TUESDAY-FRIDAY:
PULSE
For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
Hashknife Express
Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?
Dennis Bennett: Joe (Buffington) and I met for coffee late 2023, talking about putting together a new project. In March, we got together, Dennis (Leahy) on drums, Joe on bass, me on rhythm along with a couple very experienced musicians, we fired on all cylinders and haven’t looked back. We had our first gig last July and did much better than anticipated in 2024.
Corey (Burk) and Les (Gains) joined HKE in early 2025 and we are looking forward to a great year.
Photos courtesy of Hashknife Express
Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind your band’s name?
Dennis Bennett: We wanted an Arizona connection. Joe brought the name after telling me that our original name was not edgy enough. The name goes back to the 1870’s Hashknife Ranch near Holbrook, and from the annual Hashknife Pony Express ride that is run every year from Holbrook to Scottsdale. Our logo has the ranch brand on the horse.
Prescott NOW: How do you connect with your audience during a show?
Dennis Bennett: We engage in conversation with the audience when we can. We have fun on stage and let our enthusiasm flow to the audience, and when it catches hold, it’s truly a fun night.
We play long sets and minimize breaks to keep the audience engaged.
Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound?
Dennis Bennett: Innovative with three-part harmonies. Our genres are Americana and roots rock. We look for nuggets that inspire us. We work at having our own sound including vocal harmonies and style.
Prescott NOW : What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Dennis Bennett: We put a lot of time in. When we
hear, “You guys are great” or “You are the best band we’ve heard,” that’s payday for us. There are many very good bands in our area, so those are truly compliments we love to hear. All of us have been doing this for a long time, and performing music is our passion.
Prescott NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Dennis Bennett: Know that there will be music in your future and embrace it. Listen to and play different genres. Know your instrument, and bring it to the highest level you can. Music is a huge part of all our lives. We have formed a damn good band. We share our passion for music.
Prescott NOW: What motivates your band to perform?
Dennis Bennett: Seeing the audience enjoying the show. Like all bands, we play to different audiences. Being blessed and able to share our music is the motivation. Truly, if we were not performing, there’s no way would we work this hard to be a very good band. Performing is a huge part of it for us.
Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
Dennis Bennett: We all came for various reasons, some native from Arizona, some after retirement, but Prescott’s music scene is what hooked us. This is a great place to live, with an outstanding music community.

Coloring our World: Summer R eading 2025
submitted by Prescott Public Library
Every year, library staff look forward to planning and preparing for a summer of reading fun. The benefits to participating in a summer reading program are many, including helping kids to make reading a lifelong habit, maintaining and increasing reading skills, and generating interest in the library and books.
For all these reasons and more, Prescott Public Library’s summer reading program kicked off May 22 and runs through July 26.
This program encourages everyone to read for pleasure over the summer months with prizes, programs and activities to reward you along the way. Adults also can participate in their own summer reading program by logging minutes and earning chances to win a variety of prizes
The summer reading program is free, fun and encourages reading all summer long!
How to Participate:
You can sign up in one of three ways:
• Sign up at the Youth Desk (youth) or Ask a Librarian Desk (adults) and receive a paper reading log to track your minutes.
• Sign up and log your minutes online at prescottpl.beanstack.org
• Get the Beanstack app, then sign up and log your minutes through the app.

The Chicago Experience
Elks Theatre & Performing Arts Center
7 p.m.
Celebrate the music and majesty of the original “rock and roll band with horns.” Two vocalists blend seamlessly with amazing horn and rhythm sections to recreate the signature sound of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members. The show will feature Saturday in the Park, If You Leave Me Now, Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is, and many, many more — it’ll be an evening of the greatest hits from the greatest band of all time.

Natalie Price & Drew Hall
Elks Theatre & Performing Arts Center
7 p.m.
Described by Trey Gutierrez (Texas Music Magazine) as “one of Austin’s most dynamic new singersongwriters,” this artist’s ethereal, one-of-a-kind sound refuses to fall neatly into one category. Just as comfortable dabbling in Americana or folk as she is indie-pop, Natalie Price’s music is perhaps best encapsulated by its deep-seated humanity. Natalie will be joined by local favorite guitarist Drew Hall for an amazing night!

Journeys in Spirit: a Celebration of Native American Art
by Regnar Greenstone
submitted by ‘Tis Art Gallery
The ‘Tis Art Center & Gallery in Prescott is hosting the highly anticipated Journeys in Spirit 2025: Traditional and Contemporary Native Art exhibition. This annual event, running now through June 24, aims to showcase the rich cultural heritage and artistic expressions of Native American communities.
In collaboration with the Museum of Indigenous People, this year’s exhibition is a vibrant celebration of both traditional and contemporary art forms.
A Diverse Collection
The exhibition showcases an impressive array of artworks, including paintings, basketry, jewelry, photography, beadwork, ceramics and more. The collection highlights the extraordinary talent
by Penelope Joe
of Native American artists from diverse tribal backgrounds, such as Hopi, Cherokee, Diné, Yaqui, Choctaw, Muskogee Creek, Yavapai and others.
Each artist brings their unique perspective and cultural narrative to their work. Many artists continue to live within their tribal communities, while others have established lives outside these environments but remain deeply connected to their roots.
Cultural Significance, Educational Opportunities
Art has always played a vital role in Native cultures; it serves as a means of expression, a vehicle for storytelling, and a means of preserving traditions. The exhibition allows attendees to gain insight into these meanings through personal
interactions with the artists. The Journeys in Spirit 2025 exhibition at ‘Tis Art Center & Gallery is not just an art show but an immersive experience that fosters understanding and respect for Native cultures while providing economic opportunities for artists. As visitors explore this captivating collection, they will undoubtedly leave with a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of stories woven into each piece of art.
Indigenous Children’s Showcase
A new addition this year is the Indigenous Youth Showcase in the ‘Tis Mezzanine Gallery. We are proud to be partnering with the PUSD Indian Education Program to present an exhibit of art curated by local indigenous children!

The ‘Other’ Wyatt Earp—Part 1
by John Mason Glen, Ph.D. for the Western Heritage Foundation
Sure, virtually everyone not living under a rock, has heard of the famous Western lawman and subject of no fewer than five major motion pictures, Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp. He and his brothers Virgil, the Tombstone town marshal, and Morgan, and John H. “Doc” Holliday — all special deputies, had the gunfight near the O.K. Corral in the “town too tough to die” in October 1881.
BUT … were you aware of Wyatt’s “dark side,” when he either murdered or was an accomplice to murder of at least four local cowmen, who may or may not have been the “party or parties unknown” who assassinated Morgan Earp and shot Virgil from ambush, rendering him an invalid for the rest of his life?
The backstory. The Earp family arrived in Tombstone in 1879 seeking their fortune. The brothers began to work in law enforcement, gambling
and really doing whatever they could to pay rent.
They quickly ran afoul of a loose confederation of local ranchers called “the cowboys” by some. This group included the Clanton brothers: Ike, Billy and Phin, as well as Tom and Frank McLaury, Frank Stillwell, Pete Spence, “Curly Bill” Brosius, Johnny Barnes, Florentino “Indian Charlie” Cruz, and other associated miscreants.
After Virgil Earp was appointed town marshal, an ordinance against carrying weapons within town limits was enacted. It was in violation of this ordinance that prompted Virgil — along with recently deputized brothers Morgan and Wyatt and their close friend, the tubercular dentist John H. Holliday, to arrest the McLaury brothers, Clanton brothers and local ne’er-do-well Billy Claiborne for violation of the ordinance.
Apparently, Virgil told the cowmen to give up their arms and the legendary 30-second gunfight began.
Ike ran toward Wyatt screaming that he was unarmed, and in response Wyatt pushed him aside. Billy Claiborne, unarmed at the time, ran away from the shootout. In less than a minute, both McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton lay dead. Morgan, Virgil and Doc received superficial wounds.
Ike vowed revenge. Around midnight two months later, three men ambushed Virgil as he walked from Schieffelin Hall to the Cosmopolitan Hotel where the Earps were staying. His left arm was shattered, maimed for life. Wyatt telegraphed U.S. Marshal Crawley Dake requesting he be appointed to fill Virgil’s position. Dake made it so.
Part 2 next month.

Life during the pioneer era was centered around self-sufficiency and hard work. People often lived in simple log cabins or rudimentary homes made from available materials. Families worked together to build their homes, grow food, and make necessary items like clothing and furniture. Museum visitors will get to experience what life was like for the average Prescottonian more than 150 years ago.
Homeownership Month: Achieving the American Dream
submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®
Every June, the National Association of REALTORS® recognizes Homeownership Month, offering an opportunity to celebrate one of the cornerstones of the American Dream: owning a home.
Homeownership is more than just having a place to live — it represents stability, financial security and pride for millions of individuals and families across the country. This month is a time to recognize the importance of homeownership, honor those who have achieved it and advocate for greater access to it for future generations.
Buying a home often is the largest financial investment a person will make. Beyond financial benefits, homeownership builds stronger communities and deeper roots. However, the path to ownership can be complex — which is why partnering with a REALTOR® is so essential.
REALTORS® are trusted experts who not only guide buyers and sellers through every step of the process but also offer access to a network of professional connections including lenders, inspectors, contractors and title companies. Their knowledge, negotiation skills and resources can help turn a complicated transaction into a smooth and successful experience.
Homeownership Month also highlights the vital role of real estate professionals, community organizations and policymakers. Together, they work to open doors for first-time buyers, advocate for fair housing practices, and make homeownership more accessible to all. Working with a REALTOR® ensures that buyers and sellers alike have a dedicated advocate committed to professionalism, ethical service and achieving the best possible outcomes.
In recent years, the journey to homeownership has become more challenging with rising home prices, limited inventory and changing mortgage rates. These obstacles make the expertise and connections of a REALTOR® more valuable than ever. REALTORS® not only understand the local market, they can also connect clients to trusted partners who help with specialty financing, inspections, and closing — making the process less overwhelming and more achievable no matter the set of circumstances.
For those already in their homes, June is a time to reflect on the hard work and trusted partnerships that helped them reach that milestone. As we celebrate Homeownership Month, we honor the stability, opportunity and sense of belonging that homeownership brings — and the REALTORS® who help make it possible every step of the way.

Benefit Concert for the Wish Man Monument - Waylon Jennings Tribute Concert with Robert Aragon Elks Theatre & Performing Arts Center
7 p.m.
Although his time on earth was cut short, Chris, a 7-year-old boy dying of leukemia, still dreamed of becoming a police officer. In 1980, Frank Shankwitz, an Arizona Highway Patrolman, helped make Chris an honorary Highway Patrol Officer. This was the impetus for Frank to create a nonprofit foundation that would let children “make a wish” and help make those wishes come true. This benefit concert raises funds to erect a statue honoring this special humanitarian who changed the lives of so many children and their families. Thank you for helping to support this tribute to Frank by joining his wife, Kitty, and his Prescott friends at this special event.
