Editorial Bad Garden

up with a family full of green thumbs you’d think I could grow a few fresh tomatoes! This isn’t the G rowing case however. As the only member of my family who hunts, I guess you’d say that while most of my family

have a green thumb, I have a red thumb. They harvest what they grow, I harvest what I hunt. My summer vegetables have always been on tap, and at little or no cost to me. Sure, I’ve always helped my dad or grandpa out where I could, but for the most part they’ve done all the work. Eating the juiciest tomatoes, the sweetest corn, and the tenderiest green beans has always just a part of summer, with each produce variety replacing the next like summer sign posts marking the season. Time goes by slower when you’re younger, but as you grow older there never seems to be enough of it. I should have taken this into consideration when I decided to put my first vegetable garden in at my parents’ house. Earlier this year I realized my dad was boycotting any and all gardening involvement. This meant if I wanted homegrown produce, I would have to grow it myself. It wasn’t until the majority of the hard work was out of the way that I found out why I was growing the veggies instead of my dad: the squirrels. Things started off well in garden. Picking out what to plant and where to plant it was almost a family event. At first, watering didn’t seem to be such a chore, but then summer kicked in to high gear. Finding the time to really soak the ground was scarce. Then, just as everything was looking better, the squirrels started in on the tomatoes. Just like the pecans at my house, the cocky rodents would cut the tomatoes green, before they had a chance to ripen. Once the tomatoes were gone I pretty much gave up. I look back and blame everything on the squirrels, but it’s probably just the red thumb in me coming out, looking for an excuse to take up eating tree rats. It was a bad garden anyway. Reed Boettcher - Editor

Tamed Wildlife: This doe didn’t spook the entire time I was watering the garden, on this particular day. In fact, I thought she might come drink from the hose. The vegetables didn’t stand a chance with the high number of deer and squirrels. The only thing I can seem to grow are onions, sunflowers, and two beautiful daughters (Isabell & Lydia). Texas Gov. Abbott Welcomes Kubota to Grapevine, Celebrates Official Opening of North American Headquarters GRAPEVINE, Tx., (Apr. 7, 2017) – Kubota Tractor Corporation unveiled its new North American headquarters building in Grapevine, Texas, today in a special ribbon cutting ceremony with Governor Greg Abbott, Masatoshi Kimata, President and Representative Director of the Kubota Group, along with State and local officials and supporters from the Grapevine community who all helped to usher in a new era for the company. The company’s move to Texas from Torrance, Calif., is the most significant change it has undertaken in its successful 45-year history in the U.S., where it has introduced over the years a full line of iconic orange tractors, construction equipment, lawn and garden equipment and utility vehicles. “Today is an important day for Kubota as this new building is both a testament to our commitment to the future growth of our business in the U.S., and our pledge of being a socially responsible corporate citizen and active business partner with the great state of Texas and the City of Grapevine,” said Mr. Masato Yoshikawa, President and CEO of Kubota Tractor Corporation, at today’s ceremony. “As a new employer to the area, our hope is to continue to attract talent from the local community with this open environment, stateof-the art workplace and continue our long-term growth strategy to strengthen the Kubota brand in the U.S.” Kubota has invested more than $50 million in the three-story, environmentally-friendly office building, which totals 193,000 square feet, and includes an onsite research and development facility, and is designed to maximize work efficiencies and conserve resources in alignment with Kubota’s global brand statement, “For Earth, For Life.” “Kubota is the model business partner,” said Governor Abbott. “The new headquarters not only stands as a symbol for their hard work up to this moment, but also for the solid foundation for which they’re able to continue building for a prosperous future here in Texas. We are proud that job-creating industry leaders like Kubota are calling Texas home, and thank them for their confidence in the Lone Star State and the hard-working people of Grapevine.” The headquarters building houses Kubota Tractor Corporation and Kubota Credit Corporation, placing Kubota’s leadership and professional staff closer to the company’s major markets and its manufacturing, assembly and distribution facilities in Georgia and Kansas. By centrally locating more of its operations, Kubota will be able to respond more quickly to changes in markets and the industry, and streamline its operations for both dealer and customer benefit. Currently, 275 employees are working in Grapevine as a culmination of new hires and relocated employees from Torrance, Calif., and Suwanee, Ga. The building is large enough to accommodate nearly 600 employees with room to expand.

WHY CRAIG WOFFORD SWITCHED

Article And Photos Submitted By Vermeer

nce upon a time in Lula, Oklahoma, there was a rancher in search of a baler with true grit. His wish list seemed simple enough: He wanted a machine built tough to withstand rough land, something simple to operate and with a reasonable price point to protect his pocketbook. That rancher was Craig Wofford. After owning and running nearly every brand out there he finally found the perfect fit for his operation — the Vermeer 604N baler. Wofford admits it took some convincing to even give Vermeer a shot. He’d never pulled yellow iron before. After a year of smooth sailing, he sees yellow in

a new light. He believes in Vermeer. “I kind of have to see things before I believe them,” Wofford explained. “Great Plains Kubota persuaded me to try a Vermeer baler, and I don’t regret buying it. It’s done everything they said it’d do. So I have no regrets on buying it at all.” Wofford, a third-generation rancher, puts up 8,000 to 10,000 bales per year on his farm just outside of Lula and loves every minute of the rural lifestyle. “It’s just home,” Wofford said in a wistful voice. “I don’t want to go anywhere else. The sky is pretty, there’s

no city traffic, no hustle and bustle. You just watch the cows graze across the pasture and watch the horses grazing. It’s peaceful — it’s God’s country.” When Wofford was due for a new baler, he knew he was ready to try something different. The other brands of balers just weren’t tough enough, productive enough, or gritty enough. The Vermeer 604N baler changed that. Once his neighbors noticed him hauling around that yellow iron they inquired immediately. “They’ve asked me all the questions,” Wofford said with an amused grin. “I say to them, “As far as I can tell the 604N is as good, if not better, than other brands. It

makes a bale as tight, if not tighter, than anything else I’ve run.” With such a large amount of hay to bale and nothing but rough ground to work with, Wofford needed a baler built for durability — something that could hold its own. “The 604N baler is just heavier — I mean these fields we bale are rough. It’s not like it’s groomed ground on our farm,” Wofford explained. The rugged field conditions took a toll on his previous balers. Wofford still grimaces while reminiscing about all the pickup teeth he’s changed Continued on pg11

the switch continued... out over the years. With the Vermeer 604N he doesn’t do that very often anymore. Not that he misses it one bit. “The pickup attachment teeth in the 604N are twice as heavy duty as my old baler,” Wofford said with a hint of pride. “I was constantly breaking teeth. This one particular baler didn’t have a clutch on the pickup attachment, so if you happened to get on a high spot when you were making a bale, it was just continually setting there spinning and you could just hear those teeth popping off.” In the year that Wofford has run the 604N, he hasn’t had to change a single pickup attachment tooth. Not one. “With the 604N, when the bale is ready to tie, the clutch kicks in and the pickup attachment stops,” Wofford explained. “I really like that feature in this baler, because I do not like changing pickup attachment teeth. It’s a chore to change them. You bust your knuckles and there’s a lot of swearing going on. It takes an hour to change them and time is money.” In addition to the durability of the 604N, Wofford appreciates the simplicity of its design, which can mean better productivity, ease of use and less

the switch continued... maintenance. “I mean all balers have several working parts don’t get me wrong, but this baler is a pretty simple design,” Wofford said. “There’s not all of that unnecessary bells and whistles and it does the job.” Now that he is armed with the durability and simplicity of Vermeer, Wofford said he can foresee a few more yellow iron purchases in the future. In fact, he’d

buy another 604N next time he’s in the market for a new baler. “I can’t complain — not at all — on anything,” Wofford exclaimed. “The 604N baler proved itself to me and that’s what I’ve got to see to represent something.” And that’s why Craig Wofford switched to the Vermeer 604N baler *Information printed above was gathered from a third party who was advised his/her experience might be featured in marketing materials. Making The Switch Again...

Since this article was first published by Vermeer, Craig Wofford has purchased another Vermeer 604N. He went to Great Plains Ada and bought another 604N from Gary Huffstutlar. For good measure GPL checked in with Wofford to get an update on his Vermeer baler’s performance. Here’s what he had to say; “I bought my second Vermeer 604N last year from Gary, and just like the first one I bought, I’ve had no complaints. I baled with it all last year, and all this year without ever having to change pickup attachment teeth. As I mentioned in the article Vermeer wrote, “I don’t like changing out those teeth!” Again, I have absolutely no complaints about this tuff Vermeer baler, and don’t see myself switching back to another brand of baler,’’ said Wofford. In addition to commenting on the baler’s performance, Wofford added that the staff at Great Plains Ada is easy to work with and are always working for his needs. “Mike Summers and Gary Huffstutlar are great to work with. Mike always knows what I’m talking about and what I need. Gary knows equipment. They are good guys I can trust to take care of my equipment needs.”

The all new Kubota BX80 Series

Kubota’s easiest to use sub-compact tractor yet BX1880/BX2380/BX2680/BX23S Kubota is the original number one selling sub-compact tractor ubota pioneered the sub-compact tractor market in 2000 with the introduction of the first BX Series Tractor. Since then, Kubota has remained the number one selling sub-compact tractor brand on the market for more than a decade! They invented the sub-compact diesel tractor so that even novices can comfortably and efficiently perform a variety of gardening, landscaping, and general property maintenance tasks. They lead this segment because of their subcompact tractor innovation, and now with the introduction of the new BX80 series, Kubota has taken their designs even further. With features like a redesigned operator’s station, Kubota Swift-Tach Loader, Kubota Swift-Connect Backhoe, a new four point front hitch, and of course a Kubota performance-matched diesel engine and transmission, it is easy to see why Kubota is leading the competition! The right sized tractor makes all the difference. Customers looking for a machine more versatile than a lawn tractor, but smaller than a compact tractor can benefit from the impressive power and maneuverability of the new BX series. Essentially the Kubota BX Series is the definition of a subcompact tractor. With a smaller sub-compact tractor you can perform nearly any job in your yard or on your acreage. Not only do these tractors provide more comfort while driving, they’re also easily driven around landscaping, fences and buildings. It’s also easier to store when not in use. Improved Operator Comfort Attaching and detaching the front loader couldn’t be easier! The new Kubota Swift-Tach Front Loader allows operators to quickly and easily remove the front loader without getting off the tractor. The BX23S which replaces the BX25

K

backhoe model comes equipped with Kubota’s Swift-Connect Backhoe for a variety of digging jobs around the house and yard. Smaller than a full-size tractor and easier to operate, the sub-compact BX80 Series has the power and versatility to take on the toughest gardening, landscaping, and property maintenance jobs. A fuel-efficient 3-cylinder Kubota diesel engine provides plenty of power to haul, climb, and pull through even the most challenging tasks. The new optional 2-lever quick coupler on the loader, combined with Land Pride’s 3-point quick hitch system, allows the hook up to more front and rear implements, letting you handle a wider range of jobs. The BX Series even makes maintenance easier with a hood that fully opens to provide quick access to all serviceable areas of the engine. BX23S It may be compact, but the BX23S’s backhoe offers jumbo size convenience and performance. It features a spacious, comfortable operator station with ample legroom, as well as a curved boom, 20° angle of departure, hydraulic hose protection, wide sight lines, and the Kubota Swift-Connect mounting system for quick and simple attachmeant/detachment of the backhoe. It’s the ideal combination of convenience and performance for all your digging jobs. A simple lever operation is all it takes to quickly detach the backhoe, letting you

PLANT I.D.

SOIL HEALTH

- LEARNING WITH THE BRAND -

O n August first, attendees of a Pontotoc County Soil

Health Field Day learned steps for assessing and improving soil health in cropland and pasture land. The two part work shop was hosted by the Pontotoc County Conservation District and Great Plains Kubota. Other contributors included the NRCS, The Pontotoc County OSU Extension Office, and the USDA. It was held at the Sunrise Ranch and took place in various different fields around the area. In addition participants of this workshop learned about native plant identification. The components of soil health are about much more than just dirt. Plants and livestock are an integral part of soils ecosystem. There are five principals to creating better soil: 1. Keep Soil Covered 2. Always Have a Living Root 3. Have A Diverse Plant Community 4. Manage Disturbance 5. Use Livestock Wisely Greg Scott of the NRCS presented the soil health section of the work shop which primarily focused on erosion control, improving infiltration, effects of tem-

perate, increasing moisture, and the benefits of cover crops. Additionally, two “Haney - Soil Health Analysis” reports were taken from two different fields for comparison. One was from crop land and the other from pasture land. This report gave attendees a visual reference on how using available resources such as the Oklahoma Conservation Commission can use applied science to improve their soil. Blane Stacy was the presenter for the plant identification for soil health section, which focused on basic plant anatomy, grassland soil health, and comparing soil health in cropland and grasslands. The reasoning behind plant identification was essentially to teach how plant diversity and identification can maximize the natural resources on one’s property. After decades of what we believed to best practices, farmers and ranchers are starting to understand that creating better soil is a process that, with implemented practices, over time can naturally reduce cost and increase profits. It’s field days like this, along with the knowledge provided by agencies therein, that help local families obtain the skills needed to strengthen their operations.

- GREAT PLAINS KUBOTA AT THE 65TH ANNUAL OCA CONVENTION & TRADE SHOW -

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, July 24, 2017 – Chance Voth from Fairview, Okla. was the lucky winner of a year-long lease on a Kubota M5111 Tractor during the 65th Annual Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) Convention and Trade Show. “Great Plains Kubota donated the year-long tractor lease as a way help grow OCA membership,” said Weston Givens, OCA President. “We are grateful for the partnership we have with Great Plains Kubota Winner: Tractor lease recipient, Chance Voth From Fairview, Okla. stands next to and truly appreciate their committhe Kubota M5-111 he will use for the next year courtesy of Great Plains Kubota. ment to support the OCA.” Photo Submitted By:OCA Each new OCA member and everyone that recruited a new OCA member was entered in the drawing for the Kubota tractor lease. “I think the real question isn’t why would we partner with OCA, but rather, why wouldn’t we partner with the OCA,” said Bill Clark, President of Great Plains Kubota. “As Kubota continues to expand its equipment line into the larger Ag market, I feel it’s our duty as a Kubota dealership to represent Kubota equipment to the right customer, and OCA members are these customers. Most of them, like us, depend on equipment to manage their cattle operations, and while we’re excited for the opportunity to earn new business, our main purpose of supporting the OCA is to help establish a solid future for the beef industry in Oklahoma.” The drawing took place July 22 during the awards banquet, the final event of the OCA convention and trade show. OCA Convention is an annual event where several hundred cattle ranching families from around the state come together to create policy, listen to informative speakers, celebrate industry accomplishments and recognize individuals and groups, like the Kiowa and Major County Cattlemen, who contribute to the success of the Oklahoma Beef Industry. OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, July 24, 2017 – Samantha Howe of Sulphur, Okla. was awarded a $1,000 scholarship during the recent Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) Convention and Trade Show. The scholarship was funded by Great Plains Kubota and administered by the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Foundation (OCF), a charitable arm of the OCA. Howe is a Junior at Oklahoma State University pursuing a degree in Animal Science. She is the fourth generation to work on her family’s ranch and seems to have a true passion for the beef industry. “I have grown up helping feed, doctor and care for our cattle,” Howe said. “I am an advocate for the cattle community and use daily opportunities to educate my peers on the health benefits of eating beef.” Howe maintains a high GPA while taking part in a lengthy list of leadership activities and community involvement. She is a member of the Chi Omega Women’s Fraternity; OSU President’s Leadership Council and has received several other honors throughout high school and college. “It’s truly an honor to present young people, like Samantha, who have deep, long standing ties to agriculture with scholarships to assist in furthering their education,” said Jeff Jaronek, OCF Coordinator. “Working with partners like Great Plains Kubota to help fund schol arships allows us to provide additional opportunities to young individuals who have strong roots in the cattle business that we otherwise might not be able to.”
