Are These Great Plains Or What?

You often hear companies being referred to as families or employees as family members. I used to think that was just a marketing tactic to make the company more approachable. It wasn’t until I started working at Great Plains Kubota as Advertising Director that my ideas on this changed. I’ve been here over a year now and I have never worked for a company that involves it’s employees and their families at such a level. At Great Plains you’re treated as a individual not just another employee who punches in and punches out, flying low under the radar. I’ve found that you get back what you put in and isn’t that what we are all seeking? It really all boils down to sound management practices. Our recent advertising campaign, “Riding for the Brand” means more than loyalty and pride. It is what we do as employees of Great Plains, just as a cowboy would represent a brand. As employees of Great Plains, we take pride in our products, are loyal to our customers and treat each other like family.

I’d like to say thanks to all who have taken the time to open the pages of this magazine. The concept of Great Plains Living has been in the works for over a year and has finally become a reality. At Great Plains we are always looking for a way to set ourselves apart from other equipment dealers. This magazine is more than informative stories; it is a way for us to connect with you. With this first issue we don’t really know what to expect, but we can only hope that we hear from you.

In this spring edition you will find company histories and information all on products we offer at Great Plains. We would love to hear about your experiences whether it’s an exciting hunting trip or a great day working on your place. It wouldn’t be the Great Plains without great food. ooted in the heartland of America is a remarkable story. One that transformed the small town of Pella, Iowa, and changed the world of agriculture. It’s the story of a one-man operation that evolved over six decades into one of the premier manufacturers of agricultural and environmental equipment in the world.

It begins with a man who liked to walk the fields with neighboring farmers, discussing the many challenges they faced on the job.

It was the 1940s and the Second World War raged on in Europe and the Asia-Pacific. With hundreds of thousands of Americans engaged in battle, fighting tyranny abroad in the name of freedom and honor, farmers back home were having a tough time finding good help.

Back then unloading grain was among the most labor-intensive jobs on the farm, and the shortage of dependable hired hands only made matters worse. A man named Gary Vermeer set out to find a better way to get the job done. He outfitted his grain wagon with a simple mechanical hoist that unloaded grain faster and easier.

Pleased with the results, he shared his innovation with neighboring farmers. Word spread quickly and soon farmers from all over the 855-4KUBOTA

area wanted Gary Vermeer to modify their wagons. The first Vermeer innovation was a hit.

On November 22, 1948, Gary Vermeer and his cousin Ralph Vermeer, a local banker, started Vermeer Manufacturing Co. From day one the company’s philosophy mirrored what Gary Vermeer had achieved with his grain wagon hoist: find a need, fill that need with a product built to last, and simply build the best. Even as the company began to grow and expand its product line, that philosophy continued to inspire every product Vermeer built.

In 1950, the company introduced portable PTO-powered hammermills. Instead of using flat belts and pulleys that would often slip in cold or wet weather to grind grain, Vermeer’s Pow-R-Drive models harnessed the power take-off (PTO) of tractors. The

product’s success helped spark growth for the young company, and later prompted Vermeer to introduce additional PTO-driven products.

Sometimes the best solution to a problem presents itself unexpectedly. Such was the case with the revolutionary stump cutter Vermeer unveiled in 1957. While testing a new stump cutter prototype, a Vermeer employee inadvertently hit the wrong lever, causing the cutting wheel to move horizontally across the stump. It was a better way to get the job done, and the discovery resulted in a top-of-theline stump cutter design that is still used today.

Vermeer’s signature innovation, one that would revolutionize the hay harvesting industry forever, came in 1971. Gary Vermeer went on an early morning walk with a close friend who shared with GREAT PLAINS LIVING 7

Built To Last Cont. him some disheartening news: he intended to sell his cow-calf business. It had become too much of a hassle to bale hay and he couldn’t find dependable hired hands to help him put it up. To him, selling his business was the only solution.

Gary Vermeer realized that the ideal solution just hadn’t been built yet. So the next morning he set out to design it with a team of Vermeer product engineers. They chalked up a design on the factory floor that would become the original Vermeer baler. The first prototype for the “One-Man Hay System” rolled out the door 45 days later. Vermeer balers started being produced commercially in 1972.

One of Vermeer’s most popular balers ever built rolled out of Vermeer’s factories in Pella, 28 years later, meeting a need some customers didn’t know they had.

In an effort to produce smaller hay packages and meet the needs of part-time farmers who wanted the freedom and convenience of rolling their own bales (and according to

their own schedules), Vermeer introduced the Rebel® Baler in 1999.

Vermeer’s line of hay harvesting machinery has grown considerably since the first round baler was introduced 41 years ago. Balers, along with rakes, tedders, mowers, silage wrappers and bale processors, make up the complete line of forage products. Operators can depend on Vermeer machines throughout the entire hay harvesting and feeding process.

In addition to providing innovative forage solutions here in the United States, Vermeer continues to have a positive impact on quality of life in all corners of the world.

Successful Seasons With summer months come damaging elements that can be hazards to your Kubota’s health. A few simple steps and a little extra time can go a long way when the life of your tractor or implement is on the line.

There are several important things you can do as a responsible Kubota tractor owner this hay season. Keeping your radiator fins clean as well as your radiator and hydraulic fluid levels properly filled are just the beginning. Summer brings the heat and the heat brings the dust so check these fluids often along with your fuel filter sediment bulb. This should be cleaned and checked for optimal operating performance.

A lot of people beat the heat with a nice air conditioned cab. Give your tractors cab more attention than you would your cars since tractors generally work harder in rougher elements than most vehicles. Check your cabs condenser fins and cabin filters to maintain the cooled air you worked so hard for. One of the biggest failures to air conditioners during the hay season is not checking your radiator.

Another good practice before baling hay or any tractor operation is to do an overall inspection of your Kubota. Check for leaks around your tractor. Ask yourself what should the fluids look

like and take into consideration what operations will take place during your tractors upcoming hours.

One easy maintenance step that should always be done is properly greasing your grease fittings. Get to know where all your greasing locations are and use them.

In the field it is important to check and keep your radiator screens cleaned. You might think that you could never get anything done when you spend so much time monitoring and checking the tractor? Look for the signs.

If the temperature range is above normal, stop and blow out the radiator screens and check the fluids. Another in the field tip that will help prolong performance is simply knowing when to stop. If something breaks or your tractor shows symptoms something isn’t right don’t push it. Ignoring a small problem will create a big problem down the road. We always worry about time lost. In the field if we look at the big picture, we see time saved.

Jamie Anderson, Great Plains Kubota Tech- nician stresses the importance of the owner’s manual.

He says,

Operator Maintenance & Observation are Key “First and foremost read your owner’s manual and keep it with you. I hear: I’ve been around tractors my whole life I don’t need to read those things. Well, tractors today aren’t what they where ten years ago. Technology and advancements keep changing, so it is very important you read and know your manual.” Some issues Anderson has run into with this were simple warning lights. On certain Kubota L-Series tractors a maintenance minder light comes on every 50 hours to remind owners of upcoming maintenance. People have brought their tractor in to diagnose this issue when time and money could have been saved by simply reading the owner’s manual.

Keeping a sharp eye on your tires is another small step you should take. Check the lug nuts often and always make sure they are tight and even. Also, check tire pressure.

Tire pressure can have a direct effect on implement performance.

On the topic of your implements it is important that you get to know them just as well. Keep belts tight, blades sharp, and grease fittings pumped up. One obvious thing never to do is to inspect your implement while your PTO is running. It’s hard to have another season without another hand. Again, read the owner’s manual and keep it with you.

Getting to know how your implement operates under normal conditions will give you a better idea of what to expect in harsher, more variable conditions.

Make sure all covers and shields are in place and unbroken. Rigging up your own guards is never a good idea. There are plenty of funny stories to accompany this issue but for most the outcome isn’t so funny.

Lastly, end you’re day with a good clean up. When you’re done blow out your screens and any debris on and in your tractor and implement. When bailing hay it is really important not to let hay sit. Chaff gathers around in tight places and since hay is already dry a chance for fire can occur.

The key to a successful season is operator maintenance and observation. Give your tractor a little time and effort now so it can give you a lot of time and effort in the future. Most Kubota manuals have a checklist and hourly mainte-

nance schedule. Use the checklist and adhere to the recommended maintenance scheduling. It doesn’t hurt to go over in hours but to wait several hundred hours later before servicing can have a negative affect especially when working your tractor hard.

There is always a better chance before than after. This holds true for maintenance and breakage.

Don’t let the smaller things that are going to happen become the bigger things that you don’t want to happen.

As a heavy equipment mechanic touring in Desert Storm, he knows all to well the importance of operator maintenance and observation. Of course sand isn’t hay but the end results of negligence are and will always be the same.

Getting Out, Polaris Style

Providing customers a way out is a way of living for Polaris

he First 50 years of Polaris history was shaped by visionaries who turned their dreams into outstanding products and experiences.

Looking back at the last half century you’ll find Polaris riders finding their way to the back country in countless different ways.

Polaris Industries started in the early 1950s and hasn’t slowed down since. A Minnesota based farm equipment shop discovered it had the creativity and passion to produce “snow machines” thus creating the birth of Polaris Industries.

But instead you got something that ended up being worthless.

Adjuvant ( Surfactants, stickers, spreaders, drift control) are materials that are added to your sprayer tank to increase the effectiveness of the pesticide you are using. How many times have you heard that “soap works just as good”? Well, it might, but most won’t work as well. First, although soaps are essentially surfactants, they are not as concentrated as surfactants manufactured for use with agricultural pesticides. Household soaps usually have 10- 20% surfactant while Ag. Surfactant has a concentration of 50 to 90 %. This can make a big GREAT PLAINS LIVING 14

difference when it comes to enhancing the effectiveness of pesticide activity. Household soaps can also create problems with excessive foaming in the tank and some of these soaps will react with hard water to produce scum and precipitants that can affect pesticide performance. On the other hand most Ag. Surfactants were developed to work in sprayer tank conditions and are not as foamy and will not react with hard water.

Surfactants, or surface acting agents are most often used with herbicides to help a pesticide spread over and penetrate the waxy cuticle of the leaf or to penetrate through the small hairs present on the leaf surface. Since water has a high surface tension it tends to maintain its round, droplet shape when sitting on the surface of the leaf. The surfactant acts to

When you are considering using a surfactant, always consult the label as to the kind of surfactant recommended and to when its addition to the pesticide will help in enhancing the control of the pesticide. Most pesticide companies have spent several years studying how surfactants work with their products and know a lot better than we can guess as to what surfactant will work best with their product.

Remember dish washing soap goes in the sink, not the sprayer.

Donita Jones’ Bar-B-Que Brisket (From the Centennial Edition Recipe Book of the Baptist Homes for Children)

1 Beef Brisket Celery Salt Garlic Powder Onion Salt Meat Tenderizer 1/2 Bottle Liquid Smoke 1 Bottle Barbecue Sauce Worcestershire Sauce Pepper

1. The night before cooking, trim all the fat of the brisket.

2. Cover one side with celery salt, garlic powder, onion salt, meat tenderizer, and 1/2 bottle of liquid smoke. Wrap in foil and refrigerate over night. Before baking sprinkle with pepper and Worcestershire sauce.

3. Bake at 275 degrees for at least 5 hours.

4. Uncover and pour barbecue sauce over the brisket and bake one additional hour at 250 degrees.

Mrs. Adam’s Chocolate Cookies (Mrs. Adams was the custodian at Maysville High School during the 70’s) 1/2 cup butter 1 1/2 cup sugar 3 eggs 1 cup sour cream 1 T vanilla 2 3/4 cups flour 1/2 t soda, 1/2 t baking powder 1/2 salt 6 T cocoa 1 cup chopped nuts

1. Cream butter, sugar, eggs, sour cream and vanilla.

2. Beat well 3. Combine dry ingredients and add to mixture.

4. Add nuts.

5. Chill one hour.

6. Drop on greased cookie sheet.

7. Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes.

ocal celebrities Cord and Jet McCoy seemed like the obvious choice to be incorporated in Great Plains “Ride With The Brand,” advertising campaign. At Great Plains we ride for the brands we sell by standing by our products and our customers. Sitting down with the McCoy’s for a little Q&A really shed light as to why they have been such great representatives.

Q: What made you decide to work with Great Plains?

Jet: For me it was the people, just the fact that we were working with good people. Kubota is a good tractor but you can get a tractor a lot of different places.

Cord: I agree with Jet, but another thing is the quality in the equipment. Especially if you have driven a Kubota. I use it around the house all the time. Pretty much whatever my wife needs to get done around the place it handles it. We were customers here before but after the race we knew we could help each other out so it

worked both ways.

Q: How has your experience been working with the people of Great Plains?

Jet: The experience has been great, its not just the owners or the service dept. or sales, everyone has been the type of people you can get along with and trust.

Cord: I agree with Jet, when you walk out of here you know from the simple handshake that you have been told strait up the good things and the bad things. When they sell you something in here they take care of it, it’s a great company to do business. You know they want you to be their life long customers.

Q: What kind of tractors do you guys use and what do you use them for?

Jet: I use a Kubota L3400 with a front end loader. It’s a good tractor.

Cord: I use a L4400, Jet’s is real handy in his situation with horse stalls and things like that but for mine I’m hauling big round bales

out to the pasture to feed horses and bucking bulls, dragging the arena I even move other equipment around with it.

Q: What do you like best about your Kubota?

Jet: For me it’s the fact that it’s easy. The shifting is easy, forward and reverse, and PTO are easy.

Everything is accessible and easy to find. When I want to change implements I don’t have to get the owners manual out to see what handle to pull on.

Cord: The dependability of the tractor is really great but just like Jet said it’s easy. In one day I might have a hay spike on the front, front end loader on the front, disc on the back, drag on the back and all in the same day.

All of these things I change out by myself. You don’t have to be an expert or raised on a farm to run these tractors.

Q: What does Riding for the Brand mean to you?

Jet: It’s about the people, the actual brand doesn’t mean as much

as the people that stand behind the brand. It’s riding with the people that make that brand what it is. I feel Great Plains has done a great job building a great reputation with the people they do business with. I don’t mind standing behind a company that does business that way.

Cord: Brands have been around for hundreds of years. When you see a brand, it gives you an idea of the whole thing. Great Plains has made a great brand because the people

made it that way Q: What has been going on since the Amazing Race?

Jet: Back to business as usually for me, feeding cows and riding horses.

Cord: Nothing has really changed.

I’m still working with livestock and most livestock didn’t get to watch the Amazing Race.

Q: What did you take home from the race?

Jet: I got a different world view.

It’s eye opening on how great it is to live in the United States.

Cord: You thank God you got to grow up with people of this area that have great morals and work ethic.

Q: What do you guys do in your spare time?

Jet: Sleep.

Cord: I do a bunch of traveling around professional bull riding events, sometimes I feel like I put a

week’s worth of work in just a few days.

Q: What book is on your night stand right now?

Cord: The Bible Jet: “Strengthening Your Grip”, by Chuck Swindoll. It’s a book about strengthening your attitudes on everything and how to handle things better from a scriptural perspective.

Q: If you could only eat one type of food for the rest of your life what would it be?

Jet: Steak, medium.

Cord: Wagyu Q: Ragu?

Cord: Its a type of beef Jet: W-A-G-Y-U! Jet: It’s the best beef you could have.

It’s good to know I just eat beef.

I don’t raise it. I could have sworn Cord said he loved Ragu.

Helping Hands How a simple act of kindness can change lives.

T

aking care of a family farm can be an overwhelming task. Linda and Wesley Evans know this all too well. Linda recently inherited the family farm after the unexpected passing of her parents.

The decision to buy a new tractor was made so they started looking for an easy to use tractor that was reasonably priced.

“I knew if I was going to survive on the farm I would need to buy a tractor. I bought a 54 horse Kubota with a cab, front-end loader, and brushhog. I knew this was a lot more tractor than I was farm-girl,” Linda said.

Linda’s son and only child, Wesley Evans, knows a lot about running tractors. He grew up on tractors and like most kids he rode on a tractor in his grandfather’s lap. In March of 2006 Wesley was in a car accident on I-35 between Davis and Ardmore which left him paralyzed. Through time and GREAT PLAINS LIVING 24

determination he is now classified as a high-functioning quadriplegic.

Wesley loves working the family farm and at first he watched helplessly as his mom struggled through the hard seasons.

The generosity of one man was about to change their situation. Jerry Garrett, a business acquaintance of Linda knew of their situation on the farm and had expressed that he wanted to help. When Garrett heard about Wesley’s enthusiasm in helping on the farm and that he was doing what he could to drive the tractor, he saw an opportunity to lend a helping hand. Garret enjoys restoring old tractors and going to tractor shows and is always looking for a beneficial project.

One day at work Linda received a surprising phone call from Jerry asking if he could build a ramp for Wesley. He explained that he had been thinking about how to go about it ever since the two had discussed the Evans’s situation. He

had already been brainstorming with a friend about different ideas on the construction of the ramp and was excited about the project!

Linda quickly agreed and offered to pay for the materials, but Jerry refused, saying it was just something he would like to do.

After several weeks the ramp was complete and ready to use.

Linda recalls when the ramp was delivered, “At 8:30 on a Saturday morning in April, Jerry pulled in the driveway, driving his shiny red pick-up truck, pulling a long trailer carrying a beautiful steel ramp glistening in the morning sunshine!

This was no ordinary ramp....it was fabulous! It was handsomely constructed of strong steel and shiny metal and it was trimmed in...

Kubota Orange”! Garrett spent the rest of the day making adjustments and helping Wesley practice getting in and out of the tractor. One look at the ramp and one can tell the time and effort Garret put into this SPRING 2012

project. The ramp itself is made of heavy gauge diamond plated steel fitted with safety rails. At the top platform there is an extension that goes from the ramp to the cab of the tractor for added stability and safety. An adjustable swinging bar aides Wesley during his transfer along with a handle bar added in the cab.

“The best part of the whole thing is the structure of the ramp and the way the top platform attaches to the cab,” said Wesley.

Wesley also commented on how the Kubota tractor was an easy fit for him.

“The Kubota is very simple to operate and there isn’t a lot of gadgets. The interior features of the cab and how it’s constructed work well for me. The best thing about it for me is the cruise control. The 855-4KUBOTA

hydrostatic transmission and other features of the electronic systems have all made it possible for me to use the tractor to brushhog and feed the cows. I would put Kubota up there with the best of tractors.”

Wesley creative mind has added to the outfitting of the Kubota as well. A piece of satellite dish attached to the gas pedal serves as his gas control.

“When I looked up and saw an old satellite dish hanging in the barn I knew I could use it for something,” said Wesley.

The project Terry Garret decided to do is more than an act of kindness. His generous act has given hope to a determined person whose love of the family farm won’t be changed because of simple movements we take for granted every day.

A Place of Hope Baptist Home For Girls Every little girl has hopes and dreams.

Many girls dream of one day being

married to Mr. Right, having children and a

home surrounded

with a white picket fence. Some girls hope to get a good education and make a contribution to society. Some girls hope to forget the experiences of the past and dream of a life where they feel safe, secure, and loved.

Baptist Home for Girls, Madill, is a residential home where girls are given the opportunity to pursue their hopes. Along with reaching for their dreams, they have opportunities to heal from past nightmares. With a Christian staff that is available to consistently provide for their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, the girls gradually learn to trust. With an ability to trust, they grow in their confidence to make good choices.

Experiencing the results and success of those good choices, they then believe their dreams can come true.

Not every girl who is accepted into placement is from a background of abuse or neglect.

Some girls come from good and godly homes and have chosen for a time to engage in teen rebellion. In 855-4KUBOTA

seeking to prevent their child from making a choice that could be lifealtering, some parents or grandparents bring their daughters for a time of intervention.

The girls who reside at Baptist Home for Girls may stay for varied times. Some may only need a 9-12 month time period to learn responsibility and trust. Others, though, may find that this is the place where they can have a firm foundation and build a successful life, and stay to complete their high school education. There is also an independent living program for those who complete high school to assist them in transitioning into further education or beginning their employment.

The residents at Baptist Home for Girls have numerous opportunities! Many of the girls are involved in extracurricular activities through the school, including soccer, track, basketball, softball, and competitive speech. There are also opportunities for activities through the local churches they attend, including church camp, sports teams, and mission trips.

The girls can also be involved in many activities available on the campus. Many of the girls enjoy the campus animal program. In the animal program the girls have the opportunity, if they chose to do so, to help in caring

for steers, pigs, sheep, and goats.

The girls are responsible to feed, groom, and walk their animals and prepare them for local livestock shows. Some of the girls are able to earn money from their prizewinning animals.

Each year on the campus the girls help host the Raymond Gary Fish Fry. This event was originally held by Governor Raymond Gary, who in 1976 donated the land and money for the initial cottage. This is held in August each year and is open to the public. It is an opportunity for the girls to thank the community and donors who have provided faithful support.

In October each year the girls participate in a Style Show, which is now held at the Ardmore Convention Center. Each girl is allowed to shop for one complete school outfit and one complete dress outfit. They then wear these as they walk down a runway amongst tables of supporters. While most of the girls are extremely nervous during this, it is also an enormous boost to their self-confidence. As they walk the runway, they are able to believe, perhaps for the first time, that they are beautiful, accepted, and a person of worth.

Each year in April the girls help host a bass fishing tournament. The girls help provide food GREAT PLAINS LIVING 29

Place of Hope Cont. and drinks for those entered in the tournament. Some of the girls have experienced going fishing with the campus staff, and enjoy watching the results of more experienced anglers.

The residents at Baptist Home for Girls are encouraged to volunteer to help others. Having received so much from others, the girls can show their appreciation through volunteer projects.

Some of the girls are involved in food pantries and providing meals for those in need. Others have helped with such things as decorating and doing hair and nails for a “Senior” prom, at a nearby retirement village. The girls have also helped host meals for donors and

the Oklahoma Baptist Directors of Missions.

To build a home requires workers and tools. While there is always godly trained staff available for the girls, there are countless others who volunteer their time, services, and resources to help these young ladies pursue their dreams. Without such support and encouragement, many could easily become discouraged and give up.

In the gazebo on campus, surrounded with white chairs filled with family and friends, one of the girls was recently married. Great Plains Rental in Ardmore was able to provide the white wedding chairs to help make one girl’s dream wedding come true.

The staff at the Baptist Home for Girls believes that God weaves together committed staff, volunteers, and various resources given to Him to help raise young girls to become godly, virtuous women. They claim the Scripture verse Jeremiah 29:11, “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘…plans to give you hope and a future.’”
