You've taken a big step your home is on its way to being settled. Now, it's time to prepare for the move. We know it can be overwhelming, so we've put together some tips to help you navigate this process smoothly
First things first, decide what’s staying and what’s going. Begin packing up items you won’t need between now and settlement. It’s a good idea to aim for moving a week before settlement day if possible. This gives you some breathing room and helps reduce any last-minute stress.
While there’s no strict legal requirement for cleaning, it’s always a good idea to leave your property in a condition you’d be happy to find it. Consider the new owners and treat them as you’d like to be treated.
Everyone’s standards vary, so we recommend cleaning to a high standard. To help, we’ve included a cleaning checklist below.
Your home should be handed over as it was when the buyer last inspected it If your contract includes specific repairs, ensure these are completed before settlement
Things like picture hooks, TV brackets, and hanging hooks can be tricky If possible, leave them in place If you must remove them, please patch and paint the wall to keep it looking neat We know these situations aren’t always clear-cut, so use your best judgment and aim to leave things in good shape
We recommend keeping utilities connected until settlement is finalised Let your utility provider know the settlement date so they can reconcile your account properly This also ensures everything is functioning as it should during the final inspection
Don’t forget to keep your insurance policy active until settlement day as well better safe than sorry.
While it’s generally advised that buyers change the locks after settlement, it’s helpful to leave two sets of keys for all doors. This ensures the new owners can access their new home right away.
If you have manuals or instructions for appliances, heating/cooling systems, or other features, please leave them behind for the new owners. It can also be helpful to meet with them to explain any specific details.
If you’ve had regular tradespeople like cleaners or gardeners, leaving their contact details (with their permission) is a thoughtful touch that the new owners will appreciate
