Welcome Camberley RFC to the Home of Rugby in Horsham
We welcome Camberley Rugby Club today as they fight for promotion and we fight to stay in this league. I can’t think of a more compelling afternoon for a rugby match. We had a great game at the Camberley ground earlier in the season. Camberley beat us soundly admittedly, but we managed to score the highest score against them in the season to that date. And we came away with a bonus point for scoring more than 4 tries. However, we definitely have our hands full this afternoon.
As a side event some of us are also playing golf against them. We’ll be out with them, weather permitting, on the Friday morning. Admittedly this is only a few of us and none of us are in the spring of youth, but, hey, sport is sport.
Camberley Rugby Football Club was founded in 1931 and played its first game at Watchetts Recreation Ground in October of that year. The club affiliated to the Surrey Rugby Football Union in 1933 and, like most other local teams, disbanded in September 1939. During the Second World War, the recreation ground was used to grow potatoes and it was not until the autumn of 1947 that club was able to resume. Initially Camberley R.F.C. had use of the cricket pavilion as tenants of the cricket club, but constructed their own clubhouse in 1970. In March 1973, the first team won the Surrey Cup.
Again we are in the midst of the 6 Nations events and this time with a defeat under our belts at the hands of the Scottish. We do seem to have difficulty at Murrayfield with quite a few past memories of a game we should or could have won, only to be beaten by the Scottish who will never let go. Well done to the Scots in the club today. And we’ll ignore the cries from some of us that 3 of the scores for them came from South of the Equator….
Have a great afternoon. The rugby is always good at Horsham and I’ll see you later.

Notes from the Head Coach
We welcome old foes Camberley to Coolhurst this afternoon as we enter the final stages of the season with the stakes high for both teams. Camberley visit us having conceded top spot in the league to Havant last weekend and will be keen to reclaim this in the fight for promotion. On our part, every point counts in the battle to stay up and with a visit to Marlborough next time out, the opportunity to get some points on the board needs to be taken today.
In terms of our visitors, at the start of the season they were most people’s favourites for the title. Possessing a big, well drilled set of forwards with powerful carriers and ably supported by a set of backs that make good use of the possession these forwards provide, they have the ability to score in a variety of fashions. That said, they have had some surprising losses this season against the likes of Maidenhead in round 2 and a local derby loss to Bracknell leading into the Christmas break which has handed over the initiative to Havant. In the earlier fixture this season, we were on the receiving end of a heavy 61-35 loss and this afternoon, over visitors will no doubt be wanting to repeat that result making this a tough prospect for the team.
That said, over recent weeks, the team has started to perform far more consistently and indeed but for a few marginal calls, would have taken some good wins. Strong performances against Tunbridge Wells and Brighton belied the final result and whilst Maidenhead away proved difficult to understand the official’s interpretations, the excellent win against Bournemouth and the narrow loss to Bracknell all point to a team that belatedly is getting to grips with the league. We will certainly need this for the run in. Whilst the challenge is significant this afternoon, the joy of sport is that an upset is never out of the question. Training has gone well, and the boys are up for the challenge to fight for every point to stay in this league. A result today would go a long way towards helping with that ambition.
