- Jumping The Gun I will admit that we may have jumped the gun when trying to make Great Plains living strictly an online magazine.

Due to certain factors at the time we felt like it was our best option to continue, but after the overwhelming response and concern of our readers we’ve decided that distributing our publication the way we’ve always done is the only option. GPL will continue to be direct mailed and rack distributed across the counties we serve, and I have to say I’m glad. People say that print is a dying medium. However, based on the response of GPL readers I would have to disagree.

I would like to take this time to thank all of our readers who make our magazine possible. Like our Kubota dealerships, you are the driving force behind our business. This being said, I encourage our readers to send any and all feedback or story ideas so that we can personalize our magazine even more. Fall Cover Crops

F

all is a great time to begin to think about planting a cover crop in what will soon be dormant warm season grasses. Cover crops have been used for a long time in Oklahoma and many people are seeing quite a few benefits from using them. Some of the benefits are reduced soil erosion, reduced runoff of moisture, reduction in pest numbers, improvement in soil and water quality, improvement in soil fertility by adding nutrients back into the soil, and last but not least the additional forage for grazing.

If a successful cover crop is to be established, some preparation will be required. Time should be spent insuring the soil is properly prepared for the crop. The first thing that needs to be done is a soil test should be ran to see what the levels of fertility are in the soil.

In small locations of 30 acres or less, one soil sample, consisting of about 20 cores 6 inches deep, will suffice.

This sample can be labeled and brought to your local county extension office. The cost of these samples are $10.00 per sample and they will tell you the pH level, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium levels in that soil. If legumes are to be planted know the pH and phosphorus levels are very important, because if they are inadequate you will not get good seed germination or stand development.

The next thing is seedbed preparation. Most any seed can be broadcast, but you will see much better returns on your money if the soil is prepared and the seed is drilled. This can be accomplished by disking the soil to destroy any existing forage or weeds. It may require multiple passes over the land to achieve the proper type of soil conditions. This is also a good time to apply fertilizer or lime if needed so it can be worked into the soil. Once you are satisfied with the condition of the seedbed, the ground should be packed to insure a firm seedbed is in place. This can be checked by 6

walking across the field. If your foot prints do not sink over ½” then you have achieve a firm seedbed.

At this point the seed can be drilled into the seedbed. A seed drill provides more exact seed placement, which usually results in a better crop stand. A good rule of thumb is to never plant the seed over 1 ½ times the diameter of the seed. Most seed will be planted from one inch or less. If time does not allow for the construction of a seedbed there are many no-till drills out there that can perform much of the preparation and planting in one pass. No-till planting has several benefits, one of which is a minimal disturbance of the soil. This results in fewer weed seeds germinating.

Also soil is less susceptible to erosion. Most of these operations will require the use of a tractor, but there are getting to be several options out there that use an ATV to accomplish working up and planting food plots.

There are a variety of cool-season cover crops that can be planted that will be attractive to a variety of wildlife species. A partial list is Oats, Red Clover, Annual Ryegrass, Rye, Turnips, Wheat, Crimson Clover, Arrowleaf Clover, Hairy Vetch, Austrian Winter Peas, Radishes, Canola, and White Clover. Most of these can normally be planted during the months of September to Mid-November. Some of the warm season crops are Alfalfa, Corn, Cowpeas, Grain Sorghum, Japanese Millet, Sunflower, and Soybeans. These warm season crops are normally planted from April until June. A combination of both warm and cool-season plants will help to insure your animals have a food source for a majority of the year. When planting a cover crop, seek to use a combination of different types of plants. This practice will create a diversity for the animals as well as provide a wider range of benefits to you.

E

very hunter dreams of harvesting a trophy whitetail.

For Daniel McVay of Buckventures Outdoors, harvesting mature whitetails is his business, and last fall business was booming.

As Land Manager for the popular hunting shows Major League Bowhunter and Buckventures Outdoors one could say that it’s in McVay’s job description to really know the deer on the properties he manages. So when a small two year old buck on their ranch in Northwestern Okla., later named “Freak”, exploded into a 170 inch three year old, McVay gave him his full attention.

“When Freak first came under the radar we knew he wasn’t showing up on a lot of other properties. In fact, the first time he was seen on the hoof was during a hunt with Realtree when Freak was an impressive three year old.

Our own Jeff Danker was running camera when Freak strutted by at 15 yards that day. It was this encounter that made us aware of how special a deer he really was. It was also a perfect demonstration of how letting deer grow can pay off,” said McVay. For some hunters a 170” deer is a deer of a lifetime, and a lot of people wouldn’t have thought twice about drawing down on him at that range. But hard work, and the vast understanding of their present populations paid off for McVay a season later. It was decided early in the 2014 hunting season that Freak was on the hit list. There were several hunts dedicated to Freak that season, and even Realtree came back for another round. Freak remained unscathed until that November when McVay traveled to the panhandle ranch. McVay had made this trip many times, but this would be his first time to actually hunt this property. It was a hot calm day on November 5th, that he would harvest the biggest buck of his life.

McVay described the hunt. “To be honest I didn’t have the highest hopes of getting a shot at Freak. The setup I had was perfect for a North wind, and in fact we see better movement out there when there is more wind. But this day was hot, so I was excited when I finally started to see some activity. There was a smaller buck and a few does around the tree line we were hunting which is situated between two windmills. I noticed a larger buck by one windmill in the distance. Then the deer around us reacted to something coming. All of a sudden I noticed a mess of thick antlers peaking over the brush and heading our way.

I knew immediately it was Freak.”

Freaky story

As one could imagine, the sight of such a magnificent deer had McVay’s blood boiling. But, as a seasoned hunter he remained focused and true to form. When Freak closed the gap to within 40 yards, he patiently waited for a closer shot. Although he thought this may have been a huge mistake, the monster deer had noticed the other buck in the area and had made it his duty to see him out. Luckily for McVay, patience and dedication to the sport came full circle 25 minutes later when Freak showed up trailing a doe. This time the deer wouldn’t have a second chance.

At 30 yards McVay stopped the deer and let an arrow rip.

The shot was low, and caused concern until they reviewed the footage later that night. The video footage revealed a hit that, while on the low side could still produce a mortal wound. Based on what they’d seen they waited until midnight to hopefully retrieve the deer. To McVay’s relief Freak had expired relatively close to where they last lost visual, and until that moment, this prime example of God’s creations, had hardly been seen in person. McVay described he’s reaction.

“We knew he was big but we never thought he would gross over 200 points. It was overwhelming to put my hands on him. I was so nervous he would be gone forever after shooting a little low. After it was all done I couldn’t help but reflect on all the work it took to get to that point.”

These two hunting shows operate by understanding their herds. They feed in volumes, but they do so for inventory purposes rather than to kill. They also rely on trail cameras. In fact, McVay mentioned he knows at least 80% of the population of the deer on the ranch in Oklahoma. He utilizes 60 cameras and of these there’s only one that has produced a picture of buck he doesn’t recognize. McVay also puts a Kubota RTV X series to work on the properties he manages.

“I use the RTV all the time. It makes all the difference when working in tight places or setting stands. I don’t have a single camera I can’t access without the RTV. It’s a workhorse and its the perfect utility vehicle for me as Land Manager,” he said.

When asked what advice he’d give to hunters seeking their buck of a lifetime he said, “let them grow.”

“Always hunt the wind and always have good access to your spot. Access is everything.”

Access may be a key to success, but hard work throughout the season has it’s rewards.

Great Plains Edmond - A Kubota Benchmark -

ith the opening of Great Plains Edmond came a whole new level of growth and opportunity for Great Plains Kubota. It also meant a whole new level of responsibility. The high profile location of Great Plains Edmond on I-35 and in a metropolitan area, meant that the new dealership must continue to positively represent Kubota Tractor Corporation in every aspect. From their founding principals, to the functionality of their sales, service, parts, and rental departments Great Plains Kubota has strived to be a model dealership for Kubota Tractor Corporation.

Recently Kubota has recognized Great Plains Kubota as a premier dealership, and with the services of Bob Clements of Bob Clements International, Kubota will be featuring the Edmond dealership as a benchmark dealership for training purposes. As an industry leader in helping agricultural and other dealerships improve profitability and efficiency, Bob Clements is working closely with Kubota and its Dealer Development Group to improve Kubota dealerships throughout the nation. Clements currently works with over 200 various dealerships in the U.S., and both he and Kubota agreed that Great Plains Edmond would be the model dealership to be featured in its turf market dealer training videos.

The group is focusing on the turf market, and its goal is to help define the best practices among its turf dealer networks.

Clements shot footage at Great Plains Edmond for several different videos that would feature the important aspects of the sales, service, and parts departments. Much like the construction industry, the turf market requires a well stocked parts department to meet the high demands of its customers, as well as an aggressive service department, and a measure of communication amongst the local turf industry. Great Plains Edmond has all the right features Clements and Kubota were looking for. Clements elaborated on why Great Plains Edmond was chosen.

“What this training is about is finding ways to improve the customer experience at Kubota dealerships. After all, Kubota only gets to be Kubota if the dealers do the right thing. The environment and services at Great Plains already offer the “wow” factor that customers are looking for. From our perspective, Great Plains Edmond is the ideal location not only because all the elements of an exploratory turf dealer were in place, but because they’re great to work with. We easily worked around them to shoot our videos during a regular work day. I consult with over 200 types of dealerships and Great Plains Kubota is as professional as they come,” said Clements.

Much like the dealer development group Great Plains Kubota itself is constantly criticizing and refining its own practices to improve customers’ experiences. The future awaits for Great Plains Kubota, and customers can anticipate many new things to come.

The Canteen

Save yourself from the travesties of a bland bird this holiday season. Instead try this tasty twist on venison. Follow the steps below to make this inexpensive, but luxurious meal for friends and family.

Espresso-rubbed Venison Tenderloin with Black Garlic, Juniper Red Wine Sauce Caramelized Cipollini Red Onions, Braised Carrots and Heirloom Apples, and Roasted Fingerling Potatoes Ingredients:

Espresso-rubbed Venison: 1 Venison Tenderloin or Backstrap • 1/3 c Espresso Beans • 1 Tbs Whole Black Pepper • 1/2 Tbs Whole Allspice • 1 tsp Sea Salt Black Garlic, Juniper Red Wine Sauce: 3 Cloves Black Garlic • 1/2 tsp Juniper Berries • 1 large Shallot, minced • 2 cups Red Wine • 1 packet Brown Gravy Mix • 1 Tbs Olive Oil • 3 Tbs Honey • 2 Tbs Brown Sugar Caramelized Cipollini Red Onions: 1 lb Cipollini Red Onions • 2 Tbs Unsalted Butter • 1 tsp Sea Salt Braised Carrots and Heirloom Apples: 15 Carrots • 10 Heirloom Apples • 1 large Shallot • 1/2 c Coconut Oil Roasted Fingerling Potatoes: 3 lbs Fingerling Potatoes • 5 cloves Garlic, minced • 1/4 c Fresh Thyme, minced • 2 tsp Ground Black Pepper • 2 tsp Sea Salt • 3 Tbs of Olive Oil

Instructions:

1. Trim the outer layer of fat and any membrane from the tenderloin.

2. Add your allspice, black peppercorns, salt, and espresso beans to a food processor and finely grind. Place your tenderloin on a long piece of plastic wrap, and begin to add the rub to the meat with one hand while the other presses the rub into the meat. Tightly pull plastic wrap around the meat until it is fully enclosed. Twist ends off to seal, and place in refrigerator while prepping and cooking the rest of the meal.

3. Wash your carrots, cut the majority of the stem from the carrots. After trimming, peel carrots. Next, wash off your apples. You can also peel the apples if you wish, but leaving the skin on allows them to hold together longer during the braising process.

4. Get out a large, thick-bottomed pot and spoon in the coconut oil and heat until oil has melted clear and covered the bottom. Next, place the carrots into the pot and add your chopped shallot. Roll the carrots around so they’re coated in the coconut oil and so the chopped shallot is covering each piece.

5. The carrots take longer to braise than the apples, so keep the apples on top of the carrots for as long as possible, but also make sure they get rolled around in the coconut oil and chopped shallot. Set burner to medium-low heat and place lid on pot.

6. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. If you have a scrubber, use it on the potatoes but don’t scrub too hard because the skin is needed for crispy texture.

7. Place potatoes on a baking tray with aluminum foil on top. Make sure there’s room for each potato and they are not overlapping too much.

Slowly drizzle 3 Tbs of olive oil onto the potatoes, and then roll the potatoes around on the pan until they are thoroughly coated. Once coated in oil, sprinkle thyme, garlic, salt and pepper on potatoes and roll them around in the pan once more to evenly coat. Next, when your oven is ready, place the tray of potatoes onto the middle rack and set timer for 45 minutes.

8. To start gravy pour olive oil in pot and heat over medium-high, then add shallot, black garlic, and juniper berries. Let the shallot sweat and the garlic start to smell before adding in the honey. Diligently stir the pot until it comes to a boil, and then add the first cup of wine, bring to a boil again, and set to medium heat for the mixture to begin reducing. While the gravy reduces peel your onions.

9. Melt butter in pot over medium heat, then add onions. Once the onions have had a minute or two to begin to sweat, add salt and stir to coat evenly. Reduce heat to medium-low.

10. Fire up the grill to cook at 425 degrees. Sear tenderloin on all four sides for 2-3 minutes per side for medium rare, and up time to 3-4 minutes per side for medium. While your tenderloin is searing, pop inside and toss the potatoes in the oven, and stir carrots and apples.

11. Flip your tenderloin out on the grill. Go back in and add the remaining cup of wine to the gravy, as well as the brown gravy packet and brown sugar. Raise heat to medium for 2 minutes while constantly stirring. Reduce heat to low. Return to the tenderloin, which should be close to done, and flip once more. Check international temperature – remove it from heat at 120-125 degrees for medium rare.

12. Let the meat sit at room temperature for 5-7 minutes before cutting. While it’s resting, stir the gravy until smooth. Remove the gravy, apples, and carrots from heat. Remove the potatoes from the oven, and begin plating the side dishes. Once the sides are plated and the meat has rested, slice the venison in 1.5 – 2 inch cuts.

lassing the valleys and draws of a West Texas ranch near the small town of Gail was the last thing I thought I’d be doing during the 2014 deer season.

However, Brad Clay, host of Final Descent Outdoors, called me with a short-notice opportunity to join him and represent Great Plains Kubota on a filmed hunt with Miller Brothers Outfitters. This hunt would prove to be bittersweet and a defining moment in my years of hunting.

It was the week before Christmas and with a Kubota RTV in tow, Brad and I headed west to our hunting destination. I’d only hunted out of state one other time before this trip, so my mind was full of anticipation and wonder during the six hour drive. I was also a little nervous, as it seemed to me that a lot was riding on this trip. We were going there, in part, to feature the Miller Brothers Outfitters as well as Great Plains Kubota as a sponsor and partner of Final Descent Outdoors. The goal was to harvest two trophy whitetails on camera to create an episode from which all parties could benefit from. The outcome, all though different, was just as rewarding.

I had never been on a guided hunt before, but Valentine brothers: Miller, Miles, and Merik were everything I thought good guides should be. They were experienced and knowledgeable, but even more so, hospitable. They were the friendliest group of people I’ve ever been around which made the week away from home more comfortable. Miller’s wife Jessica was a great hostess and excellent cook. Every night after a long day of hunting, we’d come back to a well prepared supper. To me, hunting has always been about the experience rather than the harvest. It’s these attributes, paired with plentiful game and rustic scenery that made the hunt so enjoyable.

When Brad told me we would be hunting on 50,000 free-range acres, I didn’t really know how to process that. A couple thousand acres of private land is the largest I’ve ever hunted. It wasn’t until we drove to the various locations on the ranch that the vast amount of land we were hunting began to sink in. The Miller Ranch, or Bar-V, has been in the family for over a century. So locating game in the mesquite and 20

cedar was second nature for the Brothers Miller. The diversity and amount of big game was also impressive. During the hunt we saw deer, antelope, wild boar, coyote, but the wildest game animal was the free range Aoudad sheep. The Aoudad or Barbary sheep is from the Barbary Coast in northern Africa, and was introduced to Texas as a big game animal for hunting purposes. The West Texas climate is perfect for this sheep, so over the years its numbers have grown in Texas as well as on the Miller Ranch.

On the first sit of the hunt, Miller, Brad, and I hunted from an elevated box blind that overlooked a fence line. Not far from the blind was a feeder, where just a couple weeks prior, a giant buck had been showing up regularly.

Brad and I had flipped a coin to see who would shoot first. I won. That evening I watched several groups of does and a young buck as the sun slowly sank into the horizon that first night.

Although the three bedroom, two bath log style cabin was cozy and comfortable, the thought of possibly shooting a buck of a lifetime was making me restless. To say it was hard to sleep would be an understatement. The next morning brought another first for me, Sandhill cranes, and tons of them. I had never seen one nor have I hunted them, but we saw hundreds flying within a few feet of our blind that GPL Fall 2015

within 150 yards or so, and my crosshairs we’re dead on his chest. As I eagerly requested to shoot, Brad insisted on a more ethical and reliable broadside shot. Meanwhile the doe he was chasing had closed her distance even more, and she was walking strait toward us. I couldn’t see as I was at a lower position than Brad and Miller. All I could do was freeze as Brad whispered her location. I felt helpless, but when the doe walked within ten yards to our right, I just knew the buck would follow right behind her. I prepared to shoot from the hip as she passed us without notice, but we soon realized the buck had slipped farther right than expected.

ROUND TWO After the two deer had crested the ridge, we wasted no time giving chase. When we got to the top there was no sign of the buck nor the doe in the small valley below.

Without much thought, Miller and I began sprinting down the hillside and across the plain to try to catch the buck over the next ridge. However, Brad brought to our attention that it wouldn’t do any good to reach the top without him or the camera. It’s one thing to run with a gun, it’s another to run with a $5,000 camera that’s attached to a long, cumbersome tripod. I knew we didn’t have much time, but I also knew Brad was right. We slowed our pace and allowed Brad to catch up and take the lead on the next hill. When Brad made it to the top, he motioned me to hurry, and while he began setting up the camera I already knew I was going to have another chance at this buck.

There was no time for a slow steady shot because we were already pegged. I was standing as Miller extended a pair of shooting sticks for me. The buck was staring at us 250 yards away on the next ridge line. My heart was pounding through my layers of camo, and I was dripping sweat.

The morning was no longer cold, and there was no more time to waste. As I tried to control my breathing from the strenuous sprint, Brad was whispering, “shoot him, shoot him, shoot him.” My crosshairs were all over the bucks’ body. I was finding the rhythm of the shake as Brad continued to tell me to shoot him. I kept saying to myself that I’m going to miss. I wasn’t comfortable with the shot.

Until that moment I had never even drawn on an animal at that distance. Again, I said to myself I was going to miss.

The only thing I knew to do was to try to get more of my body in contact with the ground, but I knew if I moved it was over. Still, I had to try. As soon as I began to lower myself he bolted into the thick cover of cedars and mesquite.

I was at a loss for words. I felt sick, but even worse I felt I’d let everyone down. I’ve never had that kind of pressure in hunting before, and at the time I never wanted to feel that way again about the sport. Everyone had done their part except me. Of course, Brad and the guys assured me not to worry and insisted I moved on, and I probably wouldn’t have had it not been for the fun and friendly nature of everyone on this trip.

We went back to the same spot that evening and again the next and final morning, but a shooter never showed.

As we said our goodbyes everyone agreed that although this hunt had its disappointments and hardships, it was a great time. In fact, I can’t remember a hunting trip or any trip for that matter where I had laughed so much or had as much fun.

Kubota’s 10 Commandments of Tractor Safety

Know your tractor, its implements and how they work. Please read and understand the Operator’s Manual before operating the equipment. Also, keep your equipment in good condition.

2. Use ROPS and seat belt whenever and wherever applicable. If your tractor has a foldable ROPS, fold it down only when absolutely necessary and fold it up and lock it again as soon as possible. Do not wear the seat belt when the ROPS are folded. Most tractor fatalities are caused by overturns.

3. Be familiar with your terrain and work area walk the area first to be sure and drive safely. Use special caution on slopes, slow down for all turns and stay off the highway whenever possible.

4. Never start an engine in a closed shed or garage.

Exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide, which is colorless, odorless - and deadly.

5. Always keep your PTO properly shielded. Make it a habit to walk around your tractor and PTO driven implements - never over, through or between the tractor and implement, particularly if either is running.

The PTO rotates with enough speed and strength to kill you.

6. Keep your hitches low and always on the draw bar. Otherwise, your tractor might flip over backwards.

7. Never get off a moving tractor or leave it with the engine running. Shut it down before leaving the seat.

A runaway tractor can be extremely dangerous.

8. Never refuel while the engine is running or hot.

Additionally, do not add coolant to the radiator while the engine is hot. Hot coolant can erupt and scald.

9. Keep all children off and away from your tractor and its implements at all times. Children are generally attracted to tractors and the work they do. However, a tractor’s work is not child’s play. Remember, a child’s disappointment is fleeting, while your memory of his or her injury or death resulting from riding the tractor with you, or being too close, will last a lifetime.

10. Never be in a hurry or take chances about anything you do with your tractor. Think safety first, then take your time and do it right.
