The Prescott Gem and Mineral Club celebrates 21 years of gems, geology and hands-on fun with its annual Prescott Gem & Mineral Show happening Aug. 1-3 at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, 3201 N. Main St.

What started in 2004 as a small tailgate-style gathering has grown into Northern Arizona’s largest indoor rock show, featuring more than 75 vendors from across the western U.S. You’ll find everything from rare mineral specimens and fossils to handmade jewelry, beads and lapidary tools.

“This show represents the heart and soul of our club,” says Club President John Munday. “It’s a great way to connect with the community.”

Visitors also can learn about the club’s year-round activities, including field trips, workshops, scholarships and more. Membership is open to all ages and experience levels.

PULSE

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

Photos by Shari King

Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind your band’s name?

Sir Harrison: I established my name in 2002 when I moved back to Arizona. I went from Harrison and The Blues Kings to the Sir Harrison Band.

I was on assignment in Honduras while working for CBS, I was in Copan Honduras shooting a story around the Mayan ruins. One of the nights I met an archeologist from England and she took me to the ancient pyramid at night, I jokingly said I was knighted so I started logging off on some emails as Sir H. Anyways years later I was trying to think of a new band name and remembered my old email name, Sir H aka Sir Harrison. People started to connect and remembered my band name.

Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?

Sir Harrison: I’ve always played with veteran/touring musicians that help me grow to what I do know. I use a couple of drummers and bassist and sometimes different saxophone players from Phoenix that played with me for the past 10 to 15 years. They are well versed in all genres of music, blues, jazz, funk, rock, etc.

Prescott NOW: How do you connect with your audience during a show?

Sir Harrison: It’s the soulful energy of our music, it’s intense at times. We want every note to be meaningful, we project our heart and soul and the audience gets it.

My music is definitely blues based. I was more of a blues player when I started at age 13. The current sound is upbeat blues, soul, funky, slight jazzy, blues rock and sometimes R&Bish. The music is a sound of our own.

Prescott NOW: What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?

Sir Harrison: There are several memorable moments, when opened up for Richie Havens in 2003, he pulled me aside and said to me with pride, “I will see you again” …huge compliment. All the professional touring musicians that I played with, it taught me a lot and helped me grow to the musician I am.

A few years back we won the Arizona Northern Blues competition, which sent my band to compete in the international blues competition in Memphis — that was a huge honor to represent Arizona.

Back in January I became the first Native American to be officially inducted into The Arizona Blues Hall of Fame. It is a tremendous honor.

Prescott NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self?

Sir Harrison: Stay humble, always learn from other musicians, keep an open mind and ear out for different styles of music. Most of all, listen to your heart and soul.

Prescott NOW: What motivates your band to perform?

Sir Harrison: You would almost have to ask them. We always challenge ourselves to do our best but always make sure our heads are in the right place. My band members love what we do. It’s the connection we have as musicians and our friendship.

It’s when we have those magical nights and moments. It’s when we made that soulful connection with each other and our fans.

Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?

Sir Harrison: I was in the process of moving when I lived in Phoenix but then COVID hit. I just dumped $8,000 on my recording project, which I never finished, and my truck near that time was totaled by a drunk driver.

I was now down on my luck when a friend offered me a place to stay in Prescott. Prescott was the only town that still had live music during the pandemic. So that’s what brought me here.

Summer Car Extravaganza Set for August

The Prescott Antique Auto Club (PAAC) will present the 50th annual Watson Lake Car Show, Old Engine Fire-Up, Swap Meet and Car Corral Aug. 2 and Aug. 3.

PAAC, a cornerstone of the City of Prescott since its establishment in 1970, has been deeply involved in various community initiatives. The restoration of the 1931 Seagrave Prescott Fire Department’s first ladder truck and the Durant 1927 Star Four Touring Car. The proudly displayed Durant in the Sharlot Hall Museum’s transportation building is a testament to our commitment.

Our members also have contributed to beautifying the city’s landscape by planting trees and captivating old engine fire-up displays at Sharlot Hall. The ladder truck and Durant were showcased in downtown Prescott’s 2024 Frontier Days® Parade.

PAAC endeavors to give to the community. We award annual scholarships to students currently pursuing automotive-related degrees. Additionally, we fund an endowment to ensure future scholarships in perpetuity.

In support of PAAC, the Yavapai College Art Department has agreed to conduct an art contest to select the poster and advertisements for this year’s 50th anniversary Watson Lake Car Show.

PAAC supports our military veterans by visiting veteran care facilities and bringing classic cars to display for their enjoyment. Members also visit the Veterans Hospital in Prescott every Christmas and gives presents to the veteran patients there. PAAC supports the Nation’s Finest Food Bank in Prescott by providing dry food donations throughout the year.

We support Make-A-Wish Foundation and endeavor to make a wish come true in our way through classic car shows, rides in local parades, etc.

PAAC is committed to fostering a sense of community through inclusivity. Every year, we host three Parts Exchange/ Swap Meet events at our clubhouse at 823 Osburn St. in Prescott. These events are open to all, and community members are encouraged to bring items to sell, trade or share. Setting up a table or booth and parking is free.

Between April and October, PAAC hosts a Cruise-In at the BMO Bank parking lot on the third Thursday of the month at 303 N. Montezuma St. Community members can bring their cars for display, enjoy other vehicles and patronize nearby shops for food, frozen yogurt and much more.

For more information, you can visit PAAC at paacaz.com, contact the PAAC President, Michael Odle at leadcons@aol.com, or call 661.618.9913.

The ‘Other’ Wyatt Earp—Part 2

Last month we recounted the famous firefight in October 1881 in Tombstone. Now, as famed newscaster Paul Harvey, used to say, “The rest of the story.”

Shortly after the gunfight, Virgil Earp was wounded from an ambush and Morgan Earp murdered while he played pool. Wyatt, vowing “an eye for an eye,” organized a posse of his brothers James and Warren, together with friend and former Texas Ranger Sherman McMaster, “Turkey Creek” Jack Johnson, a friend of Wyatt’s from their buffalo hunting days, “Texas Jack” Vermillion, a companion of Holliday’s, plus Holliday.

They learned from the inquest into Morgan’s death that the wife of Frank Stillwell admitted to her that he was involved in Morgan Earp’s death. The judge ruled the testimony hearsay; Stillwell was released.

As Wyatt and part of the posse escorted Virgil and his wife Allie to Tucson to begin a rail journey to Colton, California, where the Earp parents lived, witnesses noticed two heavily armed men — later identified as Ike Clanton and Frank Stillwell — lurking around the train depot. As Virgil’s train pulled out, several gunshots were heard. Stillwell’s lifeless body was found the next morning.

Earp’s group then rode to the wood-cutting camp of Pete Spence. But Spence had turned himself into Cochise County Sheriff Johnny Behan, preferring the safety of jail to the wrath of the Earps. The posse did find the bullet-riddled corpse of “Indian Charlie” Cruz.

Earp’s men next tracked “Curly Bill” Brocius to a campsite near Iron Springs in the Dragoon Mountains. Two scoundrels — including Brocius — were killed.

Wyatt’s coat was shot to ribbons, his boot heel and saddle horn shot off, but he was uninjured. Holliday pulled Vermillion to safety after the latter’s horse was killed.

Sheriff Behan and a 25-man posse never got close enough to the Earps to make an arrest. Now wanted, the men fled to New Mexico Territory in mid-April 1882 where they split up. Wyatt and Holliday landed in Colorado where the latter died of tuberculosis in November 1887.

Wyatt and his common-law wife Josie spent their final years in Los Angles where Wyatt worked on some early Western films. He died in 1929 at age 80. Film stars Tom Mix and William S. Hart were among the pallbearers.

Work with a REALTOR® to Buy a Home, Build Equity through Renting

submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®

Building equity through homeownership is one of the most effective ways to grow wealth over time. Equity increases as the difference between a home’s market value and the remaining mortgage balance grows. While this typically happens through regular mortgage payments and property appreciation, using a home as a short-term rental can accelerate the process.

Short-term rentals provide additional income that can be applied to mortgage payments, reducing the principal balance faster and boosting equity growth. Renting out part or all of a home creates extra cash flow, helping homeowners reach their financial goals sooner. That rental income can also fund property upgrades that attract more guests and increase the home’s market value.

Renovations like updated kitchens, modern bathrooms and improved landscaping not only enhance appeal for renters but also raise the property’s

appraisal value — translating into more equity over time.

Beyond mortgage payments and renovations, short-term rentals can help offset other homeownership costs like property taxes, insurance and maintenance. Covering these expenses with rental income frees up other financial resources that can be directed toward reducing debt or investing back into the property.

For those seeking even faster equity growth, buying a second home or investment property for short-term rentals can be a smart strategy. Properties in high-demand areas generate consistent income while appreciating in value. However, selecting the right property requires careful research, market knowledge, and is best accomplished with the guidance of a knowledgeable REALTOR®, who can assist in identifying prime locations, assessing rental potential and navigating local regulations and financing options.

Before diving into the short-

term rental market, homeowners should carefully research local legal requirements, as some cities and homeowners’ associations restrict or prohibit rentals. A well-rounded REALTOR® can provide guidance and access to additional resources to help in this step of the process.

Rental income can have tax implications as well, so consulting a tax professional is a wise choice. Managing a short-term rental also requires time and effort for cleaning, communication and upkeep, but hiring a REALTOR® as a property manager can drastically ease these burdens.

Homeownership builds a strong financial foundation, and incorporating short-term rentals can be a powerful way to accelerate that growth. With thoughtful planning, smart investments and the professional guidance of the right REALTOR®, homeowners can use short-term rentals to maximize equity and build lasting wealth.
