2019-2020 Annual Report of Gifts

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends of Rawson Saunders, I’m so proud to share with you the 2019-2020 Annual Report. It was an exceptional year in many ways, both wonderful and difficult. Little did we know in the fall of 2019 that everyone everywhere would be quarantining in spring 2020. Despite the challenges of the 2019-2020 school year, this report is a beautiful record of our community at its best—strong, united, resilient, and committed to our mission to ensure dyslexic learners receive a truly extraordinary education through thick and thin. In these pages, we celebrate our community’s achievements of 100% participation in the Rawson Saunders Fund and the stellar success of our online gala (Rawson Saunders led the way for virtual galas!). Our parents, faculty, staff, trustees, and many supporters proved that we can rise to any occasion and that with your support and partnership, nothing can stop our commitment to our shared vision for dyslexic students. Rawson Saunders’ unique culture of caring is a source of strength and comfort. I am so very proud to be part of this extraordinary community and am immensely grateful for all you do to support our school. Our students are the future—the world needs these creative thinkers. Your continued generosity makes it possible for these brilliant young minds to shine all the brighter, which is a gift that benefits us all. My deepest thanks,

Laura Steinbach, M.S.Ed. Head of School

BEHIND EVERY GIFT, THERE IS A PERSONAL STORY. My story includes being given a unique educational opportunity that changed my life, and a precious child who needed a similar educational experience to uncover his true potential. For both Hutton and me, our educational opportunities were made possible by the generosity of others. Like the school I attended, Rawson Saunders relies on fundraising and annual gifts to provide the resources and experiences that engage and inspire children and shape their lives; gifts like those reflected in this report. I know the importance of paying it forward because I have directly benefited from the transformative power of giving through my own experience, and now my son’s. The education my son is receiving at RS is priceless. I might not always be able to match the dollar amounts generously given by others, but I will always give. Whether the gift is small or substantial, our support of Rawson Saunders ensures these brilliant dyslexic children are provided an extraordinary education with powerful, impactful, positive experiences that will last a lifetime. Our gifts matter. On behalf of my son and my family, thank you. —Whitney Withers, parent of Hutton, 5th grade

SPRING GALA: WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE The Where the Wild Things Are virtual gala in May 2020 was not only a new, uncharted venture for Rawson Saunders, but we led the way for virtual galas in Austin! Though we missed rubbing shoulders and hitting the dance floor together in the Four Seasons Ballroom, 146 families joined us online for a wonderful evening of entertainment, celebration, and a rousing live auction. With your help, we raised $274,220 in scholarships for our families. We are grateful for your extraordinary generosity, especially during such an unusual and challenging time.

RAWSON SAUNDERS is an academically excellent, fully accredited and commended, fullcurriculum, college prep, non-profit independent school for students with dyslexia in grades 1 through 12. It is the only school in central Texas of its kind and one of a few in the country. Rawson Saunders is recognized nationally as a leader in innovative, multisensory teaching methods tailored specifically to the way students with dyslexia—and in fact all children—learn best. The school’s mission is to develop the full potential of children with dyslexia through an extraordinary education. Rawson Saunders students not only learn and succeed, they thrive.

THE RAWSON SAUNDERS INSTITUTE (RSI) is a teacher-training and resource center for educators, parents, and those interested in learning the Rawson Saunders research-based, multisensory approach to teaching essential language skills. This approach is effective for all students, and especially those with language-learning difficulties, including dyslexia. RSI is a Neuhaus partner and is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA). If you would like to make a gift to support Rawson Saunders’ extraordinary purpose, please contact the development office. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this report.
