News Release King Holiday will be observed National Day of Service Projects followed by An Evening Celebration in Lebanon FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 15, 2013 Lebanon, Ohio – To honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy, Bethel AME Church and the MLK Community Coalition of Lebanon will sponsor the annual MLK Celebration on Monday, January 21, 2013, at the Lebanon Junior High School, 160 Miller Road, Lebanon, Ohio. Complete Overview of MLK Holiday Activities: 28th Annual MLK Evening Celebration The 28th Annual MLK Evening Celebration will be held in the Lebanon Junior High School Auditorium beginning at 7 pm. The celebration will include recognizing Well Dunn Images and Mr. Jay Mills as the 2013 Drum Major for Service Award recipients. The program will feature music from Tom Giron and Jay Mills, and a performance by Children of God Mime Ministry. The Coalition will also recognize students from Lebanon City Schools who participated in the MLK Essay Contest and Art Show. The highlight of the evening will be the MLK Speaker, VA Chaplain Rev. Dr. Wendell Rome. This event is free and open to the public. Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major for Service Award Winners Community Leader: The recipient of the 2013 MLK Drum Major for Service Award is Jay Mills. His dedication and tireless work in the community has been a blessing to many that have benefited from his service and commitment to arts and music. Jay also served as the chairperson of the MLK Celebration for several years as well as the director of the MLK Community Choir. Organization: Well Dunn Images has been selected as the Drum Major for Service Organization of 2013 because of their continued support and dedication to the MLK Celebration in Lebanon. Wayne and Georgia Dunn have supported the annual event through volunteering, committee work, photography and also participating in the MLK Community Choir. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest Students from Lebanon City School district grades 5 through 12 were encouraged to participate in the Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest. This annual contest will award cash prizes provided by The Lebanon Optimist Club. The winners will be announced at the MLK Evening Celebration. Martin Luther King Jr. Art Exhibition Under the direction of Amy Brewer, Donovan Elementary School Art Teacher (and Mayor of Lebanon), third and fourth grade students are creating art work that celebrates the life and works of Martin Luther King which will be on display at the MLK Evening Celebration.
News Release (CONTINUED) MLK National Day of Service – A Day ON instead of a Day Off The MLK Community Coalition of Lebanon is urging community members to make Jan. 21st a Day ON instead of a Day off by committing to community service at the Lebanon Junior High School, 160 Miller Road, Lebanon, Ohio from 12 noon – 4 pm.
MLK Exhibit Area The entire family is invited to volunteer, network, have fun and learn about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Children can enjoy face painting, arts and crafts. The community can explore jobs and volunteer service opportunities. The Lebanon Police Department will also be on site to provide free Internet Safety software for parents along with free Child ID kits with fingerprints and DNA. MLK 2013 Focus – Support our Military Families The National Day of Service Initiative for 2013, Support our Military Families, has been adopted by The MLK Community Coalition of Lebanon. There are three ways to support military families on MLK Day in Lebanon: Volunteers can help spruce up the American Legion Post 186, 620 N. Broadway, by cleaning, painting and repairing. Donations of supplies and paint are also needed. Donations are need of unwanted and expired coupons for military families overseas. These coupons can be used up to 6 months past the expiration date at commissaries. Volunteers are needed to help clip coupons at the Lebanon Junior High School. The community is invited to drop off or make Valentine’s Day cards for service men and women or donate gifts, toys and candy for military families at the Lebanon Junior High School to show our appreciate for their dedication and service. Volunteer & Donation Opportunities Volunteers are needed to collect, sort, pack and transport donated items during two-hour volunteer shifts. Donations are also being accepted throughout the day to help local charities in the area including: Child Advocacy Center of Warren County: which serves over 1,000 abused children each year, needs new stuffed animals, juice boxes, individually wrapped snacks, art supplies, and paper products. Fresh Start Kits: Donate personal hygiene items including soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, shaving cream, razors, etc. for local shelters. The Homework Zone: after school program is in need of school supplies and individually wrapped snacks.

The Humane Association: shelter is in need of Diamond Brand pet food, blankets, towels, flea shampoo, plastic cat toys, paper towels, plain Milk bones, and more. Lebanon Food Pantry: Nonperishable food items MLK Discussion of Opportunities The community is invited to a box lunch from 12 noon – 1:30 pm at the Lebanon Junior High School. These sessions provide a chance to examine information gathered during the Community Needs Assessment completed by the Family and Children First Council of Warren County, and to get creative about ways to address some of the needs identified. Sponsored by 180 Café, 30 N. Broadway, Lebanon, OH. Continuing Dr. King’s Vision Participants engage in facilitated interactions and generate new insights for collective effort toward Dr. King’s vision; tapping into the wealth of abilities and knowledge of all peoples. Increasing Employment Sue Miller, Director of Community Services, and Sandy Smoot, Coordinator of Family and Children First, share brief updates on transportation, childcare, adult education and housing as they relate to job creation and employment opportunities. Participants in the session provide creative ideas and increase synergy for innovative solutions. Educational Excellence Dr. Seena M. Skelton of Empowering Education facilitates discussion about key indicators of educational opportunity in pre-K through grade 12. Post Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 25, 2013 Lebanon, Ohio – To honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy, Bethel AME Church and the MLK Community Coalition of Lebanon sponsored the annual MLK Celebration on Monday, January 21, 2013, at the Lebanon Junior High School, 160 Miller Road, Lebanon, Ohio. Despite the weather and road conditions, a great number of people celebrated the day. Around 200 gathered at the Lebanon Junior High School to participate in the Day of Service and Evening Celebration.
Over 100 volunteers braved the winter storm and traveled to the Lebanon Junior High School from all over Warren County to make it a Day On instead of a Day off, with the volunteer hours totaling over 350 hours. Students from Lebanon City Schools were joined by students from Madeira High School, Mason High School, Milford High School, and Xenia City Schools. The youth volunteers, from ages 3 to 17, assisted with collection drives and other activities including face painting, coupon clipping and various other projects to benefit area organizations. Robb White of the Lebanon Police Department also provided free Internet Safety software for parents and free Child ID DNA kits with fingerprints. Robb stated that “this is an important event that brings different aspects of the community together for a good cause. Today I interacted with people that I wouldn’t typically get to interact with in the community: like Aaron’s and Western and Southern Life Insurance. We’ve met and now we’re going to plan other events for the community during the year." Also a group gathered to participate in the MLK Discussion of Opportunities, sponsored by the Family and Children First Council of Warren County and 180 Café, 30 N. Broadway, Lebanon, OH. In addition, this year the MLK Community Coalition of Lebanon adopted the National Day of Service Initiative for 2013 - Support our Military Families. Through this initiative, a team of volunteers helped to spruce up the American Legion Post 186, 620 N. Broadway. The group consisted of volunteers from the Lebanon High School ROTC and FBLA programs, military families, veterans and RSVP volunteers. The group began the initial phase of the project by cleaning, painting and conducting minor repairs. Home Depot was also a proud sponsor of this day of service project. Rita Poth, project leader stated, “there are bigger projects and smaller projects, the day of service is the MLK national holiday, but we also have the 40 days beyond that to think about it in a larger way. We're thinking about some larger projects and partners that can work together. It's a wonderful way to think about the MLK Holiday as a day of service, not a day of sleeping late, not a day of watching T.V."

Emma Jensen - 1st Place Berry Intermediate School : she reminded us that Dr. King "focused on the positive instead of the negative" and that "we must be the change." Ava Howe - 2nd Place Berry Intermediate School : "King was happy, hopeful, and determined when he saw followers standing with him, and hopeful that other people did not stop using his words and using them to change the world."

Coalition seeks to remember MLK legacy through action By Tristan Navera LEBANON — Martin Luther King, Jr. will always be remembered for his efforts to make the community a better place. It’s only fitting then, says the MLK Community Coalition of Lebanon, to remember him by getting involved. The coalition is sponsoring the annual MLK celebration this year, which will take place in the auditorium of Lebanon Junior High School, 160 Miller Road, said Ray Kimberlin, the event’s publicist. Activities will take place from noon to 4 p.m. and a celebration at 7 p.m. The event has a long history. “We actually started the year before it was made into a national holiday. We’ve been on the forefront of the event,” she said. The event will feature a number of different activities and volunteer opportunities and then we conclude with an evening celebration. “We’ll have volunteer groups from different organizations, donors to donate various items, we have teamed up with the Police Department, who will be there doing internet safety and giveaways, a children’s area with facepainting, arts and crafts and an opportunity to learn about Dr. King.” Among the activities will be Photography by Dunn Well and Mr. Jay Mills the 2013 Drum Major for Service Award recipients, music from Tom Giron and Jay Mills, and a performance by Children of God Mime Ministry. Lebanon students have contributed through an MLK Essay Contest and Art Show. Veterans Administration Chaplain Rev. Dr. Wendell Rome will be the keynote speaker in the evening. Additionally, Kimberlin said there will be opportunities to honor those who continue to serve the community today in the military. “We have a military focus this year where we’ll have opportunities to get involved to support military families,” she said. Volunteers will be able to spruce up the grounds of American Legion Post 486, send coupons to military families overseas as well as collecting Valentine’s day cards and gifts to donate to the area military members, she said. “We’ve received responses that this is a great opportunity to remember and honor Dr. King’s vision and take it into modern times for this area,” she said.
News Coverage Lebanon honors MLK through service and programs on Jan. 21 Contributed By: Sue Kiesewetter | Enquirer contributor Focusing on service and military families is the theme of the Jan. 21 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. activities organized by Lebanon’s MLK Community Coalition. Rev. Dr. Wendell K. Rome will serve as the keynote speaker for the 7 p.m. program at Lebanon Junior High, 160 Miller Road. He serves in the Air National Guard as the wing chaplain for the 132nd fighter wing in Des Moines, Iowa. His most recent deployment was to Iraq as the senior hospital chaplain at Joint Base Balad. Along with Rome’s presentation, the evening program will feature the Drum Major for Service Award recipients, the essay contest winners and an art show featuring the work of Lebanon third and fourth graders. Besides the evening program, organizers are encouraging community members to honor King’s legacy by assisting those in need. Two separate activities will take place for those who want to volunteer time, donate goods, learn about King. The American Legion Post 186 hall will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There, volunteers are needed to clean, paint and repair the hall. Donations of supplies and paint are needed and can be brought to the hall. From noon to 4 p.m., several activities will be held at Lebanon Junior High: *Coupon clipping: Volunteers can drop off unwanted or expired coupons (up to six months) for military families overseas. Stay to help clip and trim coupons. *Valentine Day cards: Families can drop off or make cards for members of the military. Donations of gifts, toys and candy for military families will also be accepted. *Fresh Start Kits: Donate personal hygiene items including soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, shampoo, deodorant, shaving cream and razors for Warren County homeless and other shelters. *School supplies are needed for students who participate in the after school Homework Zone project. Individually wrapped snacks are also needed. *Coloring books and crayons for the Hospice Center of Butler/Warren Counties are needed. The centers use more than 200 coloring books a month. *Donations of new stuffed animals, juice boxes, individually wrapped snacks, art supplies and paper products can be brought in for the Child Advocacy Center of Warren County. *Nonperishable food items are needed for the Lebanon Food Pantry *Donations of Diamond brand pet food, blankets, towels, flea shampoo, plastic cat toys, paper towels, plain milk bones and other items are needed by the Humane Association. *Volunteers are needed to help with sorting, packing and transporting items collected. The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Coalition of Lebanon, Ohio is seeking nominations for its Drum Major for Service Awards. These awards are designed to recognize the contributions of those who exemplify the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as described in his sermon on the Drum Major Instinct. Specifically, we are looking for three (3) categories of nominees: 1) Youth – Leaders of Tomorrow 2) Adult – Community Leaders 3) Organizations
Drum Major for Service 2013 MLK Drum Major for Service Award Winners
Community Leader: The recipient of the 2013 MLK Drum Major for Service Award is Jay Mills. His dedication and tireless work in the community has been a blessing to many that have benefited from his service and commitment to arts and music. Jay also served as the chairperson of the MLK Celebration for 26 years as well as the director of the MLK Community Choir. Organization: Well Dunn Images has been selected as the Drum Major for Service Organization of 2013 because of their continued support and dedication to the MLK Celebration in Lebanon. Wayne and Georgia Dunn have supported the annual event through volunteering, committee work, photography and also participating in the MLK Community Choir.

The MLK Coalition Homework Zone provides experienced teachers and tutors* each Thursday in the La Luz meeting room, building A.
