MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends of Rawson Saunders, I’m proud to share the 2017–2018 Annual Report with you. This report is a testament to the dedication of our community and our shared vision for Rawson Saunders—to provide an extraordinary education for our extraordinary dyslexic learners. Your support makes what we do possible.

2017 marked Rawson Saunders’ 20th year of changing lives. It was both fitting and rewarding that we achieved nearly 100% participation in our Annual Fund. As we progress and grow—and make significant strides toward making our new, state-of-the-art, world-class campus a reality—it’s reassuring to know that our community is a steadfast, powerful, and committed pillar of strength bolstering our school and our mission.

BEFORE ISA STARTED AT RAWSON SAUNDERS, she was depressed, sad, anxious, and angry. She usually wadded her homework up and threw it at me, nightly. She cried and sobbed telling me she was “the stupid friend, everyone knew it” and that she was sorry she was my daughter and “too sad to be alive.” She dreaded going to class each day. The first day of school of the 1st grade, then the 2nd grade, then the 3rd grade, she begged me to hold her back to the previous year. She’d say “please hold me back, mama. I’m not ready.” I’d insist that all her friends were moving up a grade and that of course she was ready. She knew she was different, and while that difference is celebrated at Rawson Saunders, we weren’t at RS yet, and in her world, she was ashamed. What I didn’t realize, was that the shame and lack of confidence was permeating all aspects of her life. Before RS, I’d ask her, “Do you want to try dance?” “No, I can never do that mama.” “Isa, let’s ride bikes up this hill.” “I can’t do that mama, it’s too big.” “Isa, do you want to take an acting camp?” “No mama, I can’t do that. I can never do that.”

Isa entered RS at the end of October of her 3rd grade and soon after she started telling me about what she was learning in school! This was crazy to me. She had never talked about school like this before. She fell in love with history, math, and science. She participated. She talked.

This year, Isa entered the 4th grade at RS and she could not wait for school to start! She practically jumped out of the car. Her favorite subject is Social Studies. She told me she can’t wait to learn more about world history. She says to me things like “I know I can do it, I just need to try.” “Mama, I wanna take dance classes, I think I’d be good at it.” “I’m good at math.” “Yeah, I’m kinda smart.” Now, she reads the names of stores and signs as we drive by. She reads the food labels in the grocery stores. She reads my email for me from my phone while we are driving! She texts her friends and most importantly she believes in herself! She knows she’s capable. She knows she’s smart. She’s confident.

Watching her transformation has been an incredible experience as a mother. It’s the watching of a flower bloom.

RAWSON SAUNDERS is an academically excellent, fully accredited and commended, full-curriculum, college prep, non-profit independent school for students with dyslexia in grades 1 through 12. It is the only school in central Texas of its kind and one of a few in the country. Rawson Saunders is recognized nationally as a leader in innovative, multisensory teaching methods tailored specifically to the way students with dyslexia—and in fact all children—learn best. The school’s mission is to develop the full potential of children with dyslexia through an extraordinary education experience. Rawson Saunders students not only learn and succeed, they thrive.

THE RAWSON SAUNDERS INSTITUTE (RSI) is a teacher-training and resource center for educators, parents, and those interested in learning the Rawson Saunders research-based, multisensory approach to teaching essential language skills. This approach is effective for all students, and especially those with language-learning difficulties, including dyslexia. RSI is a Neuhaus partner and is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA).
