AND MORE...

Laugh It Off: Sometimes you just have to laugh it off! The last week of June was a busy month at the Sunrise Ranch, as it was the location for a Kubota Tractor Corporation national photo shoot and media event. During this week a crew of photographers and videographers gathered video and photo content specifically focused on Kubota's larger AG Tractors and Hay Tools. During a portion of the shoot focused on the Kubota WRseries bale wrapper a minor accident happened with the wrapper under the operation of GP District Manager, Garrett Clark, far left. Of course all those in attendance had a laugh on his expense. . Top Photo By: Reed Boettcher / Lower Photo Supplied By: Kubota Tractor Corp.

Fall Trout I've always been a fisherman. For as long as I can remember I've been fishing. When I was lucky enough to

tag along with my dad and his friend I really felt like an angler, but for most of the time I fished at local parks or ponds. These places, combined with the solitude of teaching oneself, were the foundations of the angler I am today. I am by no means a great fisherman, but I am a fisherman in the true sense of the word. Meaning, if there's a body of water I can probably pull a fish out of it. I grew up eating what I caught so fishing was always more than just a sport or pastime, it was a means of food production. Of course Bass were always on the menu, and my all time preference has always been catfish. I'm a cat-fisherman at heart. It wasn't until a late dear friend of mine and former college, Weston Jackson, introduced to the word of trout fishing. I made fun of the idea at first, typically because the size of trout years back were very small and reminded me of bait I would use to catch a Flathead. However, it wasn't until I started catching bigger trout and in different environments that I became "hooked." Oklahoma's trout population is almost completely artificial which means it's typically seasonal. This in itself gave me the opportunity to wet a line in the fall and winter months, while waiting for spring and summer fish to start biting. It really all started at the Blue River Public Hunting And Fishing Area, but I soon started looking for other local bodies of water to catch the picky slimmers. Out west you've got Medicine Park, and in the east you've got the Mt. Fork of the Little River. It was on the Mt. Fork in Southeastern Okla. where I really began to see trout's potential for a good fight. Really isn't that what we are all looking for as anglers, a good fight with long runs or several rolls and jumps? For the sake of expanding my trout prowess I decided to go to the White River with a couple of GP Sales PROS. Here, like other rivers beneath large lakes, trout have been introduced and are highly sought after. My goal was to catch a BIG brown trout, which is what the White is known for. Trout, like any other fish require the correct gear for their size, or possible size rather. I guess the moral of the editorial is if you want to catch big fish use big gear. The Brown Trout to the left was caught at night using a shad on a circle hook, much like I would for a catfish. Well, it paid off. The circle hook was in the corner of the mouth as it should be, however there were at least 6 small trout hooks in this old brutes mouth where others have failed. Trout aren't the best eating, but they fight hard, and Reed Boettcher they provide fishing opportunities during the fall and beyond. - Editor

Cold Water...Cold Trout: You don't have travel to the White River in Arkansas to catch good trout like this big brown caught by the author. Oklahoma has several great locations that provide both scenic views, like this panoramic of the White, and quantity and quality of fish. All photos on this page were taken at White Hole Resort on the White River. Photos By: Reed Boettcher & William Wear

BEST PRACTICES Safely Using, Mixing, Storing, & Administering Vaccinations & Injectables When Working Cattle By Amanda Radke

T

he summer grazing season is upon us, and I’m sure most of you have already worked and moved your cow-calf pairs to summer pastures. For many, this time of year brings families and friends together for backgrounding and branding before the official turnout date. And whether you work calves now or in the fall, it’s always good to have a refresher on how to handle, store and administer vaccinations for safety and efficacy.

Here are ten simple tips to keep in mind:

1. Order vaccinations and supplies well in advance of the day you’ll need them. 2. Consult with your veterinarian and nutritionist if considering updating protocols or changing products. 3. Select a high-quality product considering both price and value. 4. Carefully read labels and follow as directed, checking both dosage and route of administration. 5. Store vaccines according to label instructions. 6. Always use a clean, sterile needle, and have spares on hand when administering to cattle. 7. Mix only one bottle at a time. 8. Heavy-duty coolers with ice are critical to have on site as you administer vaccines. 9. Always properly clean equipment and syringes after vaccinating. 10. Keep accurate records of vaccination and treatment status of animals. For a more in-depth look at these tips, you can reference the following articles: 1. “Management tips for vaccines and injectables” by Heidi Carroll for South Dakota State University Carroll writes, “A good herd health plan involves both a vaccination program and treatment plan developed with your veterinarian. Approximately 70% of beef operations administer vaccines to cows and calves at least one time every 12 months (NAHMS, 2007–2008). Additionally, 68% of operations used oral or injectable 6

GPL Fall 2021

antibiotics to treat disease in any cattle or calves. This annual financial investment in herd health products is important for animal well-being and production success. The ultimate success of these products is dependent on how we handle and administer them to the animal.” 2. “Cattle vaccine handling and management guidelines” from the University of Idaho Here is an excerpt, “Studies from the University of Arkansas, the University of Nevada, and the University of Idaho have indicated that veterinary vaccine product efficacy is at risk due to improper handling and storage by vaccine retailers and livestock producers. Most animal vaccines require maintenance at refrigeration temperatures of 35–45F. Yet these studies showed that anywhere from 25% to 76% of refrigerators used for vaccine storage in the livestock industry failed to maintain these temperatures.” 3. “10 tips to better handling vaccines” by Rick Rasby for University of Nebraska-Lincoln Rasby writes, “Vaccinations are an important key to proper animal health and herd health management. And, to ensure that vaccination is as effective as possible, proper vaccine handling and administration is very important. The following tips, provided by Dr. Dale Groteluseschen, DVM and veterinarian, will help the breeder get on the right path to better herd management.” 4. “Cow herd vaccination guidelines” by John Wenzel for New Mexico State University Wenzel writes, Vaccination is a tool that can be used very effectively to help reduce the incidence of disease in a cow herd. As with all tools, vaccinations must be administered correctly to get the full benefit. Proper timing, route of administration, dosage, and type of vaccine are paramount to preventing disease. Beef quality assurance guidelines should be followed whenever vaccines or medications are administered. Your veterinarian can help you develop a vaccination program specifically for your operation and geographic area. The following protocols are suggested for a fall vaccination program.” Based on your experiences, chute-side, I would love to hear what you would add to this list. Tips on realizing the full value of your calf crop.

FINDING WAYS TO BETTER

Marketing feeder cattle is a routine prac-

tice for cow-calf producers but one that also brings with it the challenge to find ways to elevate merchandising of the calf crop in efforts to increase returns. “It’s the most common question I get,” Paul Dykstra, assistant director of supply management and analysis with Certified Angus Beef (CAB), told listeners on the recent virtual Feeding Quality Forum. Producers regularly seek out Dykstra’s expertise on merchandising their calf crop in effort to gain premiums or add value. Dykstra tells those looking for advice that he believes the key or secret to successful marketing is to think about where the customer makes the most money. For example, think about how the cattle feeder can make money by purchasing your calves. What kind of animals do cattle feeders want to purchase to get a better return on their investment and optimize the value of their purchase? “By understanding the demand drivers of your customers, you as the producer can and should aim for that target. Each customer (cattle feeder, cattle buyer, etc.,) will have different parameters,” says Dykstra. Cattle with attributes such as good health, above-average feed conversion, and the ability to hang a premium carcass are demand drivers’ producers should strive for. Weaning prior to delivery is another positive attribute. “The demand in the marketplace for weaned calves has been 8

ER SELL YOUR FEEDER CATTLE very evident on the summer video auctions this year,” he says. “Fewer and fewer buyers are excited about feeding a freshly weaned calf.” Even though there is a cost associated with weaning and preconditioning calves for 45 days, the payoff is demonstrated in the market, he explains. The cattle’s ability to achieve Choice or Prime quality will also influence demand. From 2000 – 2019, the percentage of carcasses grading Choice and Prime, as identified by USDA, has dramatically increased. Today, the industry is harvesting 82% Choice and Prime, with Prime sometime making up 10% of that total. “Quality grades in cattle have improved and consequently the expectation of the packer is for cattle to reach the upper-quality grade levels.” He reports the number of cattle meeting the 10 specifications required for cattle to qualify for CAB has also increased, currently, averaging around 35%. “Even with more CAB product to sell, the premium back to the brand continues.” Dykstra explains that more supply has not meant fewer dollars for the producer. To achieve these quality standards and be eligible to qualify for CAB, the cattle must also carry the genetics. “Feeder calves with the genetics to perform GPL Fall 2021

and grade are providing the producer with a risk management tool.” The beef cattle marketing specialist has witnessed that the best cattle in an upmarket do well, and the best cattle in a down market keep your head above water. Once producers have focused on the production parameters to excel, they may also want to consider added value options to allow them to access even greater premiums. This would include enrolling or certifying cattle in value added programs such as natural, non-hormone treated cattle (NHTC), breed programs like Angus Link, beef quality assurance (BQA), etc. “Some of these programs can average an added premium of $10 per cwt.” He noted enrollment in these third-party process verification programs (PVP) further describing specific management practices, marketing eligibility, and/or genetics has proven to be effective for many that have chosen to do so. Enrollment in PVP programs verifies ranch practices to buyers. Documentation, genetics, feeding and carcass history, health records and other management practices can all be used in building a resume on your cattle, notes Dykstra. But to take merchandising up a notch, he says take the time to explain the genetic superiority behind the cattle. For example, the sires of the offering are in the top percentile rank of the breed for carcass merit, etc., are talking points producers should emphasize to help further educate the customer about the cattle. Although having all the production attributes possible on the cattle is important in marketing, Dykstra says the number one key to merchandising feeder cattle is networking. “You have to build relationships with potential feed yards, market representatives or other buyers. If you want to stand out across the thousands of head that are marketed every day and every year, they (buyers) need to know who you are, what your product is, and why they should buy it.” B. Lynn Gordon is a freelance writer from Sioux Falls, S.D. The opinions of the author are not necessarily those of beefmagazine.com, Farm Progress, or Great Plains living.

Dreams Rose Rock Ranch of

Sitting atop the hill in their Kubota RTV1140 while

overlooking their beautiful 10-acre ranch, I couldn’t help but notice the excitement in Matt and Leisha Gibson’s voices as they described their dream home. The home that is to be built in the exact spot where we were sitting. Under the shade of one of the trees lays an inscribed rock with the words, “Rose Rock Ranch, est. 2020." It was under this tree that the Gibson’s would sit and imagine all the possibilities of their new property. Matt and Leisha’s dream to own a ranch came true in March 2020 when they broke ground on what is

now known as Rose Rock Ranch. A year prior, the Gibsons knew they wanted a home on their bare 10-acres, but they also saw the potential to start a business on the property. Rose Rock Ranch will soon be the home to 10 to 14 miniature red and black Herefords, with the goal to have some of them as show cattle for future grandkids and nieces. With the size of their property, raising miniature Herefords is the perfect business for the Gibson’s. Staying conscious of the land with the idea to regrow the soil, they also plan to use rotational grazing for their cattle. With this technique, the cattle will graze on quarter sections at a time, allowing the other sections to rest with the plan of throwing down winter grass for the colder months Continued on pg12

for the cattle to graze on. The Gibson’s are also adopting retired racehorses to give them a home. The two R’s on the gate of the grand entrance to this ranch stand for “Rose Rock.” The name rightfully came from the amount of rose rock found on the ranch. Being in Oklahoma, where the dirt is red and sandy, the Gibson’s were excited to find inspiration for their ranch’s namesake in the form of the beautiful state rock. Situated at the end of the long driveway is the stunning steel shop, making a statement with the blue roof. Inside the shop you will find what will soon be living quarters for family while they are building their house. In the shop, you will also find the Gibson’s Kubota M6060, zero-turn mower, and RTV, each playing a major role in getting work done on the ranch. Leisha has been drawing and designing her vi12

sion for the ranch. You can see her passion in every detail and dimension of the gated entrance and shop, along with the design a horse barn soon on the way. She has been documenting the Rose Rock Ranch journey through social media, with pictures revealing her blueprint drawings of the structures side-by-side the construction process, along with the animals and people that have made it out to the property so far. Although a few roadblocks in the construction process have slowed down some of their progress, it is undeniable the positivity and passion for their ranch that radiates from Matt and Leisha. They seem to be enjoying every step of their journey in building the ranch of their dreams. A place to slow down, enjoy family, and take in the beauty Oklahoma has to offer, Rose Rock Ranch has more history than the Gibson’s originally thought. GPL Fall 2021

When showing Matt’s parent’s the ranch, they pointed out the neighboring property of what once was Twelve Oaks. This happened to be the place where his parents had their first date. This just adds some sentiment to where they plan to settle down in the near future. In four years, the idea is to have their dream house built on top of the hill, giving them the perfect view of the pasture below. The Gibson’s are loyal Kubota customers, and we are lucky to be the brand serving a genuine family with big dreams. Matt GPL Fall 2021

could not speak highly enough of their experiences with the salespeople at Great Plains in Edmond, leading to their purchase of many pieces of Kubota equipment. “You can just tell it’s a family business at Great Plains,” Matt explained after he and Leisha were welcomed and recognized with smiling faces by Great Plains staff at the OKC Farm Show this year. You can keep up with the Gibson’s journey on Instagram @rose_rock_ranch and check back with GPj over the next few years as we follow up with their progress with Rose Rock Ranch. 13

Giving Back By Steve Swigert Director of Special Projects, Serving GP Employees & Customers

Several years ago, I was given this John Wesley

quote at a retreat. This quote coupled with a better relationship with Jesus changed my life. "Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all of the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, for as long as you can." This new perspective changed the direction my life was headed and the way I worked with others. Before that time my goals and priorities were to work and play hard with little time left over for anything else. But, I discovered that this philosophy for life left me empty inside and it caused me to miss opportunities for great joy and happiness. I have been blessed in my life by a great family, friends and opportunities. But without working to place God first in my life they had to take a distant second in my priority list. Making God first hasn’t been easy and continues to be a challenge each day, but with those challenges come great blessings. Since that time, I have looked for opportunities to give back through service to others. I’m not perfect in my actions or activities, but I pray for opportunities to help others and I try to be a person that gives my skills and time to help people. And for the last number of years, God has blessed those prayers through opportunities to help others locally, nationally, and even internationally. 14

There are numerous specific ways to give back, but mainly they boil down to these 3 areas. • Giving of your time—time on this earth is ultimately the greatest gift you have and how you spend your time tells you what your priorities are. • Give of your resources—most people think that is means money, and it could mean that, but not always as it could mean anything you possess. • Give of your skills and knowledge—I think this is might be the biggest area, especially late in life or career when you have experience and wisdom to pass on to the next generation. No matter what we give back and how much, ultimately, we are just giving back a portion of what God has blessed us with and I believe that if we are blessed and don’t share of those blessings that those blessings will not be with us. And now I have the opportunity to give back by serving Great Plains Kubota customers and employees. I have also been asked to facilitate opportunities for both of those groups to give back as well. Through prayer and with God’s direction I look forward to seeing what He has in mind for the future. What does it all mean? At the end of the day, or your life, or career, it’s not about what you have or even what you have accomplished. It’s about who you have lifted up, who you’ve made better. It’s about what you’ve given back.

The Recipe for Happiness & Fulfillment

By Amanda Radke

make it a priority to brighten up your community with good works and small acts of kindness The world is a little topsy turvy these days. Surely, I’m not the only one who has noticed.

In the upheaval and chaos, there’s much sadness, sickness, disconnectedness, isolation, fear, and anxiety. With ugly headlines dominating the mainstream news, it can be hard to take it all in. And its even harder to grasp that this is the world my kids are growing up in. It makes me sad. And I know it makes a lot of you sad, as well. How do I know this? Because you’ve gotten vulnerable, and you’ve reached out. I know that’s hard to do for tough-as-nails cowboys like you, but I’ve heard your cries and shared your concerns. And I just want you to know — you’re not alone. Despite the negativity in this world, there’s good news — rural America is still here, and there is goodness in the Heartland. We are still here. We are still standing. We are still filled with hope. We are still raising food for the world. We are still standing in our truth. We are still nurturing the land and the animals. And we are still one big family. You see I’ve had the chance to travel quite a bit this GPL Fall 2021

summer speaking at agricultural meetings and conservative events across the country. Stepping away from my quiet and peaceful life on the ranch isn’t always the easiest thing for me to do, but let me tell you — connecting with others in the heartland who are facing the same struggles but who have the same grit and determination to succeed anyway — well that’s worth the trip for me.

Because no matter where I go, I see the same things. The Veteran proudly wearing an American hat. The mother pushing a stroller full of rambunctious kids. The rancher father-son duo seeking solutions for the business. The energetic college kid eager to serve and learn. The multi-generation families navigating tough times with a smile, always willing to lend a helping hand to someone else. The American flags adorning main street. The church bells ring. The small town cafes serving up hot coffee and rolls. The truckers dutifully passing through. The small acts of kindness wherever you go. Continued on pg21

State of the Brand

"It was the best of times, It was the worst of times"

I’ve never lived through such a time of contradic-

tions as we’ve seen the past 18 months. It’s been like a roller coaster ride that you’d like to get off of, but it won’t stop. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” is the often quoted first line from Charles Dickens book, The Tale of Two Cities. Even though it was written in 1859, the quote seems so appropriate today for what has happened during this pandemic. Here’s a few more lines from the opening paragraph of his book about the French Revolution. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period.” It was early March last year when I first began to realize that the Wuhan virus was something we are going to need to take seriously. Rumors the government could shut down the economy started going around and I questioned if we would be in business

24

very long. Then the doomsday predictions started being the focus of the news and I began to wonder if we would even still be alive. The first few days after the shut downs began, our phones didn’t ring unless it was an employee asking if they needed to come to work. I would describe the first couple of weeks as if we had a major ice storm. There were a few brave souls out but mostly the roads were empty and no one was calling. Slowly, most began to realize that we’re not all going to die from the virus and so began this time of contradiction much like that Dickens was describing. It was the best of times for our business from a sheer volume standpoint. By June we were so busy that we began asking ourselves if this was really happening. My pat answer when asked about business is that “we are being blessed”. I almost felt guilty telling others how busy we were as many businesses were completely shut down. The equipment business was deemed “essential”, we were allowed to continue operations and so we weren’t closed for a single day. In spite of the virus, Great Plains has grown significantly the past year. We opened a rental location in Norman, started a Kubota dealership in Norman and

GPL Fall 2021

most recently were able to acquire the Kubota Dealership in Stillwater. It was the worst of times in that we were trying to do more business than ever with a large percentage of our employees not working due to illness or quarantines. Everyday presented another challenge that we’d never faced before. Disinfecting, distancing and parking lot parts deliveries became the norm. Then came the shortages that haven’t subsided. It was the best of times for many individuals as they had a little extra money and were afforded the opportunity to stay home for a while. They were able to complete projects at home or better yet, just spend precious time with family that couldn’t have happened if it were not for the shutdowns. It was a blessing in disguise for many. Yet, it was the worst of times for some. We probably all know someone that has passed away due to the virus or at the least, a family member or friend who was or is seriously ill. It’s easy to think that we are the only ones that have ever lived through something similar. But, I suspect most generations have lived through times, as Dickens said, “so far like the present period”. There have been other pandemics, revolutions, wars, droughts and catastrophic events but there was one particular generation that witnessed the best of times, then the worst of times and then the best time ever.

GPL Fall 2021

That time was a little over 2,000 years ago. God sent his Son, Jesus, as prophesied for hundreds of years to be the final sacrifice for the sins of man. Many would come to believe in him during his ministry here on earth and he developed a group of close followers. They witnessed first hand Jesus’s teachings and the numerous miracles he performed. It truly was the best of times for His disciples. Yet, there were many who didn’t believe. Some said it was blasphemy that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God and nearly all of the religious leaders of the day saw him as a threat to their authority. In one short week, the followers of Christ were devastated as Jesus was falsely accused, condemned in a mock trial and crucified. What appeared to be the worst that could happen, the worst of times, turned out to be not just the best of times, but the best time ever. Jesus was resurrected from death on the third day to reign for eternity as Lord and Saviour for all that place their faith in Him. I admit that the fear of the pandemic caused me to question if I would survive the virus. I’ve been known to say that I’m not scared of being dead, it’s just the dying part that I don’t look forward to! I don’t fear being dead because of the best time ever, the time that Jesus Christ rose from the grave after dying on the cross as a sacrifice for my sins and yours. If you are unsure of where you will spend eternity, I encourage you to find a Bible and read about the best time ever.

A LOOK AT THE NEW KUBOTA SCL1000

Kubota Tractor Corporation announced the

highly anticipated SCL1000 to the company’s compact construction equipment line at the 2020 CONEXPO trade show last March. Kubota took their time to perfect this compact stand-on track loader in order to provide power, mobility, and ease for operators. The SCL1000 is one of Kubota’s newest construction offerings, furthering their diversification and commitment to innovation within the compact equipment market. Already having received five industry awards, this machine was designed to meet the demands of landscape contractors and rental yards alike. With its compact size, packed with performance and features, Kubota’s new stand-on compact loader will take on the toughest of projects, all while being agile enough to work in tight spaces.

Exclusive Features

At a narrow 36” overall width with 9.8” wide tracks, the SCL1000 has a low 4.0 psi ground pressure, giving it impressive mobility and traction force to work in the smallest of spaces. While it may be compact, the SCL1000 is not lacking in force with its 24.8 horsepower turbocharged engine. This engine has high altitude performance, no DPF, and operates surprisingly quiet. The integrated track design is completed with a robust undercarriage welded to the main frame, a grease track tension design, and sealed oil bath rollers. To top off these exclusive features, the SCL1000 is equipped with an LCD Color Dash Monitoring System with keyless start and pass code protection. This also provides the operator easy to read monitoring and service reminders.

By Maddie Rehl

Outperforming the competition, the vertical lift loader arms have a reach of 26” and a hinge pin height of 84.7”, giving this machine the ability to handle tough tasks and materials. With a rated operating capacity of 1,000 lbs., and 15 gallons per minute auxiliary hydraulic flow, the SCL1000 is able to transport heavy materials easily. This machine also works in low clearance conditions, and has a low impact, wide track design, making damage to grass or landscaping minimal. The SCL1000 also has the best in class travel speed at 4.9 mph, to get jobs done quickly as well as effectively. When it comes to attachments this machine can utilize a variety. From buckets, compact forks, and trenchers, to augers, breaker mounts, and skid rakes, the new Kubota skid loader can take on a variety of projects with both power and mobility in mind.

Safety and Convenience

This Kubota standing compact loader was designed with operator safety in mind. The engine RPM must be idle in order to unlock the hydraulics for operation. There is also a walk behind mode to increase the ease and safety when loading the machine on a trailer, and as the operator leaves the platform, a parking brake is automatically engaged. The operator experiences maximum comfort on the cushioned loader boom cylinders and adjustable suspension. Service on this machine is convenient with easily accessed centralized filters and maintenance items.

Power and Performance

The hydraulic pump is directly connected to the 24.8 HP turbocharged engine to reduce machine maintenance.

THE WHY - WHAT - AND HOW OF OVERSEEDING ANNUAL CROPS IN PERENNIAL PASTURES by James Locke, senior soils and crops consultant | jmlocke@noble.org

Overseeding annual crops into perennial pastures

is a well-accepted and viable practice. How-ever, there are several things to consider before you start. Your answers to the why, what and how questions below will guide you to the best fit for your operation. WHY: WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE OVERSEEDED CROP? We overseed other crops into perennial pasture crops for many reasons. The two most common goals are: 1. Extending the grazing season by adding an annual crop that grows in an alternative season to the perennial crop. 2. Overseeding legumes to add nitrogen to the soil for perennial forage growth. Overseeding also can be used for: • Improving overall forage quality by adding a higher quality annual, such as an annual clover, to a lower quality perennial, such as toxic endophyte-infected tall fescue. • Increasing soil organic matter to increase waterholding capacity. • Adding biological diversity to a monoculture system. • Improving soil health by adding living roots to soil year-round. All of these fit hand-in-glove with the sustainable, or regenerative, agricultural management systems being promoted today. WHAT: INTO WHAT PERENNIAL FORAGE CROP WILL YOU BE OVER-SEEDING? Is the perennial forage warm-season, such as bermudagrass or Bahiagrass? Or a cool-season forage, such as tall fescue, orchardgrass or wheatgrass? While we want to reap the benefits of an overseeded crop, we don’t want to damage the primary crop. For instance, a common practice is to overseed annual ryegrass in bermudagrass pastures. This can be a very beneficial, but if the ryegrass is not grazed or hayed off, it can severely compete with, or even smother out, the bermudagrass. GPL Fall 2021

HOW: WHICH PLANTING METHOD WILL BEST ESTABLISH THE OVER-SEEDED CROP? The most important key to establishing any seeded crop is getting good seed-to-soil contact. A very close second is having the seed placed at a depth where it can germinate and emerge with enough energy to establish and thrive. If seed is planted too deep, it either may use all its energy reserves before emergence, die soon after emergence, or have its production significantly delayed or reduced. Here are planting method options for overseeded crops, with their pros and cons: The only way to ensure any consistency in planting depth or seed-to-soil contact is to use a properly calibrated planter, usually a no-till drill, for planting into a perennial sod. In order to get good seed-to-soil contact and the right depth, you need to be able to get the seed to the soil, which requires that the perennial forage crop has been managed well. Managing the forage residual is often as much an art as a science. 1. Methods include grazing, haying or mowing to the desired stubble height, or chemical frosting the primary forage. Chemical frosting is using a low rate of herbicide, usually glyphosate, to mimic a light freeze on the primary perennial forage. This allows the overseeded crops to establish with less competition from the primary forage. 2. Another seeding option is broadcasting seed and allowing livestock to trample it in. While this option can be successful, it offers the least control over planting depth and soil contact. This option works best with species that are best adapted to very shallow plantings. 3. A final option is planting green, which means planting into the perennial forage without manipulating that forage. While green planting can be successful, expect that production from the overseeded forage will be significantly delayed and reduced. IF THE RYEGRASS IS NOT GRAZED OR HAYED OFF, IT CAN SEVERELY COMPETE WITH, OR EVEN SMOTHER OUT, THE BERMUDAGRASS.
