I love the saying, “If you teach your child to hunt you’ll never have to hunt your child.” As a father with two young daughters I can only pray this holds true as they get older. Regardless of the saying’s validity I have to say my time in the woods is more enjoyable now that my oldest daughter hunts with me. What started out as frustration, and little success has now turned into memories of a lifetime. Here are a few tips I’ve found for creating a successful young hunter.

Take them hunting at a very early age. The earlier you start taking a child hunting, the sooner they’ll become your hunting buddy. Like any investment it takes time to see a return, so be patient.

Make sure you start out with the basics. Whether learned on your own, or taught by someone else, hunting values and ethics must be taught from the beginning. Teaching your child to respect nature and all the aspects of hunter safety will create the foundations for success.

Be prepared, and be safe. Long hunting hours can try even a seasoned hunter’s patience, so come prepared, and bring something to keep the child occupied.

I’ve found that hunting in ground blinds is the best 4

way to start a child hunting. They conceal unwanted movement, provide protection from the elements, and are much safer than elevated stands or blinds.

Lower your expectations. Hunting with children should be enjoyable, but don’t expect to bring home a wall hanger. The first few years may seem discouraging, but the time spent early on will pay off later.

Reward yourself by setting aside hunts without your child. In addition to giving yourself a break, this will keep your child from burning out on hunting.

Let them shoot. Once your child is old enough to physically carry and shoot a weapon try to expose them to areas rich in wildlife. Practice shooting often so they’ll become comfortable and familiar with their weapon, and when a deer of a lifetime presents a shot always let them shoot!

Preconditioning adds value to fall calf sales

ow-calf producers with calves to market in the fall of 2014 are going to have some interesting decisions to make. With calf market prices at all-time highs and feed prices lower than the past three years, are the calves going to be sold at weaning or are they going to be kept until a later date to make additional income?

It is crucial to determine what is best for the calves and what is best for the operation financially. There are several decisions to be made when working through this process.

The first decision is whether to market at weaning or keep the calves longer. If the calves are sold at weaning, income is available immediately and no more labor is needed to take care of the calves. If the labor and facilities are available to wean and precondition calves, assuming the calves have good to superior genetics, additional profits are available in most cases by keeping the calves after weaning.

When selling calves at weaning, the shrink on weaned calves can be significant, often ranging from 4 to 12 percent, depending on the sale and weather conditions. These

same calves are discounted from $10 to $12 per hundredweight because they have not been through the weaning process.

Compare this to a +2 percent to -2 percent sale shrink at the end of a 45- to 60-day preconditioning period with no price discount for being a calf. In addition to the lost weight and lower price at weaning, the calves have an opportunity to have a daily gain of 2 to 3 pounds and typically sell at a higher price at the end of a typical 45- to 60-day weaning period in the fall. Considering these factors, the market value of the preconditioned calf is significantly higher.

To optimize the margins through this preconditioning process, it is crucial to keep the cost of gain as low as possible, preferably in the 80- to 90-cents-per-pound range or lower. This level of cost of gain can be achieved by planning ahead for feed, veterinary supplies, and hay or grazing.

By marketing calves at the end of the 45-day preconditioning period, consistently positive margins are achievable, and the margin can be significant in some years. For example, Noble Foundation producers in the Integrity Beef Alliance netted an additional $142 per calf during the 2013 preconditioning period.

In addition to the marketing opportunities at the end of a preconditioning period, these same calves will continue to perform through a wheat pasture or post preconditioning feeding program. With value of gain ranging from 85 cents per pound to $1.05 per pound, there are opportunities for increased profits the longer the calves are held. M

anaging land to promote soil health is an easy, yet effective way landowners can increase productivity and profitability. Producers who strive for healthier soil could benefit from fewer inputs, sustainable outputs, and increased resiliency. The bottom line is, healthy soils benefit all producers.

Healthier soil ultimately leads to increased production, profits, and resource protection. When organic matter increases and organisms flourish, soil health improves, thereby increasing production. One way to increase profits through healthy soil is to reduce tillage. Reducing or eliminating tillage means fewer passes by equipment over fields. Not only does this process conserve fuel consumption, but it also enables the soil to rely less on fertilizers and pesticides. Healthy soils hold more water for plant usage. Soil’s with higher levels of water retention reduce the amount of runoff that cause flooding, and increases the availability of water for plants to grow during drought stages. By holding more water, nutrients, and pesticides, healthy soils reduce nutrient and pesticide losses to water sources. Groundwater is also protected because there can be less leaching from healthy soils.

Soil is made up of air, water, decayed plant residue, organic matter from both living and dead organisms, and mineral matter, such as sand, silt, and clay. Increasing soil organic matter typically improves soil health since organic matter affects soil functions like nutrient cycling and water retention. Four practices the Natural Resources Conservation Service, or NRCS suggests to improve soil health are: 1. Disturb the soil as little as possible, because the soil’s natural biological cycles and structure can be disrupted.

2. Grow many different species of plants through rotations and a diverse mixture of cover crops because diversity above ground improves diversity below ground.

3. Plant cover crops around the harvest to keep living roots growing in the soil for as much of the year as possible.

4. Keep the soil surface covered with the residue year round.

t’s hard to imagine a time when big game hunters didn’t use ATVs or utility vehicles (UTVs). The classic images of western hunters packing in with horses and mules are now kept by only a nostalgic few.

Of course there are plenty of hunters today who don’t use off-road vehicles. However, all hunters from those who stalk big game to ones who hunt upland birds, could benefit from using an ATV or UTV. From the first snow machines to the modern day side-by-side, the extreme demands of avid hunters have influenced the evolution of these vehicles. Mirroring this evolution, off-road vehicles themselves have changed the sport of hunting. History proves there’s no turning back from these advanced machines, and the farthest frontiers are only as far as a few extra gas cans.

Two main factors have increased hunters usage of off-road vehicles during the past few decades. Hunting popularity has increased, and innovations of hunting products and tactics have been introduced.

When something is popular everyone wants to do it. For hunters this means traveling farther to find that perfect secluded hunting spot. Whether it’s hunting farther from base camp, or scouting a potential hunting lease, off-road vehicles allow hunters to quickly

expand their range. Realistically, there’s only so far a hunter can venture on foot, but with off-road vehicles remote hunting locations can be reached sooner, hunted longer, and daylight is no longer an issue. With increased popularity comes more hunting pressure, especially to public access areas. Once secluded destinations have become hunting hotspots, forcing hunters to spread out to find their piece of paradise.

Perhaps just as important to the evolution of these machines is the use of hunting tactics that require vehicles with hauling capabilities. Deer feeders and tree stands, for example, are popular among whitetail hunters. Scouting and staging multiple feeder-stand locations can be a one man job when using a UTV. UTVs easily haul multiple passengers and cargo through a variety of terrain, making them ideal for hunting clubs and lease partners. On the other end of the hunting spectrum UTVs are ideal for setting up remote hunting camps. There’s so much time devoted to creating or escaping to a hunting paradise that off-road vehicles have become a necessity.

“We use our ATVs and UTVs to check cameras, which is a great way to scout for a busy guy like me.

There’s no way I could check five cameras after work if I was on foot. I also use them to drop off family and friends at different hunting spots on my property.

They’re more fuel efficient than larger vehicles so I can haul kids, recover deer, and scout without breaking the bank or my back. I wouldn’t be able to hunt the way I do without these machines,” said Elliott.

Planting food plots is another increasing tactic hunters use to attract deer. Hunters on a budget can easily plant supplemental food anywhere on their property with an off-road vehicle paired with an all-inone tow behind implement.

The dedicated woodsman who treks solo after big game knows the importance of a maneuverable offroad vehicle, such as an ATV. When it comes to packing out game, a well-equipped ATV or UTV is simply the superior method. Off-road vehicles used in hunting have also created conflicts among the hunting community. Hunting and shooting from these machines isn’t fair chase, and reflects poorly on the sport. Laws set in place are designed to protect both the environment and the future of using ATVs and UTVs for hunting.

So, which off-road vehicle is better? Choosing between ATVs or UTVs comes down to preference, price, and capabilities. Typically ATV’s are less expensive. They are faster and narrower than UTV’s, making them capable of going places UTVs can’t. However UTV’s make up for this with their torque and towing capabilities. With more storage capacity and passenger options utility vehicles offer hunters versatility ATVs don’t have. Despite there small differences off-road vehicles were both designed to get hunters to and from extreme destinations.

For some, hunting is about creating a private paradise. For others, it’s about escaping to far away destinations. Whatever’s desired, off-road vehicles can be a hunter’s companion, pack mule, or rescue team.

They’re invaluable when setting up remote camps, scouting property, planting food plots, or reaching extreme destinations. They make all the wants and needs of the modern day hunter possible, and will continue to evolve with the sport.

Unexpected Necessity Submitted By Vermeer Published In the Summer 2014 issue of making Hay

I

f anyone were to have asked him last fall, J. Mack Bohn would have admitted that his reasons for purchasing a new Vermeer BPX9000 bale processor where to help reduce bale waste and get the tax credit before the end of 2013.

“It was a legitimate investment at the time,” he insisted. But when neighbors ask him now why he bought the BPX9000, he says, “It’s for reasons I didn’t know about at the time.”

As the owner of Diamond JK Ranches, based near Cyril, Oklahoma, Bohn is like most other cattlemen in that he traditionally has to provide the herd with hay during the winter months. However, five years into one of the region’s worst droughts, Bohn, is buying hay on a regular basis and providing supplemental feed through much of the year to supplement his pasture forage.

It’s not like Bohn can reduce the size of his herd in response to the drought, either. Following years of genetic and DNA testing, embryo transplants and selective breeding, Bohn has developed a highly reputable breeding stock program. While much of his program revolves around a purebred Brangus herd, his most recent accomplishment has been the development of his own line of UltraBlack bulls and cows. UltraBlack animals are 3/16th Brahman and 13/16th Angus.

Although Bohn sells both bulls and cows to a number of his long-term clients, he also provides breeding 18

stock to three other ranches in northwest Oklahoma, Kentucky and Texas.

“If I was just raising commercial cattle, I’d be bored to death,” said Bohn. “I have to have a mission and I’m always trying to stay out in front,” he added. “I had a friend once tell me, ‘If you don’t get out in front of the pack, the view never changes.’”

Consequently, Bohn isn’t afraid to try something new or to be the pioneer. That was indeed the case with his purchase of the Vermeer BPX9000 bale processor. Bohn’s was not only the first Vermeer processor in the area, but he ordered it with all the options, including the optional scales and the ability to process square bales in case that becomes necessary.

“A lot of people look at the scales as an unnecessary luxury,” he said. “I’ll admit, we got pretty good at estimating how much the cows would eat in a day and rolling out the right amount. But I don’t think anybody can look at a round bale and tell you within 200 pounds what it will weigh. With the scales, we can put out exactly 35 pounds per cow, and if they don’t clean it all up, we can cut it back a few pounds per day. After using it, I wouldn’t buy a bale processor without it.”

While Bohn admits the latest bale processor from Vermeer does reduce bale waste by shredding and mixing hay into more palatable windrows, he says he has since learned that it does so much more.

that can unroll round bales, so that in itself offers a savings over round bale feeders,” he explained.

“However, the width still creates an environment that’s comfortable for cows and calves to bed down on, and that just creates a breeding ground for bacteria,” he added, noting that he would still feed in a different area each day.

“We have spring calves and fall calves, which means the fall calves are going to be with their mommas through the entire winter when we’re feeding on the ground.”

However, once the hay is processed with the BPX9000, it is placed in a windrow that is too narrow for any cow to comfortably lie down on. That leads to a cleaner environment and less illness. Better yet, Bohn said the windrows are deposited on the ground with such force that they don’t move.

“Down here, the wind is always blowing,” he said.

“So it wasn’t unusual for a 40-mile-per-hour wind to pick up the edge of hay we’d unrolled and scatter $70 worth of Bermuda across the pasture. So we’re saving hay there, too.”

One of the things that has surprised him the most, however, is how clean and palatable the hay is after going through the processor. Bohn said it starts by setting the unit so it removes any twine or netwrap from the bales.

“I don’t like my cows eating plastic, even though I equally hate the job of cutting netwrap off of the bales,” he insisted. “This BPX9000 cleans the bales so well that you can hardly find a scrap of netwrap in the windrow. Sure, you have to cut off the rotor every two or three days, but that’s only about a 15-minute process.”

“In the meantime, you wouldn’t believe how much dirt there is in a bale,” he continued. “The guy I buy my hay from is one of the best in the business, yet the dust is so thick at times you can barely see the processor. That’s dirt the cows aren’t eating.”

An even more valuable benefit, he added is the fact that the calves start eating hay just as soon as their rumen develops, simply because it has been processed into a more palatable form. That means both cows and greatplainskubota.com

“The BPX9000 won’t perform miracles and turn bad hay into good hay,” Bohn related. “No bale processor can do that. But it will make good hay into better hay.”

“I’m certainly not one to hold back an opinion about something, which sometimes rubs people the wrong way,” he admitted. “But it’s hard to find anything to complain about with this machine. It’s gone from being a tax deduction and somewhat of a luxury to an essential piece of equipment.”

10 Pieces of Equipment Every Plotter Should Know About

unters who plant food plots, or “plotters” know that time is always a critical factor. The early days of bow season tend to spring from the summer with such surprise it barely gives the unprepared plotter time to break ground. Any average hunter would say that finding time to go hunting, let alone put in a food plot, is always an issue. Fortunately for plotters there is equipment to ease this burden. In the paragraphs that follow ten pieces of equipment will be examined for their ability to save plotters time and money.

At some point every plotter wants more power for plotting. More power means bigger implements, and more plotting in less time. Utility vehicles or ATVs are ideal for small or remote food plots, but ultimately, to save time and money a plotter must power up to a utility tractor.

Whether you are a full-time hunter or selective season shooter time dictates every step of pre-season preparations. The luxury of waiting for perfect weather and ground conditions to plant doesn’t exist for most plotters.

Instead, plotting realistically takes place when time allows, but with a Kubota tractor matched with the right implements, creating food plots can be done quickly.

ROTARY CUTTERS Rotary cutters are the must have implement to manage any type of property. Likewise they’re THE tool needed to maintain existing plots, or start new ones. Because rotary cutters come in many sizes their specific tasks will vary. With extreme duty cutters clearing smaller trees isn’t a problem, where cutting grass and brush would be the 22

extent for smaller cutters. Cutting the previous seasons leftover crops to later till in the soil is another great use of cutters. SPRAYERS Sprayers are inexpensive tools that save plotters time.

From controlling fire to killing weeds, the sprayers effectiveness is invaluable in keeping a plot under control. The plotter who knows year round maintenance saves time will always have a sprayer at the ready. For smaller plots in hard to reach areas ATV sprayers when used with chainsaws become the remote plotters rotary cutter.

Effective food plot sites should be located near and around cover. This means creating new sites, especially larger ones, will most likely consist of lots of tree removal.

For this case, chainsaws would be too labor intensive and time consuming. Instead, a skid steer or tractor mounted tree saw, or shears would be more practical. Tree saws are quick and effective at removing hundreds of trees an hour.

The powerful blade of the Marshall Tree Saw isn’t affected by mud or rocks, and more importantly it leaves little to no damage to the land. The Turbo Saw offers the same effect, but uses a high speed circular cutting disc which can cut at speeds of up to ten inches per second. Tree shears act like large scissors. In one cut the M&M Hydra-Clip will cut 16 inch trees flush to the ground. When used, tree saws and shears make tree removal safer, faster, and more effective.

TILLERS If the soil and ground condition are in decent shape plotters should use a tiller. Tillers work really well in existing plots, and for creating fine seedbeds for planting smaller seeds. Tillers aren’t limited to soft dirt though.

Some tillers like the Land Pride RTR20 will tackle tougher ground than other tiller models. These rotary tillers are perfect for food plot maintenance and prep. Available in 64 and 72 inch widths, the RTR20 turns up hard packed ground, leaving a perfect seedbed needed to effectively attract whitetails . The reverse tilling action makes these tillers ideal for tough ground conditions. The reverse action “sucks” the tiller into the ground, which prohibits the tiller from “walking” on hard ground. It also incorporates spring loaded “sifting” rods behind the tines to help bury large rocks and debris. The reverse action also brings the dirt to the top while rocks and vegetation get buried. With a heavy duty tiller like the RTR20 plotters can by pass the use of a disc, making this implement more essential to have.

DISC HARROWS A disc is essential for breaking new ground, incorporating old crop residue, and prepping the ground before planting. Discs work well for breaking hard ground, and can be used without the use of a tiller. However, when used alone several passes must be made before seeding, making the disc less effective. greatplainskubota.com

With all implements there are huge differences in quality and performance. Land Pride’s DH25 and 35 series of disc harrows prove that not all implements are created equal. They’re built with heavy tubular frames, not angle iron, and feature self aligning, sealed ball bearings that are supported by think hangers to resist high torque. With 20 or 22 inch notched disc blades and large gang axles these Land Pride models will resist high loads in the hardest of ground. The DH25 and 35 series will perform well on a variety of tractors ranging from 40 to 100 horsepower, giving plotters the versatility needed to save time during any tillage job.

SEED BED ROLLERS Plotters looking to maximize their results should use the simple, yet effective, seed bed roller. Without proper seed to soil contact, invested time is wasted. Sure, there are other ways to achieve seed to soil contact, but because food plots aren’t your typical seeding environment plotters should take advantage of bed rollers to insure a successful plot.

Land Pride’s SBR72 not only creates good contact, but it breaks up smaller dirt clods and clumps which greatly improves germination rates. The notched rollers actually form tiny furrows that will retain moisture and hold the seed in place. This seed bed roller can also serve as the roller attachment for Land Pride’s Seeder System. This system is designed for existing sites and includes: a disc harrow, spreader, roller, and drag, which provide plotters the one pass application needed to speed up planting.

SPREADERS The broadcast spreader is an effective tool for dispersing both seed and fertilizer. Pull type models attach to both tractors and utility vehicles, and are inexpensive to a plotters budget. However, spreaders aren’t the most accurate method for seed dispersal, and will waste a percentage of the expensive seeds plotters use. With that said, they are still a necessity, and even plotters who use precision seeders or no till drills could benefit from having a trusty broadcast seeder on hand.

instance hunters who manage numerous plots of considerable size would increase their food plot production by using a Woods Precision Super Seeder. This efficient implement provides one pass planting, saving both time and fuel. With three seed box options plotters can conveniently plant multiple seed types at different depths. The heavy frames of the Woods PSS seeders stay engaged to the ground ensuring accurate control of seed depth. Another time saving feature is that the seed boxes. They can be engaged and disengaged by removing a single lynch pin, which allows plotters to plant exactly what they want, where they want it.

GREAT PLAINS 1006NT COMPACT DRILL For the professional plotter the Great Plains Manufacturing line of no-till drills can’t be beat! The Great Plains ten foot, end wheel, no-till drill (1006NT) is the perfect combination between the productivity of a large drill and the versatility of a compact one. This machine is designed for the biggest of food plots, and has long been used by conservation groups like Pheasants Forever chapters.

The 1006NT Drill features large end wheels designed for unmatched ground gauging in rugged terrain. In addition, the inline end wheels minimize side loading on contours and side-hills, dramatically extending the life of the no-till openers. Other features include 4-speed gearboxes, an automatic clutch that disengages when the drill is lifted, and rain-tight lids for maximum seed and fertilizer protection.

With drills like the 1006NT plotters will be so productive they’ll be looking for new ground to plot.

LAND PRIDE’S FOOD PLOT SEEDER For the plotter who uses utility vehicles or an ATV to power in his plants, the Food Plot Seeder by Land Pride is the ultimate time saver. It’s a highly versatile full component package designed to open and break up soil surfaces

by discing the soil for seedbed or planting preparation. It will then spread the seeds while simultaneously pressing the seeds into full soil contact with a trailing fluted roller.

The combination of maximum versatility and narrow transport width makes the FPS an excellent choice for far away food plots and plotters with smaller budgets.

LUXURY OR NECESSITY Keeping in mind that planting food plots is somewhat of a luxury in itself, and that one man’s luxury is another man’s necessity, there are two types of equipment to plot with. There’s equipment that simply gets the job done, and there’s equipment that gets the job done and then some.

No till drills and precision seeders are perfect for creating larger food plots in a short amount of time. They combine all essential equipment into one implement making it highly versatile, but not necessarily essential. Likewise tree saws/shears are extremely effective for tree removal when creating a new site, but a chainsaw will do the job too.

Sprayers as well aren’t 100% necessary; however they are effective at maintaining a plot throughout the year. An old rotary cutter, disc or tiller, and some sort of spreader are the basics for creating a food plot with a tractor. For those who use ATVs, an all purpose pull behind seeder is both essential and luxurious for creating smaller plots.

Planting food plots can be a successful way to harvest deer. They provide an opportunity for hunters to see large amounts of deer while offering the deer themselves added nutritional supplements. In many ways food plots are simply pleasing to the eye. The vibrant green is an extreme contrast to the burnt orange of October’s rust. When thinking of plotting against the hardy Whitetail, think of the tools needed to create the most productive, yet time efficient food plot. This will allow more time spent scouting and understanding the deer herd, as opposed to changing out implements.

Food plots should be done as a supplemental source of food, never as a primary means to sustain a herd of deer. Forage food is a must for whitetails, but so is water, cover, and ample amount of territory. Start with selecting a site that includes all these elements, and arrange a plot that is close to cover. If possible shape the plot to be narrow, this will allow cover to be closer on all sides. It’s never a bad idea to perform a soil test to determine how much fertilizer should be applied.

shton Huffstutlar wasn’t interested in playing school sports, but her parents, Gary and Monica insisted she do some sort of extra curricular activity. When her father, Gary, a salesman at Great Plains Ada asked what she thought about shooting sport clays Ashton was hesitant, but willing to give it a try. Little did the two of them know that a simple after school activity would inspire Ashton to shoot her way to college.

Breaking a few hand thrown clays sparked a serious interest in Ashton, and the need for her own gun became prevalent. Then Gary met John Stafford, a Great Plains Ada customer, who shot in shotgun competitions.

Stafford sold them a Beretta 12 gauge, but had much bigger plans for the young shooter. For the last three years Stafford has coached, and taken Ashton to shooting events in several states. With his help and support she’s shot over 26,000 registered targets in sporting clays, trap and skeet.

“My goal is to better my shooting sport abilities to get a college scholarship. Thanks to my parents, and John this is an obtainable goal. Since I’ve started, I’ve placed in numerous competitions with my Krieghoff K80 ProSporter. It takes practice to be good at anything. Currently I’m preparing for Nationals that will take place in October, where I hope to win Ladies Champion,” said Ashton.

Now a Junior at Allen High School, Ashton continues her scholarship pursuit. Take Pride In Your Work

he cowboy was known for taking pride in his work. I’ve known very few real cowboys that actually made their living everyday on horseback.

One cowboy in particular I knew growing up would recall his days working on a large ranch near Canadian, TX. He would talk about the pride they took in being able to catch their horses, gather their tack out of the tack room, and then saddle their horses in total darkness. Not only did it take a well trained horse to do this, but his tack had to be maintained and placed in its proper area every time. The cowboy took pride in his rig, his horsemanship, and how he cared for the cattle he was entrusted with.

The second code in our Code of the West series couldn’t have come at a better time to discuss for us here at Great Plains Kubota. It seems that we’ve had several conversations around the dealerships lately about “taking pride in our work.” We’ve been blessed over the past few months with a record amount of business. As thankful as we are to see our business nearly double from last summer, we’ve been challenged to provide the level of service we promise. I’m as guilty as anyone, but when there aren’t enough hours in the day, we tend to get in a hurry, resulting in rushed work.

When we rush through our work, mistakes are inevitably made, giving the appearance that we don’t take pride in our work.

Now, I can assure you that GP employees honestly care about their work, but I’ll admit we’ve made more than our share of mistakes as of late, primarily because we couldn’t seem to catch up this summer. Because we do have pride, we always strive to make the situation right when we fall short. In fact, our recent shop talk has prompted us to come up with a new service guarantee. All GP employees know that we are going to correct our mistakes, but sometimes our customers do not. Our new service guarantee, “IF IT’S NOT RIGHT, IT’S ON US,” is GP’s way of communicating to customers that we take pride in our work, but we are only human, and we make mistakes. When we make mistakes, we’d like the opportunity to correct them, because we genuinely care about the services and products we provide. We have, and will continue to do everything we can to make it right in the event we disappoint a customer. greatplainskubota.com

When I was a child, much of my motivation for taking pride in my work came from the fear of disappointing my parents. Likewise, at Great Plains Kubota we don’t want to disappoint our customers, but there is a much greater reason than fear that should motivate this pride. As a Christian I try to do everything in such a way that I don’t disappoint my Heavenly Father.

Colossians 3:23-24 says: 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Even though most cowboys probably couldn’t quote Colossians 3:23 they knew there was a fundamental principle guiding their actions. Many times they worked for long periods of time on the open range with no human supervision which leads me to believe that somehow deep down, they knew that they were ultimately working for a higher authority. “Take pride in your work,” not because you fear disappointing your fellow man, but because whether we want to admit it or not, we are all working for a higher authority, and someday there will be an accounting for all our actions - even our work.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS & A BETTER HERD partnering with land owners to improve deer herds is just the beginning

hen neighbors Garrett Clark and Chuck Roberts decided to improve their deer herd near Fitzhugh, Okla. they couldn’t have foreseen the impact a common interest would have in building strong neighborly relationships and better hunting opportunities.

The Limestone Game and Range Management Association consists of 25 land owners working with the Noble Foundation and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife to improve deer herd balance and health over a combined 13,000 acres. Associations such as this are rare in both existence, and how they operate. This group has taken a step back from social media posts to use face to face communications, and hands on learning to achieve their goals, which, have now become a side note in comparison to the profound connections made among the neighbors involved.

Misunderstandings between neighbors have led to many a conflict, but when Garrett and Chuck figured out they were both shooting each others bucks they decided to benefit from this new found knowledge. They called upon the Noble Foundation, and set up a meeting with Russell Stephens to form a plan which eventually guided them and their neighbors to where they are today.

Garrett has seen many benefits to this program since it’s inception. Not only does he get great enjoyment managing a quality deer herd, he feels this association is improving the land and it’s value as well. Garrett noted these aspects about the program and the association he helped create.

“We’ve already noticed a difference in herd quality in some areas. I can honestly say my hunting land wouldn’t be as productive without this program, or the cooperation of the land owners, and the knowledge of the aiding organizations. Sharing trail camera pictures and other information is really just the starting point. Without the shared idea of a healthy, balanced herd our individual acreages wouldn’t be as collectively productive. The only other way to achieve something like this would be to fence the deer off with “high fence”, but that isn’t hunting in my book,” said Garrett.

Without the complete control of a “high fence” neighborly cooperation seemed to be the only option to manage a balanced deer heard that would produce a closer buck to doe ratio and larger, more mature bucks. What everyone in this association found out that fewer does meant increased herd health. By harvesting more does, and shooting fewer bucks, the given amount of nutrients would be distributed equally. Chuck commented on this aspect.

“I have not always been a management hunter. I’ve tried for several years to harvest mature bucks, but this didn’t always happened because of elements that were out of my control, and honestly harvesting does wasn’t a consideration of mine until recently,” Chuck said.

Chuck Roberts has seen the improvements of this program on his family farm, but admits the most beneficial part has had nothing to do with deer at all.

“I’m most happy with the increased communication among my neighbors. Deer hunting was just a catalyst for this cooperation. After we fined tuned our deer management ideas, and were all on the 32

same page, everyone began to benefit both on the farm and socially,” explained Chuck.

Of course the main focus of this association was to increase health and buck to doe ratios, but this all hinged on the cooperation between neighbors.

The level of success relies not only on cooperation, but of the expertise of outside agencies such as the Noble Foundation and the wildlife department.

The DMAP program, or Deer Management Assistance Program allows these hunters to harvest anterless deer any day during the archery, muzzle loader, and gun seasons with special DMAP permits. In cooperation, members of the Limestone Game and Range Management Association collect detailed biological information on their harvests. Department biologists then analyze this data to provide further management recommendations. Spotlight surveys are the groups primary means of counting deer, and through this hard work they’ve determined the percentage of bucks that they should harvest. This is really the key factor to the whole program. By setting a cap on the amount of bucks harvested, which has been less than 20% of their entire deer population, the association has improved there buck ratio. Garrett committed on this process.

“It doesn’t really matter the age of the bucks harvested. They can be spikes or extremely mature bucks. What really matters is the number taken. This is where the cooperation and complete involvement of all the neighbors pays off.

Within a few years we should see a real difference,” Clark said.

The neighbors of the Limestone Game and Range Management Association have become closer friends and better neighbors. With a common goal and lots of cooperation they’ve built equal hunting opportunities and a healthier herd.

JEFF DANKER

GPL: How important was hunting during your childhood?

JD: Growing up, I worked for my Dad’s company, Danker Roofing.

We’d go hunting a lot, but the biggest thing in my life was roping. My dad would haul me to every rodeo in the country when I was a youngster. After graduating high school my life consisted of Rodeo, Hunting, and Roofing. I was content!

GPL: How did your hunting shows, Buckventures Outdoors and Major League Bowhunter start?

JD: While hunting big deer across the Midwest I hooked up with a guy that had a local TV show. After filming for him for a year I decided to start my own shown, and in 2003 Buckventures Outdoors (BVO) was born. The first three years were tough, but things took off after we got picked up

by Knight rifles, Summit treestands, and Knight & Hale calls. Then, Chipper Jones, Matt Duff, and I started Major League Bowhunter (MLB) in 2010. Both shows have become a platform in my life to spread Gods word.

GPL: How are the shows alike, and what makes them successful?

JD: They’re similar in that we’re all humble, hard working, and like to hunt our own ground. I believe people connect with us because they see us like they see themselves. Each week we look viewers in the eye and speak from our hearts, no cue cards or scripts. Everything is in God’s hands, and he paves the way. I feel this is what’s made both shows very successful.

GPL: What do you want your viewers to walk away with?

JD: We want our viewers to know that we make mistakes just like they do. We show our failures, and successes in hopes to truly educate the viewer.

GPL: Personally, what goals are you trying to achieve with BVO & MLB? JD: I think we can all make a difference in the short time we have on earth. I believe wholeheartedly that God has given greatplainskubota.com

this platform for me to use for Him. I travel in the off season speaking and delivering the Gospel. This is my most important job.

GPL: What role/roles do you play in the shows?

JD: I handle most of the business for both companies. I make sure things are always done right, and that we are always giving God the credit. I’m also a co-host on MLB, and show up from time to time on BVO. GPL: How long does it take to make one show?

JD: The edited version of the shows spits out 22 minuets of footage which typically requires two weeks of hard hunting.

GPL: How much of your business depends on sponsors?

JD: Sponsors are a huge part of our success, but we’ve never used a product we didn’t believe in.

GPL: How important are the Kubota RTVs in your daily work?

JD: The RTVs are huge for us, and get used everyday. We just finished dragging all off our plots with them. The belt driven utility vehicles we used before would always over heat doing this, but not the Kubotas! They are the workhorse of all utility vehicles, and that’s exactly what we need.

GPL: How do viewers see Brandon Adams?

BA: I’m the young handsome, somewhat goofy guy of the bunch.

GPL: What is your actual job with the shows?

BA: I’ve filmed Jeff since 2007, and done all video production of BVO and MLB since 2010.

GPL: How would you say the style/content message of MLB/ BVO differs from other shows?

BA: First our message is that it’s okay to put God in the forefront. Secondly, killing big bucks is an obtainable goal by anyone with a little effort.

GPL: What is the single most useful tool you have in the field?

BA: The Heater Body Suit may top this list. It allows us to stay longer in the brutally cold plains state’s wind.

GPL: From a production standpoint what is your greatest asset in producing a quality hunting show?

BA: It’s the great group of guys that make good ideas happen.

GPL: How would you describe the show?

BG: It’s a family friendly show that’s educational, and represents the average hunter.

GPL: You were a major league baseball player for thirteen plus years, and now you’re a full time hunter. If you could only do one of the two which would it be?

BG: Hunting, because I’ve always had a passion for hunting.

They are alike because they’re both challenging, but rewarding when you accomplish goals.

GPL: How has baseball and hunting impacted your life?

BG: I’d have to say last muzzle loader season in Kansas. I’d been hunting this buck hard, and finally killed him on the 13th day of the 14 day muzzle loader season.

DM: I co-host and hunt on BVO. I’m also the land manager for both BVO and MLB. I’m responsible for managing, working, and maintaining over 70,000 acres across the country.

GPL: What type of hunting did

After releasing the arrow it didn’t penetrate and the negative thoughts began to creep into my head. After a long sleepless night, and looking for the buck from daylight till dark I was asking myself what I could have done different. To this day I still think about this hunt.

GPL: What is your favorite aspect about being a part of BVO? BD: The closeness of everyone involved in BVO has made us a family.

GPL: Finally, if you had to choose to be on a horse, or in a Kubota RTV is the best when it comes to real work.
