Helping Corvallis High go green DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic When it comes to taking care of the environment, there is a lot of talk and not a lot of action. Not so for Will Thelen. The Corvallis High senior started the recycling program at his school, and he was busy sorting cans and bottles recently while he talked to a newspaper reporter about his future plans. “I’m training kids today to take over the recycling program next year when I’m gone,” he said. “I’ve been picking it up every week. Hopefully it continues. It’s been fun to be involved with.” Thelen will be attending the University of Montana School of Music this fall on a scholarship. He has been playing piano since he was 9 years old, and he is excited to take his talents to the next level. “I’ve been taking piano lessons from a professor up there,” he said. “It’s a really good program, and getting that higher level should be really cool.” Thelen said he will also study environmental science at UM, because he thinks there are many new career opportunities in the field. “We need to be getting away from oil,” he said. “There are going to be careers in alternative energy and getting rid of pollution. I really want to pursue a natural resources career.” Thelen snowboards at Lost Trail Powder Mountain in his spare time, and he played soccer and tennis in high school. He tries to run several times a week, and he was involved in many extracurricular activities, such as Interact and Aim High. He is pragmatic about his chances of making a career out of playing the piano. “It’s nice because I can approach it realistically,” he said. “As far as being the best, I don’t want that. It’s just something that I like to do. That’s why I’m also going to be studying environmental science. It will be good to get a wide range of classes in college.” Reporter David Erickson can be reached at 363-3300 or at david.erickson@ravallirepublic.com.

Darby graduate plans to attend pre-vet program DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic Josh McCrossin developed a love of working with animals while growing up on a cattle ranch in Sula. That’s why the Darby senior has decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine at Carroll College in Helena this fall. “I love ranch work, and I love working with animals,” he said. “I grew up on a ranch, and I decided the prevet program at Carroll would be a good way to keep around animals.” Another thing McCrossin has learned to love is sports. He played football, basketball and track for the Tigers, and he plans to someday become a coach. “I want to be a high school football coach,” he said. “My dad is a coach, so that’s part of it, too. I’m always helping out with him, and I like helping out the younger kids. I love getting the young kids interested in football. Playing sports and doing well in school isn’t always easy. The only way to get through it is to prioritize and understand what you want to do and what you like to do.” McCrossin, who will graduate with a 3.77 grade-point average, said going to school in the state capital will suit him just fine, because he’s also interested in government. “I really liked being on the student council,” he said. “I participated in the Youth Legislature program, and we got to do a little mock session. We made our own bills and went through the entire law-making process. It was a lot of fun and really interesting to see how it works.” Getting his education at a small school in a small town was beneficial in many ways, McCrossin explained. “Darby is a great school, for sure,” he said. “The small numbers really helped out with getting personal time with the teachers. It’s a small community, and you do get to meet everyone and know everyone.” The pre-vet program won’t be easy, McCrossin said, but he’s ready for the challenge. “I have high expectations for myself,” he said. “Only the cream of the crop get through the program. I figure I have a head start on a lot of kids because I grew up working around animals. I figure if I ask a lot of questions and stay interested, I will be fine.” Reporter David Erickson can be reached at 363-3300 or at david.erickson@ravallirepublic.com.

Pursuing the dream of Georgia Tech DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic Shea Hawkins has always had an affinity for computers and science. So this fall, when he enrolls at Georgia Tech to pursue his dream of becoming either a biomedical engineer or a nuclear physicist, it will be the fulfillment of a lifelong goal. However, the Florence-Carlton High School senior said he believes his interest in the field is due to nature rather than nurture. “For a long time, I enjoyed math and science, and I ended up wanting to go into one of those fields,” Hawkins explained. “I started building computers when I was in sixth grade. But my parents weren’t scientists or anything. I don’t think it was anything conscience that led me to pursue science. It was more innate than being influenced by my parents.” Hawkins said he hopes to pursue a research and development career after he graduates from the prestigious university. He said that getting accepted by Georgia Tech was an honor, but it took a lot of hard work in high school. “It’s not incredibly difficult to get in, like an Ivy-league school,” he said. “But it’s on the higher end. A lot of it was doing well in school. I focused a lot on the ACT, the SAT subject tests, and retook everything until I got pretty good scores. Other than that, I wrote essays, took a lot of extracurriculars and I made sure I was actively involved in the community.” Hawkins, who graduated with a 4.1 grade-point average, said Florence-Carlton High School gave him a good head start on college. “Florence prepared me really well,” he said. “The science courses were excellent. They were maybe a little lacking on extracurriculars, but they prepared me very well core-wise.” Hawkins is a member of the National Honor Society, and in his spare time he likes to hike, lift weights and build computers. He said that the next big boom is going to be in the applications that stem from computers. “I think the programming market is saturated and computer engineering is done,” he said. “I think a huge focus is going to be on application of computers, things based on computers is going to be explosive.” Hawkins said he has never been to the Georgia Tech campus before, but he is excited about his future. “We’re going down there in a couple of weeks to see the school,” he said. “I’m really excited to get started.” Reporter David Erickson can be reached at 363-3300 or at david.erickson@ravallirepublic.com.

Singing her way to the top DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic Not many people have to stand in front of a group of people and sing to get into college, but Hamilton High School senior Kelsey Della Silva did just that. After sending a DVD of her vocal performances to the Brigham Young University School of Music in Provo, Utah, professors there told Della Silva that she was a finalist. There was one catch, however: She had to come to the school and perform live. “I had to do a live audition,” she said. “They only accept 10 people every year. So in front of all the professors, I sang ‘Le Colibri.’” Della Silva said she wasn’t nervous about performing in front of her prospective college instructors. “I just have the attitude of whatever happens, happens,” she said. “I got a letter in the mail a few weeks later saying I got in. I feel really honored - especially because only 10 people make it every year.” Della Silva, who will graduate with a 3.85 grade-point average, has been a strong competitor on the Lady Broncs tennis, cheerleading and cross-country teams, and she sings in the school choir. “I’ve been singing since I was a little girl,” she said. “Mrs. Leonardi really influenced me and gave me a lot of opportunities.” Della Silva, a soprano, has performed in “Les Miserables,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Guys and Dolls,” and she had a solo during a performance for an episode of PBS’ “Celebrate America!” which featured school choirs from around the Bitterroot Valley. One of the highlights of her young career came when she tried out for a solo while the Hamilton concert choir was in New York City for National Youth Choir. “I was picked, so I sang a solo in Carnegie Hall,” she said. She said she had thought about pursuing a career in elementary education, but decided that music school was too good to pass up. “I might try to take other classes if I have time,” she said. “Because vocal performance is such a time sucker, I can’t really do everything. I felt like I should pursue music since it’s such a good school. I hope to perform, and I want to try out for Broadway stuff. When I have a family, I want to do private voice lessons from home, so I can raise kids and still bring in an income.” Della Silva said she likes the Provo area and has family there. She has to be at BYU by Aug. 15 to try out for the ensemble and has already been asked to be in the school opera this fall. “One of the professors contacted me to send a DVD,” she said. “I sent it, and he said he wants me to be one of the lead characters. I’ve never been in an opera before, but it’s all in English.” Reporter David Erickson can be reached at 363-3300 or at david.erickson@ravallirepublic.com.

Stevensville student prevails DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic She may have lost her hearing, but Addie Tom didn’t lose her ambition. Tom started losing her hearing when she was 7 years old, but that hasn’t stopped the Stevensville High School student from graduating fourth in her class with a 4.1 grade-point average, volunteering around town and making plans to pursue a career in nursing. The hearing loss began when Tom was given a medication for an unrelated health problem. She never let it stop her though. An active member of her school and the community, Tom has learned to cope with her hearing problem. She wears hearing aids in both ears, and during class, her teachers wear a special FM radio transmitter that sends what they are saying directly into Tom’s ear. Her mother also helped her by taking notes in class. “It really wasn’t too much of a problem,” Tom explained. “My teachers were always really helpful if I couldn’t understand what they were saying.” This fall, Tom plans to attend Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash., to pursue a degree in nursing. “It has very good academic programs, and they offered me one of the best financial programs,” she said. Tom has earned a letter all four years of high school for putting in 100 hours of community service, and she was a regional finalist for a Coca-Cola Scholarship, the only one from Montana. In her spare time, Tom dabbles in art, hiking, backpacking and soccer. “I generally play all over the field,” she said. “I like to be outdoors as often as possible.” Reporter David Erickson can be reached at 363-3300 or david.erickson@ravallirepubic.com. Victor students get a head start DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic

Victor seniors Amanda Segar and Fischer Elliott decided to get a jump-start on college while they were still in high school. That’s why they both attended the Schwanke Honors Institute at the University of Montana during the summer. In fact, Segar liked the program so much, she attended it twice. Living in the dormitories with students from all over the country, the two Victor students got a taste of campus life while earning college credit. They attended classes in the morning, then participated in outdoor activities in the afternoon. Elliott took classes in chemistry, creative writing and media arts. He has applied to AmeriCorps in New York City, where he hopes to help underprivileged kids in innercity schools. “It’s really important to help the next generation of citizens get on their feet,” Elliott explained. “These kids generally live in poor neighborhoods. Also, I really want to live in a city.” Segar said she plans to attend the Parsons School of Graphic Design in New York City, as well as the University of Montana, to pursue writing and photography, and possibly an entertainment management degree. She said attending the Schwanke Institute helped prepare her for the path to a career in arts. She is interested in fiction and fantasy, like the Harry Potter and Eragon series. “I love the writing program I took,” she said. “I learned about the depths of genres and experienced a lot of new authors.” Reporter David Erickson can be reached at 363-3300 or at david.erickson@ravallirepublic.com.
