Why did the chicken cross the road? To join a speed puzzle race apparently! Puzzle Chicken is one the new mini games speed puzzlers are enjoying at competition events. Players have to accurately guess how quickly they can put together a mini puzzle and then hurry to complete it before the timer runs out - similar to a game of chicken. Finding inspiration in the great outdoors If you’ve fallen in love with our beautiful cover puzzle Camp Sight, you’re not alone. Illustrator Laura Moyer created the artwork after drawing on fond memories of childhood camping trips and a lifelong love of the outdoors. Full of warmth, nostalgia and a touch of surrealism, the design has already been a hit with puzzlers around the world when it featured at a number of international puzzle competitions. Laura has always loved to draw, but it wasn’t until later that she turned her passion into a full-time career. Now, eight years into life as a freelance illustrator, she’s delighted to see her artwork transformed into a jigsaw. A lifelong puzzle fan herself, she says the response from the puzzling community has inspired her to create even more, so watch this space for more from this exciting artist. We have found that puzzlers are often bookish and craftsy folks too, and that’s certainly true of our Positively Puzzling team! EXTREMLY
Most of the puzzle competitions we share in Positively Puzzling take place in village halls, community centres or even hotels —but glaciologist Iben took hers to Antarctica. That sounds like quite literally the coolest puzzle championship on Earth! While working on the European Beyond EPICA ice core project, 1,200 kilometres from the coast and at an altitude of 3,350 metres, Iben organised an unofficial Antarctic Puzzle Championship. Seven scientists from Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, China and Australia took turns tackling the 500-piece Ravensburger Music Room puzzle in temperatures of around -40°C. The extreme conditions presented the puzzlers with additional challenges as Iben explained, “We did the puzzle at 3350 metres altitude where the air is thin, and we get less oxygen to our brains.” For Iben, puzzles have provided new ways to make connections. They have become a way to bring people together across different languages and cultures during months away from home. She now makes a tradition of taking a puzzle on every field expedition, at the time of writing she is on a study trip in Greenland— proving that even at the ends of the Earth, a jigsaw can create a sense of home. Havenly
His magical touch for creating calm, comforting scenes from everyday life has made Steve Read a favourite with puzzlers around the world.
The Merry-Go-Round of Life
Some people stumble into a career. Others, like Steve Read, know exactly what they want to do from an early age. Like the words of the very catchy tune, Steve ‘saw a sign’ - although not in the mystical sense. It was a literal one. Steve began his creative journey as a signwriter, using the trade as a way to immerse himself in the world of art and develop his skills. And if like us, you’re now wondering whether any of those early creations still exist. The answer could well be yes, because one of his most memorable commissions was painting the decorative top panels of a working merry-goround—a colourful project that hinted at the career to come.
Dedication to the Craft
Creativity was a constant throughout Steve’s childhood. He spent countless hours drawing, inventing wacky characters and, even at a young age, he knew he wanted a career in the creative industries. He was not shy about putting in the hard work to get there. “I knew I had talent, but my work wasn’t yet at the required standard,” he recalls. Determined to improve, Steve studied the work of artists he admired, particularly renowned airbrush illustrators Philip Castle and Michael English. He became fascinated by their ability to create highly realistic images using paint—a quality that is now instantly recognisable in his own beautifully detailed artwork and jigsaw puzzle designs. His dedication soon paid off. Before long, Steve signed with artists’ agency MGL, beginning a partnership that has now lasted nearly 20 years. 6

A Puzzling Beginning
Signing with an agent opened the door to exciting new opportunities—one such being very good news for the puzzles all over the world who have fallen in love with his work. His first commission for Ravensburger came in 2007, and since then he has created more than 40 puzzle designs. Among the most iconic is The Cosy Shed from the My Haven series, a scene that perfectly captures Steve’s signature style: warm, welcoming and full of comforting detail. It’s easy to see why so many people dream of curling up with a book in this idyllic retreat. The design is one of the bestsellers in the jigsaw series and this year, the My Haven collection grows to fourteen designs with the addition of The Christmas Shed—another irresistible scene from the master of feel-good imagery. A Room with a View
In 2026, Steve illustrated another captivating collection celebrating the beauty of everyday life. The View from my Window series invites puzzlers to enjoy peaceful outlooks from cosy settings, beginning with a picturesque canal boat and more recently expanding to include a muchloved campervan. Naturally, we couldn’t resist asking Steve about the view from his own studio. “The view looks out onto the garden, and I quite often see muntjac deer wandering through and grazing on the plants. Through a gap in the trees, I can see St Osyth Creek.”

GLOBAL
Connections
Friendships in a fast-paced, puzzling world
Here at Positively Puzzling HQ, we love to hear about the wonderful international friendships that have grown as a result of global speed puzzle competitions. Here we meet speed puzzlers who have made lasting connections despite living countries, and sometimes continents apart.
Andrea, Kasia & James Andrea and Kasia met at the World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship in 2023, and have been firm friends since. Earlier this year, Andrea travelled to the UK to compete alongside Kasia at the first speed puzzle championship in Wales.
Kasia Nickells, United Kingdom @kasiajigs
Andrea Peng, United States @penguins_puzzle
“I met Kasia and James at the world competition in Valladolid in 2023, walking from the train station to our hotel. It felt like fate that we would become friends, because I was also there puzzling with my daughter, Clara. James and I watched both our daughters puzzle in the very first preliminary round! We spent a lot of time getting to know each other at all the events and kept in touch ever since then. Although I had dreamed of going to visit them for years, the Cardiff competition came at just the right time. Coming in first with her at that event is a highlight of my puzzle “career” and that James could be there on the commentary was the icing on the cake! Hopefully we will get the chance to puzzle again. I am already plotting my next trip to the UK.” Andrea and James Nickells
“One of the most amazing aspects of competitive speed puzzling is the wonderful community. I’ve been lucky enough to get to know people from all over the world, all with the same love of jigsaw puzzles. I now have international friends and have been lucky enough to get to puzzle with some of them. One of the highlights of my puzzling is without a doubt competing with the wonderful Andrea Peng from San Francisco.”

“I feel lucky to have made many new friends all over the world puzzling hobby. I have met amazing people that I have connected with puzzling but also on a more personal level too. It is enriching to share and opinions with friends from different cultures, ages and backgrounds.
through my speed not only about thoughts
Wiktor is one of my first international friends and I feel a special connection with him. He is kind and enthusiastic and just a great person. He is always there for me. We have so much fun together.”
Wiktor Kacprzak, Poland @wiktord.puzzler
“There are many people I would love to point out as my international friends but the one that is definitely someone whom I could trust with anything is Hanna. She’s an amazing speed puzzler from Finland that I first met online after creating my instagram account in the second half of 2024. Since the beginning she stood as a role model to many, but above all else she was and still is to this day, one of the nicest and dearest people I know. She was one of the first people to welcome me in the community which I am forever indebted for. Meeting her in person at World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship 2024 was a surreal experience because how is it even possible to feel like you have known someone for ages without ever meeting them? We created such a deep bond that never wavered. Through the years we were each other’s ground to stand on and a friend to stand by.”

History
Meet Lara
Lara has been the Ravensburger historian for two years. Lara is responsible for maintaining the library of puzzles, games and marketing materials for the company.
Every Ravensburger puzzle has a story to tell. Since creating our very first puzzle in 1891, we’ve produced many thousands of different designs, building a remarkable library of puzzling history along the way. We caught up with Lara, our company archivist to find out more.
Firsts and Favourites
Lara’s favourite item in the archive is Geographical Patience – the wooden map puzzle considered to be Ravensburger’s very first jigsaw. Created in 1891, its hand-cut wooden pieces didn’t interlock, but it marked the beginning of our puzzling story.
Interlocking puzzles were launched in 1964, with the first 1000-piece puzzle – today our most popular format across the world - was a bouquet of flowers from 1969.
A life in the day of
With thousands of products to care for – and new additions every year – no two days are the same for Lara. She catalogues our growing archive to help preserve it for future generations, while answering questions about historic products from colleagues, the press and customers. So, if you’re trying to remember the name of a childhood favourite, chances are Lara knows the answer. 22

Festive Feels
Puzzling you can Count on
Here at Positively Puzzling HQ, we don’t think it’s ever too early to talk about all things festive. When we got the chance to chat to Claire Wilson, the artist behind our new puzzle advent calendar, we were beside ourselves with jingle joy – and it was only April. You have designed the new Christmas at Home advent calendar for Ravensburger. It’s full of festive feels and seasonal cosiness, but what are your own favourite Christmas traditions? I really enjoy going out for a Christmas Day walk with my partner and our cocker spaniel, Bobby (who has been featured on the front of the box and is also in one of the puzzles!) followed by some lovely food and a nice glass of wine with friends or family. I also really love to snuggle up on the sofa in front of the fire in festive pyjamas and watch Christmas movies. How did you become an illustrator and designer? I’ve always loved to draw and I used to make my own greeting cards for loved ones when I was little. My love of drawing continued throughout school, college and university and I set up my own design business in 2012 to focus on creating illustrations for cards and stationery.

Festive Feels
A puzzle a day… Just right with your morning brew, our new puzzle advent calendar featuring Claire’s ohso-cosy illustrations, includes twenty-four 56-piece mini jigsaws. Each one invites you into different festive room. When completed, you can connect them all to create an impressive array of seasonal splendour.
How do you create your artwork? My creative process often begins with messy pencil scribbles in a sketchbook which are then transformed into full colour illustrations on my iPad and computer where I like to add in lots of lovely little intricate details and finishes. Is this the first Ravensburger puzzle you have designed? Yes and I was super excited to be selected for this incredible project - I can’t wait to see it out in the world for people to enjoy!
