Obituary Myra Jo Young (nee: Scott), 74, a lifetime Lebanon, Ohio resident passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, September 8, 2021. Born in Lebanon to Floyd and Minel (nee: McGill) Scott, she attended Lebanon High School. She was active with the Bethel AME Church Usher Board and Missionary. She was a founding member of the Lazy Dames social club and volunteered over the years with the Lebanon School District in various capacities and was an active volunteer with the Lebanon Food Pantry. She was a volunteer and friend of the Lebanon Presbyterian Church “Play School” Program where she was instrumental in outreach to many families in her community encouraging them to enroll their children into the program. Always standing in the gap if someone needed a sitter. She loved bowling, camping and spending time with her family.

Myra was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, David, Roger, Herschel Sr, and Fred Sr Scott and her sisters, Jean Scott, Geneva Phillips, and Judy Dews. She is survived by her husband Booker Terry Young Sr of Lebanon, son, Booker Terry (Heidi) Young Jr of Hassloch, Germany, two daughters, Tanya Young and Dava Young of Lebanon, brothers, Floyd Scott Jr, and Don Scott, sister, Lucille Smith, grandchildren Ieshia, Chad, Tanekia, TaShawn, Tierra, Tevin, Jordan, Joelle, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Family Tribute In line with her wishes, we her family would like to share our remembrances of her life as a tribute and invite you to do the same in this gathering.

To sum up our mom/grandma/greatgrandma “gigi”/wife, who lived a simple life, was humble but her life impacted her family, friends, neighbors, and community in a huge way. We want to acknowledge and share both our joy in the gift that was Myra Jo Young’s life. In the hope that sharing the joy and pain together today may lessen the pain and sorrow, remembering more clearly the joy. We are so grateful to have had her as such an incredible example of kindness, honesty and strength. The church and her faith has always been a huge part of her life. When any of us were experiencing a difficult moment she would say “God will take care of you”.

We endured many challenges together, but somehow it all worked out. It worked because we were not alone. We always had each other. Our togetherness enabled us to navigate the constant change and to conquer the challenges. It gave us an invulnerable strength. That strength endures. It’s with me today. In our time together, my mom taught me some of life’s most important lessons. And she did so in a unique, but powerful way. Rarely, if ever, did she preach a specific message or compel me to act in a certain manner. Rather, my mom inspired and influenced me through her actions. While with her words she was humble and caring, in her actions she was bold and powerful.

Even if she wasn’t feeling well, my mom would always take time out to be there for those in need, to be an ear, a shoulder to give someone strength when they needed. She took time to care for others, she put everyone above her own needs.

Even if she was down and having a bad day you would not know it. She never turned anyone away. Her house and her heart were open to all. She always seemed to see the good in everyone.

She had a great sense of humor, a shy smile but she laughed especially at the absurd. So many stories of pulling pranks and teasing children and adults alike. People watching and commentary was one of her favorite pastimes. She was so proud of her time working outside the home, even decades after working she still shared stories, anecdotes about coworkers and humorous experiences she had at Valley Kitchens and the Western Star Newspaper.

Generosity, no child ever got left out. If she brought a treat for one, everyone got something. If a child or friend was in need she would quietly pick something up at the store and drop it off, always saying it was from an anonymous source.

She never wanted praise or credit for herself. What Myra valued most in life was FAMILY. She married Booker Terry Young and immediately started growing her own family unit. But in truth the definition of family was a loose term, to our mother it included anyone who was alone, marginalized, lonely or in need. If you did not have the supporting foundation of a family she welcomed you into hers. Even today so many men and women across generations call her mom, aunt, JoJo, or grannie/gi-gi.

Many times she would call to say I heard someone calling “hey mom” in the store. I don’t know their name but I think they played ball with Terry or you girls went to school with them. Or one of the grandkid’s friends. We laughed because she may not have known their name but she knew the face and considered them all a part of the family. It amazes me how she constantly went above and beyond.

Although she understood and accepted that some things in her life were out of her control, like the loss of her beloved parents and siblings and the terrible illness that claimed her presence on earth. She looked toward the bright side, she found a path forward that allowed her to stay true to herself. She lived her life on her terms, with grace and dignity. And in the end, that’s how she chose to die. Trusting God. Our prayer is that we who knew and loved her would take this lesson from her life, “Never judge until you’ve lived it, be a friend, hold what is dear close. Love your FAMILY”.

A Mother’s Love A Mother’s love is something that no one can explain, It is made of deep devotion and sacrifice and pain…

It is endless and unselfish and enduring what may come.

For nothing can destroy it or take that love away…

It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, And it never fails or falters even through the heart breaking…

A many splendored miracles men cannot understand And another wondrous evidence of God’s tender guiding hand.
