Seminary Scholarships Options Payne Theological Seminary encourages individuals, families, churches, organizations and businesses to consider creating a scholarship to help our students with their theological education. Types of Scholarships Scholarships can be established by an individual, a group or an organization through tax-deductible gifts to Payne Theological Seminary, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Please be aware that all gifts designated for the Payne Theological Seminary are for the exclusive benefit of the students attending Payne Theological Seminary. Non-endowed Scholarship A scholarship can be given on a “one-time only” basis or on an ongoing basis through an annual donation. Book scholarships, to help students cover expenses for textbooks and school supplies, may be established at a minimum level of $500. The recommended minimum for a scholarship that pays for fees is $1,000. Named Term Scholarship Donors may establish a new endowed scholarship with a gift of $10,000 – 24,999. An endowed fund provides Payne Theological Seminary with an annual income stream to be spent for the fund’s designated purpose, while the principal of the fund remains intact. A portion of the fund’s income is reinvested to preserve the value of the fund over time. Named Memorial Scholarship Families may choose to suggest in an obituary that donations be sent to The Payne Endowment Fund at Payne Theological Seminary for a scholarship in memory of a loved one. The Development Office will work with the family to write a formal gift memorandum, the document that legally establishes the fund and establish a pending memorial gift account in the name of the deceased. Upon receipt of the memorial gifts, the Development Office will report the names and addresses of all donors to a designated family member or friend. When the stream of gifts has slowed, the Development Office will help the family choose the fund’s designation based on the amount in the fund. Memorial scholarships also can be endowed if the minimum of $10,000 has been achieved. Process of Establishing a Scholarship at Payne Theological Seminary Payne Theological Seminary offers a wide variety of opportunities to create scholarships for deserving students. The following outlines the process for establishing a scholarship. 1. The donor(s) states his/her/their intent to establish a scholarship at Payne Theological Seminary to a development officer, Dean or other faculty/staff member (referred to as the “seminary contact”). 2. The seminary contact makes contact with the Development Director to complete the appropriate scholarship agreement form using the specific donor requests and funding information. The Development Director consults as needed with the Office of Financial Aid and the Business/Finance Department to clarify any unusual terms of the scholarship agreement. Revisions, if needed, are made to the scholarship agreement. 3. The document is forwarded to the Business office for final review. 4. The document is forward to the President’s Office for signature. 5. The scholarship agreement is sent back to the seminary contact for his/her signature. 6. The seminary contact makes contact with the donor. The donor reviews and signs the document. If the donor has any revisions, the process reverts to step two to make the appropriate changes. 7. Once the donor has signed the agreement, the seminary contact forwards the fully executed agreement to the Finance Director. 8. Seminary contact delivers payment (check, credit card information, etc.) to Business Department for gift processing. Gift Processing batches and deposits check into suspense while waiting for Finance Director to stamp agreement and complete fund/account request paperwork. 9. The Finance Director date stamps the agreement and completes the fund/account request paperwork to establish a new fund with Business and Finance. Copies of each are given to the President’s Office and Development office. A file is started in the Business office. 10. Finance Director communicates the restrictions to the Financial Aid office, and ensures that the donors are connected to the designation fund as stewardship contacts. OVERVIEW What is #GivingTuesday? Created by 92nd Street Y—a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around the values of service and giving back—#GivingTuesday connects diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations around the world for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving. A team of influencers and founding partners joined forces— collaborating across sectors, offering expertise and working tirelessly—to launch #GivingTuesday and have continued to shape, grow and strengthen the movement. The Big Ideas Behind #GivingTuesday #GivingTuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities; it provides a platform for them to encourage the donation of time, resources and talents to address local challenges. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners— nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses and corporations, as well as families and individuals—to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness. As a global movement, #GivingTuesday unites countries around the world by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another. 2015 #Giving Tuesday Campaign #GivingTuesday is a movement to celebrate and provide incentives to give—the 2015 iteration will be held on December 1, 2015. This year, on Tuesday, December 1, 2015, Payne Theological Seminary is participating in #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving. Last year, more than 30,000 organizations in 68 countries came together to celebrate #GivingTuesday. Since its founding in 2012, #GivingTuesday has inspired giving around the world, resulting in greater donations, volunteer hours, and activities that bring about real change in communities. We invite you to join the movement and to help get out the give this December 1. Some ideas include: 1. Get your workplace and local government officials, nonprofits, and small businesses involved in #GivingTuesday. Encourage them to officially sign up as partners on the website (www.givingtuesday.org) and to organize a campaign that promotes a cause or charity that is meaningful to them. 2. Help spread the word about #GivingTuesday. Join the email list by visiting www.givingtuesday.org/join to receive updates, event invitations, and the latest graphics and tools to share on your social channels. 3.
