“I wanted it to be an enjoyable gummy experience,” Al-Naser said. “Like going out and buying a candy that you liked.”

After various configurations and test kitchens with friends and family, Raw Garden decided on a single SKU with five flavors, a flavor mix popularized by the likes of Skittles, Chuckles and other well-known candy brands, but fairly unique in the marijuana industry.

“As a consumer myself, I didn’t like the monodynamic aspects of purchasing a single flavor. It’s just boring,” Al-Naser said.

Each 100-milligram package includes 20 gummies with 5-milligrams of THC.

Raw Garden’s strategy is trying to appeal to more consumers, particularly younger generations and non-smokers, while avoiding the challenges of managing multiple SKUs.

“Gummies just felt like a fun opportunity to engage with a new demographic, but also provide our existing customer base a fun new product from the brand,” said Al-Naser, who enjoys the product’s mobility and discreteness when he doesn’t have the time or place for a smoking session.

Khalid Al-Naser, co-founder of Santa Barbara County-based Raw Garden, had some specific ideas about the type of gummy he wanted to produce and sell for the extraction company’s first foray into the popular edibles category.

The Vision

Perhaps the inspiration came from his grandfather’s bakery, which made candies, though primarily chocolates.

Maybe it was his time spent as a cook.

Or perhaps, as a longtime cannabis consumer, the vision came from his first edibles experience eating homemade brownies like so many others.

At the time Al-Naser was a restless sleeper and the brownies helped him gain a solid eight hours of sleep for the first time in over three years.

Brownies led to other edibles such as cookies, but subpar raw ingredients and unknown potencies soured the experience.

The Formula

About a year ago the extraction and infused pre-roll brand began testing concepts, mixtures, flavors and form factors with the simple mission to make a quality food product.

The Launch

The brand’s inaugural line of Cannabis Infused Gummies, featuring watermelon, white peach, wild strawberry, Bing cherry and Meyer lemon flavors, were released last month at more than 100 retail outlets in the California market.

“Munching on these slowly throughout the day is a really great supplement to smoking when I can’t have a midday dab.”
