Two Brands...One Standard: A variety of Kubota equipment is staged at the Sunrise Ranch in preparation for the days work. Typically, a days work for a Kubota on this ranch would vary in tasks and jobs, but for this day it was preparing for hay production and a Kubota photo shoot. Sunrise ranch is owned by Great Plains Kubota President, Bill Clark and like his Kubota dealerships the ranch is managed and operated by his family. Also like the Great Plains Kubota dealerships this ranch is founded on service and sets a high standard of production thereof. Instead of serving customers, the ranch serves it's livestock.

Court ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. They ruled, “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey are overruled; the authority to regulate abor tion is returned to the people and their elected repre sentatives.”Theright to life is also clearly protected in the Bible. The Bible tells us that God knows us individu ally even before He forms us in the womb. One of my favorite passages concerning unborn children is Luke 1:41. Mary’s cousin Elizabeth had become pregnant in her old age. While John was still within her womb, he already revealed his personality when he leapt for joy at the sound of Mary’s voice! The Bible has dozens and dozens of scriptures referencing the value of life before and after birth. Although abortion is not specifically mentioned in the Bible, it is clear that the practice is the killing of an innocent life.

But words can change and today, the way I see the word conservative mostly being used, it’s no laughing matter. In fact, I now want to be known as a Conser vative. The best definition I’ve found of a Conserva tive today is “someone who has a desire to preserve the political philosophy and rules of government articulated in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution along with the belief that it is imperative to preserve the traditional morality, as it is articulated in the Bible, through cultural norms”.

Please hear me here, I am not condemning anyone. Romans 3:23 says that all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God and my sins make me just as guilty as anyone else. I’m simply saying that the practice of abortion is not pleasing or acceptable to God. Never has been, never will be. Words can have different meanings and the definition of words can even change over time, but...

The U.S. Constitution is the highest law of our land and since the Constitution was founded upon Biblical standards (don’t believe me, check for yourself), it is difficult to separate the laws of our land from God’s standards for morality and decency. A person who tries to separate God’s standards from the laws of our land is who I would call a Liberal or the opposite of a Conservative.Forexample, Conservatives are against abortion in most cases while many liberals say it is thier right to choose whether to end the life of a baby.

God’s Word will never change. Anytime we deviate from His Word, we are headed the wrong direction.

The right to life is protected by our Constitution and was just confirmed with the recent Supreme

Words can change

I’m proud to be called Conservative today.

When I was growing up, if someone was described as being “conservative”, I understood that to be a polite way of saying that the person was tight or even cheap. Usually there would be a slight chuckle after hearing someone say, “he is very conservative”, as it was a little bit of an insult. Nowadays, when my wife thinks I’m being a little too conservative, she calls me an old tightwad, whatever that means!

- Studies have shown several benefits of fenceline weaning• Calves bawl and walk less for the first several days post weaning.

• Move the cows and leave calves in the same pasture or lot.  When this is done, calves already know location of water, feed and grazing areas.  If this is not possible, locate water troughs and feeders along the fenceline where calves and cows will initially congregate increas ing the likelihood calves will find water and feed early on in the process, thereby minimizing walking perim eter fences.

• Manage to get calves accustomed to a feed bunk and water trough as quickly as possible.  Creep feeding calves for a few weeks prior to weaning will ease the transition and get calves accustomed to concentrate feed.  Maintain access to good quality, clean water at all •times.Fence line wean if possible.  This eliminates stress by permitting calves to remain in the same pasture where they are familiar with feed, water, shade, etc.

• The feed ration is critical because feed intake is ini tially low after weaning.  It needs to be highly palatable, nutrient dense, dust free and include a complete vita min and mineral supplement.

By Dr. Mark Johnson

GPL Fall 2022 7

“Fencelinepen. weaning” a management process that al lows fenceline contact between calf and dam for at least four to ten days following weaning.  Fences need to be sturdy enough to permit nose to nose contact while preventing nursing.  The objective of fenceline wean ing is to allow social interaction between calf and dam while weaning the calves off of mother’s milk.

• Calves gain more weight in the first couple of weeks •post-weaning.Calvesthateat and drink more during the first days after weaning stay healthier.

- Best Practices for Successful Fenceline Weaning

• Fencing needs to be adequate.  A typical five-strand barbed wire fence will usually be satisfactory.  If calves are still able to nurse through the fence, adding a single strand of electric fence offset from the main fence, pos sibly on both sides should be adequate.

E

The Benefits of Early Weaning and Fence Line Weaning

• After calves are over the stress of weaning they should begin to consume approximately 3% of their body weight in high quality feed each day.  Feed intake varia tion or depressed appetite can indicate health problems. Fence Line Weaning - Regardless of when and how many calves you will wean, methods of reducing stress on fresh weaned calves is of great interest to cattlemen and of benefit to cow-calf operations.  Traditional meth ods of weaning calves typically involve total separation of calves from cows by moving calves to a new pasture or dry lot

• Lower the risk of health problems and promote calf growth by giving proper vaccinations prior to weaning.  Castrate and dehorn calves when giving pre-weaning vaccinations.  This will permit calves to deal with the stress of these management practices while still nursing.

Early weaning calves has the primary benefit of im proving cow condition for rebreeding, especially when forage is limited.  When the nutritional demands of lactation are removed by early weaning there is signifi cant reduction (15 – 20%) in the dietary energy needed by cows.  Early weaning can initiate postpartum estrus, improve pregnancy rates, lower culling rates and result in higher weaning weights and cow productivity in fol lowing years.   Early weaning is most beneficial in years when pasture production is inadequate to support herd nutritional requirements.  From the standpoint of range management, it reduces the risk of overgrazing and accordingly adds to the long-term health of the grazing system.Theaverage age of beef calves weaned in the United States is a little over 7 months of age.  Calves can be weaned as early as 60 days of age.  However this re quires intensive calf management and is not practi cal under most ranch conditions.  At two months of age calves are still functionally pre-ruminants relying primarily on milk and consuming a small amount of forage.  By 3 – 4 months of age the rumen becomes functional and calves are capable of consuming signifi cant amounts of forage.

arly Weaning - Long-term drought, May moisture, extreme heat and prevailing southern winds for the past several weeks have resulted in a drought.  Many Oklahoma cow-calf operations are facing the reality of a depleted forage base right now.  One potential solution is early weaning calves.

• Avoid adding unnecessary stress like castrating, de horning, branding or vaccinations at the time of wean ing by completing these processes several weeks prior to weaning, or after weaning is complete.

- Manage according the following -

• Calves spend more time resting and eating during the first several days post weaning.

Best Management Practices for Early Weaning - The first two weeks post weaning are a critical time for calves to overcome weaning stress, maintain health and become nutritionally independent by learning to consume feed.

Rotary cutters are the must have implement to manage any type of property. Likewise, they’re THE tool needed to maintain existing plots, or start new ones. Because rotary cutters come in many sizes their specific tasks will vary. With extreme duty cutters clearing smaller trees isn’t a problem, where cut ting grass and brush would be the extent for smaller cutters. Cutting the previous seasons leftover crops to later till in the soil is another great use of cutters. Creating trails in thick brush and making stand access locations, along with being a great maintenance tool is why the rotary cutter is by far the most valuable implement a plotter could have.

ROTARY CUTTERS

unters who plant food plots, or “plotters” know that time is always a critical factor. The early days of bow season tend to spring from the summer with such surprise it barely gives the unprepared plotter time to break ground. Average hunters would say that finding time to go hunting, let alone put in a food plot, is always an issue. Fortunately for plotters there is equipment to ease this burden. In the paragraphs that follow ten pieces of equipment will be examined for their ability to save plotters time.

At some point every plotter wants more power for planting. More power means bigger implements, and more plotting in less time. Utility vehicles or ATVs are ideal for small or remote food plots, but ultimately, to save time and money a plotter must power up to a utilityWhethertractor.you are a full-time hunter or selective season shooter time dictates every step of pre-season preparations. The luxury of waiting for perfect weather and ground conditions to plant doesn’t exist for most plotters. Instead, plotting realistically takes place when time allows, but with a Kubota tractor matched with the right implements, creating food plots can be done quickly.

There are many rotary cutter manufacturers on the market today but choose wisely because you get what you pay for. Purchasing a quality rotary cutter such as a Land Pride model saves money because cheaper cut ters won’t stand up to the rigorous cutting conditions of clearing new sites.

SPRAYERS

Sprayers are inexpensive tools that save plot ters time. From controlling fire to killing weeds, the sprayers effectiveness is invaluable in keeping a plot under control. The plotter who knows year-round maintenance saves time will always have a sprayer at the ready. For smaller plots in hard-to-reach areas ATV sprayers when used with chainsaws become the remote plotters rotary cutter.

One plotter’s needs are another plotter’s wants. For instance, hunters who manage numerous plots of con siderable size would increase their food plot production

If the soil and ground condition are in decent shape plotters should use a tiller. Tillers work really well in existing plots, and for creating fine seedbeds for plant ing smaller seeds. Tillers aren’t limited to soft dirt though. Some tillers like the Land Pride RTR series of will tackle tougher ground than other tiller models. These rotary tillers are perfect for food plot mainte nance and prep. Available in a variety of widths, the RTR20 turns up hard packed ground, leaving a perfect seedbed needed to effectively attract whitetails. The reverse tilling action makes these tillers ideal for tough ground conditions. The reverse action “sucks” the tiller into the ground, which prohibits the tiller from “walk ing” on hard ground. It also incorporates spring loaded “sifting” rods behind the tines to help bury large rocks and debris. The reverse action also brings the dirt to

SPREADERS

A tough chainsaw should be in every plotter’s arse nal. Whether it’s to prune limbs or take down entire trees, chainsaws and pole saws provide plotters with long, trouble-free performance making them a necessity for large and small plotters alike.

TILLERS

DISC HARROWS

SEED BED ROLLERS

The broadcast spreader is an effective tool for dis persing both seed and fertilizer. Pull type models attach to both tractors and utility vehicles and are inexpensive to a plotters budget. However, spreaders aren’t the most accurate method for seed dispersal, and will waste a percentage of the expensive seed’s plotters use. With that said, they are still a necessity, and even plotters who use precision seeders or no till drills could benefit from having a trusty broadcast seeder on hand.

Plotters looking to maximize their results should use the simple, yet effective, seed bed roller. Without prop er seed to soil contact, invested time is wasted. Sure, there are other ways to achieve seed to soil contact, but because food plots aren’t your typical seeding environ ment plotters should take advantage of bed rollers to insure a successful plot.

Service Continued PG14

the top while rocks and vegetation get buried. With a heavy-duty tiller like the RTR20 plotters can bypass the use of a disc, making this implement more essential to have.

LAND PRIDE NO-TILL SEEDER (NTS)

Land Pride’s SBR models not only create good con tact, but it breaks up smaller dirt clods and clumps which greatly improves germination rates. The notched rollers actually form tiny furrows that will retain mois ture and hold the seed in place. This seed bed roller can also serve as the roller attachment for Land Pride’s Seeder System. This system is designed for existing sites and includes: a disc harrow, spreader, roller, and drag, which provide plotters the one pass application needed to speed up planting.

SAWS

13GPL Fall 2022

Effective food plot sites should be located near and around cover. This means creating new sites, especially larger ones, will most likely consist of lots of tree remov al. For this case, chainsaws would be too labor intensive and time consuming. Instead, a skid steer mounted tree saw, or shears would be more practical. Tree saws are quick and effective at removing hundreds of trees an hour. Renting equipment such as a Marshall Tree Saw or tree shear is effective and affordable. Tree shears act like large scissors. In one cut shears take trees flush to the ground. When used, tree saws and shears make tree removal safer, faster, and more effective.

With all implements there are huge differences in quality and performance. Land Pride’s DH25 and 35 series of disc harrows prove that not all implements are created equal. They’re built with heavy tubular frames, not angle iron, and feature self-aligning, sealed ball bearings that are supported by think hangers to resist high torque. With 20- or 22-inch notched disc blades and large gang axles these Land Pride models will resist high loads in the hardest of ground. The DH25 and 35 series will perform well on a variety of tractors ranging from 40 to 100 horsepower, giving plotters the versatil ity needed to save time during any tillage job.

A disc is essential for breaking new ground, incorpo rating old crop residue, and prepping the ground before planting. Discs work well for breaking hard ground and can be used without the use of a tiller. However, when used alone several passes must be made before seeding, making the disc less effective.

LUXURY OR NECESSITY

For the professional plotter the Great Plains Manu facturing line of no-till drills can’t be beat! The Great Plains ten-foot, end wheel, no-till drill (1006NT) is the perfect combination between the productivity of a large drill and the versatility of a compact one. This machine is designed for the biggest of food plots and has long been used by conservation groups like Pheasants Forever chapters. The 1006NT Drill features large end wheels designed for unmatched ground gauging in rugged ter rain. In addition, the inline end wheels minimize side loading on contours and side-hills, dramatically extend ing the life of the no-till openers. Other features include 4-speed gearboxes, an automatic clutch that disengages when the drill is lifted, and rain-tight lids for maximum seed protection. With drills like the 1006NT plotters will be so productive they’ll be looking for new ground to plot.

Keeping in mind that planting food plots is somewhat of a luxury in itself, and that one man’s luxury is another man’s necessity, there are two types of equipment to plot with. There’s equipment that simply gets the job done, and there’s equipment that gets the job done and then some. No till drills and precision seeders are perfect for creating larger food plots in a short amount of time. They combine all essential equipment into one imple ment making it highly versatile, but not necessarily es sential. Likewise, tree saws/shears are extremely effective for tree removal when creating a new site, but a chainsaw will do the job too. Sprayers as well aren’t 100% neces sary; however, they are effective at maintaining a plot throughout the year. An old rotary cutter, disc or tiller, and some sort of spreader are the basics for creating a food plot with a tractor. For those who use ATVs, an allpurpose pull behind seeder is both essential and luxuri ous for creating smaller plots.

Planting food plots can be a successful way to harvest deer. They provide an opportunity for hunters to see large amounts of deer while offering the deer themselves added nutritional supplements. In many ways food plots are simply pleasing to the eye. The vibrant green is an extreme contrast to the burnt orange of fall’s rust. When thinking of plotting against the hardy Whitetail, think of the tools needed to create the most productive, yet time efficient food plot. This will allow more time spent scouting and understanding the deer herd, as opposed to changing out implements.

taneously pressing the seeds into full soil contact with a trailing fluted roller. The combination of maximum versatility and narrow transport width makes the FPS an excellent choice for far away food plots and plotters with smaller budgets.

by using a Land Pride NTS. This efficient implement provides one pass planting, saving both time and fuel. With three seed box options plotters can conveniently plant multiple seed types at different depths. The heavy frames of the Land Pride NTS seeders stay engaged to the ground ensuring accurate control of seed depth. The unique design allows the machine to be converted from a 3-point to a pull-type by adding a tongue and hydraulic gauge wheels. Save time utilizing the seed box feature that each box can be engaged and disengaged by remov ing a single lynch pin, which allows plotters to plant exactly what they want, where they want it.

For the plotter who uses utility vehicles or an ATV to power in his plants, the Food Plot Seeder by Land Pride is the ultimate time saver. It’s a highly versatile full component package designed to open and break up soil surfaces by discing the soil for seedbed or planting preparation. It will then spread the seeds while simul

s we enter into the fall after a summer of drought in most regions of Oklahoma and Texas, most opera tions are probably short on grass now and hay for your winter feeding programs. In fact, some may be feeding hay now to make it through the summer.

Fall grown bermudagrass can provide the required nutrition for dry, pregnant cows through January if the appropriate procedure is followed. Producers should plan on providing approximately 45 - 60 days of graz ing with the dormant bermudagrass.

GPL Fall 2022A18

In most instances, stockpiled bermudagrass can be used up by mid-January. Once the stockpiled bermu dagrass is completely grazed, a shift to another ber mudagrass pasture overseeded with annual ryegrass or small grains (wheat or cereal rye) can provide neces sary nutrition throughout the remainder of the winter feeding period. A short period of hay feeding may be necessary until the ryegrass pastures are ready to be grazed.Inorder for stockpiled bermudagrass and ryegrass to contribute to the program, the stocking rate must be in balance with the property’s ability to produce the forage necessary. In many instances, overall stocking rates will have to be reduced in order to provide the deferred pastures for stockpiling bermudagrass and overseeding ryegrass. Adequate moisture combined with the appropriate fertility program is required to

fertilizervalue.nutritivetityquandagrassbermusireddetheduceproandIf is not muchwilltheforageoftakeducersAugust,orafterappliedcuttinggrazinginpromaystilladvantageaccumulatedduringfall.Therenotbeasforageaccumulated

and forage nutritive value will be lower. The forage, however, may still be utilized, providing appropriate supplementation is provided.

With grass and hay in short supply, another ap proach to providing forage for the winter feed would be using standing or stockpiled bermudagrass left produced during fall and early winter months. This of course assumes that the weather pattern changes and increased rainfall is provided.

Remember that if adequate moisture is not received during September, October and November, little ber mudagrass will be produced and grazing initiation of ryegrass and small grains may be delayed. So prayers for rainfall in the early fall would be appropriate. There are many scriptures about rainfall in the Bible.

“You visit the earth and water it abundantly, enriching it greatly. God's stream is filled with water, for You prepare the earth in this way, providing [people] with grain.” (Psalm 65:9)

With most traditional winter feeding programs heavily dependent on hay, most cow-calf operations short on hay have two options, sell the cows and find other ways to feed through the winter. This is especially important when producing cows that are still in the op eration after this drought period. They will most likely be raising calves that are very valuable in the 2023 market and beyond. Also, the replacements for these cows will increase in price as well after green grass returns. So it is very important to exhaust all options available to maintain producing cows, especially those that should be in your herd for multiple years.

There's a suggested protocol for stockpiling bermu dagrass that will provide adequate nutrition for ma ture, spring-calving cows that go into the fall in good body condition. This protocol is designed to provide stockpiled bermudagrass that will provide 8-14% crude protein and >50% TDN through January. Estimate the number of acres required for your cow herd. In lieu of actual ranch forage production records, some assumption must be made. These assumptions include: a. Enough moisture will be received to produce the

BUILT TOLAST. Profit margins are usually tight for cattle producers. They’re even tighter if you’re not maximizing your herd’s time at the bunk with maximum nutrition and minimal feed waste. A combination of attention to your cattle feed ingredients and how you’re distributing them to your herd can make a major difference in overall feed costs when compared to free-choice feeding. With multiple sizes available, the Vermeer lineup of feed wagons and vertical feed mixers gives operators the option to blend or mix ration ingredients like dry hay, silage, grain and ethanol co-products at once. The result is a consistent ration every time the operator feeds cattle. OPTIMIZE FEEDING WITH VERMEER VERTICAL MIXERS. is primarily leaf and provides good nutrition. If cows continue to graze closer than the top 65%, they will be consuming mostly stems, which is much lower in nutritive value.

c. A 1000-lb cow (animal unit) will consume 26 lbs of forage dry matter (DM) per day.

1. Graze pasture to a 1-2” stubble height or harvest the final cutting of hay in preparation for fertilization approximately 8 weeks prior to first anticipated frost. Mow only as a last resort as mowing simply places thatch on top of the grass you are attempting to grow and costs money in tractor fuel and wear and tear on the equipment.

1. 25 cows x 26 lbs forage DM per day x 75 days = 48,750 DM required by the animals

3. 75,000 lbs DM requirement/2500 lbs DM per acre production = 30 acres required for stockpiling Below are some of the management practices needed to increase the chances of success in this program.

An example of a typical cow herd is demonstrated below:

4. Initiate grazing in response to the need for hay supplementationWhengrazing is initiated, control the grazing with either an electric wire or by opening and closing gates. If grazing is not controlled, much forage will be wasted. Provide cows with 1-2 days of forage only and allow enough time for cows to harvest 65% of the standing forage. The top 2/3 of the stockpiled forage

2. Apply fertility as needed and according to soil 3.samples.Defer pasture(s) from grazing and allow forage to accumulate until frost or forage is needed.

b. An appropriate amount of fertility will be applied to stockpile 2500 lbs of bermudagrass DM per acre.

If grazing is not controlled, cattle will selectively harvest the leaves the first 4-5 weeks and leave the stems which are lower in quality. At this time, it may be necessary to start supplementing the cattle with protein to prevent loss of body condition. A good method to determine if the cattle are deficient in pro tein is to observe their manure for consistency.

d. Harvest efficiency of the stockpiled bermudagrass should be 65%.

When stockpiled forage is completely grazed, it will be time to start a traditional hay feeding program or initiate grazing ryegrass or overseeded small grain pasture. A limited amount of hay may be needed be fore this pasture is ready to be grazed.

Be sure to provide free choice loose mineral sup plement to the cows and closely monitor their body condition.Thewinter grazing of stockpiled forage can help to winter cows in the right circumstances provided fall rains come and right amount of forage is utilized with correct amount of cows. Some other things to con sider to make it through this winter.

2. 48,750 lbs DM/0.65 harvest efficiency = 75,000 lbs DM production requirement

After cows graze stockpiled forage to the appropri ate height, advance the electric wire or allow access to other pastures to provide additional days of grazing.

1. Observe the body condition of the cattle and use appropriate supplementation to maintain that body 2.condition.Beaware that extremely wet conditions during December and January may reduce forage nutritive 3.value.Do not begin the stockpiling process earlier than eight weeks prior to the first historical frost date. To do so will result in accumulated forage that is ex tremely low in nutritive value.

A beautiful rustic entrance frames the property while a gravel road follows the flow of the land to introduce visitors to two state of the art sporting clay courses, a thousand yard shooting range, five luxury cabins, two high capacity event venues, a two-story VIP lodge worthy of it’s own place in Yellowstone, an elegant board room capable of seating up to twenty-four people, and eight fishing ponds. “I remember watching the sunset with my mom as a kid after we had just harvested our Christmas tree one year. We were sitting on sunset hill, which is at the center of The Cedar Gate property. As one of the relics of the 1930’s Dust Bowl, it’s only about as tall as a two story house, but surrounded by farmland as far as the eye can see in any direction, it’s the best sunset viewing spot for miles around.Aswe watched the sun sink below the horizon, I told my mom, ‘Someday, I’m going to buy this place and do something special with it.’ At the time, I had no idea what that meant, but I did have a dream and in my experience, God often calls us to take the first step before he reveals the next. That’s what the journey of faith is all about.

The Cedar gate is perfect for hosting corporate retreats, weddings, or even sportsman events. It's even become somewhat of Governor Kevin Stitt's retreat.

Our family bought The Cedar Gate property in 2005 and now, seventeen years later, the dream just keeps getting bigger. We get to serve thousands of people every year, support world changing businesses and ministries, and be a part of the way God is transform ing lives for his kingdom. And yet, even with all the things we get to use it for, it’s still our family’s farm at heart. A place we can call home for generations. That’s why we built it, and it always will be," said Brian Hill, The Cedar Gate founder. "I think my earliest memories at the farm (I know, I know, it’s called The Cedar Gate now, but we used to just call it “the farm” back then) are our annual father-son camp ing trips we used to do with the men and boys in our circle of family friends. The dads took the girls out there on a different trip every year too, but I wasn’t there for those so I don’t have much to say about them. What I can say a lot about are the times dad, my brothers, and me would load up our tent, sleeping bags, and propane cooker and meet all our best friends out at the farm to raise hell for the weekend just as men!

I’ve wrecked four-wheelers and jack hammered trailers and received my share of scoldings for reckless behavior, but never once did dad diminish his faith in me. He put his trust in me, and that called out the man in me to meet his trust.

Few activities beat “dads vs. boys” paintball wars, rip-roaring on four-wheelers, shooting turtles in the pond, roasting hot dogs over a campfire, and attacking your friends with bamboo stick-swords. Dad and us boys fell asleep in a dog pile every night to keep warm and woke up every morning to the promise of eggs, bacon, pancakes, and gas station powder donuts.Amidst

Speaking of shoots, the last photo shows a shooter preparing to take a target on the 1,000 yard range.

all our shenanigans, what dad was really doing was building up bold, Godly men. I know from personal experience just how powerful it is to have a father who you know believes in you. That was constantly communicated in everything we did, from things as simple as dad letting me and my brothers go drive four-wheelers by ourselves with a strong “be wise, boys” pep talk beforehand, to dad having me drive his truck across the property with a load of hay bales on a trailer behind me.

“It wasn’t originally the equipment that drew me to Great Plains, I had never even tried a Kubota, but the way that I was treated by the Great Plains Kubota people left me wanting to figure out a way to do business with them. This was a result of the way I was treated, with a selfless serving me first mentality as opposed to serving me to get something, they were truly just there to help and to serve first.”

Oct. 13th 9a.m.

wo years ago, on a typical hot, humid summer day Great Plains Kubota service employee Miguel Sigala saw a pickup broken down in the road. Inside that truck sat Cedar Gate owner, Brian Hill.

“We made the initial visit to Cedar gate, and from there it led to them becoming not only a partner, but a customer. We later had our ministry meeting there which was the catalyst to the rejuvenation of this magazine and other ministries as a company. We’ve had the privilege of being able to pray directly for our state leaders through the relationships at Cedar Gate, and our touch in the Christian business community has grown through com

“I was in the middle of the road in heavy traffic, and 100 plus degree weather, hood up and frustrated that I ran out of diesel, when up pulls an employee of Great Plains Kubota asking if I needed help. Being so kind and helpful, he left to get some jumper cables while I kept looking in my toolbox and eventually found a set. I looked up and there was another Great Plains Kubota truck parked right in front of me. The driver, Shawn Priddy offered to give me a jump. After my truck started back up, Shawn and I got talking about how grateful and appreciative I was to Miguel for stopping to help. I gave him my business card and told him that we have a retreat center west of Kingfisher, and that if they ever needed to use our property for anything we would take care of them on the house”, said Brian Hill Owner of Cedar Gate.

“I started looking into getting out of my old equip ment and upgrading to Kubota, I asked them to share with me what they had and how it compared to other brands, and to tell me why I should switch over. They gave me all of their specs on their equipment and after discussing it further, it not only made logical sense, but it made financial sense to switch over to Kubota equip ment from Great Plains. After I used their clean and ready to use loaner for a couple weeks and experiencing the joystick controls, air-conditioning, sound, and rubber tracks, I was determined never to go back.”

In many cases, companies have maintenance teams devoted to upkeep and regular service of their ma chines, which is necessary for fault-free operation. Mechanics must check fluids and hydraulics, service must happen regularly, parts must be changed, tech nology needs upgrading, sometimes leaks happen and the scheduling for usage and transport repre sents challenges. You can gauge rental fees, while the expense of maintenance and service in private owner ship typically tends to be less predictable.

Equipment of all sizes can be very expensive, especially large equipment such as an excavator, track loader or a telehandler. They are large investments that might take several years to be able to justify the capital costs. Also, not having a large chunk of money tied up in a piece of capital equipment frees up funds for you to pursue opportunities or needs.

The Rental Opportunities of GP Rents Our "Pure" Rental Stores

Squeeze In: A Renting equipment provides customers and equipment operators to take advantage of a large variety of equipment that may be very specific in nature or to the job. The ability to utilize equip ment that may not be used on a daily basis is one of the many benefits of using rental equipment. Here a Kubota SCL loads rock through a very narrow back yard gate.

ental options for equipment are many at our stand alone rental locations of GP Rents in Ardmore, Davis, Norman and now Duncan! Rental equipment can fill in during an emergency or provide the flexibility you might need for your operation. Rentals can be an at tractive option for many agricultural and construction operations, both large and small. What are the advan tages of renting equipment versus purchasing equip ment or maybe missing out on a job or opportunity by not doing anything at all?

1. No Need for the Up Front Investment

6. Track New Opportunities

Anyone who decides to purchase a new piece of equipment will need a short and long-term storage solution for it. Nobody wants to leave a vital piece of new equipment sitting out. Continuous exposure to the elements and a poorly ventilated storage space will degrade machine quality. Everyone realizes that space

2. Decrease Long-run Expense

Equipment rental can do just as much to increase business opportunity as it does to reduce operating expense. Once you factor in the possibility of renting a piece of specialty equipment, it opens the door to

3. Avoid Storage, Transport Costs

Most owners and managers would agree that lost time at the job site eats into profit and deadline compliance, so it’s never good to have people wait ing around on a piece of equipment to arrive or for it to be sitting idle because it stalled. When you have a rental agreement, it should be ready for delivery and pickup for the exact time frame you need. If you need a piece of farm equipment for a couple of weeks for pecan harvest or some other critical activity, you can get that. It can arrive when you start and leave when you finish. In addition, since professionals maintain and service the equipment, it is less likely to fail and waste job hours while an alternative is found and transported.

Rentals can save you from the worry over logis tics in transporting equipment from site to site, since you can simply have the rental equipment delivered and picked up when needed. It can help you respond faster to varied needs in different locations. Being able to place the right piece of equipment in the right place and for the right amount of time can streamline operations, shorten the workday and save money.

While many circumstances apply to an individual business’ tax return, rental expenses are a deductible expense while purchased equipment is taxed at a de preciated rate over its lifetime, unless you are able to take advantage of Section 179 in the IRS tax code.

R

is expensive no matter where you live or what purpose it will serve, and equipment rental eliminates the need for long-term storage.

Maybe your business looks to grow and you’d like to see how certain models of equipment, attachments and accessories work. You can get a preview by rent ing the equipment, which will give you a feel for how it works, the time it takes, its usability and other things that might affect a purchase decision. Also, you can rent equipment that you might only need for one use or one time, like grinding a stump or digging a ditch for a water line.

evenManagingonepiece of heavy equipment takes time and skill, much less a small or large fleet of machines. When you rent, things such as fluid testing, count, tenance, service, checks, mainhoursschedules, parts and depreciation becomes someone else’s responsibility. Not only is it easier to let the professionals at GP Rents handle some of those logistics for you, but also it frees up your valuable time and saves money in many cases.

10. Get the Latest and Greatest Equipment that features up-to-date technology can benefit a business greatly by bringing efficiency and spe cialization to the project. A piece of rental equipment can potentially do a few specialized jobs so much better than general equipment that you gain in time saved as well as wear and tear on the machines.

Many businesses are worried about the fact that it’s hard to compete against the big companies that have the nicest, newest, best machines while they, in comparison, make it work with older ones. Equipment rental can shift that age-old characteristic so that small competi tors can procure the same type of equipment for jobs, if that’s what will win the work. If a client asks what ma chines you will use or about a key piece of equipment, you can rest assured knowing that you have access to a diverse and efficient fleet of machines, just like the big ger companies.

When it comes to renting agricultural and construc tion equipment for your operation’s needs, GP Rents is here to serve you. Whether you are needing a tractor for pecan harvest or a skid steer to remove brush or maybe you need a backhoe to lay a water line, these are just a few of many choices available at the four "rental only" stores of GP Rents.

Many businesses tend to make do with whatever machines are nearby and/or owned by the company, but equipment selection according to technology can po tentially enable you to do many existing jobs with fewer
