Dixie’s Story
Truxton, Arizona — a place I had never even heard of — became my destination when I received a call about a horribly neglected 17-year-old mini horse.
Dixie’s story began with good intentions. She had once been a beloved novelty for visiting grandchildren. But as the years passed and the children grew, the visits stopped — and so did her care. For years she languished alone in a stall. No grooming. No hoof care. No attention. Just quiet neglect — one of her severely overgrown hooves had been bound with twine.
Rescue after rescue was contacted, but no one wanted to take on the case. Finally the call reached Animal Guardian Network. The moment I saw her photo, the answer was an immediate: “Yes.” I made the three-plus-hour drive to Truxton, and this sweet little soul hobbled into the trailer, beginning her journey to
Healing River Ranch and the start of a very different life. Under sedation, our farrier removed eight inches of overgrown hoof during that first trim. Dixie’s feet will never be perfect, and she will likely never be fully sound. But that is not the goal. What Dixie will be is comfortable. Pain-free. Safe. Loved.

If you've caught a live show in the Prescott area lately, chances are you've felt the pull of BackTrax. Formed in 2022 and now anchored by the four-piece lineup of Mark Stevens, Kevin Woog, Mike Weilert and Bill Amerio, the band has built a loyal following by doing exactly what their name suggests — digging into the classic rock, blues and oldies that other bands leave behind. From Clapton to Santana, Skynyrd to Elvis, BackTrax brings an energy to the stage that keeps dance floors packed and crowds coming back. We sat down with the band to talk about their origins, their most memorable moments and what keeps them playing night after night.

Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together?
BackTrax: BackTrax began in 2022, with Bill Amerio and Mike Weilert. The current lineup — Mark Stevens, Kevin Woog, Mike Weilert and Bill Amerio — has been together since May of 2025.
Prescott NOW: What's the story behind your band's name?
BackTrax: The original band members met, each providing two potential names. Not sure who came up with BackTrax, but the premise was we wanted to play more classic rock that other bands didn’t play. Hence the name “back tracks,” or BackTrax.
Prescott NOW: How do you connect with your audience during a show?
BackTrax: We have good chemistry amongst ourselves, which reflects to the audience. We’re lucky to have a pretty good following, so we get to know most everyone. We really love it when the dance floor is full, and we can see the folks having a good time.
Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound?
BackTrax: Energetic and captivating! We play a good variety of classic rock, blues and oldies — Eric Clapton, Santana, Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Elvis, Fats Domino and so many more.
Kevin and Mark both share the duties of lead and rhythm guitar, as well as lead vocals, and Mike and Bill provide the heartbeat of rhythm to round us out into a full-sounding band.
Prescott NOW: What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Mark: Meeting my wife Cindy during one of my gigs 40 years ago. She is my rock star!
Mike: Performing the Eagles tune Seven Bridges Road to a packed club many years ago. When we finished the four-part harmony a cappella at the end of the song, you could hear a pin drop for about five seconds until the crowd of 100+ people erupted in cheers. That was awesome!!
Prescott NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Mark: Keep playing the saxophone no matter how you feel about wanting to be a guitar player.
Kevin: Play every gig like it’s your last. Most memorable moments happen quite often. When the band is locked in and the audience is feeling it, that is pure magic!
Mike: Like Mark, I would have not give up on the trumpet in favor of the guitar. The only brass bands in rock at that time were an up-and-coming Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears.
Prescott NOW: What motivates your band to perform?
BackTrax: The energy of the crowd really gets us excited! The smiling faces, tapping feet and dancers! It’s also the opportunity to sharpen our skills and tighten up all of our material. We love playing out for people, and we all share the same passion for the music that we play! The Prescott area is indeed a special place — everyone is so awesome here!
Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
Mark: Retirement! Been here three years, and love it! I love the downtown area, Courthouse Plaza, Whiskey Row, the rodeo, 4th of July Parade and festivities, and all the Christmas lights. Also some pretty nice people.
Mike: I’ve lived here for nine years because of the ruralness.

Prescott's Impossible Railroad

On May 31, the Western Heritage Foundation will bring to life Prescott’s Impossible Switchback Railroad in a documentary double feature at the Elks Theatre. Based on the book of the same name, the first film profiles its thrilling story; the second, Riding the Impossible, uses flyovers and AI animation to let viewers experience a simulated ride on this legendary train.
Newspapers dubbed it “the Bradshaw Boondoggle,” but Prescott railroad/mining tycoon Frank Murphy proved them wrong. Against staggering odds, he gambled and won to reach the gold, silver and copper riches of his Crown King-area mines.
He built the Bradshaw Mountain Railroad, an engineering marvel better known as “the impossible switchback railroad.”
Many thought it ridiculous when Murphy proposed in 1900 to run a railway from Prescott to Crown King, the 6,000-foot summit of the Bradshaw Mountains. Yet it was completed in 1904 after a legendary engineering and construction effort, only to be
abandoned by the Santa Fe Railroad in 1924 when the mines became unprofitable.

This effort required not only engineering genius, but tons of dynamite and the grit of 600 immigrant laborers to construct numerous road cuts, 31 wooden trestle bridges, a 142-foot-long tunnel and its most defining feature, 10 “switchbacks.”
These are inclined zigzags in the track with a switch at the ends to change train direction so it can move forward and backwards up a grade.
Murphy’s vision was to unite central and northern mines by rail, a cheaper and faster method of ore transport than mule and wagon at a time when Arizona Territory was still a “wild west” frontier.
To build the Bradshaw Mountain Railroad, he partnered with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, Murphy’s partners in two
already successful lines: the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix in 1895, and the Prescott and Eastern in 1898.
Murphy insisted the new line be of standard gauge rather than the more affordable narrowgauge track. He wanted to avoid the high costs of unloading and transferring freight between rail cars of different gauges.
His chief engineer, William A. Drake, proposed to his engineering team to consider using a switchback track layout, and the rest is history.

The Journeys in Spirit exhibition features an array of artworks that include paintings, basketry, jewelry, photography, beadwork, ceramics and more. The collection highlights the extraordinary talent of Native American artists with diverse tribal affiliations, such as Hopi, Cherokee, Diné, Yaqui, Choctaw, Muskogee Creek, Yavapai and others.
Each artist brings their unique perspective and cultural narrative to their work. Many of the artists continue to live within their tribal
communities, while others reside elsewhere yet remain deeply connected to their cultural roots.
Cultural Significance, Educational Opportunities
Art always has played a vital role in Native cultures; it serves as a means of expression, a vehicle for storytelling and a way to preserve rich traditions. The exhibition allows attendees to gain insight into these meanings through personal interactions with the artists.
Visitors can attend an artist reception during Prescott’s 4th Friday Art Walk on May 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. During this event, guests can engage directly with some of the creators behind the works on display, learning their techniques, personal stories and cultural traditions.

Every year, the library looks forward to preparing for a fun summer of reading for youth and adults alike. Through engaging programs, activities, tasks and rewards, summer reading programs help make or reignite reading as a lifelong habit, maintain and increase reading skills and generate interest in both the library and books.
Prescott Public Library is excited to kick off this year’s summer reading program, Unearth a Story, on May 21. The reading program extends through July 25 and is free, fun and encourages reading all summer long.

Adult Summer Reading Program
From June 1 to July 25, adults 19 and older can collect stamps in a special treasure diary by completing a variety of challenges and puzzles to unravel the mystery of a local lost gold mine, explore Arizona history and celebrate the 250th birthday of America.
Treasure diaries and stamps can be collected at the Ask a Librarian desk on the second floor of the library. Patrons who collect at least one stamp will earn a gift card to the Friends of the Prescott Public Library book sale and an entry into a grand prize drawing. Patrons who complete other challenges will also earn additional entries into the drawing. Grand prize winners will be contacted by July 31.
The Summer Reading Program is presented with funding from the Friends of the Prescott Public Library, with support from the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records.

The last performance of the ‘90s Country Hits show at the Prescott Elks Theatre featured an “all-star band” of prominent musicians from the Prescott area.
The core lineup included: lead vocalists: Ann Marie Schimberg, known from the Palomino band; Joel Cutri, known from the Copper State Band; and Scott Barritt, known from Hotel California and Busco Bros.

The Wizard of Oz on Ice spectacular live production transformed the stage at the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center into a glistening ice rink in March, bringing one of the most beloved stories of all time to life through breathtaking skating, vibrant costumes and unforgettable music.
With stunning choreography, enchanting visuals and world-class performers, Wizard of Oz on Ice blended classic storytelling with the excitement and wonder of live ice skating for a one-of-akind theatrical experience.
Bringing an ice show to a traditional theater stage may seem like magic — and in many ways, it was. For this production, the stage was transformed using state-of-the-art synthetic ice technology, specially engineered to create a smooth, skateable surface. The innovative rink system allowed professional skaters to perform with speed, artistry and precision while maintaining the comfort of an indoor theater environment.
Young audience members — and the young at heart — were invited to come
dressed as their favorite Wizard of Oz character and participate in a special costume contest during intermission.

In the 1800s, covered wagons were the backbone of westward migration. These wooden “prairie schooners” carried supplies and people across rough trails, but they depended on iron parts and the skill of blacksmiths to keep them rolling. Visitors will see how wagons were maintained and watch blacksmiths as they shape the tools and hardware that made traveling to the West possible.
