For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
PRESCOTT NOW: How long have you been playing together?
Truly Reckless: I (Dale Lee) have been in Truly Reckless as lead guitar and vocals for 14 years. We have all known and played in bands together for almost 20 years.
PRESCOTT NOW: What’s the inspiration behind your band’s name?
Truly Reckless: We are indeed a truly reckless band. We love to entertain, get silly and make the people who come see us happy and have a good time listening to our music and the show we put on.
PRESCOTT NOW: How do you connect with your audience?
Truly Reckless: We play a wide range of music and love interacting with the people who come see us. We bring laughter, fun, and play — doing our best to
make people happy and ensure they have a great time with us.
PRESCOTT NOW: How would you describe your sound?
Truly Reckless: We all bring something to the sound. I am a surf-rock guitar player and love classic rock, ‘60s rock, etc. John is a country star — so he claims. George is an all-around great player, and Alex brings the steady beat on drums. All combined, it’s a raw and punchy sound with an energetic power of fun.
PRESCOTT NOW: What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Truly Reckless: There are too many memorable moments to mention, but one time we played a corporate gig for A&W and we all made a huge amount of money so that sticks out.
PRESCOTT NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Truly Reckless: Stay humble. No egos. All of us have made this our motto for all of our lives.
PRESCOTT NOW: What motivates your band to perform?
Truly Reckless: It’s our love of music and entertaining others — helping people forget the troubles of the world and simply enjoy a wonderful time with us and our music.
PRESCOTT NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
Truly Reckless: I came to Prescott in 1970. My dad had health issues and we moved here from Michigan. John (rhythm guitar and vocals) and Alex (drums) are local boys, and George (bass guitar) is from Huntington Beach, California and has been here for many years.

The Prescott Public Library is happy to announce the addition of 80 new Wi-Fi hot spots, due to the generous support of the Friends of the Prescott Public Library. These hot spots are added to the collection of 40 hot spots already in circulation.
They are perfect for you to check out and use at your residence, while enjoying an afternoon at one of our local lakes or anywhere you want or need Wi-Fi service. Many patrons use the hot spots to work from home, but also to stream video from our own service, Kanopy, as well as accessing other entertainment, information and more.
We have other digital offerings at the Prescott Public Library meant to support what you may need.
If you need to use a computer to access the internet, we have 19 desktop computers with large monitors — six of which have large print, backlit keyboards. We have a station for scanning documents that you can email or save, and we use a mobile printing system called Princh to assist patrons with printing documents from your phone. Additionally, we offer free Wi-Fi in the library, and welcome patrons to bring their devices to a quiet, comfortable space to work on those devices.
The Prescott Public Library also has started offering tech support by appointment. The first and third Tuesdays of every month
at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., and the second and fourth Thursdays of every month at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., we invite patrons to make an appointment with a librarian who can help assist with technology questions. We ask that when you make your appointment, you are specific about what kind of help you need and on which device. If you need help connecting your Wi-Fi hot spot to your device, this is a perfect opportunity for one-onone help.
For more information about hot spots, Kanopy or other technology resources at the library, visit or call the Ask a Librarian Desk at 928.777.1526

Yavapai College Prescott Art Gallery presented Art in the Pines — the 6th annual Prescott Plein Air Festival — the last days of August at the Prescott Campus Gallery and selected scenic locations around Prescott.
It featured 17 artists from Arizona and two from California, painting Prescott’s pine forests, highland lakes and historic downtown architecture as the public watched and engaged with them at no cost.
Featured artists included the Plein Air Festival’s 2024 Best in Show winner Cindy Carrillo, as well as Dana Cohn, Tom Conner, Alison Crary, Robin Deshayes, Priya Drews, Kristine Dutton, Liam Dye, Lydia Gatzow, Lindsay Green, Lance Gulseth, Julia Jaakola, Igor Kogan, Cathy Kreiger, Deborah McAllister, Barbara Mulleneaux, Ben Norton, Anton Nowels and Jose Nunez.
“Plein air painting is very much a spectator sport, so to speak,” said Yavapai College Art Galleries Manager Tim Hull. “It’s really fun and interesting to watch the landscape in front of you take shape on a talented artist’s canvas.”
On Aug. 29, the public was invited to join all the artists on the grounds of Sharlot Hall Museum The next day, spectators watched the artists paint at Watson Lake.
The festival concluded with a ticketed public gala reception, art sale and presentation of artist awards Aug. 31 at the Yavapai College Prescott Art Gallery and the Jim and Linda Lee Performing Arts Center. Attendees visited with the artists and purchased their paintings directly.
The gala also included a memorial wall of paintings by the late Arizona plein air artist Gretchen Lopez, who passed away this year. Plein air painting is done outside to take advantage of the changing effects of atmosphere and natural light.
“One of the best things about the Plein Air festival is the opportunity to interact with people and to watch their reactions when they see my work,” said Ben Norton, Yavapai College Associate Professor of Art and 2025 Prescott Plein Air Festival artist. “Some scenes may be familiar, places they’ve seen all their lives, but every artist will interpret them differently and that can really surprise people.”
The 2025 judges were Flagstaff artist Dawn Sutherland and Sedona artist Shirley Eichten Albrecht. The Best of Show winner received $1,000 and a solo exhibition at YC’s Patty McMullen-Mikles Gallery in Clarkdale.

by John Mason Glen, Ph.D. for the Western Heritage Foundation
In September 1927, MGM replaced its mascot Leo with a new 12-yearold lion named Jackie. As a publicity stunt, some studio executive had the bright idea to fly the animal from Los Angles to New York City.
Veteran stunt pilot Martin “Marty” Jensen was hired for the job, together with a Ryan B-1 monoplane, similar to the one Charles Lindbergh had flown across the Atlantic some four months previously.
A special cage for Jackie was placed directly behind the pilot. Along with containers of water, milk, plus 3,200 gallons of fuel, it all greatly exceeded the aircraft’s allowable weight. On Sept. 16, Jensen, wearing an animal trainer’s costume required by the studio, took off from Camp Kearney near San Diego, rather than L.A. as the SPCA had gotten wind of the stunt and
was threatening to prevent it.
As Jensen and Jackie crossed the Southern California desert eastbound, all went well. However, as they tried to gain elevation to traverse the Mogollon Rim in Northern Arizona, the 220 horsepower Wright Whirlwind engine couldn’t make the climb.
Entering the Hells Gate Wilderness southeast of Payson, near the confluence of Hagler and Tonto creeks, Jensen eased the monoplane into a controlled crash into a grove of scrub oak trees, knocking off both wings and coming to rest upside down.
Neither Jensen nor his passenger were badly injured, and the pilot was able to egress the wreckage, while Jackie remained caged. The pilot shared sandwiches and water with the 400-pound beast, then left to find help.
After a three-day hike, he stumbled upon cowboys from the Haught ranch near Gisela, southeast of Payson, some 120 miles east of Prescott.
The cowboys opened Jackie’s cage, allowing him to be set free, then roped and tied up the animal so he could have his slight wounds cared for. They then loaded him back in his cage, pulling both onto an airplane door and dragged the “trailer” to the Apache Lodge at Roosevelt Lake, the closest phone. Jensen called his wife and the studio.
The studio executive’s first words were: “How’s the lion?”
The U.S. Forest Service quickly renamed the area in Hells Gate Leo Canyon in honor of the lion. Jackie went on to be MGM’s mascot for another decade finally finishing his life at the Philadelphia Zoo and dying in 1935.

submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®
Owning your home is one of the greatest ways to build long-term, multi-generational wealth, the kind that you can pass on to your kids. Maybe your parents are passing that wealth onto you. But that isn’t always the case. In fact, you may be hearing about trends of fewer young people who aspire to be homeowners.
A recent study by the Urban Institute suggests that today fewer young adults are likely to become homeowners. Since 2010, even young adults with higher incomes are less inclined to buy their first house.
Does this sound like you? Someone you know? Your kids in their 20s who haven’t moved out yet? Concerns may come up like down payments, property taxes, insurance and mortgages. But regardless of what is happening in the economy, there is a pathway leading toward your first home.
It may seem daunting to look at the home prices and wonder if you’ll ever get there. A REALTOR® can help. Consider these facts about who is buying homes today:
• First-time home buyers decreased to 24% of the market, while the median first-time buyer’s age increased to 38, according to the National Association of REALTORS®.
This is not a discouragement but a recognition that you won’t get there overnight, however you will get there.
• 17% of buyers purchased a multigenerational home, mostly to care for aging parents or to save costs.
• Homeownership is for all demographics. 20% of recent
buyers were single women and 18% were veterans and activeduty service members.
One skill that you as a future homeowner cannot do without is financial literacy. This is easier than you think, and you’re already doing it today while paying your monthly credit card, rent and utilities. Maybe you’re saving up for a new car. Or you are setting money aside to buy holiday presents and make travel plans to see family.
So what’s next? Get your monthly budget in order. This is a good idea whether you want to buy a house or not. To help, try Quicken or YNAB (You Need a Budget).
You will see after a few months of budgeting that there are extra dollars laying around here and there, and they can be pushed into budget categories like down payment or summer vacation or even planning our wedding.
