Going strong into 2022 As you know, last year we marked 100 years of the Royal British Legion, and also celebrated the return of Poppy Appeal collectors being able to get back out into their local communities. Without them and without you, we wouldn’t be able to maintain the support we offer to our Armed Forces communities and their families. As we continue to work through the pandemic, and all of the challenges that it brings, we are also looking forward with hope. The Royal British Legion will be here for as long as we are needed, and we still rely on your help to ensure Service, and ex-Service personnel and their families always have somewhere to turn. This year sees the 40th anniversary of the Falklands Conflict and RBL commemorations will take place from April to June, culminating with an event at the National Memorial Arboretum on 14th June to mark the end of the war. To mark this anniversary, the Poppy Shop are delighted to bring you a unique commemorative collection including some very special pins, one of which is make from HMS Hermes metals. Of course, we couldn’t forget that this year is also our Patron, Her Majesty the Queen’s, Platinum Jubilee and we have created a celebratory brooch, jewellery collection and silk scarf which take inspiration from one of Her Majesty’s well-known brooches, and one of her favourite flowers. These items will be available soon. Every purchase and donation you make through the Poppy Shop throughout the year makes a huge difference to us. With 100% of all profits from every sale going to the Royal British Legion, you can be sure you’ll be helping us to continue to support serving and ex-serving personnel and their families for years to come.

FALKLANDS CONFLICT 40TH ANNIVERSARY
On 2 April 1982 Argentine forces invaded the Falklands Islands, and by the 5 April, the British government had dispatched a naval task force under the flagship HMS Hermes. The taskforce had reached the Falklands by the start of May and on the 2 May the Royal Navy submarine HMS Conqueror sank the Argentinian cruiser ARA General Belgrano. The taskforce remained stationed off the Falklands, under the leadership of HMS Hermes, and under constant threat from the Argentine air force. This was demonstrated on 4 May when the destroyer HMS Sheffield was hit with an Exocet missile and sank, it was one of several warships lost. The conflict lasted 74 days and ended with an Argentine surrender on 14 June, returning the islands to British control. In the 40th anniversary year of the Falklands War we remember the service and sacrifice of those who fought to liberate the islands and the role played by HMS Hermes in leading the taskforce. MILITARY METALS All of the items in this collection are crafted from authentic military materials and they all have their own story to tell. The Sorrowful Soldier Coin represents a soldier with his head bowed in remembrance, silently saying a final farewell to a fallen comrade on the battlefield. The backing plates are made of brass, incorporating metal from British artillery shell fuses found on the First World War battlefields of The Somme and Ypres. They are crafted using the ‘lost wax’ casting method which create a mould into which the molten metal is poured. Earth, which was also gathered from the battlefields, is mixed with red enamel to create the poppy in the backs of the plates, which is also engraved with a quote from Robert Laurence Binyon’s poem ‘For the Fallen’: “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will Remember them”. The plates then go to a coin maker for the stamped silver heads to be applied.
Each piece comes in a unique presentation case with a detailed insert explaining the full story on its unique creation.
