PAYNE STUDENTS GET HIV/AIDS AWARENESS LEGISLATION PASSED AT THE 2016 GENERAL CONFERENCE Students who took CM243 HIV/AIDS: What Effective Clergy Should Know (Science-Based Perspectives on a Global Infection) taught by Dr. Oveta Fuller at the last spring intensive submitted legislation to the 50th General Conference held in Philadelphia, Pa..

The legislation passed overwhelmingly and will be a part of the 2016 Doctrine and Discipline of the AME Church.

During the class, students watched content related videos, read several texts, shared with a NAACP National HIV/AID professional, create skits involving HIV/AIDS, and created sermons and prayers that promote HIV/AIDS awareness. Students were also given the opportunity to be tested by local health department professionals.

Rev. Barrington B. Ross President of SGA

The Reverend Barrington Bernard Ross is a native of Winnsboro, S.C. His ministry began in 1990 at Tanner Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Phoenix, Arizona under the late Reverend Russell Hill, Jr. and the current pastor, the Reverend Benjamin Thomas, Jr. In 1993, his family and he moved to Durham, N.C., where he attended seminary and transferred his membership to St. Joseph’s AME Church. At St. Joseph’s, he worked as an associate minister to with the Reverend Philip R. Cousin, Jr., Senior Pastor. In 2007, Rev. Ross evangelized and preached in Paris and Lyon, France for 10 days with the collaboration of Rev. Melynda Clarke of Greater Mt. Nebo, Bowie, Md. and Dr. Adrien Ngudiankama, pastor of Salem Baptist Church, Baltimore. The Reverend Barrington B. Ross currently serves as the senior pastor of Pearson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Yanceyville, N.C.

As an educator, he is certified in Secondary Middle School Science, High School Biology and Earth and Space Science in Arizona and North Carolina. He began teaching middle schoolers in 1999 at Shepard Magnet International Baccalaureate School. Science students were exposed to various dissections, activities, field trips, science fairs, and events during his career at Shepard. He helped to create and field test lessons with the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) middle school lesson supplements on “Chemical, the Environment, and You” developed by the Biological Curriculum Study Center (BSCS) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. During the summer of 2000, he coordinated and directed Enviro-camp for elementary and middle school students at North Carolina Central University.

He worked in leadership with many science programs MSEN (Math and Science Educational Network), Science Olympiad, Science Decathlon, SMASSS (Students Making another Science Success Story) and Project SEED. In the fall of 2004 he escorted six Project SEED high school students to Montreal, Canada, to present their work at the prestigious Sigma Xi’s international convention. Also, in 2004, he began collaboration with NCCU and the University of California Berkeley on a 5-year National Science Foundation Grant, “Technology Enhanced Learning in ScienceTELS” where he helped to create and field test web-based inquiry lessons. In 2006, he was featured for his work in Science magazine in the article, “New Curricula Aim to Make High School Labs Less Boring”. (Yudhijit Bhattacharjee, 2006).

Shawn Myers Ross, his loving wife of 31 years is a Licensed AME Missionary from Cheverly, Maryland. They have 2 children, Atty. Amena Estelle Ross, a graduate of Hampton University and NYU LAW, currently writing policy in the U.S. House of Representatives and Caleb Wallace Ross, a business executive for DESTINATION DC; the Washington, DC convention bureau.

Rev. Tony Rene’ Guthrie SGA Vice President

Reverend Tony Rene’ Guthrie has always had a love for Jesus Christ. He first professed his faith at the tender age of five years old, and preached his first sermon at 12 on February 25, 1979. He went on to join the United States Navy in July 1984, traveling the world and moving up the ranks to become Chief Petty Officer in 1996. His last tour of duty brought him back home to Indianapolis where he served as a Medical, Dental, and Chaplain Recruiter, and won several awards for his recruiting efforts. Rev. Guthrie now enjoys retirement and is employed as a National Recruiter for Bankers Life in Carmel, IN. God continues to pour out His anointing in the life of Rev. Guthrie. He has devoted his life to demonstrating God’s character and reflecting God’s glory. He is currently serving as the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church, Bridgeport on the west side of Indianapolis. He is also Academic Dean, Executive Board member, and instructor of MLG Christian Academy/School of Ministry. Rev. Guthrie is also an active member of the Young Pastor’s and Minister’s Division of the Union District Association of Indianapolis, Indiana, in association with The National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. He is the faithful and loving husband to Ms. Jetona Edwards and the father of four children, Hadassah, Asia, Tyler, and Chase, who loves spending quality time with his family.

In May of 2008, Rev. Guthrie was proud to walk across the stage in front of family and friends to receive his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religious Studies from Martin University. He is also currently pursuing a Masters of Divinity Degree at the historic, Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, OH. A great lover of God’s creation, his love for motorcycles, and especially the Harley Davidson, allows him to enjoy long rides during spring and summer seasons. Among his other pleasures are Jazz, cooking, reading, current events, and attending Bible Teaching lectures, conferences and Seminars.
