Fall in Love with All Things Glendale

With beautiful weather just around the corner, this Fall is the perfect time to explore new things or rediscover your city. Whether it’s trying out a new restaurant or starting a new exercise routine, if you are making a list or just focusing on one new thing, Glendale’s Public Facilities, Recreation & Special Events Department is your best resource. Enjoying the great outdoors may be at the top of your list. Did you know that Glendale has more than 2,100 acres of parks and 39 miles of trails? There is likely a unique park (teach your little one bike safety*) or an undiscovered trail (our newest addition is New River**) just waiting for you! Make a plan by visiting our website - which features a “Park Finder” tool and a trail rating guide – at www.glendaleaz.com/parksandrecreation. You can also read more about our trails on page 11. Planning a party or special event? Check out the Glendale Civic Center, the top-rated facility of its size by Az Business Magazine’s Ranking Arizona, voted by readers and customers; or, for smaller meetings or events, the city has multiple options for rental at our recreation centers or parks and park ramadas. And speaking of events, boy, is Glendale the place for events and festivals during the fall and winter season. Almost every weekend is packed with fun, free, family-friendly happenings you won’t want to miss. Check out our event calendar on page 2. Finally, with fall coming soon, the holidays won’t be far behind. That means holiday shopping. Make sure that shopping local is on your list too, and you will be able to check everyone off your list at one of Glendale’s many independently-owned businesses. Be sure to find out about our Shop Glendale program, featuring deals and promotions, online at www.visitglendale.com. Have a wonderful fall exploring and enjoying Glendale! A NOTE FROM OUR EDITOR

The city of Glendale Parks & Recreation Division’s GOAL FOR 2017 IS TO RAISE $10,000! Help reach that goal by donating to the fund. Information is below.

PUT A LITTLE PLAY IN A KID’S DAY B

GLENDALE’S YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

eing a kid is defined by one very important thing: playing. Playing house, playing dress-up, playing bored games, playing ball and playing tag are all important. Can you imagine childhood without many of those things? The opportunity to play sports and learning skills, like art, music and cooking, among others, is not available to all kids in Glendale, unfortunately. If the cost of sports leagues and activities is an obstacle for some families, the City of Glendale hopes to remove that barrier by providing scholarships for those who need it. Based on economic need, families can apply to receive scholarship funds for their children for activities such as those listed above, in a limited capacity for the calendar year. The account is credited so participants can register for classes or leagues through that account, when ready.

4 | FALL - WINTER 2017

The scholarship account is dependent on fundraising and donations throughout the year. Organizations such as the Anthony Holly Foundation, based here in Glendale, have donated funds to further the cause. Their mission is to “support activities, organizations and facilities that encourage young people to live joyous and meaningful lives and to, in turn, encourage them to improve their families, their communities and their futures.” The donations that the city received from the foundation are earmarked for swim lessons for Glendale children, which helps Parks & Recreation further one of its missions—ensuring all children in Glendale learn to swim. Anthony “Tony” Holly, a former Glendale police officer, was very involved in the community, volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters and coaching Little League when he was in the Air Force. He became a police officer to help people in need, and was especially grateful when he could help a child to better his or her life or to assist with getting them to a safer environment. His mother, Nancy Bonner, who runs the foundation in his honor, says “Tony loved to swim! He learned when he was very young, and got so much enjoyment from it. Being born and raised in Arizona, he was very aware of the importance of water safety and… keeping children safe around water. The best way to be safe? Know how to swim! We hope others

will join us in donating to Glendale Parks and Recreation. Recreation teaches children teamwork, helps to keep them healthy, gives them productive choices for their downtime and adds fun to their lives!” The donation from the Anthony Holly Foundation goes a long way in helping to make sure all children are able to play, learn, swim, paint, make music and much more; however, the division set a goal of raising $10,000 in 2017, and more donations are needed – from corporations, nonprofits, individuals and families – to help reach that goal. To donate, simply do so online at http://www.glendaleaz.com/ParksandRecreation/scholarshipprogram.cfm. Or mail a check (made out to City of Glendale Scholarship Fund), to: Glendale Parks and Recreation Department 5970 W. Brown St., Glendale, Arizona 85302

Do you have kids, or do you know of kids who can benefit from Glendale’s Youth Scholarship Program? It’s easy to apply. An application is available online at www.glendaleaz.com/ ParksandRecreation/scholarshipprogram.cfm. Criteria for application approval is consistent with the Department of Economic Security standards. For additional information, you can also call

Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences, Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability, which makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away. To learn more, visit www.playunified.org. THUNDERBIRD CONSERVATION PARK is one of the Valley’s most popular hiking destinations, with about 15 miles of trails in North Glendale’s Hedgpeth Hills.

HAPPY TRAILS D

id you know that Glendale has 40 miles of trails within city limits? You may know about the beautifully-preserved Thunderbird Conservation Park (TCP), which is a very popular destination for hikers in the Valley. But in addition to that, the linear parks in Glendale are a wonderful amenity that many have not discovered yet. In addition to a bridle path on 51st Avenue that leads to TCP, the Skunk Creek, Thunderbird Paseo, Grand Canal and New River linear parks run throughout the city for all to enjoy. Beautiful flora and fauna greet pedestrians, bicyclists, in-line skaters and equestrians. Check out this map for reference, and learn more online at www.glendaleaz.com/parksandrecreation/trails.

Take a hike! Tips for the best hiking experience: • Weather: Arizona’s dry heat can be deceiving. Hike when it’s cooler, usually early mornings and evenings before sundown. • Trail rating: Know your ability level. All of our trails are rated "easy,” except for Thunderbird Conservation Park trails, which vary. Check out the Trail Rating Guide online to get the scoop. • Dress appropriately: Wear proper shoes, clothing, hat and sunscreen.

18 | FALL - WINTER 2017

• Bring water: Hydrate before you go. Have plenty of water — more than you think you need. • Keep in contact: Carry a mobile phone. • Stick to the trail: Enjoy the Sonoran Desert’s beautiful and undeveloped landscape, but stay on designated trails. • Pet safety: It’s a safe bet to assume any temperature over 90 degrees is too hot for dogs to be out hiking. • Bring binoculars: Most of our trails are inhabited by some creatures that you might want to check out. TCP even has four points along the trail to stop and watch some wildlife. Check out a video of the wildlife viewing blinds online at https://youtu.be/4vXpnLZ5kGU.
