Summer Vacation In Fall

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if schools replaced summer break with fall break? Think

about it for a second. What grand summertime activities would we be missing out on? Maybe we'd miss a couple sunny picnics, but I'd be willing to bet there would be less flies and humidity if the same picnic was held in the fall. My point is, and maybe it's just me, but everything I enjoy most is at it's best in autumn.

If you want to take a hike, do some sight seeing, or take a scenic drive, you won't find a better time for this than fall. If you're a hunter, fall is better than your birthday and Christmas rolled into one. I can actually remember a time when the smaller schools around me took off for deer gun season. But alas, we don't have summer vacation in fall. We do have fall break, which turned out to be all the time I needed for a great vacation with my girls.

This fall break, my family and I enjoyed a smorgasbord of autumn activities. We started our fall feast with a scenic drive through the winding Ozarks to reach our first destination, Eureka Springs. We'd never been to this northern Arkansas town, and it didn't disappoint. Granted, we had tons of anticipation going there, but the variety and amount of things to do in such a small area was too much not to enjoy. Our lodging was the historic and notoriously haunted Crescent Hotel, but other than the "Ghost Tour" we didn't spend much time there, which left more time for shopping, hiking, and visiting local attractions like "The Christ of the Ozarks," "Thorncrown Chapel," and "Quigley's Castle." Heading home after such sites was bitter sweet, and if it wasn't for the beautiful drive on Scenic 10 next to the Illinois River it would have been a lot harder to swallow. Sometimes the drive is the best part, and if any fall trip can go as smoothly and safely as ours did, it's a win!

So, the next time you're planning a vacation look beyond the boundaries of the beach, and look to the natural beauty and decay of autumn to provide rest and relaxation. Stay blessed.

The M8 Series is Kubota’s breakthrough tractor line boasting over 200 horsepower. Recently Kubota held a product launch

for their all new series of tractors called the M8 which will become the new “big boy” in Kubota’s tractor line up.

Over the last 8 years Kubota has made various strategic moves to add to their product line. They acquired Kvernland (Better known in the US as Vicon) in 2012.

Then they acquired Great Plains Manufacturing in 2016. All of these moves have been to expand the line and provide Kubota the ability to become a major player in the agricultural production market.

Along with these purchases, Kubota has made strategic alliances with companies to aid in bringing their vision to fruition. To produce this new tractor line, Kubota has partnered with Versatile. That being said; once I walked around the machine, sat in it, and drove it, I was pleased that this tractor had a very “Kubota feel.”

There are two models that Kubota will offer in this line. The M8-191 and M8-211 and they will have 190 and 210 HP respectively. This will be the largest horsepower tractor that Kubota will have to date. To provide this power, Kubota selected the 6.7 liter, 6 cylinder Cummins engine. This is the first time Kubota has utilized another manufacturer's power plant, however, they did a great job by selecting the most popular and reliable engine that Cummins makes. They also struck an agreement that will allow 8

Kubota M8 dealers to provide service on these engines which is out of the norm for Cummins to allow.

However, Kubota knows the importance of this equipment and how it will be utilized in the market.

Past the engine, the transmission will come in a couple variants. A semi-powershift 30x15 (6Px5S) or a CVT that both will come with the ability to travel at 25 mph standard or optionally at 31 mph when specified accordingly. Behind the transmission will be a very impressive hydraulic package offering. You can have a 3 or 5 remote hydraulic package. The 5 remote package will come with an upgraded pump that will produce an amazing 42 GPM. Operating this giant is done with comfort and style. This tractor has an extremely spacious 4 post cab that offers great visibility. You will have the option of sitting on a leather heated and cooled seat, which I found to be magnificent. It was very nice to see Kubota offering these types of creature comforts.

Kubota has had a reputation of being very well made, but utilitarian. I can speak with confidence that this tractor is breaking that mold.

Speaking to other reputations that Kubota has fought, many people have come to me and said that they felt like past

Kubota M-series tractors were light with respect to raw tonage. We as dealers and operators have been very pleased to see Kubota changing that trend when they released the M7 series, and they are continuing it with the M8 as well. In fact, the M8 will be one of the heaviest tractors in its class, coming in at 20,000 lbs.

When I attended the product launch, I was very pleased with the effort and work Kubota put forth to launch this machine. I could tell that they are doing everything they can to produce this machine the right way. One facet of that thought process is that they are going to launch a small number of these machines into the market when they first release in the first half of 2020. Great Plains Kubota is proud to be one of the selected few dealers to be apart of this initial product launch. I can see how this product will do a great job in rounding out the line up of tractors that Kubota already offers. The product, along with Great Plains Kubota’s commitment to service, is sure to create a very positive impact on customers who are looking to purchase. KUBOTA CONNECT Thinking back on the past Kubota Connect dealer

meetings, it would be hard to say that Kubota has ever had a more exciting exhibit of new products than they had this year. This past October, Kubota rolled out the carpet and a ton of new products and innovations for their dealers at the Gaylord Convention Center in Grapevine, TX. This translates into more options and capabilities to Kubota customers.

The new Kubota M8 received most of the attention, and rightfully so. This is Kubota's biggest tractor to date, and a tractor this size physically demands attention, but it also means big things for agricultural producers!

Perhaps for Great Plains Kubota customers though, the biggest news would be the unveiling of an all new MX-Series line up featuring two models, the MX5400 (55.5HP) and the MX6000 (63.4HP), both of which have cab options. The MX series is somewhat of a hybrid between a compact and utility tractor and has been a perfect sized tractor for Oklahomans.

“The MX Series is really the best of both worlds: its size and maneuverability allow it to fit those larger compact tractor-sized applications, while its power allows it to meet the demands of those smaller utility tractor-sized applications. This tractor is as versatile as it is powerful and ready to work hard all day, every day,” said Kelcey Cockrell, Kubota Assistant Product Manager. “I’m most excited to announce that the MX Series is available with a factory installed cab. The MX cab models really are the total package when it comes to affordability, functionality, performance, comfort and versatility.”

Two other series changes are the B01DT Series and the LX Series, both of which are specific to Kubota's smaller compact tractors. The B01DT Series has increased power and functionality, while the LX Series has completely changed the look and functionality of the previous B2650, B3350, and B3350SUHDs. FOODPLOTS Cooler weather is in the air, and for many of us

that means it’s time to start planning for deer season.

Few things can improve both the health of your local deer herd and the success of your hunting more dramatically than putting in quality food plots. Food plots will help you attract more deer to you property, hold them on your property longer, and add much more nutritional value to the forage that they are consuming on your property. Here is my top tips for better food plots and a healthier deer herd.

1. Start early with a good soil test for each plot.

Contact your local extension service to learn more about soil tests. They will have the equipment you need for a proper soil test and will send your samples off to a laboratory for testing. Once your results are in they will also help you determine the fertilizer requirements for the crops you plan to grow.

2. Plant some nutrition plots and some hunting plots. Keep the hunting plots tucked in near good

bedding cover where an old buck can slip in feeling secure using them in daylight. Make the nutrition ones larger and never hunt over them. Those are great spots for surveying the deer population with trail cameras. Consider the wind, sun direction, and surrounding cover when you plant so you can approach

your hunting plots without being detected. A plot won’t do you any good if you can’t get to it without spooking the deer out.

3. Make sure you kill existing vegetation such as grasses and weeds thoroughly before planting. Spray several times if necessary, using herbicides

such as glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup.

Then disc or till several times to kill remaining vegetation. You can also flip the order and till first, then kill remaining and newly-sprouted vegetation with herbicides.

4. If you use a rotary style mower, you know that grass and weed clippings accumulate on the deck as you mow. What most of us don’t think about is

that these clippings are essentially a “seed bomb” waiting to be deployed. If you’re heading to mow areas that are being used as, or prepared for food plots, do yourself a favor and clean off the mower deck. Otherwise, as the weed cuttings slide or blow off the mower deck, you are effectively seeding the plot with weeds that you will have to fight later.

5. I try not build square or rectangular hunting plots. In fact, irregular shapes are often better.

your plot configuration, you can create funnels and ambush points. I prefer to have multiple small irregular plots around my property as opposed to one large field.

6. If you are on a tight budget or don’t want to break the bank on expensive blends try planting cereal grains such as wheat, rye, and oats. These

grains can be broadcast by hand and will germinate very quickly. Small food plots in the timber can be hard to access with large equipment and these seeds can be planted successfully with minimal tillage if you time your planting just before a good rain.

7. Turnips, rape and radishes become best established when planted in tilled ground so that there is good seed to soil contact. I have had great

success with planting these crops in soils that I do a light single pass tillage with a disc and then just broadcast seed into the rough tilled soil. The small seeds will find their way in the cracks and voids on the soil surface and then subsequent rains will further cover up the seed. These crops need nitrogen and will do best if you apply a good amount of Nitrogen at planting time.

8. Don’t plant too early! It’s tempting to get out GPL Fall 2019

there and plant those fall plots way too early in the year because you want them to be lush and green on opening day. However I have learned over

time that this can be a huge mistake. Waiting until mid to late September has shown much better results.

Planting too early usually means very little rainfall in August and early September. Cereal grains planted too early almost always get destroyed by Army worms. These worms can move in and eat an entire plot before you have time to spray a pesticide.

9. Locate plots where they’re not visible from roads and property boundaries so you don’t tempt neighbors or poachers. This one seems sim-

ple, but it' is really important. Why would you want to do all of the work, and then someone else ruin your chance at a trophy animal?

10. Last but certainly not least be sure to take a kid hunting. It’s our responsibility to teach the

next generation how to carry on with our outdoor lifestyle. Food plots can be some of the best places to take a new hunter out hunting because they have a great chance of seeing lots of deer, turkeys, and other wildlife.

Are You Proud or Humble?

Pride. What comes to mind when you hear that

word? I want to explore a little about pride in the sense that the Bible describes it. Everyone suffers from it to some degree. And when I am writing about pride here, I am not referring to a “satisfaction in your work” or “being proud of a job well done”. No, those things are right and good. What I mean by pride is the arrogant sense that we are better than others and that we have the right to puff our chest out and thumb our nose to other people because of social status, ethnicity, or any other man-made differentiation. God hates that type of pride, and it is very clear throughout His Word that we should keep ourselves from that, and to be humble. God wants us to be humble, and not just to put us down, but to put us in our correct place with Himself and with others around us. Admittedly, humility and the humbling of ourselves in today’s world is not normal, and pride seems to be the flavor of the day.

Our perspective on humility can be radically changed if we will ponder and meditate on the greatest example of humility in history: Jesus Christ. By the very act of leaving heaven, coming to earth, and taking the form of man, he demonstrated an unfathomable humbling of himself. Throughout his life on earth, Jesus demonstrated a spirit of profound humility, saying that he came “not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matt.

20:28). On his last night with the disciples, he took a towel and basin and washed their dirty feet (John 13:1–11), instructing them to follow his example of servanthood with one another (John 13:12–17).

Throughout the Bible we see examples of pride ruining lives, and humility creating harmony. Paul speaks in Philippians 2:5-8 “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking on the form of a servant,

being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” The Bible is encouraging ordinary believers in a local church, who apparently have some measure of sinful pride in their hearts and relationships, to reflect on and adopt the attitude and actions of Jesus their Lord and follow his example of humility.

The consequences of such an attitude may give us pause. Humbling ourselves could be costly in the workplace, in the community, or in other ways. However, that is a shortsighted, worldly perspective. Pride destroys, but humility builds up.

Humbling ourselves places our lives in submission to the One who gave His life for us so that we could bring honor to Him. That is the reason we must humble ourselves.

For this to happen, we need to earnestly and regularly pray for the Holy Spirit to change our hearts, for it is impossible to do it in our own strength. As we pray that God would change our attitudes and the condition of our proud hearts, then we will begin to see relationships strengthened, we will see harmony instead of division, and ultimately we will see God glorified as He should be on this Earth.

Gone But Not Forgotten

The sun is falling on the high desert while a camp-

fire sets a rhythm for the shadows to dance to. It's going to be cold, and Wally and Emma won’t be happy if they don’t have a place to get warm, but this isn’t their first excursion. These Weimaraners know the drill well. Whether it is a long mountain trail to see what's on the other side or a long weekend of bird hunting, Leonard, the dogs, and the Kubota RTV1140 or “Wheeler,” as it’s called, have become old hands at this game. But now there’s a new exciting element about this adventure. The “Wheeler” has seen many trails, but never has it's destination been to seek out ancient petroglyphs left by those who made fire dance eons ago.

Petroglyphs are rock carvings made by etchetch ing directly on a rock surface with

some sort of chisel. After the surface layer of the rock has been chipped away, the lighter rock underneath was exposed, creating what we now call petroglyphs.

Leonard Ketchum is a figure one might use to illustrate what a “cowboy” is to someone if they had never seen one. A long time Great Plains Kubota customer, Leonard recently lead an expedition to ancient sites in northern Nevada. Leonard, Wally, and Emma have been mastering the art of setting up camp for a long time.

tance, and a warm campfire are all a welcome setting to this Oklahoma cattle puncher who grew up in southwestern Oklahoma. In fact, this is the reason he was asked to help lead this little expedition. To give credit, his skill and the versatility of his “wheeler,” caught the eye of a fellow bird hunter, Mike Kiester.

While on a pheasant hunting trip in South Dakota, Kiester spoke of his concern about ancient petroglyphs near northern Nevada that he feared were eroding or in danger of being vandalized. So, a trip was planned in which Leonard and his crew would lead those who would follow to document these drawings for posterity. This was a fascinating opportunity considering these particular petroglyphs are the oldest in North America.

Now, the campfire is smoldering and the sun's first rays are peaking over the mountain, highlighting a rocky skeleton of what was once a great lake.

A people, long gone, use to call this place home and sustained themselves from the life giving waters. But that was 7,000 years ago. All that remains now are their expressions in the stone.

from the actual petroglyphs in an area that isn’t accessible by normal vehicles. This desert is a formidable place which is why the durability of the Kubota was needed to aid in traveling to this remote destination.

However, this desert and the fast expansion of unforgivable terrain wasn’t enough to keep the Oklahoma cowboy at bay. The trip ended in success and these pictures are just small window of the adventure that Leonard, Emma, Wally and the "Wheeler" experienced. Leonard, along with many other Great Plains Kubota customers depend on utility vehicles daily for tasks.

It's funny how the many threads in the fabric of our lives intertwine with others from very different walks of life. It's not everyday that an Oklahoma cowboy and his weimaraners set a course to detail the remnants of ancient civilizations. Just as it’s our pleasure to get to share this story that our friend Leonard took part in. It’s comforting to know that the machines and equipment we offer are up to such tasks, and that customers like Leonard trust and rely on them. A great thanks to Leonard and the dogs for allowing us to share.

ABNEY LAND SOLUTIONSQ&A GPL: How long has Richard Abney been providing land solutions?

ALS: I’ve been clearing and reclaiming land since 2015.

GPL: How many employees do you have?

ALS: Just me at this time, I’m looking to add at least one employee in the future.

GPL: What areas do you provide service?

ALS: I will travel statewide for the right job, however my main area of business is central Oklahoma.

GPL: What is the biggest job you've done with your Kubota equipment?

ALS: The single biggest job was over 160 acres and I partnered with my best friend Ryan Tackett of RKT Farms to develop new home lots in OKC. GPL: What was your favorite job in which you used your Kubota equipment?

ALS: They all become my favorite once you see the end result and final transformation.

GPL: What type of Kubota equipment do you have?

ALS: I run a SVL-95 everyday, but I’ve rented several different Kubota mini excavators over the years.

GPL: What do you like best about your SVL? ALS: I like the roomy cab and the overhead door the most. My service department takes good care of me.

GPL: What do you like least about your SVL? ALS: I would say the dust issues, due to maybe poor sealing around the door, and the lack of gauges.

GPL: What made you want to get into the land management?

ALS: I saw the need for vegetation management in our state. The invasive cedar tree population is out of control. Wildfire fuel management is a big issue, just look at what is happening in California right now.

GPL: When is your busy time of year?

ALS: I’m usually busy year around. Rainy weather has it's effects and deer season slows me down.

GPL: Where do you see Abney Land Solutions in the next decade?

ALS: I see growth with the changing industry, and expanding to more equipment and employees.

GPL: If you could have any piece of equipment what would it be?

ALS: I have a long list of equipment I want!

ALS: I really enjoy operating a skid loader.

GPL: What all attachments do you utilize?

ALS: On a daily basis I run a drum style forestry mulcher, tree shear, brush mower, and grapple bucket.

I also use a stump bucket, rock bucket, pallet forks, auger, dirt bucket, disc mulcher, and Marshall saw.

GPL: What other equipment do you utilize?

ALS: Whatever it takes to provide the service that the customer needs.

GPL: How did you get started?

ALS: I quit my full time job that I worked at for 20 years and rolled the dice! I have a great wife that stands behind me and support my decisions. It hasn’t been easy, and this industry isn’t for the faint of heart.

Word of

the Year

The local John Deere dealership that my son and

I sometimes frequent had a nice display of gun safes in their front lobby. I had not previously noticed that John Deere was in the safe business, but there was a great selection in all colors and sizes with variations of the famous John Deere logo across the front. As I expressed an interest in one of the safes, I asked the sales representative, “How much?” He quoted me what seemed to be a good price and then added what he thought would be a little extra incentive. He stated that he would list the safe on the invoice as an “air compressor” so that I could write the expense off my taxes. Though tempted, I looked at my young son and replied, “We would not be comfortable with the invoice not being truthful.” I thought it was important to include my son in the decision. The sales representative’s response was interesting in that he stated, “Everyone else does it. What’s the harm? We do it all the time.” It would have been so easy to take the bait and send my son the wrong message regarding integrity.

Along a similar but more painful path, one of my clients recently bought a load of Holstein springers.

As they began to calve, all of the offspring were bull calves. In that group of springing heifers, we also experienced an exceptionally high incidence of twins.

The “invoice” in this instance stated that they were all checked, guaranteed bred and safe with calf. It was true that the heifers were checked pregnant, but an additional twist was that they were also sexed and checked for twins via ultrasound. Obviously the heifers were sorted, so guess which group arrived at the 24

dairy? When confronted, the seller was very defensive and evasive. His final response was, “Well, I don’t know what could have happened, but you know that I would never cheat you!”

It is interesting to note how many people’s lives are personally and professionally incongruent in regard to truth telling. I have known cattle buyers who could be trusted with a $250,000 check and professionally account for every penny. But in their personal life, they could not be trusted with $10 worth of beer money.

C.S. Lewis famously stated, “Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” If you are one who desires to be a man or woman of integrity, here is the final exam: What do you do or how do you respond when no one else knows your actions?

Truth and integrity are codependent. Is a little white lie like the air compressor invoice or a more layered deception like the heifers really that big of a deal?

According to the Oxford Dictionary the answer to that question is “not really”. Each year, the Oxford Dictionary selects a word that reflects the consensus and condition of our culture. The Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year in 2016 was “post-truth”. Post-truth is defined as “...circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than are emotion and personal belief." This culture-defining “word of the year” is stating that in essence truth, as we knew it, is dead. This “new” truth in the 21st century is not based on facts or reality, but rather on public opinion and emotion much like the trial and crucifixion of Christ. Now we know why “fact-based”

science and the scientific method has been thrown in the dumpster. In some respects, look no further for examples than climate change, EPA regulations and the current settlement surrounding the herbicide Roundup®. This also brings insight into better understanding our current chaotic political environment including presidential elections, Supreme Court nominations and Special Council Russian collusion investigations. Now it becomes more obvious why anarchy or lawlessness seems to be on the increase and law enforcement and our military are often harassed, hamstrung or forced to “stand down”.

Truth, absolute truth, is an attribute of the essence and character of God himself. Truth always begins and ends with our Creator. The Bible constantly speaks to the sanctity of truth and notes that lying is part of our fallen nature. Satan has been identified as a “liar“ and “the father of lies”. This then clearly shows us that the opposite of truth is not holy. It is paramount that we not only speak the truth, but that we live it out daily as well.

Standing for truth, God’s absolute truth, will get you noticed but not always in a positive way. History is full of individuals who have stood firm and not denied the truth or the faith. Our country is currently becoming more divided, hateful and violent. At the bottom of this cultural rot, one will discover that the necessary foundation or cornerstone of truth is being eaten away by feelings, emotions and other politicallycorrect termites. This is why we should not be surprised to learn that the culturally-defining Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year for 2018 was “toxic”.

It is easy to see that we are rapidly moving in the wrong direction. Currently the scoreboard looks like we are falling behind at half time with seemingly very little depth on our bench. However, the good news in this truth battle is that the One who identified himself as “The Truth” is for us and has not left us as orphans. He has sent a helper, the “Spirit of Truth”, to teach, guide and strengthen us. As deceit, lies, public opinion and other forms of “post-truth” seek to come against us, stand firm knowing that with Christ at our side, we are on the winning team, no matter the odds.

1 Skillet Beefy 7-Layer Dip INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

1. 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 2. 1/2 cup diced sweet onion 3. 2 tablespoons reduced-fat dairy sour cream 4. 1 tablespoon tomato paste 5. 1 cup diced, seeded tomatoes 6. 1 can (15 ounces) no-salt added black beans, rinsed and drained 7. 1/2 cup frozen corn 8. 1 can (4oz) diced mild green chiles 9. 2 fresh jalapeno peppers, trimmed, seeded and diced 10. 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro 11. 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 12. 1/2 teaspoon chile powder 13. 1 1/2 cups reduced-fat shredded Mexican Blend Cheese 14. 1 lb. of Mexican Style Beef Sausage

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Heat large oven-proof non-stick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add oil and onion; cook 5 min., until onions are soft. Add Mexican-style beef sausage mixture; cook 8-10 min., breaking beef into 1/2 crumbles and stirring occasionally. Remove skillet from heat. Stir in sour cream and tomato paste.

Flaky Beef-Stuffed Pinwheels

Cook's Tip: Mexican-Style Beef Sausage: Combine 1 pound Ground Beef (93% lean or leaner), 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, 1-1/2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves, 1-1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika, 1-1/2 teaspoons chile powder, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chile powder in large bowl, mixing lightly but thoroughly.

3. Top beef with tomatoes, beans, corn, chiles, jalapeno peppers and cilantro. Sprinkle mixture with cumin and chile powder; top with cheese.

4. Bake in 350F° oven 20 minutes or until cheese has melted and starting to brown. Remove skillet from oven.

5. Garnish with squeeze of lime, as desired. Serve with chips or tortillas, as desired.

INGREDIENTS 1. 1 Package (16-24 ounces) fully cooked boneless beef pot roast with gravy 2. 1/2 cup shredded Asiago cheese 3. 1 package (17.3) frozen puff pastry (2 sheets), defrosted 4. 4 green onions, cut in half lengthwise, then cut into long thin strips

DIRECTIONS 1. Heat beef pot roast with gravy in microwave according to package directions. Shred pot roast in large bowl; stir in cheese. Set aside.

2. Heat oven to 400 degrees, spray 2 metal baking sheets with nonstick cooking spray. Unfold each putt pastry sheet onto lightly floured surface.

3. Cut each sheet in half with sharp knife to make four 10x4 3/4 inch rectangles. Working with 1 rectangle at a time, place a long side in front of you. Place 1/4 of the green onion strips lengthwise over beef mixture. Roll up pastry jelly-roll fashion starting with long side opposite to you. Brush water along border and seal pastry. Repeat with remaining pastry, beef mixture, and green onions.

4. Cut pastry rolls crosswise into 1/2 inch thick slices, forming pinwheels. Arrange 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheets.

Bake in 400 degree oven 15-17 min. or until golden brown, rotating pans halfway through baking. Transfer pinwheels to wire rack; cool slightly. Serve warm.
