MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends of Rawson Saunders, I’m very proud to share with you the 2018-2019 Annual Report, a showcase of the awe-inspiring strength and commitment of our community. You made it a banner year for Rawson Saunders by coming together—parents, faculty, staff, board of trustees, and many supporters—to reach our goal of 100% participation in the Rawson Saunders Fund. This remarkable achievement not only gives us a strong standing with outside funders, it shows the world that we are united in a shared vision—to ensure that dyslexic learners receive a truly extraordinary education. Each year brings growth and improvements large and small, and I’m looking forward to this year and beyond as we progress toward making our new, state-of-the-art, world-class campus a reality. Your steadfast support of our school, our mission, and our future ensures that we can make the extraordinary possible for students with dyslexia now and in the exciting years to come. I am so very grateful to you for all you do for Rawson Saunders. Your generosity is the cornerstone of our success and the successes of our brilliant students. My deepest thanks,
Laura Steinbach, M.S.Ed. Head of School

TOSH ARRIVED AT RAWSON SAUNDERS not wanting to go. This may be common, but he was
utterly heartsick and confused as to why he couldn’t stay at his Montessori school where his teachers loved him and made accomodations for him. They also normalized everything, even the fact that he couldn’t read or keep up with the other kids, and that he was being isolated by the teachers and bullied by the students. By the time we made the choice to switch schools, Tosh was in 3rd grade unable to read or add two double-digit numbers. But that wasn’t actually why we were so clear we needed to make the shift. He was being left behind and he knew it. His desk was put off in the corner where he wouldn’t have to face or even be asked to accomplish what the other kids were doing. Tosh just figured that’s the way school was—not having to do anything. He would just sit there all day and stare out the window. His sense of self fell. Even with all this, the teachers and staff told us “kids grow out of these things.” We saw something changing, however, that we worried would never be gotten back—we saw the start of a child who was giving up and who didn’t believe he was “the one that could.” So we jumped and enrolled him at Rawson Saunders. He cried and begged, “please no.” The change and new expectations were hard for him. At Rawson Saunders, teachers would report that he was happy and dancing all over campus, but at home he would cry and plead and say it was too hard, or he would make up a story of “torment.” But, amazingly, he soon started to report having “GREAT!” days. He made his first buddy and he got all A’s on his report card. We all cried. He is reading. He LOVES math, which apparently is his favorite subject. He can count money, in his head and quickly. He informs us on the details on Washington’s Crossing at the Potomac River, the life cycle of flies, and shows us, again, the amazing child that he is (and that we were so afraid of losing). He is now proud of himself and of his accomplishments. Most importantly though, Tosh firmly sees and believes in himself as “the one that can,” and sees us as the ones that believed he could. He said to me one afternoon when school was letting out... “Mom, I wish I could give Rawson Saunders all my allowance.” “Really, why?” “So they could help more kids like me.” We are grateful! —Shanti Kelley, mother of Tosh Kelley, 4th grade

Endowment gifts are often referred to as “ultimate gifts because their impact is permanent and can be transformative to both the donor and the school. This year we were honored to have two new endowment fund donors. Ana and Chris Hunt
Mike and Pete Mankins
While the Rawson Saunders Endowment is in its preliminary phase, the commitment of these two families highlights its critical nature and inspires a focus on including the Endowment Fund in the collective fundraising efforts for the school.
