PAPA’S UPTOWN

129 ½ North Cortez St. Prescott, AZ 86301

papasitalianrestaurant.com (928) 776 - 4880

Born out of a love for delicious food and wine Papa’s has become a premier location for Italian dining in Prescott, AZ. Papa’s is a family-owned business that has served the Prescott community for over 25 years. Papa’s Uptown is in the heart of Prescott and is reminiscent of Grandpa Benedetto’s spaghetti house and bar in Auburn, NY. A treasured time when families would gather, eat, drink and connect as laughter filled the air. Papa’s is more than just a place to get a dish of pasta. It’s a “feeling” that guests enjoy coming back to again and again. Everyone who walks through their doors becomes an extension of the Papa’s family. The Papa’s family has a passion to serve, offering the warmth and hospitality of the Italian home. Mama proudly shares a taste of her amazing minestrone soup as she welcomes her guests in for dinner.

You can enjoy thoughtful craft cocktails or a beautiful glass of vino from their delightful wine list.

The menu features traditional southern Italian fare, hearty comfort food, brick oven pizza, and delicious pasta dishes that will satisfy every palate. The vibe is “old world eclectic” featuring a mix of Tuscan décor, hand-painted chairs, mosaic art, the sounds of Frank & Dean, and creations by Mama that brighten the walls. Papa’s has been ranked the #1 restaurant in several categories including Best Italian Restaurant, #1 in dining excellence, Prescott’s most romantic restaurant, best happy hour, best wait staff, and best family restaurant.

The Moon Bears Witness: Art Exhibit Natural History Institute 11:00 AM Every sighted human alive, or who has ever lived, has witnessed the moon in the night sky. The moon has been personified, deified, and viewed as a protector, a guardian, the source of life, and a cause of madness. In many of the works in this exhibition the moon bears witness to humankind’s degradation of the earth’s capacity to sustain life. The moon is firm in its relationship with its planet, and neither really cares whether humans exist. It can’t save us, no matter what powers we might give it. Exhibit continues until July 8. Gallery hours are 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Tue-Fri.

AMERICAN COWBOY ENTERTAINMENT

34th Gathering of Cowboy Poets Returns in August

The 2022 edition of the Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering will take the stage at Yavapai College Performing Arts Center Aug. 11 to Aug. 13. One of Prescott’s most popular annual events, this year’s Gathering features more than 40 authentic cowboy poets and singers sharing the heritage and culture of the American cowboy for two days and three nights of entertainment. Headline performers include Dale Burson, Floyd Beard and Joni Harms. A collectible poster titled “Let ‘em in, Dad,” created by award-winning artist Valerie Kagounkin, will be available for purchase at the Gathering, as will raffle tickets to win an original framed giclee of the poster. Burson, a fourth generation Texas Panhandle rancher and awardwinning singer and songwriter, will take the stage Aug. 11, playing guitar, fiddle, mandolin and banjo.

22 Prescott NOW! July 2022

Burson runs cow-calf and yearling operations near Channing, Texas, and writes songs focused on ranch life and family values. In 2004 he was honored with the Wrangler Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum for A Life More Than This. Beard, a Southeastern Colorado lifetime cowboy and sixth generation rancher, will headline the Aug. 12 performance. Drawing from his own experiences and observations of the Western way of life, this 2016 and 2017 IWMA Male Poet of the Year delights his audiences by bringing alive classic and humorous contemporary cowboy poetry. Harms will close out the evening performances Aug. 13 with her pioneering blend of musical sounds. The recent release of Lucky 13, her 13th studio album, has drawn rave reviews with Country Music People Magazine calling the selections

“some of the very best country songs of recent years and prove that Joni Harms is one of country music’s most underrated writers.” The Gathering offers free day sessions throughout the campus where attendees can meet cowboy poets and singers and enjoy stories of the culture and history of the American cowboy. “We’re thrilled to offer this event back at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center,” says Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering’s Board of Directors President Meg Savoini. “The culture of the real American cowboy lives on stage here every year, and it’s been an honor to bring this form of entertainment to locals and tourists alike.” Tickets are available by going to azcowboypoets.org or calling 928.776.2000 or 877.928.4253.

LOCAL MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

Quad Cities May home sales on par with 2021 prices continue to climb

Prescott, AZ – The 396 closed homes sales in the Quad Cities during May matched the May 2021 sales total, while the median sales price posted a 15% gain from a year ago, according to the housing market report released today by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR). The Quad Cities median home sales price was $459,750 in May. Prescott led the Quad Cities with a 29.3% increase in median selling price, even as home sales finished just behind the May 2021 total. The median sales price in Prescott was $649,900, up from the $502,500 median posted in May 2021. There were 143 closed home sales in May 2022, down 2.7% from last May’s total of 147. Homes were on the market for a median time of seven days. Prescott Valley’s median sales price grew by 16.9% from a year ago to reach $467,500 in May. The 120 homes sold in May were on par with the 119 sold a year ago. Nine

days represents the median time a home was on the market there. “As we head into the summer months, Prescott Area REALTORS® believe the market will remain active, but not at the frenzied pace of the past year and a half,” said George Beitzel, 2022 PAAR president. “Rising mortgage rates and increasing home selling prices are combining to strain buyers’ budgets as they also contend with increased living expenses due to rapid inflation. As a result, buyers are being more selective in their offers and watching their budgets much more closely.” “We are seeing sellers return to the market and the increased number of homes to choose from will help keep buyers active throughout the Quad Cities in the coming months,” said Beitzel, noting that there were 78% more homes listed for sale in May compared to a year ago. “Our communities are great places to live. Regardless of economic

conditions, the life-driven reasons for homeownership endure and we will continue to help buyers and sellers meet at the closing table.” Chino Valley had a median price increase of 2.5% compared to a year ago, reaching $350,000 in May. The 43 closed homes sales represent a 6.5% decrease compared to May 2021. Dewey-Humboldt had 47 closed home sales, an increase of 46.9% from a year ago. The median sales price was $401,000, an increase of 2.7%. There were 782 homes listed for sale in the Quad Cities at the end of May, a 78.5% increase from the May 2021 total of 438. Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® and includes single-family, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley and Dewey-Humboldt.

A GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT

25th Annual Prescott Empty Bowls Event Our Silver Anniversary!

Since 1990, Empty Bowls has been a grassroots movement of artists in towns and cities around the world helping fund food banks in their local communities. Think globally, act locally, change the world is their goal. Prescott residents have supported their own Empty Bowls movement since 1997. Prescott Empty Bowls is organized by the Prescott Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and Granite Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation. Several members of the Prescott fellowship attended an Empty Bowls luncheon in Phoenix. They came back and the congregation made soup in their own kitchens and handed it out to neighbors and friends on the deck of their congregation hall. The next year, Bobbie Root, a local ceramics artist, took on the role of event coordinator and asked friends to make bowls.

In 2000, Chef Todd Bulock was responsible for recruiting restaurants to create and donate soups. The event was moved to the Courthouse Plaza to accommodate local chefs making soups and artisans making ceramic bowls. Dale and Glenna Hudson, longstanding members of Prescott Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, helped with logistics and have been involved ever since. In 2002, Eunice Ricklefs took over as coordinator and held that position until 2017. Laura Bloomenstein was brought on board to help make bowls. She has been a ceramics instructor at Yavapai College for over 20 years. Yavapai College students donated over 350 bowls in 2021. The Prescott Area Woodturners, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inform, educate and foster the art and craft of wood lathe-turning, also create bowls. The group

donated 130-plus bowls in 2020. In 2016, Chef Peter Padilla, head banquet chef at the Hassayampa Inn, took over recruiting chefs and we now have fourteen participating restaurants. In 2017, Kelsey Wilkes joined the team and has lead the event for the last two years; Empty Bowls raised and distributed a record $21,000 to local food banks in 2020. This year Empty Bowls is back on the Prescott Courthouse Square (after the Granite Peak congregation parking lot in 2020 and online in 2021) where people will wait in line to select a handcrafted bowl and two soups from local restaurants.. The event will be held Sunday, Sept. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $20. For more information or to buy tickets online visit https://prescottempty-bowls.square.site or Facebook at Empty Bowls of Prescott Arizona. Photography by Prescott Empty Bowls
