2020-2021 Annual Report of Gifts

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends of Rawson Saunders, I’m very proud to share with you the 2020-2021 Annual Report. Our truly extraordinary community proved, once again, that together we can meet any challenge. The steadfast commitment and support shown by you—our families, faculty/staff, trustees, and friends—to the health, safety, and success of our students and the school made it possible for Rawson Saunders to provide in-person learning during another pandemic year. Our students rise to the challenges of dyslexia every day, and I’m proud and grateful that we as a community and as a school have been able to maintain our focus on providing an extraordinary education for students even in a another pandemic year. This report is a testament to the power of a shared purpose to ensure dyslexic learners receive a truly extraordinary education. The Rawson Saunders Fund achieved nearly 100% participation in 2020 and our hybrid gala to support tuition assistance for families in need was a resounding success. Our community has never been stronger and, as a result of your partnership and generosity, our extraordinary students—these brilliant, “outside of the box” thinkers—will light the way to a better future for us all. With deepest gratitude,

Laura Steinbach, M.S.Ed. Head of School

MY NAME IS NICK FLANAGAN AND MY WIFE IS BROOKE ORNELAS. We have two kids who attended Rawson Saunders—Gavin, now 20, and Isa, who is 12. We joke that the reason we met was to share our dyslexic children’s experiences with each other. Gavin started Rawson Saunders in the second grade in 2007 and Isa started in the third grade, eight years later. There is nothing worse than seeing your child in pain, whether emotionally or physically, and Gavin was suffering in school. When I found Rawson Saunders, the school was smaller and I was a 27 year old single dad. It was a challenging time—I had to work nights and even charged tuition on a friend’s credit card—but watching my son thrive and grow was worth every sacrifice. When my wife and I met in 2013, I knew her five year old daughter, Isa, was dyslexic. By the beginning of Isa’s third grade, she was suffering at school as my son had before Rawson Saunders. We didn't hesitate and were so grateful Isa could also find a home at Rawson Saunders. Like Gavin, she thrived. For both of our kids, Rawson Saunders transformed and lifted their lives forever. We are eternally grateful to the dedication and expertise of their ALTs, all their loving teachers, the staff, and the administration. Our previously wounded children are now confident, successful, incredible people, capable of advocating for themselves and achieving their goals. We know none of this would have been possible without Rawson Saunders. Our kids owe their futures to their past at this extraordinary school. Eternally Grateful, Legacy Parents, Nick Flanagan & Brooke Ornelas

MOODY AND RINEHART FOUNDATIONS GIVE BIG TO HELP FIGHT ICE, COVID The Moody Foundation and Thomas J. Rinehart Foundation went above and beyond in their support of Rawson Saunders. Their generous, well-timed gifts helped our school to continue to provide an extraordinary education for students even in the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic and weather a historic ice storm. "They responded to our needs and acted swiftly," said Kaye Knox, Director of Development. Both the Moody and Rinehart foundations funded COVID-19 precautions including additional staffing, disposable masks, face shields, plexiglass partitions, hand sanitizer, and more. The Moody Foundation provided funding to recover after the week-long ice storm in February 2021.
