2016 Oklahoma Beef Quality Assurance Awards Announced Clark Ranch of Ada, Oklahoma and Robert Wells of the Noble Foundation

T

he Oklahoma Beef Council recently announced the winners of the 2016 Oklahoma Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Awards. Bill Clark of the Rising Sun Ranch in Ada, Oklahoma was named Producer of the Year and Dr. Robert Wells of the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation was named Educator of the Year. The Oklahoma Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program is a program designed to help maximize consumer confidence and acceptance of beef by focusing producers’ attention to daily production practices that influence the safety, wholesomeness, and quality of beef and beef products. Every year the Oklahoma Beef Council recognizes those that demonstrate outstanding BQA principles on their farms and ranches, or those who’ve dedicated their time and effort to ensure the success of the state’s BQA program.

The 2016 winner of the BQA Educator of the Year was Dr. Robert Wells of the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. According to Tom Fanning, chairman of the Oklahoma Beef Council and a feed-yard manager from May, Oklahoma, “BQA training would not happen without the initiative and dedication of Oklahoma trainers such as Dr. Wells. We are fortunate to have him and his leadership as part of our BQA team.”

The winner of the Oklahoma BQA Producer of the Year was Bill Clark of the Rising Sun Ranch in Ada,

Oklahoma, which is predominately a commercial cow-calf ranch consisting of commercial Angus cows.

This ranch leads by example with BQA principles and practices woven into nearly everything they do. According to Bill, “We manage our ranch based upon BQA principles because it is the right thing to do for our cattle, it is the right thing to do for the ranch, and ultimately it is the right thing to do for the consumer of the beef we produce.”

The Oklahoma Beef Council is funded by Oklahoma’s beef producers through the Beef Checkoff which was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The Beef Checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products.

States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program and is subject to USDA approval. The mission of the Oklahoma Beef Council is to create a more profitable future for Oklahoma’s farming and ranching families through building beef demand.

WildCat Springs Where The Deer And Buffalo Roam And You Can Play

T

he interview with Jarrett Williamson, Manager of Wildcat Springs Ranch began like any other minus the Zebras.

Wildcat Springs Ranch is a hunting ranch located just south of Fittstown, Okla., a geographic area of the state known for it’s rocky terrain, crystal clear springs, and it’s quality and quantity of wild game to hunt. It was late September, but the morning was still cool and there was game running everywhere, which as a hunter, made it hard to focus on the task at hand. As ranch manager, Williamson is accustom to giving ranch tours, servicing clients, and ensuring the best possible trip to the ranch as possible. Williamson was content to drive around the huge property all day discussing his passion for guiding and hunting, but I wasn’t there to sight see. I wanted to find out what made this highfence hunting paradise different from all the rest, and that’s exactly what I found out after touring the rustic terrain that made up the expansive landscape of the ranch.

The ranch sign which reads, “Billy D. Howell’s Wildcat Springs Ranch” resembles many iron constructed ranch gates, but as the gate opened, and I drove towards the ranch lodge I realized this gate was an entrance to an entirely different type of ranch. It was late in the morning and yet there were whitetail deer on the move just within a few hundred yards of the gate.

Needless to say I couldn’t wait to see what else this hidden gem had to offer.

Tucked away in the eastern part of the Arbuckle Mountains, Wildcat Springs offers almost 8,000 acres of prime hunting and fishing land that is fueled by an endless aquifer that supports the wildlife of the ranch. It’s private and secluded, yet it’s just short drive from two major cities, Dallas and Oklahoma City. Steep hills and expansive views can be expected as can quality game animals like elk, buffalo, deer, hog, turkey, Aoudad sheep, and other exotics. The wide range of game animals are managed year round by a full-time staff of seven employees in order to provide hunters the highest quality of trophy animals available. The ranch also features spring fed lakes stocked with bass, crappie, catfish, and even walleye. One of the bigger watersheds is an impressive 40 feet deep in places. At Wildcat Springs Ranch guests create custom hunts to fit their preferences and budgets, but regardless the hunt, it’s always an experience to remember.

Hunting One of the things that makes this hunting ranch stand out from others is the surprising low amount of hunting pressure it has. Wildcat Spring would exist as is, without serving a single hunting client. That being said there’s anywhere from 60 - 80 clients that hunt GPL Fall 2016

each year. The fully guided hunting trips offer a variety of tactics and methods of hunting. You can hunt from a heated blinds or spot and stalk more elusive game like the Aoudad sheep. With over 35 miles of high fencing there is a hunt that can be tailored for everyone. In addition to your hunt there is on site processing and taxidermist available for your trophy.

Fishing Guests looking to get away and spend the day on the water while catching truly big fish have found the right place with this ranch. The trophy fishing lakes are complete with fishing docks and boat ramps, and vary in size and types of fish offered. The water and underground springs are one of the more interesting features about this ranch. The Arbuckle

Aquifer has been a topic of much debate in recent years, and one can easily see why when fishing on such quality waters as what is available on this ranch.

Lodging Excellent lodging and accommodations are what you’ll have after a full day of being outdoors. Speaking from experience, clean and comfortable accommodations can make or break a hunt. Before heading out to explore the ranch further we passed an old Kubota, which, at first glance appeared to be sitting idle, but Williamson quickly referred to the late model Kubota as “ole reliable,” and Williamson should know as he is no stranger to benefits of good equipment. He has years of experience operating and maintaining equipment, and when asked what he liked best about the Kubotas they use at Wildcat Springs Ranch Williamson said this: “Everything is right there where you can get to it.

They are easy to operate, but most of all they are reliable tractors. We use a lot of different machines out here but we can always count on the Kubotas.”

After touring several large bottoms and passing multiple lakes we began to make our accent towards an elevated part of the ranch where the buffalo roam. We pulled up to a Kubota M9960 hard at work discing up a rocky field to prepare a food plot. This year alone, Williamson and his team will plant over 650 acres of food plots. There are a lot of different things that make this ranch special, but when you break it all down, its really about the thrill of the hunt. So when I asked Williamson what hunt provides clients with the best overall experience, Williamson could only talk about the buffalo. Their size alone make them a difficult animal to hunt, and with options ranging from trophy bulls, to meat cows, hunters have different choices and methods to hunt them. The meat alone would be a reason for me to hunt them. There something about this animal that ties it with our nation’s wild past. They are the very hide of the American West’s history. From Native Americans, to the expansion of the railways, the American Bison has always been a symbolic animal of wild America. Native Americans wasted no part of this huge animal, and if given the chance I would do the same. The trophy, meat, even the hide could all still serve a purpose to the modern hunter. Williamson enjoys guiding these hunts because he feels they provide clients with much more than just a thrilling hunt.

Last year I guided a buffalo hunt where, after being shot, the bull charged several times. It was thrilling and rewarding to both myself and the client.”

all is upon us here in Oklahoma, and with that brings cooler temperatures and shorter days. Fall is a time of harvest for many of our customers who are farmers and ranchers, and harvest generally means opportunity.

Harvest brings an opportunity for producers and their families to gather together and reap the benefits of a season of labor and toil. No matter whether you have a small operation, or a large operation - a time of harvest brings accomplishment and satisfaction for a job well done.

There is a more important harvest, however, that we must consider an opportunity for us. A harvest that 18

has an eternal significance instead of just seasonal.

Harvest is spoken of in the Bible in several places. The first place that comes to mind is in John 4:35 where Jesus says “Lift up your eyes and see that the fields are white for harvest.” This is a reference to whenever cotton fields would bloom and all you could see is the white tops of the cotton head. But that reference is a symbolic one. Jesus is really referring to the many people out there that are looking for a savior in all the wrong places. Just look around you right now and you will see so many people seeking satisfaction, seeking happiness, seeking peace, but they are unable to find it in what our world has to offer.

There is only one place that we can truly find that deep soul-satisfying satisfaction and contentment and that is in a relationship with Jesus Christ. We are all sinners by birth and by nature, and Jesus died on a cross to provide a pardon for the sin that we have committed. But there is a requirement on our part. We must repent, turn from our sin, and accept His salvation that He so freely offers. I want you to know that His offer applies to you today if you will accept it.

So, what does this mean for us who are already Christians? It means that we are to go into the fields

and seek those who don’t know Jesus yet, to search for those who are seeking for fulfillment in all the wrong places.

Matthew 9:37 says “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.”

So, I would ask you this fall to consider working in the fields for a more significant harvest, an eternal harvest. There are many souls to reach, and only a few people working in the fields. Make this fall a productive one!

George Cramer Great Plains Ada

I

f you own a Kubota from Great Plains Ada chances are it was assembled by George Cramer. Over the years George Cramer has refined and perfected the art of assembling the various equipment sold at Great Plains Kubota. Starting for the company in the summer of 2010 Cramer has seen many changes overtime, but one thing has always remained. His ability to assemble and “PDI” equipment has set standards throughout the company.

Cramer has assembled hundreds of pieces of equipment, and although getting equipment ready to sell is his primary duty at Great Plains, Cramer has assisted in all aspects of the service department including training other assembly techs. It’s hard for him to pin-point what his favorite task or piece of equipment to assemble is, but he did note that some pieces are more rewarding than others. The bigger, more complex equipment provides him with a great since of accomplishment.

The majority of his assembly tasks are made up of Kubota equipment, which is good because he finds these models to be more streamlined to put together. He commented on Kubota manufacturing: “Everything seems to match up on Kubota. This hole matches up with that hole and so on. I’ve put a lot of different things together, but Kubota is manufactured the best.”

Cramer’s work bay at the new Ada dealership is much larger than his old one. He doesn’t miss his old work station on Broadway which he noted is where they stored the Pure Prairie Creamery cheese during the cold months. Before coming to Great Plains he was the manager at Allen Feed for three years.

He can usually be seen driving his white Nissan pickup on Hwy 1 from Allen to work every day, but during the warmer months you’ll find Cramer riding his Honda Shadow motorcycle. Cramer lives in Allen, OK with his wife and their youngest child who’s a senior at Allen High School. Their oldest child is attending OCU. When he’s not at work Cramer enjoys being outdoors, which aids in his success as an assembly tech because he spends a lot of time in the elements. He’s a hard working employee that does well at anything assigned to him, and Great Plains is thankful and lucky to have George Cramer as their lead Assembly Tech.

Efficient Cow/Calf Production Success Starts With Quality Forage

H

ow do you measure success in the beef cattle business? Many times, I see producers try to squeeze the economic side so tight they don’t spend enough money to make money. The other side is supplying so much input that you can’t make a profit from that side either. So, figuring out that optimal efficient cow versus calf production is important.

The first condition necessary for efficient cow/calf production is high quality forage. The largest proportion of a cow’s nutrient needs, throughout her lifetime, are supplied by forage. Consequently, we should take steps to optimize the production of high quality forage from our land. Optimization means that we use and improve our forage resources within environmental and economic constraints. Correct grazing rates are an important part of improving forage. In Pontotoc County, a cow unit on native grass requires about 7-9 acres, depending upon grass quality and how much is wooded. Unfertilized Bermuda is similar at 7-9 acres, while fertilized Bermuda will be 4-6 acres depending upon amount of nitrogen applied.

With an appropriate forage base, the next step is to select beef cows that efficiently utilize the available forage. Cow type (breed, size, milking ability) has a significant effect on the quantity of nutrients that a cow must consume. For example, large-framed, high milking cows grazing native grass in winter would be extremely deficient in protein and energy. These cows would require large quantities of supplemental feed to maintain productivity. The opposite situation exists with small-framed, low milking cows grazing high quality forages such as wheat or fescue. The forage would likely provide excess nutrients that would

be essentially wasted. Consequently, producers who can match the appropriate cow type with their forage resource should have the best opportunity for economic success. Output from a cow/calf operation is measured as the economic value of weaned calves plus the value of cull heifers and cows. The economic value of a weaned calf is determined by the weight of the calf and the selling price. As with forage, maximum economic return usually does not coincide with maximum weaning weight.

Weaning weight does not account for reproductive efficiency. A more appropriate method to evaluate cow/calf productivity would be to divide the total pounds of calf weaned by the number of cows exposed to a bull. This combines the weaning weight of the calf with the success of your breeding program. To increase this number, we must produce appropriately large calves and successfully breed most of our cows.

Economically efficient calving rates usually exceed 90%. To calve 90% of your cows that are exposed to a bull, the nutrient requirements of your cows must be satisfied. Some producers accomplish this with high quality forage programs. Others utilize large quantities of supplemental feed. Consequently, high calving rates do not insure economic success. Some herds with 90% plus calving rates are economically inefficient because of large economic inputs.

Achieving an efficient cow/calf program requires an understanding of the characteristics of beef cows and their nutritional needs, the ability of forages to meet the nutritional needs of beef cows and the ability of supplemental feeds to fill the gap between cow needs and forage nutrient supply.

n line with North American strategic growth initiatives, Kubota has secured its purchase of Great Plains Manufacturing Inc. Great Plains is the parent company of long-time Kubota alliance partner, Land Pride. Easier Access Makes New GP Shawnee Location a Welcomed Sight To Customers

pinions from Great Plains Shawnee employees give insight to the relocating of the long standing Kubota dealership in Shawnee, Okla. GPL asked a few quick questions to learn the nuts and bolts, and what it will mean for customers. Great Plains Shawnee opened at the new location on October 3rd and is now serving their customers full time at the new location.

Brenda Birkle (Parts/Service) - What does this relocation mean to you and your daily operations? The layout of the new store will make the parts room more efficient, therefore my daily operations will be more streamlined, and ultimately better for customers.

Service Techs - What do you like best about moving to the new location? What will it offer you that you don’t have now? Better organization and easier accessed service bays.

Parts - How will moving to the new location help your parts department? Traffic flow will move faster and customers will be able to get their parts quicker.

Garrett Clark (Store Manager) - How will you utilize the new location to its maximum potential? The new store located on 177 has great accessibility so customers can shop our inventory which will be fully displayed and at the utmost capacity.

Bill Clark (President) - What is the most important thing about this relocation? It’s all about customer convenience. Now it will be easy in and easy out. In the past it could be difficult to navigate our narrow parking lot. Now there is plenty of space.

Chase Cain (Cain Construction) - As the builder what is best feature of this new store?

I think the orientation of the setup and how it utilizes the space is the best feature.

Keith Ward - What’s the most important factor about moving to this new location from a sales point of view? Visibility should increase traffic and we’ll have more room and more inventory to choose from.

GP New emPloyees Bill Hendon joined the Great Plains Duncan sales team a couple months ago. Since then his ten years experience as an Operations Manager in the oil industry, along with his equipment rental experience has made him a valuable employee. He’s a well rounded salesman and tries to make the most out of every customer relationship.

Craig Whipple is no stranger to equipment maintenance and repair. As the new Service Coordinator for Great Plains Ada, Craig brings 18 years of equipment maintenance to the GP family. He’s a self proclaimed “Jack of All Trades” that exhibits a keen ability to understand what needs to be done. He’s loving his new position and the multitasking opportunities it’s offering him.

Stephen Dryden has been a Service Tech in Ada since May. His father was a diesel mechanic so he’s been around service work his entire life.

Adam Baxter has been a tech for GP since last October so he isn’t exactly new, but neither are his skills at mechanic work. Adam has worked as a mechanic for as long as he can remember.

Casey Wolfe is a fulltime sales intern at GP Duncan. Casey and his wife are both active military personnel stationed in Ft. Sill.

He’s done three tours in Afghanistan, but his agricultural roots stemmed from his family farm in Kansas are what drive Casey to seek a career in equipment sales.

Tony Breedlove is putting his sales and service skills to work as the new Service Coordinator at Great Plains Edmond.

Tony brings four years experience from a New Holland dealer in Texas.

THE CODE Ride For The Brand

T

he term “brand” goes back thousands of years and originally meant “to burn”. To the cowboy of the American West, the “brand” not only identified the ownership of cattle, but it also became the symbol of loyalty, pride, and commitment. Some people credit Louis L’amour for coming up with the term “Ride for the Brand,” but I can imagine some cow boss telling a slacker hired hand cowboy that if he wasn’t going to “Ride for the Brand,” he might as well hit the trail. It was his way of communicating that if he wasn’t going to work hard, take pride in his work, and be loyal to his employer, then he didn’t need to be working there. Riding for the brand was, and is a great way to sum up a how to have a good employee/employer relationship, but the phrase can be applied in a number of ways.

As an equipment dealer, we are proud of our brand .

We are constantly working to build the reputation of .

We brand our caps, tractors, uniforms, buildings, advertising, and just about anything we can think of that is related to Great Plains.

We are also proud of the brands we represent, and “Ride for those Brands” each

and every time we open our doors. Our goal is to communicate to our customers through our actions that is the “Brand to Ride With”.

As a Christian, “Riding for the Brand” is really summed up in a scripture that I should remember every day. Colossians 3:23 says.

“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.”

My goal in life is to ride for the and even though I make many mistakes, fall off my horse, and disappoint my Heavenly Father, I hope that at the end of the day, people will see by my actions that I belong to Jesus.

In my opinion, the best example of a person “Riding for the Brand” occurred a couple of thousand years ago, long before the cowboy rode the range on the Great Plains. The apostle Paul was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, whipped and imprisoned numerous times and said in Galatians 6:17 that “I bear on my body the scars that show that I belong to Jesus”.

Isn’t that what a “brand” is?
