vermeer employee inadvertently hit the wrong lever, causing the cutting wheel to move horizontally across the stump. It was a better way to get the job done, and the discovery resulted in a top-of-the-line stump cutter design that is still used today. Vermeer’s signature innovation, one that would revolutionize the hay harvesting industry forever, came in 1971. Gary Vermeer went on an early morning walk with a close friend who shared with him some disheartening news: he intended to sell his cow-calf business. It had become too much of a hassle to bale hay and he couldn’t find dependable hired hands to help him put it up. To him, selling his business was the only solution. Gary Vermeer realized that the ideal solution just hadn’t been built yet. So the next morning he set out to design it with a team of Vermeer product engineers. They chalked up a design on the factory floor that would become the original Vermeer baler. The first prototype for the “One-Man Hay System” rolled out the door 45 days later. Vermeer balers started being produced commercially in 1972. One of Vermeer’s most popular balers ever built rolled out of Vermeer’s factories in Pella, 28 years later, meeting a need some customers didn’t know they had. In an effort to produce smaller hay packages and meet the needs of part-time farmers who wanted the freedom and convenience of rolling their own bales (and according to their own schedules), Vermeer introduced the Rebel® Baler in 1999. Vermeer’s line of hay harvesting machinery has grown considerably since the first round baler was introduced 41 years ago. Balers, along with rakes, 11

tedders, mowers, silage wrappers and bale processors, make up the complete line of forage products. Operators can depend on Vermeer machines throughout the entire hay harvesting and feeding process. In addition to providing innovative forage solutions here in the United States, Vermeer continues to have a positive impact on quality of life in all corners of the world. Vermeer products appear on job sites from Russia to Brazil and from New Zealand to Canada. Not bad for a company that maintains a personal bond and deep-seated commitment to the town and community
that has supported the company since the start – Pella, Iowa. If innovation is the engine that has powered this market-driven, family-owned company the past six decades, it’s people who keep that engine running smoothly. Every department – from product engineering to manufacturing and from financing to parts and service – is staffed with energetic people who are committed to meeting the needs of Vermeer dealers and customers. Today, the Vermeer team couldn’t be more pleased to be partnering with Great Plains Kubota. The people at GP understand the philosophy that has served Vermeer so well over the years: find a need, fill that need with a product built to last, and simply build the best. For the past couple of years GP has provided customers with Vermeer’s innovative and dependable hay harvesting products. Vermeer and Great Plains Kubota are both committed to finding a better way to get the job done, making a partnership that’s built to last.
THE ROBLES RULES OF RZR RIDING
I
And How to Survive a Rattlesnake Bite
t was supposed to be a fun weekend. My wife and I were excited about our long standing plans of taking our Polaris RZR for a night ride on the red river. It was to be my wife’s first night ride, and a trip to the river we would never forget. It’s Friday Oct. 11th, 2013. A group of Great Plains Duncan customers had planned this night ride for some time, and had invited me on multiple occasions. I was excited to share the night riding experience with my wife, because it offers a completely different experience. The cool night air rushing my face, while navigating a darkened river under a sleepy Oklahoma sky is why I love a night ride. Night rides also let me put all the money I’ve spent in LED lighting and effects to use! My wife and I had to work late that evening, and although we’d known about this ride for some time we still weren’t prepared. After work we took our daughter to her grandma’s house. Then we hurried home, grabbed a couple snacks, changed clothes, and headed south. This was the first mistake we made. Robles Rule #1 Always ride prepared. We didn’t pack anything in case of emergency. We dressed like a couple of beach bums,, and we didn’t have a plan if 12
something were to go wrong. Bringing a few basic essentials on a ride can be the difference between a good time, and a horrible time, or in extreme cases, life or death. For example: flashlights, first aid kits, tools, recovery gear, and phone are all basic essentials. These items should be packed on even the quickest trips, because you never know what might happen. We arrived at the river around 10 p.m. that Friday. Most of the people we were meeting had already started riding. We unloaded the RZR, and made our way down to the bridge. After visiting with some friends my wife and I decided to take a quick trip while our friends rested. The decision to take this quick lap down the trails alone was our second mistake. Robles Rule #2 Don’t ride alone, especially at night, or unprepared! Trail riding is a fun, and typically a harmless activity enjoyed by many people. However, many times we take for granted the dangers involved. A tire blow out, wreck, or mechanical issue can have devastating effects. These incidents become much worse if you are alone, and this is exactly what I found out. We ventured down the trails, zigging and zagging our way through the sand and brush. It was very exhilarating, because GPL Spring 2014

at night you can only see as far as your lights shine. We made it through the trails and down a drop off that led to the river bed. We cruised along the river bed until we couldn’t go any further. It was also time to head back. If we turned around then we’d get back in time to ride out with our friends. Without thinking I threw the RZR into reverse. I hadn’t paid much attention to my surroundings, so I didn’t notice that I was backing into a little neck full of sticky red clay. I quickly realized I was stuck and going nowhere. At this point the first two mistakes we made became very clear to me. I didn’t panic, but after an hour of trying to get the RZR unstuck I began to worry. The cell phone service was terrible. Our phone calls were futile attempts for help, and as time passed we realized no one had noticed we were missing. The irony of this night was that while waiting on the river bed I was very aware of the possibility of encountering a snake. We saw small frogs by the droves, and I just knew we would come across some type of serpent looking for an easy meal. Now that we were past the hour mark of

waiting, we started to get inpatient. We were only a mile or two from the bridge, so we decided with a brisk walk we could get back to the group within the hour. This was our third and possibly biggest mistake. Robles Rule #3 If you get stranded, stay where you are. I’d heard this many times in movies and TV shows, Sorry Bear Grills I didn’t listen! What got me was I didn’t take the situation seriously. It’s important to think a couple steps ahead. Considering the consequence of my actions during what seemed like a menial situation would have saved my wife and I some grief, and over 100K in medical bills. We decided to make the trek to the bridge by following the trail that led away from the river. It’s a sandy trail that is as crooked as the snake that shared it’s venom with me. Since we weren’t prepared, we had to use a cell phone for a flash light. Using the LED light on my wife’s iPhone we attempted to make our way back. To avoid a possible snake encounter we walked away from the water, however, once we were on the trail I become more concerned about being hit by a RZR. Most people drive fast on this trail, and power through it’s many sharp turns. This would leave little time for a driver to react before hitting us. Therefore, the plan was to walk side by side, and be ready to leap out of the way should we meet an oncoming vehicle. The trail is narrow which forced us to walk on top of a divide between trail and brush. We’d made it about 100 yards from the stuck RZR when I stepped on the result of all our bad decisions. When the snake struck it felt like a freight train hit my ankle. I’d never seen or heard a rattle snake in the wild until that point, and even “Thanks to my wife I then I didn’t see it myself. My can write this story. I wife was holding the phone, she owe my life to her.” turned after I started jumping - Alex Robles and yelling, and saw it sitting there ready to strike again if we gave it the opportunity. My mind started racing, because I’ve seen and read things about what happens after a rattle snake bite and it had me a little worried. Thanks to my wife I can write this story. I owe my life to her. She helped me remain calm while walking me the 15

next two miles. She is the reason I am still alive today. The bite hurt really bad. However, after a couple minutes of panic we composed ourselves and realized our only hope was to walk. We walked as quickly as we could back to the group while trying to maintain a relatively normal blood pressure. One of the bad decisions I had made that night was my wardrobe. I was wearing some tennis shoes because I thought I wouldn’t need to get out of the RZR. I WAS WRONG! The rattler got me right above the shoe line. If I had my boots on the snakes fangs might have not reached my skin. I took advantage of my tennis shoes by using the strings to tie around my ankle tightly above the bite. I found out later that this is considered a mistake by some because many times people will tighten them too tight, and the lack of circulation to the limb will do more damage than the bite will. This wasn’t the case in my situation. For me, it greatly reduced the amount of swelling that occurred before I received medical attention. This could be contributed to other things, but I strongly feel that my shoe laces helped my situation immensely. We walked for what seemed to be an eternity, but was actually a little over an hour. The combination of the powdery sand, years of mamma’s mashed potatoes, and a rattlesnake bite drastically effected my walking speed. We finally made it to the bridge and found some friends. Thanks to Kris Palmer, we were able to get a ride to our truck. The next couple of days required intense medical supervision. I initially went to the Waurika hospital for medical attention, but they sent me home after a couple hours of observation. They told me it probably wasn’t that bad of a bite, and I shouldn’t worry unless the swelling increased. The bite occurred sometime around 12 a.m. Saturday morning. I made it to Waurika hospital around 1:30 a.m., and was released at 4 a.m. At 9 a.m. I awoke to immense pain which was now all the way above my knee. My wife quickly called my family to assist her getting me to Duncan Regional Hospital. Snake venom is a weird poison, because it’s a neurotoxin and a blood thinner. After coursing through my veins for nearly ten hours the venom had taken a major

toll on my decision making ability and mental response to the pain I was in. I was hurting, but I wasn’t worried. I had a strange uncaring attitude, and didn’t even want to go to the hospital. Thankfully, I have a really stubborn wife and family. While on a gurney at the Duncan E.R., the nurses and doctors surrounded me. They poked, prodded, and stuck me, in an attempt to save my life. At one point they told me my blood was so thin that if I sneezed I would have busted a blood vessel in my nose, and bled to death. I bruised on contact as they took blood samples, and started IVs to give me the lifesaving medicine needed to survive this accident. I spent two days in ICU, and one day in the hospital. It took twelve vials of anti-venom to combat the snake’s bite, and keep me around. I found out later the anti-venom cost about $5,000 per vial. It was worth every penny if you ask me! I’ve fully recovered, and have no side effects from the incident except doctors bills and a stolen RZR. Robles Rule #4 Have insurance for yourself and your RZR. I was very fortunate to survive this ordeal. I was also fortunate to have both medical insurance and insurance on my RZR. This weekend could have changed my life forever if not for these things. The doctors bills exceeded $150,000. The RZR was stolen while I battled for my life, and anyone who owns a RZR knows they aren’t “cheap” toys. Having insurance is must follow rule to RZR riding. I’ve told this story to many people since last October, and I’m glad for the opportunity to put it in print. Like a lot of people I took weekend rides lightly. Now I ride prepared and with a plan. What happened to me last October is just one scenario of the many dangers of powersports. My hope is not to deter others from hitting the trails as I still love to ride. The next time your ride remember the Robles Rules of RZR Riding:: always ride prepared, never ride alone, when lost stay put, and have insurance.

f there’s one thing Kubota knows it’s how to innovate equipment. No other competing manufacturer provides the maneuverability the versatile lineup of Kubota zero-turn mowers offer. From small residential yards, to large acreages, Z-series mowers fulfill the needs of lawn care professionals and homeowners alike. Designed to stand up to the rigors of daily use, they combine high output gas or diesels engines with a host of features, enabling them to handle any mowing situation. The all new Kubota Z700 series commercial mowers provide the superior cutting performance, easy operations, and maximum comfort the pros need to stay on top in their competitive business. All three 700-series models are equipped with a deep six inch deck and anti-scalp rollers to ensure the fast, clean cut demanded by professionals. With the introduction of the 700-series, pros can now own a Kubota commercial mower at a competitive price. Kubota hasn’t sacrificed quality for price. Instead they designed a line of affordable commercial mowers with the same high standards customers expect in a Kubota zero turn. The ergonomic features of these new mowers make operations smooth and maintenance easy. The 700-series also ensures a high level of stability, because the fuel tank is located under the seat, and it features wide rear tires. They

For years Freda was a secretary, and JR a deacon at what is now the Cornerstone Assembly church where their son, Rev. David H. Peters pastors. The Peters love Kubota tractors. Their first was a used one they bought from another land owner. They now own three Kubota tractors, and have six total on the 160 acres they share with their grandkids.

They love their Kubota’s, and use them for multiple things like; mowing, dirt work, and hay production. Through the generations their Kubota tractors have been a part of their three children, eight grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren’s memories!

As for me, my name is Daphne Dunn. I’ve had a passion for photography since shooting my first wedding at age 15. My grandpa, JR, reads Great Plains living cover to cover, and when he told me about the Great Plains photo contest I knew Daphne’s Photography LLC could have a chance at placing. Sure enough, the photo of my grandparents kissing won first place. This photo reminds me of the love they have for each other, and their long journey together. It will forever be a personal memory of so many things that I simply cannot express
into words. After calling my grandma to tell her we’d won the contest I rushed to their house so we could tell my grandpa together. My grandma was so excited, but she had kept it a secret from my grandpa. When my grandpa came in from working outside I told him our photo got first in the GP photo contest! Tears came to his eyes as he smiled at my grandma with joy. My grandparents are hardworking land owners with hearts for the lord. The profound love they have for each other is stronger than ever. I thank these wonderful people for teaching their family the importance working together, and how love and devotion can change lives. My husband and I live with our two little girls on the 160 acres, as does my sister’s family of seven, my brother’s family of four, and soon to be my parents. We do a lot together thanks to the importance of faith and family my grandparents, Freda and JR Peters, instilled in all of us. From cook outs at the back pond to attending church functions, all our family gatherings have one thing in common, love.
Tree Management Made Easy
P
eople generally think of compact track loaders as being an ideal piece of equipment for construction applications. However, Kubota SVL75 and SVL90 compact track loaders could possibly be the most versatile machine on a farm or ranch. Tree removal, for example can be an arduous task. Thankfully there are a variety of attachments specifically designed to work with the Kubota SVL series that: saw, snip, cut, pull, tear, dig, mulch, mow, haul, and completely obliterate smaller to medium sized trees. Here’s a preview of several attachments available at Great Plains Kubota that feature different methods. Stump Buckets - The basic design of stump buckets enables them to up-root trees with ease. Tree Shears - Simply put, shears are like large scissors. In one cut the M&M Hydra-Clip can cut 16” trees flush to the ground. Tree Saws - Tree saws are quick and effective. Both the Marshall Tree Saw and the Turbo Saw are capable of cutting hundreds of trees an hour. The Marshall Tree Saw has a uniquely powerful blade that isn’t affected by mud and rock, while the Turbo Saw uses a high speed circular cutting disc to cut at speeds of up to ten inches per second in both horizontal and vertical positions. Mulchers - Mulchers are the one stop shop attachment for complete tree obliteration. They work slower, and are more expensive than other attachments, but leave nothing but a pile of shavings in their wake. The Kubota SVL and Bradco Magnum Mulcher are the ultimate combo for complete tree control. Grapples - Grapples are essential for handling and piling the large amounts of downed trees shears and saws create. Unless a mulcher is being used, grapples are a must have attachment in any tree removal job. 28

Ending the Moisture Guessing Game Y ears from now when moisture sensors on balers are as commonplace as calculators on cell phones, it’s likely that younger generations will chuckle at how growers once checked for moisture in their hay. They will sit awestruck around the campfire, listening to unbelievable tales of how “old-timers” used to hop out of the cab and check it manually. Their jaws will drop when hearing how they used to physically pick up the hay with their bare hands, grabbing and twisting (some even biting) the hay, doing anything to it that might elicit some clue as to how much moisture was hidden within. “How bizarre … how ludicrous!” Such will be the reaction of future generations when they hear of the practices
many growers still employ today. To be sure, in these times it isn’t out of the ordinary for haymakers to “use their gut” to determine moisture levels. But the method is losing advocates as more growers realize the consequences of inaccurate moisture estimates. “Most folks would be surprised to know what their gut tells them is three to five point different than it actually is,” said Phil Chrisman, Vermeer Baler Product Manager. The tendency, according to Chrisman, is to bale when the hay is too wet, which can lead to mold, heat and nutritional loss due to spoilage. By having a moisture sensor in the baler that reads real-time moisture levels, you can make an informed decision on when to bale.
“If the sensor says it’s at 18 percent moisture, I know that’s too wet to bale. So you ask, ‘Do I have time to stop baling and wait for it to dry? What’s my schedule like? What is the weather like?’ Now you can plan and make decisions from a nutrient value standpoint,” Chrisman said. Chrisman said even the best operators – or those who can most accurately gage moisture levels on their own – will encounter anomalies in the field that they would never think of. In other words, moisture levels are seldom consistent across entire fields, and only with a moisture sensor can you be certain of changing moisture levels at all
times. Vermeer introduced its first moisture sensor on the Super M Baler in 2008, and currently offers optional moisture sensors on Rebel® Series Balers, N Series Balers, Rancher® Series Balers

and Super M Series Balers. Popularity of new Vermeer balers including moisture sensing technology has more than doubled in the past few years.

The Code
W
Live Each Day With Courage
hen the cowboy first began grazing cattle on the open range there was no law on the frontier. Lack of written law made it necessary for him to frame his own. Overtime a cowboy’s rules of behavior became known as the "Code of the West." This code was simply a common sense of ethics and fair play. Not unlike what Jesus said in Matthew 7:12, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Most cowboys, but certainly not all, were honorable. They lived by a code that placed the needs of their cattle, horses and fellow men in front of their own. I believe these unwritten rules are as relative today as they were before a single strand of barbwire existed in Oklahoma. In fact, I would go as far as saying that America would be a far better place today if more of us lived by the “Code of the West”. Unfortunately, it’s hard to communicate an unwritten code to the next generation. God gave Moses The Ten Commandments to communicate to His people how He wanted them to live. For the very same reason God gave us His written Word in the Bible. The more you study how past generations of cowboys conducted their lives the more you’ll learn their code was based upon principles of the Bible. In his 2004 book, Cowboy Ethics – What Wall Street Can Learn from the Code of the West, Jim Owen made a heartfelt case for a new approach to business ethics, one that goes back to simple, timeless principles like those of the cowboy code. Many have tried to put these unwritten rules to paper but Mr. Owen has the list that I like best. He has translated the unwritten Code of the West into Ten Principles to Live By. Code of the West 1. Live each day with courage. 2. Take pride in your work. 3. Always finish what you start. 4. Do what has to be done. 5. Be tough, but fair. 6. When you make a promise, keep it. 7. Ride for the brand. 8. Talk less, and say more. 9. Remember that some things aren't for sale. 10. Know where to draw the line. In the next ten issues of Great Plains living I will expand on the “Code of the West” and explore the Biblical principals it’s based upon. In this issue I’ll start with, Live Each Day with Courage. Living everyday with courage can be the difference between success and failure. Being brave however, is not always that easy. There are constant circumstances in our lives that can keep us discouraged, it’s these times we need a inspiration to get up, dust ourselves off, and go on. For the cowboy, there was no lack of inspiration on the open range. His survival depended on it. From astrology to Zen we find people today looking for inspiration to fill a void in their daily lives. My source of courage comes from my faith in Jesus. Philippians 4:13 “I can do greatplainskubota.com
all things through Christ who strengthens me.” My faith gives me the strength to face the things in life I don’t look forward to. Courage is peculiar, because it allows you to accomplish things you normally wouldn’t attempt, and it’s contagious nature often inspires others. The courage of the disciples to tell of Jesus’ resurrection, despite imprisonment or death, inspired many to believe. As you can see in Acts chapter 4, their courage caused five thousand men to “A man’s got to have believe the resurrection in a very a code, a creed to live by, no matter his job.” short period of time. Tradition tells us that most of the disciples - John Wayne were executed because they had the courage to proclaim their belief in Jesus. Even today, the courageous acts by these disciples inspire people to believe. Acts 4: 1 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand. 5 The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” 13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished. As John Wayne said, “A man’s got to have a code”. Do you have a code? If so consider it’s principals, and if you adhere to them. If you don’t have a code I suggest getting one, and to start working at living by it. My hope would be that your code is based upon Biblical principles. 31
