Bishop James L. Davis was elected and consecrated the 123rd Bishop of the AMEC in 2004. Bishop Davis has served as the Presiding Prelate of the 9th and 19th Episcopal Districts, the President of the Council of Bishops from 2011 2012, Chair of the Department of Global Witness and Ministry, Co Chair of the Committee on Compilation of the Book of Discipline of the AME Church and as the Pastor of Big Bethel AMEC, Atlanta Georgia.

Bishop Clement W. Fugh was elected and consecrated the 131st Bishop of the AMEC in 2012. Bishop Fugh has served as the Presiding Prelate of the 14th Episcopal District and is a member of the is a member of the World Methodist Council. He has also led several churches in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio for more than 30 years and served as the General Secretary and Chief Information Officer of the AMEC; Secretary, Commission on Worship and Liturgy; Secretary, Compilation Committee, The Doctrine and Discipline of the AME Church; Member, Core Strategic Planning Committee for the AME Church; Member, Editing and Correcting Committee, The Doctrine and Discipline of the AME Church, editions 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012.
Bishop John F. White was elected and consecrated the 130th Bishop of the AMEC, in 2012. Bishop White has served as the Presiding Prelate of the 18th Eighteenth Episcopal District and serves as the Chairperson of the Commission on Christian Education. He is a member of the World Council of Churches’ (WCC) Executive Committee and WCC Central Committee.

Brown has authored four books: What They Don't Tell You: A Survivor's Guide to Academic Biblical Studies; Blackening of the Bible: The Aims of African American Biblical Scholarship; The Lord's Prayer through North African Eyes: A Window into Early Christianity and The Lord's Prayer; and God's Vision for the World: Finding Your Purpose through Prayer. In addition, he was a leading contributor to the New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible.

Board chair and presiding prelate of the First Episcopal District, Bishop Gregory G. M. Ingram in Philadelphia and Vice-Chair, Bishop McKinley Young in Columbus, Ohio (Third Episcopal District) commended Brown for his inspirational leadership.
Prior to his appointment, Brown was the Seminary’s Academic Dean and Interim President. He replaces Dr. Leah Gaskin-Fitchue, who stepped down from the president's position in 2015 after serving the Seminary for 12 years. Before that, the 47 year old Cincinnati native was Associate Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Emory University in Atlanta. He was also an Associate Dean at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and the Director of its Malcolm X Institute on Black Studies.
The Payne Theological Seminary Board of Trustees has elected Reverend Michael Joseph Brown, Ph.D. as President. Affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC), Payne offers both online and residential Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministry degree programs. Currently, 189 students are enrolled and 19 faculty and staff are employed.
The internationally recognized biblical scholar and minister has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Chicago. He is a highly sought-after preacher and public speaker, whose passion for community uplift inspires people around the nation Coming from five generations of ministers, he writes widely about the topic of higher education, generally, and the education of AfricanAmericans, specifically.

A special luncheon was also held in Mitchell Anderson Hall. President Brown lit a candle in memory of those affected with AIDS, and Dr. Michael Miller, associate dean, lead students and staff in a prayer. World AIDS is held the first Friday of December. The first World AIDS Day was held in 1988 to raise awareness and to honor those who lost their lives to AIDS. It has since helped spread relief to those who suffer from AIDS.

The institutionalized policy is expected to help leaders become effective in reducing HIV/AIDS in the communities they serve through awareness, collaborative resources and routine HIV testing.
Seminary Celebrates World AIDS Day
Payne Theological Seminary urged students to become aware of the effects that AIDS can have on all of us. Red ribbons were handed out to students and staff. The red ribbon is worn in support of those that are affected by this disease
In response to the global HIV/AIDS crisis, the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) has commissioned Payne Theological Seminary to equip all A.M.E. church leaders with knowledge about the pandemic disease. The legislation was passed at the denominations 50th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference held July 6-13 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

The degree is composed of six semesters. Each semester begins with one week of intensive work, which meets on Payne’s campus in August and in January. These intensive seminars provide a rigorous academic foundation in the study of ministerial leadership, liberation theology, and research methods. Following each intensive seminar, students and faculty engage in asynchronous dialogue through Blackboard Collaborate.
The DMin program is designed for persons who have been in ministry for at least three years and want to support their professional lives with further academic study.
Students are able to select from seven cohorts with mentor leadership to guide their spiritual and educational journey through the program.
This 90-credit-hour program may be completed in three to five years of full-time or part-time residential and online study. Core curriculum areas of study include: Biblical Studies, Historical Studies, Theological Studies, and Practical Ministry.
The Master of Divinity degree is designed to prepare men and women for competent and faithful service to the Church and to the community in a way that meets the needs of a rapidly changing world.
The Master of Divinity degree provides professional training for Christian ministry and further graduate studies. While most Payne students go into the pastoral ministry, the seminary trains persons for work as chaplains, educators, pastoral counselors, community development practitioners, and scholars.
The Doctor of Ministry degree is a program designed to enrich and transform the ministries of religious leaders in traditional and non-traditional Christian church settings.
Theological Seminary’s inaugural Religion Lecture Series. The free, public lectures was held Aug. 23 to 25, on Payne’s campus in FocusingWilberforce.on the theme, The Re-radicalization of the President of Payne added, “Historically, the black church has always been at the forefront of civil rights, equality and Theseinjustice.three audacious speakers revisited black church history, and lay the groundwork to motivate new seminarians to lead the social justice concerns in their perspective communities.”
Black Church, the keynote lectures educated and created bridges to inspire new seminary students and others. “These popular pastors assisted Payne in transforming black church leadership in ways that will strengthen our theology, affirmed by the popularity of grassroots movements such as Black Lives Matter,” said Dr. J.T. Seminary receives large book collection from retired Bishop John R. Bryant, recently retired Senior Bishop and Presiding Prelate of the Fourth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC), has donated a large collection of books from his personal library to Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, LynnOhio.
Ayers, the Seminary’s Cataloger, said the Bishop donated 668 books and other items, which includes his favorite Bibles with handwritten notes and letters inserted between the pages. There are also sermons, hymnals, dissertations, and books and materials given to him with personal inscriptions from renowned authors, family and friends. The collection is especially rich in topics related to AMEC history, travel and social activism.
“These things are close to the Bishops heart,” Ayers said. Most of the books have been sorted and are currently on display at the Bishop Reverdy C Ransom Library on Payne’s campus Soon, the entire collection will be cataloged and the records will be available through Payne’s online library for all to enjoy. Ayers said, the collection has historical significance because it tells us about Bishop Bryant “Down the road people will want to know about him ‘Who was this man?’ ‘What did he read?’ ‘What was his personality like?’” she said She reached for his Poverty and Social Justice Bible “This book speaks volumes about him!” she exclaimed The collection also demonstrates that he is not a one sided Bishop. “There is a prayer Bible, a spiritual formation Bible, a message Bible, an analytical study Bible, and so much more,” she added. This is a new chapter in a rich friendship that has been shared for many years between Bishop Bryant and the Seminary. He has served on Payne’s board of trustees, and currently works as a mentor in our DMin program. “We are enormously pleased to receive this gift,” said Dr. Michael J. Brown, President at Payne. According to Ayers, Bishop Jabez P. Campbell was the first Bishop to donate a collection to Payne’s library. “That was in 1890 . . . . 126 years-ago,” she said.

Dr. Jana Adams has been named Administrative Assistant for the Doctor of Ministry Office (DMin). Adams has taught Christian education for more than 15 years. Prior to her new appointment, she was the Director of Christian Education at College Hill Presbyterian Church, and Bethel Baptist Church in Dayton.
Rayya Etheria Brown-Wright, Library Aid As a Master of Divinity student, Rayya has been hired as a new Library Aid at Payne’s Reverdy C Ransom Memorial Library. The Pennsylvania native has a Bachelor of fine Arts degree in Animation and Film from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and a Masters of Entertainment Technology from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

The Detroit native is currently pursuing her management information systems degree (MIS) from Central State University. She also holds an Associate of Applied Sciences degree in business and public relations from Sinclair Community College in Dayton.
Alston Thomas Hired as Intern Alston Thomas, a native of Los Angeles, California, and a current freshman at Wilberforce University has been hired as an intern at Payne.

Payne Holds Annual Founders’ Day Worship Service Payne Theological Seminary’s annual Founders’ Day Worship Service was attended by more than 100 guests, including, AMEC Bishops, alumni and friends. Ohio native, Dr. Angelique Walker Smith, delivered a stirring keynote sermon titled, Christian Courage in a Post-Election Season. She reminded those in attendance that no matter who is in the White House and other positions of authority, that God is still on the throne. Walker-Smith is the National Senior Associate for Pan African and Orthodox Church Engagement at the Washington D.C. based Bread for the World organization. Amazing worship music echoed throughout the chapel, thanks to the Wayman Chapel AMEC Choir and Wilberforce University’s New Voices in Praise Gospel Choir, under the direction of Dr. W. James Abbington, a versatile musician and renowned scholar from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta.

Payne Receives $125,000
Payne has been awarded $125,000 from Lilly Endowment to continue the Student Indebtedness Theological Research Initiative over the next three years. These resources will continue to provide vital financial literacy counseling for Payne students. With guidance from a Grace Works Financial Literacy Coach, students learn how to budget using a populated spreadsheet and discuss relevant materials from the video-based workbook, Managing Our Money God’s Way. These resources are available free of charge through Payne’s RightNow Media subscription. The grant will also provide resources to increase the Seminary’s financial aid staff supports.

Continuation Grant from Lilly Endowment’s Student Indebtedness
Payne Theological Seminary received a grant from The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, (AVDF), for the creation of the Payne African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) Digital Archive. Payne has recently purchasing a Bookeye 4 V2 with V-cradle color high capacity scanner allowing the Seminary to facilitate digitization onsite. Payne Theological Seminary’s Reverdy C. Ransom library currently serves as one of the AME Churches officially designated archival centers. The purchase of this new digitization technology now allows Payne to support other local institutions and denominational schools with their digitization efforts as well.

Carol Dougherty Steptoe, a recent graduate from Payne Theological Seminary, has been awarded a grant from the Lilly Foundation’s Pastoral Excellence Network (PEN). Funds from the grant helped underwrite expenses associated with an annual spiritual retreat entitled “Transforming our Trauma into Triumph,” which Dougherty Steptoe spearheads.
