WHY MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Leadership expert Simon Sinek has spent decades studying what separates highly successful companies (think Apple, Amazon and Berkshire Hathaway, to name a few) from their competitors.

Investing in Nursing Yields Healthy Dividends

Sam Merriman worked in human resources management for the state of Pennsylvania for decades, so he knows what makes for “great employees.”

One is a seasoned professional, thirsting for more knowledge. The other is a recent high school graduate, ready to begin a career.

The Sun City West resident was hospitalized on the floor of the new Progressive Care Unit at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, a $10.9 million project that’s a dynamic departure from the traditional hospital unit. Merriman was impressed with the sleek design, creature comforts and high-tech functionality of the new unit, but he was more wowed by the caliber of the staff.

“No one likes to go to the hospital, but if you live in this area, Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center is the place to be," Sam says.

"The people here are just outstanding. Every employee has been positive and has been trained very well.”

Two Banner Health employees, along with 48 of their coworkers, each received a $2,000 nursing scholarship for the 2017-18 school year from Sun Health Foundation to help them reach their education goals.

Simona Lucescu, a longtime nurse and current nursing manager at Banner Boswell Rehab Center, is working on a master’s degree in nursing leadership at Grand Canyon University.

That diploma will go nicely with her three bachelor’s degrees in nursing, German and English, all earned in her native country, Romania. “For me, school is very important,” she says.

“I really love medicine and helping people, so I was interested in exploring health care as a

career,” says Michael Cook, 22, a transporter at Banner Del E. Webb. When he learned about the nursing scholarships, he applied. “I was ecstatic when I heard I got it.” Today, he’s attending a fast-track nursing program, coadministered by Glendale Community College and Northern Arizona University, and will earn his bachelor’s in nursing in spring 2018.

Each of the hundreds of Banner and Sun Health employees who have received Foundationfunded nursing scholarships over the years have similar stories of how education changed their lives. “I love that this is about educating, improving and growing our people,” says Debbie Flores, CEO of Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb Medical Centers. “It’s the best investment of all.”

Foundation support of Banner Sun Health Research Institute Sun Health Foundation provided $500,000 to the Banner Sun Health Research Institute (BSHRI) for its world-renowned Brain and Body Donation Program. In addition, $500,000 of support was provided for the Cleo Roberts Clinical Research Center.

These gifts were presented to Eric Reiman, M.D., executive director of the Banner Alzheimer's Institute and CEO of Banner Research, who praised the support, touting its role in enabling researchers to gain insights into a greater understanding of brain and body function in normal aging and in diseases of aging.

"The brain and body donation program is a study of the health and diseases of older adult volunteers living in metropolitan Phoenix.

We study their function during life and their organs and tissue after death. We also share the banked tissue, biomaterials and biospecimens with qualified researchers worldwide," Dr. Reiman says.

More than 3,745 individuals have been enrolled in the program, and BSHRI researchers have performed more than 1,700 autopsies since it began in 1986.

Sun Health Foundation extending ‘olive branch’ to the community Since 1988, the Banner Olive Branch Senior Center in Sun City has been a haven for Northwest Valley residents looking for a place to socialize, learn new things or just have fun.

The center was launched by Sun Health and is a godsend for older adults who need assistance with daily nutrition. Nationwide, one in 11 seniors experience hunger each day.

It’s a problem Banner Olive Branch is tackling with affordable programs such as mobilemeals, food boxes and a pantry/food bank. A home-delivered meals program, provided at no cost to those who qualify, serves hundreds of disabled and home-bound older adults five days a week.

In 2017, Sun Health Foundation continued its support of the organization it started years ago with a contribution of $85,000 for the home-delivered meal program. “This is helping us reach more people in need, and that’s a beautiful thing,” says Banner Olive Branch Senior Center director Ivy Glinski.

GENEROSITY CREATES PROGRESS Joint Letter from Ron and Debbie Twenty-eight private rooms, a functional and aesthetically pleasing design and the latest medical technology are just some of the defining features of the $10.9 million Progressive Care Unit, which opened in August on the 5th Floor, D-Tower at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West.

The unit, which primarily serves patients with serious conditions that require around-the-clock cardiac monitoring, represents a fresh example of the good that has sprung from the partnership formed by Banner Health and Sun Health in 2008.

As the exclusive fundraising partner of Banner Del E. Webb and Banner Boswell medical centers, Sun Health Foundation and its donors have enabled both medical centers to keep up with latest advances in health care. This has benefited not just patients and their loved ones, but also the doctors, nurses and other health professionals entrusted to care for them.

Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center opened 30 years ago, backed by an outpouring of financial support from the community that continues to this day. In addition to financial gifts, community members have volunteered hundreds of thousands of hours to make the hospital a more friendly and healing place.

The Progressive Care Unit reflects a growing trend in the health care industry to design and build structures that contribute to the healing process for patients and improve the work flow for staff.

Research has shown that outdoor views, natural light, appealing artwork and private rooms lower patients' stress levels, reduce infection rates, lessen pain and shorten hospital stays.

Sun Health Foundation and Banner Health have committed $5.9 million to the $10.9 million project, and the two organizations are challenging community members to give what they can to make up the difference. Several people have already made a generous donation to support the Progressive Care Unit. It’s an investment that benefits all of us.

COMMUNITY WELLNESS A Gift of Health & Wellness A nurse by training, Bonnie White faced down diabetes and a challenging weight-loss goal. But she knew the road ahead would have obstacles.

To stay on course, Bonnie turned to Sun Health’s Center for Health & Wellbeing (CHW).

“Even though I had lost weight myself, I knew that I needed some help with maintenance,” Bonnie says. “Because maintenance is actually more complicated, lifestyle-wise and emotionwise. You’re changing your whole relationship with food.”

Today, Bonnie is living a healthy and active life, which came as a birthday surprise. Bonnie had already lost 100 pounds and lowered her A1C levels. “I lost half of my weight,” she says.

Then, after reading a story about CHW in Sun Health’s LiveWell magazine, Bonnie picked out the perfect birthday gift for herself. She invested in her future with nutrition and fitness packages offered through CHW.

Bonnie credits Susan Welter, registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes educator, with helping her understand how to enjoy meals and give food less “power” over her life.

Bonnie is also committed to staying fit with the help of Rhonda Zonoozi, Sun Health’s exercise physiologist and health coach.

“Rhonda explains a lot about why you’re doing what you’re doing. Sun Health is really geared to the types of needs I have,” Bonnie says.

Supporting Caregivers in Their Journey Socorro Cerda cares for her 85-year-old father, diagnosed with both Parkinson’s disease and dementia. Some days, it feels like her to-do list is never ending, with meals, medications, doctor visits, personal care and activities to keep her father content. But Sun Health’s Memory Care Navigator (MCN) program helps ease the load. The program provides vital information about community programs and services for her father, Bulmaro Carranza.

“The navigator was so amazing, and made me aware of services that I didn’t know existed,” Socorro says.

The MCN program, helps patients, family members and caregivers navigate the emotional, psychological and physical effects of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The service is provided at no charge, and is funded through donations to Sun Health Foundation.

A social worker’s referral to MCN during her father’s hospitalization was life changing for Socorro. She was encouraged to apply for a scholarship to cover the cost of adult day care, and now her father attends twice a week. The half-day breaks give Socorro time to herself, to catch up on things around the house or enjoy crocheting.

Through MCN, Socorro also received guidance on applying for transportation, meals, personal care and other assistance for her father. Socorro is grateful for the MCN program and those who have supported it through the Foundation.

“Thank you so much. It’s been a great help,” she says.

Taking Control of Diabetes Anita Orton has lived with diabetes for two decades, but has struggled to get a handle on the disease.

“Diabetes is deceptive. You don’t feel sick on a daily basis so it’s easy to lose control and it’s easy to let things slide,” she says.

She turned to the Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) training at the Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing. The program, a benefit under Medicare and most insurance companies, offered a wealth of diabetes education, nutrition advice and more.

As important, program staff exuded a can-do attitude and offered encouragement every step of the way.

During the five-week training, Anita felt especially supported by Tracy Garrett, the Center’s diabetes program coordinator and a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes educator. Tracy’s concern and compassion, Anita says, made participants feel as though she was “investing in each of our lives.”

Anita embraced a healthier diet and lost 15 pounds. Her A1C levels went from 7.8 down to 6.9, a move in the right direction. “My doctor was ecstatic and I was ecstatic,” Anita says.

Anita calls DSME a “godsend.”

At one point, her doctor gave her a six-month ultimatum: get her diabetes under better control, or begin taking medication to control it. Anita decided to recommit to a healthier lifestyle.

“My Memory Care Navigator was a wealth of knowledge. She has given me the security of knowing that when things begin to change more rapidly with my mother I know somebody to call to get help. I was very curious about how the Memory Care Navigator program functions, because of all the resources that were there, and it was at no charge. She explained to me that it was through donations, and to me, that was a humbling feeling.”

Since 2010, we have partnered with Masterpiece LivingÂŽ, a multi-specialty group which provides a support system that promotes successful aging.

It’s been a real eye-opener to learn about other faiths and denominations, and visit their facilities.

It is also nice to have a multiple-background staff in the Spiritual Life Department with a Jewish background, a Baptist background and an Evangelical background."

Bobbie has been a fixture in Glendale since the 1970s, when she served on several boards and committees, including The Planning Commission, The Mayor’s Advisory Committee and several bond committees. Bobbie, who was chair or vice-chair of many groups, still volunteers five hours a week at City Hall. Bobbie also helps the Glendale Fire Department for events.

"I enjoy working with the staff. I have contentment, and I feel that I am doing something that helps out," Bobbie says.

Bobbie also has what she calls her “parttime job” with the La Loma Knitting Group crocheting sweaters, afghans, slippers and more for a domestic violence shelter. She volunteers between 60 to 85 hours per month as a part of the group that includes 10 to 12 residents.

Since 1990, MD Anderson has been ranked* one or two in the nation as America’s Best Hospital for cancer treatment. In 2015, Banner Boswell Medical Center opened a radiation oncology center in Sun City, and the response has been overwhelming. From September 2015 to September 2017, the center provided 7,704 radiation treatments to 565 patients.
