Visions of preparedness.

EVERY GREAT AMERICAN STORY BEGINS WITH A SEIZED OPPORTUNITY. One opportunity can be the difference between a life that changes the world and a life unused. Undiscovered talent, unrealized potential, and unchallenged minds are all tragedies that can be averted by one opportunity. At GMC, we strive to create opportunities. Within the walls of our Junior College and Prep School, talents are discovered, potential is unlocked, and minds are challenged.

WILLIAM B. CALDWELL IV LIEUTENANT GENERAL, U.S. ARMY (RET.)

We inspire students to expand their worlds and we set them on a path to become contributing members of society. We’ve dedicated every institutional gear and cog to student success, and we’re seeing the results. Over the last year, we’ve been able to raise our 3 year graduation rate, our fall-to-fall retention rate, and we’ve raised the number of degrees awarded to our students by 18 percent! On top of that, enrollment in our online campus has grown by 48 percent. That means we’re providing educational opportunities to students in rural areas, non-traditional students, and home bound students that 20 years ago nobody would have dreamed possible. I’m so proud of what our faculty, staff, and leadership have accomplished in such a short time because I know what’s at stake. Young people have big dreams, and a strong education is the key to realizing those dreams. “That’s why we’ve signed 43 articulation agreements with top-notch colleges and universities, 39 of them with guaranteed admission, to make sure that students who start here at GMC are able to go anywhere. Start Here...Go Anywhere!” Our dual enrollment program has grown by 300 percent, creating countless opportunities for high school students to earn college credit. This year alone, we have over 1,350 high school students who have taken on the academic challenge of our college classrooms and are doing so with great success. GMC also enrolled 38 students in our brand new B.A.S. program. Our first ever bachelor’s degree program. And there are moments here at GMC that can’t be measured with statistics. On Patriot Day, our prep school students chalked the campus walkways with the names of 10,000 men and women who died in the September 11 attacks and the War on Terror. Days like that don’t change the numbers on a balance sheet, but they make me proud to be part of a school that still teaches lessons about sacrifice and love of country—a school where values like duty, honor, and country will never be replaced with weaker, more convenient values that ask less of our students. Of course, we could not have done any of this without you -- we are so thankful for your generosity! From the classroom to the athletic field to our cadet corps, you’re providing opportunities that couldn’t have existed without you, and there’s no limit to how far our students might run with those opportunities. After all, curing a disease begins with a chemistry class and winning a medal of honor begins with a profound love of country, both of which can be found on our campus alongside countless other paths for the future. And even as we celebrate the opportunities we created yesterday and today, we keep clear eyes on the ones, which together, we’ll create tomorrow. GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE

100 YEARS OF ROTC

1916-2016

For more than 100 years, the Army Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) has been preparing college students to succeed in any competitive environment and instilling values in our nation’s future leaders. For equally as long, GMC has been committed to the ROTC. Building on their support for GMC’s Corps of Cadets, community leaders and elected officials broke ground in May for a new Military Science Building. Scheduled to open in August 2017, the 13,500 square foot, two-story facility will be home to the school’s Military Science department and cadet leadership. Flanked by a beautiful rotunda will be four classrooms, state-of-the-art technology, a suite of offices and space for training.

PRES FRONT ELEVATION (SOUTH)

Immediately adjacent to the Baugh Barracks cadet living quarters on Lincoln Street, the new Military Science building will bring cadet staff and Army ROTC staff together in one location, greatly facilitating coordination and training for instructors and cadets alike. The building is also close to the Oconee River, where cadets regularly carry out physical fitness activities. The building will honor the past by recognizing GMC military program alumni whose service and achievements reflect the values and benefits of a GMC education.

“Every year, GMC makes a significant investment in developing future Army officers for our country and the state of Georgia, but this year we’re re-energized with the opportunity to occupy a new world-class facility,” says LTC Casey Geist, GMC professor of Military Science. “This new facility will further enable the continued recruitment of quality candidates from across the nation and their development as we look to them to lead our nation’s Army in the future.”

GMC is one of just five Army-designated junior military colleges in the U.S. that commissions officers into the US Army in two years (rather than the traditional four). About 250 cadets make up the Corps and belong to one of five developmental program categories.

For more than a century, GMC has shown its steadfast support for the U.S. Army and the ROTC. In fact, many students choose GMC to start their military career based on the excellent reputation of our programs. “It all goes back to our core values: Duty, Honor, Country. The ‘country’ part – service to nation, being part of something greater, giving back to this great nation that’s given so much to us – that’s what GMC upholds,” says COL Patrick Beer, Commandant of Cadets and Dean of Students. “That’s what attracts students here and what prepares them for their future.”

Visions of Leadership. 6

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2015-2016

NEW GMC REGIMENTAL COMMANDER SIERRA BROWER IS POISED TO SOAR If Sierra Brower could choose a superpower, she’d choose the ability to fly. Inspired by her grandfather, who served 23 years in the Pennsylvania Air National Guard, Brower is an avid aviation aficionado who became interested in flying helicopters in high school. As a junior ROTC member, she rose through the ranks and today, as a GMC cadet, she’s aiming for a career as an Army Chinook pilot. Early on, Brower set her sights on advancing her military career. In October of her senior year in high school, Brower’s passion for helicopters grew when she enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard as an aviation operations specialist. Brower was visiting her boyfriend in Georgia when she learned his father was a proud GMC alumnus. After listening to his GMC memories and his strong endorsement of the school, she reached out to recruiters. Soon after she received notification that she’d been conditionally selected by the US Army for a two-year ROTC scholarship based on her academic studies, extracurricular participation, and leadership potential, and the desire to serve as a future Army officer. At that point, she says, “The signs were all pointing toward GMC—I figured I’d better give it a go!” This year, Brower was chosen as the Regimental Commander of the 138th Corps of Cadets and is on track to become the first female cadet in GMC history to serve in the position for an entire school year. She is also the vice president of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society and treasurer of the Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. Brower maintains her busy schedule with a 3.9 GPA, while overseeing more than 259 college cadets. In addition to participating in several academic and service organizations, Brower has also been a member of the Ranger Challenge Team. Last year, the team won first place among national military junior colleges. Within the Corps of Cadets, she has served as a Plebe Trainer (Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant), narrated formal parades and events, and was a student worker for WEPA. Her motto: “I’m always going to put myself out there and make the most of what I have.” Taking the advice of a close mentor, Brower began this year with an end goal. Her intention is to “break the paradigm” in an effort to set an example – and an expectation – of elevated excellence for her fellow cadets. What’s her proudest accomplishment so far? Being pinned and recognized as GMC’s newest Regimental Commander. “I get more confident and my skin gets thicker every day,” she explains about her leadership role at GMC. “I think that’s what every great leader needs. That, and an incredible team of mentors and fellow cadets who offer me feedback on my performance. I can’t think of anything more valuable.” When she receives her commission in May, Brower plans to earn a business degree from Virginia Tech. Between now and then, she plans to stay her course of excellence—maintain her grade point average, participate in more clubs and extracurricular activities and, most of all, learn and grow with her fellow cadets. For Sierra Brower, the sky’s the limit!

Students have spoken and GMC has listened. In response to growing student interest in the arts – and expanding job GMC Offers New opportunities – GMC Warner Robins has begun offering a Associate Degree new associate degree in studio art. Other GMC campuses were quick to follow suit, with the degree now offered at the in Studio Art Augusta, Columbus, Fairburn and Fayetteville GMC locations. Studio art majors learn the fundamental concepts of design, artistic traditions, and the use of artistic materials and technologies. Of course, they also learn to explore and cultivate their own individual sense of creativity. With a degree in studio arts, GMC grads can transfer to a four-year arts program or join the work force directly. Kayla Jones was the program’s first graduate and couldn’t be happier with her freshly minted Studio Art degree. “I’ve always liked art and I’d taken a lot of art classes, but never realized you could have a career in it. As soon as GMC began offering it as a major, I was in. The day after I graduated, I got an acceptance letter from the Savannah College of Arts and Design in Atlanta, and at least two scholarships,” she says. “I really want to become an art teacher so I can help other people see all the opportunities there are to have a career in art.” Those opportunities are many, including jobs as an artist, graphic designer, art therapist, interior designer, sculptor, art critic and more. The employment of artists and related workers is good, expected to grow 12 percent by 2018, with a range of both salaried and freelance opportunities. “We always want to respond to student needs, so when they start expressing interest in a certain area, we look into the feasibility of supporting it with an expanded curriculum,” said Alice Smith, Academic Dean for GMC-Warner Robins, Dublin and Eastman. “We also look at employers’ needs and develop related programs that benefit both our students and our communities.” GMC’s new Studio Art degree is another great example of the school’s mutually beneficial approach, helping turn students’ passions into professions.

Endowing Values Your personal values are literally endowed when you create and fund a named endowment with the Georgia Military College Foundation. This is so much more than endowing a program, facilities or even part of our operational budget. Your commitment to our mission and ideas will be carried into the future at Georgia Military College for generations through your endowment fund.

An endowment doesn’t necessarily require a lump-sum gift or even a large sum of money. Some may be surprised to learn that an endowment can get started right away, build up over time or even receive your ultimate gift through your estate. We work to help you set reasonable objectives for your endowment and to make it convenient, always.

Consider for a moment your grandchildren and their children. Family members in distant future generations will not have known you, though they will know something important about you through the endowment. Imagine the effect this will have on your family. They will have an insight into your generosity, your values, and it could influence them to add to your endowment or perhaps create one of their own. Endowments convey values in powerful ways.

Many generous donors use endowments as tools to pass their values on to future generations. You can find out more about endowments at www.gmcfoundation.org/How to Give/Types of Gifts/Gifts That Make an Impact After Your Lifetime/Endowed Gifts, or by contacting Sally Thrower, Associate Vice President for Development at (478) 387-4885.

ENDOWED FUNDS The Georgia Military College Foundation gratefully acknowledges the generosity of donors to the following funds that are either building toward endowment or fully endowed, with individual market values of $25,000 to more than $1.5 million each. An endowed fund represents a “perpetual gift.” Income from the invested fund is used to fulfill the intended purpose, and any income in excess of the award is returned to the principal to grow the fund. An investment of $25,000 will establish an endowed fund and may be completed over a five-year period.

This year, I’m again humbled by your outpouring of generosity, which has allowed us to expand scholarships, enhance academics and improve our physical facilities. More students than ever before are attending GMC. More students are taking advantage of the powerful learning experiences that happen here. Further, more students than ever are graduating from GMC, poised to make a positive mark on the world. Even more impressive is the impact of your dollars. History tell us there’s no better investment in the future and security of our nation than the investment in education. GMC puts that investment to work every day, building a character-based foundation for student success. In addition to their subject matter expertise, GMC students leave here with the skill to strive for deeper understanding, engage in meaningful discourse, participate in productive collaboration, persist in the face of challenge and transform obstacles into opportunities. With your help – and the expanded access made possible by our donor-supported scholarship fund – more students can leverage a GMC education to discover new possibilities, ignite passions and become responsible, successful community members. In fact, our number of named endowed funds in support of student success has grown to 106, of which 78 are fully endowed. Ever true to our core values of Duty, Honor, Country and regimental accolade, “Character Above All,” these words continue to define what we impart to our students. By contributing to GMC, you’re helping build a better future for our state and country. I thank you for your support and the continued confidence you place in GMC.

Happening Now

For Elaine Kirkland, the GMC ’73 Scholarship is doubly meaningful. In 2014, her older son Andrew, then a Prep School senior, was awarded one of the first three scholarships from the fund, with younger brother Aaron receiving one this year. “The GMC ’73 Scholarship has been so special to us. With four kids, the financial help is extremely beneficial, but so is the personal involvement of the donors,” she says. “They’ve gotten to know both boys and even came to Andrew’s graduation. Seeing someone recognize your child and make him feel valued is very special.” Both Kirkland boys are doing their scholarships proud. Andrew, a student athlete, chaplain and leader while at GMC, is now a sophomore at the University of West Georgia. Meanwhile, Aaron is also making his mark as a strong student, multi-sport athlete and Christian leader. Touching lives and making a meaningful difference is what the GMC ’73 Scholarship is all about. “There are many charitable causes out there, where you give money and never see the results. Our scholarship program gives you the opportunity to see real results,” said Jim Kjer (HS ’73), co-founder of the scholarship. “We’re recognizing potential and giving students the opportunity to excel in an environment that nurtures and builds character, not one that coddles or just passes them along. With GMC’s matching funds – they’ll triple your donation through the end of the year – it’s a great investment. And it’s one I’m personally very proud of.” As well he should be. Jim and three of his classmates – Patricia Baugh Thompson, Ben Plexico and Mike Perez – founded the GMC ’73 Scholarship in 2014 to honor all ‘70s era alumni who’d passed away. Sadly, the number of deceased is more than 110, but the scholarship is a way to pass on their spirit to current Prep School students. “Our intention is to be the flagship scholarship for the Prep School, if not the Junior College, as well,” said Jim. “We want to set an example of what alumni can do to give back to the school.” The example they’re setting has already become inspirational. Recipient Cayla Barnes is a Prep School senior, planning to pursue a college degree in the medical field. “[The ’73 Scholarship is] a wonderful way to assure the growth and development of future leaders,” says Cayla’s mother, Selena. “It not only aids them financially, but instills the importance of leaving a legacy. My daughter was really grateful and so excited to have an opportunity to meet the donors. Later, she told me she plans to do the same thing for another student one day.” To date, GMC alumni and friends have donated more than $32,000 which, when combined with matching funds, totals more than $94,000. Those gifts were enough to fund multiple scholarships in 2014 and 2015, and to establish an endowment that will fund four scholarships a year (one for grades 9 through 12) in perpetuity. Student recipients keep the scholarships through graduation, as long as they continue to meet the awards criteria. Plus, for every tenth of a point the student raises his or her GPA each year, the scholarship amount increases by $100 for the next year.

Triple Your Donation to the GMC ’73 Scholarship

“You won’t find many programs giving multiple, generous scholarships every school year, which is another reason it’s a worthy investment,” said Jim Kjer, HS’73. “All of our recipients are motivated individuals that want to achieve something in life. A donation to the fund not only gives students, like Cayla, Aaron, Julia and Natalie, a good education, it gives them a real stepping stone to wherever they want to go in life.”

Top 3 Reasons to Give to the GMC ’73 Scholarship before January 1) It’s a great cause. Your dollars will help deserving students who simply need some financial support to reach their potential. 2) GMC will match your donation, dollar-for-dollar up to $12,500 until midnight, December 31, 2016. 3) The GMC Foundation will also match your donation, dollar-for-dollar up to $12,500 until midnight December 31, 2016.

By donating now, you can TRIPLE YOUR GIFT and your investment satisfaction.

Donors: Mario DeLaosa Jr. (HS’70), Gus Pursley, III. (HS’75), David Grant (HS’72, JC’74), Randy New (HS’71, JC’73), Yancey Walker IV (HS’72), LTC Frank Baugh (HS’79), Mervin Green Graham (HS’74) and Britt Owen Byrd (HS’76). Recipients: (front row) Cayla Barnes, Aaron Kirkland, Julia Knowles and Natalie Moody
