their year at the beautiful setting along the meandering Bitterroot River against a backdrop of towering majestic mountains. There are 2.5 miles of nature trails in the refuge’s wildlife viewing area, including a half-mile-long wheelchair-accessible pathway that leads to the Bitterroot River.

Best Day Hike: Blodgett Canyon The scenic hike through Blodgett Canyon’s sheer cliffs, towering peaks and shimmering creek is a perennial favorite for Bitterroot trail hounds. The hiking trail offers adventure to all varieties of hikers, while some choose to challenge themselves with all-day trips to enjoy roaring waterfalls or spend a night fishing at the lake or in a nearby beautiful meadow. The trail is laced with wildflowers and if you’re lucky, you might even find some huckleberries ready for eating on some nearby bushes. Blodgett Canyon is a must-do hike for everyone who calls this place home. It’s also a great place to send the relatives when they come for a summer visit. Best Birdwatching: Lee Metcalf The Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge continues to be birdwatchers’ first choice in the Bitterroot Valley. Established in 1963 as a haven for wildlife, the refuge was named for Stevensville High School graduate and longtime Montana senator and conservationist Lee Metcalf. With a mission to manage habitat for a diversity of wildlife, the refuge focuses its efforts on providing a home for all varieties of migratory birds. On almost any day, you’ll find folks strolling pathways with binoculars in hand or slowly driving by the large ponds situated near the refuge headquarters. They are hoping to observe the waterfowl, shore and songbirds that spend at least part of

Best Mountain Bike Trail: Como Ridge It’s no surprise that mountain bikers in the valley have chosen Como Ridge as their biking destination in the Bitterroot. The Lake Como Trail offers a challenge for mountain bikers with the right equipment. It has eight miles of varied terrain around the Lake Como Loop. If that’s not enough, the trail connects to the 14-mile-long Rock Creek Trail. The scenery around the lake is stunning, but you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled to the trail. And if you work up a good sweat, you can always take a plunge into the inviting lake waters and ease your sore muscles with a rest on the sandy beaches around the lake. It is $5 to park a car at the popular beachfront, but it’s worth every dime. Best Camping Spot: Lake Como Lake Como’s inviting waters, spectacular scenery and easy access to miles of backcountry trails make it the Bitterroot’s favorite camping spot once again. In fact, Lake Como is one of the most visited National Forest campgrounds in the Northwest. With two campgrounds, a horse camp and now a group camping site, the Lake Como area has a lot to offer a wide variety of campers. The fee is $14 a day plus a $2 surcharge for hook-ups and there is a maximum stay limit of 14 days. The fee at the horse camp is $8. The group site requires a reservation, the fee is $5 a car with a minimum of five cars and the maximum stay is three days. Visitors are cautioned to be “Bear Aware” and make sure to store food away from campsites.

Best Horseback Riding Trail and Swimming Hole: Lake Como Lake Como has something for everyone. While it has won Best Swimming Hole and Best Mountain Bike Trail for three years running, this is the first time in a while that it has added Best Horseback Riding Trail into the recreational mix. But what better combination is there than finishing off a hot, dusty ride, whether it be on bike or horse, with a cool plunge in the lake? The Rock Creek Trailhead is on the south side of Lake Como. There is a parking area for stock users and it is close to the Rock Creek Horse Camp. The trailhead offers access to the Rock Creek Trail #580 to Elk Lake or can be used to do the 7-mile loop around Lake Como. The Rock Creek trail #580 is more than 11 miles long, ending at Idaho State Line. The Selway Bitterroot Wilderness boundary is located approximately 1/2 mile beyond the lake. Riders can see wildlife and osprey but should be warned they are sharing the trail with hikers and mountain bike riders.

Culture/Activities/Issues

Local Issue: Commissioners If there’s one thing that can be said about residents of Ravalli County it’s that they are passionate about their politics. Never so has it been as evident. In last November elections, the voters of Ravalli County said sayonara to two Democratic and one Independent commissioners in favor of three Republicans. With the Republican sweep in the elections, the commission was transformed into a five-person Republican majority. And while the new commissioners were voted in on a large majority, it doesn’t mean they please everyone. And that is why the commissioners were chosen as this year’s most pressing local issue. Since January, the commissioners have taken on tough tasks like replacing a resigned treasurer as well as rescinding actions of the past commission like subdivision regulations and airport expansion. No matter where you stand on the issues, things are sure to get heated in the com-

missioners’ meeting room when discussing any number of contentious topics in Ravalli County.

Nonprofit: BEAR There is no better place than the Bitterroot to get out and enjoy all that the outdoors has to offer. And the nonprofit Bitterroot Ecological Awareness Resource knows how to take advantage of that in order to do some good. BEAR, which served 580 Bitterroot kids last year, mentors youth though outdoor adventures as well as in-school activities that provide examples of healthy adult and peer role models while exposing kids to the vast wilderness surrounding Ravalli County. BEAR also puts on numerous summer camps that get kids out fishing, hiking, biking and exploring western Montana. A new program for BEAR this summer will be Peaks to Peninsula, which will take kids from the Bitterroot to the Olympic Peninsula, studying different environments along the

way as well as performing a service learning project. Annual Festival or Event: Bitterroot Brewfest In its 17th year, the Bitterroot Brewfest is back on top as the best festival after missing the top mark the last two years. “This year, we plan to stay on top,” said Brewfest organizer Rick O’Brien. This year, in addition to the 40 different flavors of beer from 20 different microbreweries and commemorative glasses, festival goers can work up a thirst dancing to the music of Portland pop-funk band, Keegan Smith. “We’ve really upscaled this year, bringing in an out-of-state band of that caliber,” O’Brien said. “The double-header of him with local favorite Joan Zen will be great.” After last year’s crowd of 1,500, O’Brien said they’re expecting around 2,000. “We’ve received a lot of support from festival goers, GlaxoSmithKline and the Montana Brewers Association,” O’Brien said. “Hopefully it just keeps growing.”

The Bitterroot Brewfest is July 23 from 3 to 10 p.m. in downtown Hamilton. Best Art Gallery: Art Focus Fine Arts and Framing Robert Neaves knows good art, and apparently people in the Bitterroot know they can find it at his Hamilton gallery because they’ve chosen Art Focus as the best gallery for the fourth year in a row. Neaves has focused on exhibiting the best of local art for 17 years so patrons can rely on his experience. And while some other galleries have closed as the economy has tightened, his formula for keeping art alive seems to be working. “I try to show the work of local artists,” he said. “I think it’s important to give people a real place to show their work.” Art Focus Fine Arts and Framing is at 217 W. Main St. in Hamilton. Thing the Valley Needs Most: Jobs/Kids’ Activities Not surprisingly, Ravalli County residents cited jobs as one of the thing the valley needs most. Many jobs were in construc-

tion related to the housing bubble and they probably aren’t going to return soon. But the county is not unique in that respect. Ravalli County is actually doing better than other counties in Montana, such as Lincoln County. But with federal, state and local governments continuing to cut funding, the county will probably lose a few more jobs before things get better.

A few offerings have improved the selection of kids’ activities. The Willow Springs water park opened in June in Florence Park offering Bitterroot children a place to cool off on hot summer days. Various organizations offer summer camps but for children spread out along the Bitterroot, the great outdoors may still be the only sure source of outdoor fun.

Faces Best Coach: Mark Albert/Hamilton High School For the third year in a row, Bitterroot residents have voted Hamilton High’s Mark Albert the best coach. Over his 14-year career, Albert has coached boys’ and girls’ basketball and cross country. Albert said his love of kids keep him wearing his coaching hat. “I just love kids,” he said. “Coaching is something I really enjoy… It’s a blessing and truly an honor to be around kids and do something you really love.” Albert said he has been especially proud that Hamilton has fielded the largest cross country team of any school for a number of years. “We take a lot of pride in our cross country team, being one of the biggest in the state,” he said. “I get and recruit as many as I can.” When he’s not coaching, Albert teaches high school math.

Best Chiropractor: Barnings Chiropractic Barnings Chiropractic has won the best chiropractor title at least six or seven times, which is more than half the time Mandy Barnings and her husband Jack have been practicing in the Bitterroot Valley. “Even though we’ve won before, we’re still excited to get the award each year,” Mandy said. “It helps reinforce that we’re doing the right thing and patients trust us.” Barnings Chiropractic offers standard chiropractic remedies but the couple individualizes the techniques to the needs of each patient. Mandy said that after expanding the practice for a number of years, the business has settled into a stable, comfortable level in its 11th year. “That’s good because our plan is to stay here until we die,” Mandy said.

Best Musician: Joan Zen For six years running, Bitterrooters have selected Joan Zen as their favorite musician. Joan Zen along with her husband Jason Hicks have been wooing music fans for several years in any number of venues around Western Montana, singing at private affairs, community fund-raisers or capacity crowds in local hot spots. Her soul, rock and funk sound continues to attract fans of all ages as she adds popular covers to her repertoire but makes them her own. She is a refreshing alternative to country, rock or honky-tonk bands that sometimes dominate the local scene. She often appears at the Bitter Root Brewery in Hamilton and the Blacksmith Brewery in Stevensville, along with The Office in Hamilton and some Missoula bars.

wall so the men and the women don’t have to see each other, which makes them more comfortable,” Richie said. “In the men’s area, I even have an old barber’s chair.” Richie said she doesn’t give shaves but she can give any cut, and apparently her customers like what she does. Unlike many Bitterroot’s Best award recipients, Richie is a first-timer. “I am just amazed about this,” Richie said. “I didn’t even know about the category.” Sharon Richie Barber/Stylist is in The Mill at 140 Cherry St. in Hamilton. Best Barber: Sharon Richie

Best Cosmetologist: Linda Trotter

Sharon Richie set out to prove that being a barber is not just a man’s occupation. Now voted the Bitterroot’s Best Barber, she’s proven that and then some. Richie has had her own barbershop in the Mill building for three years, but she’s been taking a little off the top for longer than that. She’s been cutting hair in the Bitterroot Valley for 16 years and used to own SK Kuts, where she cut men’s as well as women’s hair. But after a while, she wanted to downsize. “I now have two stations separated by a

While most people look to branch out on their own with time and experience, Linda Trotter has surrendered her business in favor of working for someone else. But all that means is that Cabanas gets the benefit of being able to offer the skills of the Bitterroot’s Best cosmetologist. A cosmetologist is licensed to work on not only hair, but also skin and nails. But hair is still what Trotter likes best. “Cuts and colors are my favorite,” Trotter

said. Trotter has been cutting and coloring for a while. She started her first salon a few decades ago and ended up working with the motion picture industry. But then, as with many, life took her in a different direction for a while. She returned to cosmetology five years ago with her own business, Club West. It had a successful run, but now that her children are grown, she wants time for other endeavors. “I just sold the business three months ago,” Trotter said. “I was ready to lighten my load and not be tied down to a business.” Trotter said she intends to keep doing the work she’s good at, but otherwise she’ll be out on the river or the trails. “I feel fortunate to be doing a job I like and I have good relationships with my clients,” Trotter said. Linda Trotter can be reached at Cabanas on 902 S. First St. in Hamilton. Best Dentist: Greg Seltzer Dr. Greg Seltzer has been peering into Bitterroot mouths for 31 years, so he has

three other Bitterroot’s Best certificates on his wall. But he was still happy to be adding a fourth this year. He attributes his popularity to the fact he takes the time to educate his patients about their dental problems and needs. “I’m a very verbal dentist,” Seltzer said. “I make sure that the patient plays an active role in the decision process.” Seltzer also realizes the limitations of practicing in a more rural setting – fewer specialists are nearby. So he tries to offer his patients as many procedures as he can so they don’t have to travel to Missoula. Seltzer offers all general dentistry procedures but he also does all but the most complex tooth extractions and root canals. “I’m doing what I can to allow people to stay in the valley,” Seltzer said. Dr. Greg Seltzer’s office is at 215 N. 10th St. in Hamilton. Best Mechanic: Parr Auto Robert Parr is another first-time winner of a Bitterroot’s Best award and he is a worthy recipient.

It came as a surprise, however, and he initially thought the award was a practical joke. Parr is a self-made businessman who has owned his auto repair shop next to his home in Corvallis since 1996, although he’s worked as a mechanic in the valley since 1990. “I’m a one-man show,” Parr said. “It’s both a blessing and a curse.” He sinks or swims on his personal reputation and he’s done the equivalent of swimming the English Channel because he is honest with his customers. “I work on every kind of car, but if I run into something I can’t handle, I’ll tell people what their best option is,” Parr said. “Sometimes it may not be me.” Home businesses operate a little differently and Parr said customers often try to conduct business after hours because he’s home. He said he has to be careful and budget his time so it doesn’t overtake the rest of his life. But it has benefits. “I didn’t meet one customer in person for three years because he’d drop his car off early and pick it up late, just leaving a check in my mailbox.” Parr said. “It’s nice to have

that option and many of my customers end up being friends.” Parr Auto is at 1140 Eastside Highway in Corvallis. Best Employer: Hamilton School Dist #3 & Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital Health and education are two of the most important issues today, so it’s only natural

Ravalli Republic, Friday, June 17, 2011 - 9

that two of the valley’s employers that provide those vital institutions were voted this year’s best employers in the Bitterroot. “We’re so excited. That’s just wonderful,” said Deb Morris, director of human resources at Marcus Daly. The employer of about 440 has devoted itself to teamwork this year. Splitting its employees in to six teams of 10 to 12, the teams are tasked with things like deciding dress code policy or hospital standards. “We’re trying to push ownership down to employees,” Morris said. “And I think the community’s starting to see that. “We’re just very proud.” The Hamilton School district encompasses five schools, ranging from kindergarten up to high school seniors, provides quality education to Hamilton’s youth. Every employee, from the teachers to the secretaries to the coaches, make a difference in Hamilton kids’ lives every day. And that is definitely something to be proud of. Best Massage Therapist: Denise Rose Denise Rose is a Bitterroot favorite, dem-

onstrated by this, her sixth award as a massage therapist. But her loyal fans had better schedule as many appointments as they can in the next few months because she is moving on to another phase of life. “I was hired as the executive director of the Hamilton Players so I’m slowly weaning my customers,” Rose said. Rose said she plans to give her last massage later this year. Rose has long had a full calendar of massages at Barnings Chiropractic, and now that she’s cutting back her hours, she said it’s hard to get an appointment to see her. “It’s been good but there are other fabulous massage therapists in the Bitterroot,” Rose said. Barnings Chiropractic is at 246 Marcus St. in Hamilton. Best Veterinarian: Dr. Joe Melnarik With the strong love of our four-legged friends in this valley, pet owners definitely know which vet to trust. For a second year in a row, pet lovers have

selected Valley Pet Clinic’s Dr. Joe Melnarik as the Bitterroot’s best veterinarian. Melnarik has been a vet for 17 years and his clients trust his expertise as well as his compassion for their beloved animals. Valley Pet Clinic is located at 1420 S. 1st St. in Hamilton. Best Volunteer/Unsung Hero: Clark Jones, Judith Paul, Marvin Parker, Vonni Gulli In a valley full of compassion and love for others, it’s obviously hard to come up with just one volunteer who stands out above the rest.

10 - Ravalli Republic, Friday, June 17, 2011

People in the Bitterroot are so generous with their precious time, giving up countless hours to help others in our community. This year, Bitterroot’s Best voters couldn’t choose just one volunteer from the bunch. So a big congratulations to Clark Jones, Judith Paul, Marvin Parker and Vonni Guilli for being recognized for their hard work and dedication to our neighbors in the valley. Best Salesperson/Rep: Steffani Hakes, Funkie ‘Lil Shaque Being born and raised in the Bitterroot has its advantages. For Steffani Hakes, owner of Funkie ‘Lil Shaque, the Hamilton native points to her Bitterroot roots as a big reason why her Hamilton shop has been successful. “My customers are what keeps me in business,” she said. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I’m at.” And their loyalty to Hakes earned praise from the shop owner. “I love my customers. A lot of my customers are even from when I’ve worked at other places.” Funkie ‘Lil Shaque, which opened three

years ago on the south end of town, moved to downtown Hamilton last year. “I can’t believe I’ve been here a year already. It’s crazy,” Hakes said. While starting the shop out as a dollar store, Hakes said she is transitioning to different lines of products such as nostalgic humor magnets and cups, Montana and Bitterroot souvenirs and a wider range of jewelry, hair accessories and body jewelry. “I think it’s going to be a good change. I’m super excited,” she said. Funkie ‘Lil Shaque is located at 248 W. Main St. in Hamilton. Best Teacher: Kerry Hanson, 3rd Grade Daly Elementary There’s no denying that Kerry Hanson appreciates being named the valley’s best teacher for the second year in a row. “You are kidding,” she responded when given the good news. “You’re going to make me cry.” But the third grade teacher at Daly Elementary, who just finished her 23rd year teaching, was quick to give credit to her fellow Daly teachers.

“The Daly staff is absolutely incredible, in particular my third-grade team,” Hanson said. “We do so much together.”

“It’s a really unique team that I work with. They are over-the-top incredible.” Of Hanson’s 23 years as a teacher, she has spent 17 in the third grade. “In the third grade, they are gaining independence but yet they still need you, they still love you. You still get hugs,” she said. And while there are many things Hanson enjoys about her job, it’s the bonds with her kids that she likes the best. “I love the relationship that you get to build with the students,” she said. “When they’re struggling with something and the light bulb goes off, it’s fun to see them finally grasp that.”

from beads as well as creating pins and neck pieces. “That’s been kind of fun. It’s a new thing for me to do,” Don Diego said. The Stevensville artists notes her unique way of seeing the world as the strength of her work. “I’ve tried real hard to develop my own technique and my own style and my own way of seeing things so people know my work just by seeing it,” she said. “I’ve been very blessed to have people purchase my stuff and put it in their house.”

Best Visual Artist: Patricia Don Diego

Helen Montgomery proved this year that her nod last year as the valley’s best waitress was no fluke. The owner of the Sundance Cheesecake Café in Hamilton has been named the valley’s top server for the second year in a row. This year’s award came as a bit of a shock to Montgomery, who took over running the Sundance about six years ago from her parents. She gives credit to her loyal patrons. “It’s surprising, actually,” Montgomery

When speaking about her body of work, it is easy to see why Bitterroot voters chose Patricia Don Diego as this year’s best visual artist in the valley. She is particularly noted for her designs that she paints on furniture, which includes a lot of beautiful patterns, mountain scenery and buffalo, to name a few. She said she also dabbles in wood carving and most recently has started sewing images

I think it makes a different when you know your customers.” Montgomery is also quick to credit her mother. “We care more than a typical employee would to make sure things go well,” Montgomery said. Best Reporter/Valley Voice: Steve Fullerton, KLYQ Longevity is definitely a plus when it comes to the Bitterroot Valley. Steve Fullerton, this year’s Valley Voice, was born in the Bitterroot and has been working at KLYQ off and on for over 30 years. Fullerton does all the live programming for the station, which includes a morning news show at 7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday as well as Friday’s events show at 8 a.m. And then there’s the website. “We try to really do a complete website with all sorts of local stuff. I do that about as much as I do on the air,” Fullerton said. Fullerton has found that many Bitterrooters still enjoy their radio. “A lot of people still listen to the radio here,” he said. “It’s very easy to talk to people here. It’s just the way we are in the Bitterroot.” And while there is a wide range of topics that Fullerton covers, he’s a news man at heart. “When it’s forest fire season or flood sea-

son, I’ll work extra hours to get the story out.” Best Physical Therapist: Thomas Parkhill, Hamilton Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation Center There aren’t many times in your life when you feel more vulnerable than when you need physical therapy, for whatever the reason. Not only are Bitterrooters looking for physical therapists who are knowledgeable but ones who are caring and compassionate as well. And Thomas Parkhill of Hamilton Physical Therapy fits that bill. Parkhill earned his doctorate of physical therapy in 2006 from the University of Montana. Outpatient orthopedics is Parkhill’s main passion, but his wide ranging experience has given him a broad understanding of the wide scope of physical therapy. And, according to Hamilton Physical Therapy’s website, Parkhill is constantly trying to improve his skills with continuing education courses.

You can visit Parkhill at Hamilton Physical Therapy at the Canyons Athletic Club location at 472 Tammany Lane in Hamilton.

Places

Best Outdoor Dining: The Edge Restaurant

Best Anniversary Spot: Broad Axe Lodge

Best Place To Get Married: Daly Mansion

You’d be hard pressed not to find a restaurant with beautiful views in the Bitterroot. The beauty of the valley is breathtaking no matter where you are. But this year, the Edge Restaurant & Sports Bar takes the cake for the best outdoor dining experience in the valley. With unobstructed views of the majestic Bitterroot Mountains, the Edge’s patio is the perfect place to put your feet up, relax with an ice cold drink or tasty meal and take in the spectacular beauty the Bitterroot has to offer. And if you’re scared you’ll miss the big game while enjoying the outdoors, you can always peek your head in and catch highlights on one of the Edge’s many televisions. The Edge is located at 140 Bitterroot Plaza Drive in Hamilton.

When it comes to anniversaries, it’s good to go big and pull out all the stops. And the Broad Ax Lodge and Restaurant will you to do just that. When you’re showing your significant other how much you can on your special day, the Broad Axe Lodge in Sula is the perfect location. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, it is a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Where else can you eat in a beautiful dining room while watching bighorn sheep, deer and elk grazing on nearby hillsides? Where else can you stay in spacious cabins near the meandering Bitterroot River, fly fishing, hiking trails and hot springs? If this isn’t the romantic hideaway you’ve always wanted to treat your honey to then we don’t know what else is. The Broad Axe Lodge and Restaurant is located at 1237 East Fork Road in Sula.

Over the years, many couples have entered the gates of the Daly Mansion only to emerge a few hours later as newlyweds. The mansion remains popular today as a place to tie the knot. Driving the corridor of maple trees that lines the entrance to the historic grounds, it becomes obvious that this is someplace special. One can almost hear the gentle ghosts of bygone couples joining in with each modern bride and groom, echoing the promise of the future: “I do.” From the carefully manicured lawns to the regal mansion with its pillars and porches, the mansion property makes an elegant backdrop for wedding photos and memories. The Daly Mansion is located at 251 Eastside Highway near Hamilton.

as they rekindle the glory of the mansion’s heyday. Best Place to Meet Men and Women: The Office/Silver Coin

Best Historical Spot: Daly Mansion It’s hard for any spot to beat the Daly Mansion when it comes to historical significance. Harkening back to the days of the Copper Kings, the mansion represents the past glory of the Bitterroot Valley while maintaining a tie with the once-thriving mining city of Butte. Recognizing the significance of the place, the state of Montana purchased the grounds in 1986 to preserve it for future generations. The 46-acre property continues to be popular for events such as weddings and festivals while offering its own selection of historical enactments, lectures and education. Visitors can take a guided tour of the grounds, which include an arboretum, during the summer until October. An army of around 80 volunteers keep the mansion looking good, a testament to the love many county residents have for this historic gem. And on occasion, they get the opportunity to don petticoats and string ties

Online dating has taken off in the past decade, but there’s nothing better than meeting someone face-to-face. Meeting a stranger across a crowded room is so much more exciting than reading someone’s statistics on a sterile website. For those who still want the real thing, Bitterrooters have voted The Office as the best place to meet that special someone. Or at least have the chance to. Manager Gabriel Diaz said it’s probably because his bar caters to anyone and everyone, so a wide diversity of people visit the place. “More than anything, there’s no set crowd,” Diaz said. “And we have the best outdoor deck in town.” That increases the odds of finding someone with whom to at least spend a fun evening. The Silver Coin is at 109 W. Main St. in Hamilton. Best Romantic Dinner: Skalkaho Steakhouse After winning Best Atmosphere and Best Steak a few years ago, the Skalkaho Steakhouse has risen this year to win best romantic dinner. Having a good steak and a nice atmosphere are a good start. Eight miles southeast of Hamilton, the Skalkaho Steakhouse is surrounded by the

From sirloin and ribeye to steak and lobster, the meal will satisfy as well as the company. Owners John and Sandy Rose are used to catering weddings so romance comes naturally in this spot along the Skalkaho. The Skalkaho Steakhouse is at mile marker 7 on the Skalkaho Highway. Best Getaway (within a half-hour drive): Lost Horse Creek Lodge For those with vacation time who are looking to save a little money, the Lost Horse Creek Lodge makes for a satisfying staycation. Whether you’re looking for a rustic Montana experience or something a little more luxurious, the Lodge has what you’re looking for. In the summer, visitors can stay in rustic cabins for $59 a night or elevate their stay to a honeymoon spa suite for $149 a night. Located halfway between Hamilton and Darby and less than 2 miles from the Bitterroot Forest, the Lodge offers access to many outdoor activities. Depending on the time of year, the Lodge can offer guided flyfishing, horseback riding, snowmobiling and rafting tours. Then at the end of the day, guests can enjoy fine dining in the restaurant. The Lost Horse Creek Lodge is at 1000 Lost Horse Road, off U.S. Route 93.

Best Atmosphere/View and Best Steak: Skalkaho Steakhouse After winning Best Atmosphere and Best Steak a few years ago, Skalkaho Steakhouse has risen this year to take both titles back along with best romantic dinner. Having a good steak and a nice atmosphere are a good start. Eight miles southeast of Hamilton, the Steakhouse is surrounded by the wooded canyon carved by Skalkaho Creek. Picture windows surround diners in natural beauty and provide opportunities for wildlife sightings as the sun sets. The restaurant is mostly family-run so there’s a down-home touch to the fine steak offerings. Best Prime Rib and Dinner Splurge: Victor Steakhouse If there’s one thing that Montanans know, it’s beef. So when Montanans find a place that knows how to cook some cow, word gets around. And for the past few years, the words have been “Victor Steakhouse.” “Obviously, I’m pleased,” said owner Kim

Food

Gibson. “I think it’s the quality of beef that we use, the way that our cooks prepare it and the seasoning we use.” Prime rib is one of the top cuts of meat, so it costs a little more. But if it’s done right, people will splurge to cut into a slab of rare prime rib and top it off with some horse radish. Man cannot live on beef alone so the steakhouse offers plenty of delectable sides and desserts to top off that special meal. The Victor Steakhouse is at 2426 Meridian Road in Victor.

Fast service means you’re out the door and on your way home in time for whatever else calls. Nap’s Grill is at 220 N. 2nd St. in Hamilton.

Best Take-out and Best Salad: Nap’s Grill Manager Brian Ojala is always surprised when a burger place is recognized for its salad. But Bitterroot residents think enough of Nap’s Mandarin Chicken salad that it is once again the Best in the Bitterroot. Ojala isn’t going to complain. “That’s sweet,” he said. Ojala said it is dressed up just right with a house oil-and-vinegar dressing that has been around for quite a while, but why mess with success? “It’s an old recipe that’s just caught on,” Ojala said. It’s done more than caught on; it’s held. And apparently, if Bitterroot residents have their way, it will hold the salad top spot for years to come. As far as take-out, this isn’t Chinese food in cardboard containers. People can get any sandwich, salad or sirloin or chicken platter to go, along with fries or onion rings.

Best Dessert: Sundance Cheesecake Cafe What’s in a name? Apparently quite a bit for the Sundance Cheesecake Café. Yet again, the Hamilton dessert haven has been named Bitterroot’s best dessert by our readers and it’s not hard to see why. They have cheesecakes, yes. But if you’re not in the mood for their rich and delicious assortment of more than 40 kinds of cheesecake, there are other options to satisfy your sweet tooth. You can try a slice from their large selection of pies. Or how about trying one of their many ice cream dishes to cool you off on a hot summer day? Or for something a little different, take a bite of one of their delicious éclairs.

Ravalli Republic, Friday, June 17, 2011 - 17

But you’ll just have to come in and see for yourself what makes Sundance Cheesecake Café a perennial Bitterroot Valley dessert destination. The Sundance Cheesecake Café is located at 900 S. First St. in Hamilton. Best Hospitable Restaurant: Sundance Cheesecake Cafe Hamilton’s Sundance Cheesecake Café has been around since 1977. And in that time, it has amassed quite a following of loyal, local customers. So for owner Helen Montgomery, being a hospitable restaurant comes naturally when all of her customers feel like family. “A lot of it has to do with the fact that my family has had this restaurant since I was a little girl,” Montgomery said. “A lot of our customers are just like family anymore.” And that family feeling has paid off for Montgomery and her crew, who were voted the Bitterroot’s most hospitable restaurant. The Sundance Cheesecake Café is located at 900 S. First St. in Hamilton.

Best Hot Wings: Cowboy Troy’s There are all different kinds of hot wings out there. And everyone has a different preference. Some are the “give me the mildest ones you’ve got” wing eaters. Then there are the ones of the “bring on the pain!” variety. No matter where you fall in that spectrum, Cowboy Troy’s in Victor has you covered. Cowboy Troy’s boasts 10 flavors of wings on its menu. From mildest to spiciest, they’ve got barbecue, teriyaki, buffalo, plum and pepper, Thai chili, mango habanero, spicy and sweet, hot buffalo, crazy hot and OUCH!!!!! And it’s not just the wings that will leave you coming back for more. Cowboy Troy’s has their own house-made ranch, blue cheese and barbecue sauce for dipping. And to top it off, all wings are served with their very own fried chips. So whether you can handle your heat with the best of them, or prefer a milder flavor, Cowboy Troy’s has you covered. Happy eating! Cowboy Troy’s is located at 2359 U.S. Highway 93 in Victor.

Best Lunch Under $5: Taco Del Sol Quick, cheap and delicious – three qualities every hard working Bitterrooter looks for in their meals. Luckily for those of us in the valley, Taco del Sol has that combination down pact. Its simple, yet flavorful menu is full of options for $5 and under that will leave you more than satisfied. In the mood for some seafood? Try their fish burrito, featuring bake Alaskan cod and creamy white sauce. Maybe it’s something a little more traditional

you’re in the mood for. We suggest the soft flour taco. And, with all their menu items, you have your choice or meat or you can make it vegetarian with some extra rice and beans. Taco del Sol is located at 225 Main St. in Hamilton. Best Bakery: River Rising Don’t mind the people staring intently into River Rising’s display case. Decisions, decisions! Should they go for the cutely decorated sugar cookies? Or how about the small-plate-sized molasses cookies? Maybe a slice of cheesecake will do the trick. But fret not, bakery lover. No matter what choice you opt for, it will be sure to please. After all, River Rising is the Bitterroot’s perennial favorite bakery in the valley. While River Rising does make a mean cookie, that’s not the only thing the bakery specializes in. Quiches, soups and sandwiches are made fresh daily with only the highest quality ingredients. And for the healthy eaters out there, River Rising’s salads are fresh, flavorful and healthy. But if there is one place where you can cheat on your diet, let it be River Rising. You won’t regret it. River Rising Bakery is located at 337 Main St. in Hamilton. Best Restaurant Service: Sundance Cheesecake Cafe For a family-owned local restaurant, customer service is everything, according to Helen Montgomery. “It’s extremely important, said Montgomery,

who runs Hamilton’s Sundance Cheesecake CafĂŠ. “You’re not going to stay in business if you’re not making people happy.â€? And it’s not just the cheesecake and cheese quesadillas that keep Montgomery’s customers happy and coming back for more. Her customers are obviously very happy with the service her restaurant provides, voting it the best restaurant service in the valley. The Sundance Cheesecake CafĂŠ is located at 900 S. First St. in Hamilton.

keeps bringing home the awards. From the steady staples like the Sawtooth or Nut Brown ales to the seasonal whims like Huckleberry Honey Ale and Raggedy Andy Brown I.P.A., beer lovers from all corners of the valley can find the perfect brew to satisfy any cravings. Microbrew lovers are a picky bunch, but time after time, Bitter Root Brewing’s wide-ranging beer menu is sure to include something for everyone. Bitter Root Brewing is located at 101 Marcus St. in Hamilton. Best Wine Selection: The Edge Restaurant When you think of the widest spectrum of wines to choose from, a sports bar probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind. But the Edge Restaurant & Sports Bar is one that likes to buck that trend. With the Edge’s massive wine selection at Hamilton Wine & Liquor, which is under the same roof, there are literally hundreds, maybe thousands of bottles just a few steps from your table. So whether you’re chowing down on your favorite burger or a big bowl of pasta, the friendly staff at the Edge can find that perfect wine to whet your palette. The Edge is located at 140 Bitterroot Plaza Drive in Hamilton.

Best Microbrew Selection: Bitter Root Brewing Beer lovers in the valley are lucky to have such a wide range of local brews to choose from. But Bitter Root Brewing rules supreme in drinkers’ minds, taking the cake once again as the Bitterroot’s best microbrew selection. It’s easy to see why Hamilton’s staple brewery

The friendly staff at the Hamilton taco joint can whip up tacos filled to the brim with your favorite ingredients, or burritos bursting at the seams with beans, meat and a whole host of fresh and tasty treats. But what’s best about dinner at Taco del Sol is you can walk in with a $10 bill and know that you’ll get a delightful burrito or taco or two and still have cash left over for a drink or a side. With cheap “other stuff’, like nachos, rice and beans or chips and salsa, you can breath easy knowing you can get a hefty meal and not break the bank. Taco del Sol is located at 225 Main St. in Hamilton Best Vegetarian: Sundance Cheesecake Cafe It’s easy for the crew at the Sundance Cheesecake Café to make vegetarian dishes out of their entire Mexican menu, said owner Helen Montgomery. But that’s not the only thing that makes the Sundance Cheesecake Café the most vegetarian-friendly restaurant in the Bitterroot. Sundance’s menu also includes unique sal-

ads as well as sandwich pockets bursting with crunchy, fresh vegetables that are sure to make any non-meat eater’s mouth water. “I have some really good friends who are vegetarians, so I’ve adopted a lot of stuff to accommodate more people,” Montgomery said. Three is the lucky number for the 2nd Street Sushi and Asian Grill. For the third year in a row, the Hamilton favorite has snagged the title for best oriental food in the valley. The charming little restaurant’s menu is pretty extraordinary for what one might expect in the Bitterroot. It’s hard not to skip over appetizers like the crispy stuffed mushrooms or the Japanese baked oysters. But then again, you may want to save room for some of their wide ranging sushi. From the traditional California roll to the specialty rolls like the tiger or the Alaskan, there’s no way you’ll

Best Business Lunch: Spice of Life The Spice of Life provides great lunch and dinner but dining room manager Ellen Holland was a little surprised when the restaurant won for best business lunch. “I wouldn’t say it’s the quietest place to come, Holland said. “But it’s a large open room and people aren’t crowded so it’s comfortable. Holland said people have told her that they look forward to bringing out-of-town clients to the Spice of Life and tables can easily accommodate four to five co-workers. “They come in for the specials a lot, Holland said. “Today, it’s chili-lime-tortilla chicken soup and it’s almost gone. Fueled with a lunch like that, businessmen can get a lot of afternoon work done.

Spice of Life is at 163 S. Second St. in Hamilton. Best Mexican Food: Fiesta En Jalisco Fiesta En Jalisco returns this year as winner for best Mexican food in the valley. Fiesta En Jalisco’s secret may be found in story of the tortoise and the hare: slow and steady wins the race. “We haven’t done anything different, said manager Jose Pepe. “We just try to use quality ingredients but still keep our prices affordable. Four immigrants from near Guadalajara, Mexico, started the chain of restaurants in 1994 in Idaho and they have continued to prosper with authentic Mexican cooking. With flavor-filled fajitas, tasty tacos and exquisite enchiladas, the restaurant makes Ravalli

County feel farther south than just the Missoula County line. Pepe said the fajitas are the most popular item but everything sells well. Throw in a margarita and some chips and salsa and you get a tasty meal at a reasonable price. Fiesta En Jalisco is a Northwest business with restaurants locally in Hamilton at 1659 N. First St. and in Stevensville at 201 Main St. Best Pizza: Kodiak Jax Everybody loves pizza even if they don’t agree about what they want on their pizza. But Kodiak Jax offers so many topping options that satisfaction is almost guaranteed. It’s not just the traditional cheese and pepperoni; Kodiak Jax has branched out with such offerings as steak, thai chicken and german pork pizza. But they still make sure each pizza is made with care and the finest ingredients. “We make pizzas the way we would want it, said pizza chef Robin Wolfe. “We go to Super One everyday and make sure we have the freshest meat and vegetables. With 21 specialty pizzas, the prep cooks are kept busy making sure there are enough toppings to heap on the pies. “Cheryl Austin and I cut veggies everyday. Wolfe said. Even with so many pizzas, Wolfe said owner Cody Omlid is open to suggestions. “He attends to the customers and really caters to what they want, Wolfe said. In addition to pizza, Kodiak Jax offers sandwiches, pasta, Mexican food and salads. Kodiak Jax is at 109 S. First St. in Hamilton and 514 Main St. in Stevensville.

Best Soup: Zaxan Coffee Roasters This seems to be the year for restaurants known for one thing to win for something totally different. Such is the case for the category for best soup. “It’s kind of funny,â€? said owner Stacy Lewis. “We’re a coffee place and I’d have thought we’d win for best coffee. But I’ll take it.â€? Lewis said she offers two different soups everyday: a creamy soup and a brothy one, such as clam chowder and gumbo. Almost all are housemade from a rue or stock. Zaxan offers a number of other lunch favorites including a fresh salad bar, sandwiches and pananis. But on a cold winter day in the Bitterroot, few things will satisfy like a hot bowl of homemade soup. Zaxan Coffee Roasters CafĂŠ is at 140 Cherry St. in Hamilton.

The Beanery has existed in the valley for 24 years but Truc and his wife Larissa have been at the helm for six. Recently, they added a location at the Woodside Cutoff so maybe a few more customers tipped the balance in his favor. Truc said his business is well-positioned in the food business hierarchy to survive the economic downturn. “We’ve lost some customers who cut out trips for coffee, Truc said. “But we seem to have gained some who don’t go out to dinner so much anymore but they still want to have a good cup of coffee. The Bitterroot Beanery has locations at 600 S. we’ve finally got it right,” Chapman said. “I like smoked meat, and a few years ago, no one else was doing it so we saw a niche. And people are buying it… woo-hoo!” During breakfast or lunch, the friendly waitstaff no doubt helps The Kitchen stay high on customers’ list of places to eat. “We have great waitresses who have stayed with us,” Chapman said. “Beth has been here eight years and is such a sweetheart. We like to have a good time while we’re serving our customers.” The Kitchen is at 102 S. Second St. in Hamilton Best Sandwich: Filling Station Grille Options are everything and when it comes to sandwiches, the Filling Station Grille has you covered. “Our sandwiches are good,” said owner Raina Young with pride. The two most popular sandwiches on the Filling Station’s menu are the Servicar, which is turkey avocado, provolone cheese and green chilies, and the Bucks Club, which is a triple decker monster with ham, turkey, bacon, cheddar, mayo, lettuce and tomatoes on rye.

And customers also like classics, like their Reuben. “We just sell tons of those,” Young said. What Young says sets her restaurant apart is the freshness of each sandwich. “We make everything from scratch,” she said. “We just use the best ingredients and each sandwich is made to order. There’s no mass production.” The Filling Station Grille is located at 217 W. Main St. in Hamilton. Best Burger: Nap’s Grill

Gilder said he regularly has customers telling him that they have just eaten the best burger of their lives. “I’m going to start writing a Top-10 Things Overheard in Nap’s,” he said. “People come up to me all the time and tell me how good the burgers are.” While the focus is food, Gilder has also tried to gussie up the place. “I’ve done a lot of change like getting new booths and tables,” Gilder said. “People deserve something nice,” Nap’s Grill is at 220 N. Second St. in Hamilton.

While it may seem unusual that Nap’s Grill won best salad – grills aren’t usually known for green leafy offerings – winning for best burger makes total sense. It is, after all, their focus. Owner Tyler Gilder said Nap’s specialty wins awards year after year for many reasons. “Where do I start?” Gilder said. “We get our meat fresh every day, we hand-paddle our burgers out. None of the burgers are frozen, and it’s just a good product. We use only Angus beef. We’ve got it all dialed in. Nothing sits around for long.” The Nap’s 3/4-pound burger with fries and a drink is the most popular item.

Best Martini: The Edge Shaken or stirred? That is the eternal question when it comes to James Bond’s drink of choice. But for fans of the classic cocktail, the Edge Restaurant & Sports Bar can make it any way you like. Bitterrooters are very fond of the Edge’s drink selection this year, picking the staple Hamilton restaurant as the best Bloody Mary as well as the best wine selection. So it’s no surprise their martinis were chosen as the best in the valley. The Edge’s martinis aren’t just for international men of mystery. Enjoy the classic concoctions out on their Bitterroot’s Best patio or while catching your favorite team on one of their many televisions. Shaken or stirred, either way you’ll walk away happy with your martini from the Edge. The Edge is located at 140 Bitterroot Plaza Drive in Hamilton. Best Margarita: Fiesta En Jalisco Fiesta En Jalisco and the Victorian Casino next door have had a running rivalry for the Bitterroot’s best margarita. This year, Fiesta En Jalisco won out. steady wins the race. “We haven’t done anything different,” said manager Jose Pepe. “We just try to use quality ingredients but still keep our prices affordable.” In its sixth year in Hamilton, the restaurant offers nine kinds of specialty margaritas, including Cadillac, a margarita with a Grand Marnier float, or a Midori, which includes a Midori float. That’s in addition to regular margaritas to which customers can add up to 12 fruit flavors. Fiesta En Jalisco is a Northwest business with restaurants locally in Hamilton at 1659 N. First St. and in Stevensville at 201 Main St. Best Friday Night Spot: The Office When a bar is voted the best place to meet men and women, it’s a shoe-in for the best Friday night spot. Friday night: the end of the work week when people can stay out a little later and blow off a little steam. And if you’re single, and you know other bachelors are converging on The Office, it’s a good time to shake your bootie, to see and be seen. To that end, The Office offers music and a dance floor. “I know we offer the best entertainment on Friday nights,” said manager Gabriel Diaz. “Some nights it’s a deejay and others it’s live music, so there’s something for everyone.” And when the dancers get a little too steamy, they can always saunter out on the outdoor patio to watch the summer sun set

over the Bitterroot Mountains. The Office is at 109 W. Main St. in Hamilton.

Best Bartender: Bethany Anderson, The Office Whether you prefer a Singapore Sling, Sex on the Beach or St. Pauli Girl, Bethany Anderson is the best bartender to serve it up. Anderson may be part of the reason that The Office landed so many Bitterroot Best awards this year, including Best Happy Hour and Best Friday Night Spot. Manager Gabriel Diaz wasn’t surprised that Anderson won. “Her service is good,” Diaz said. “She’s good with the customers; she’s just good all around.”

The Office is at 109 W. Main St. in Hamilton. Best Cowboy Bar: Cowboy Troy’s Driving down U.S. Highway 93 in Victor this summer may not evoke visions of classic Westerns, what with construction tearing up the highway. But take one step into Cowboy Troy’s and your thoughts of heavy machinery will quickly turn to horses, cowboys and some darn good food. While the Bitterroot is one of the most cowboy friendly counties in the entire state, Cowboy Troy’s goes the extra mile to make sure their bowlegged patrons feel right at home. It could be the delicious menu of hearty burgers, pizzas, wings and appetizers. It could be the thirst-quenching drinks. Or it could be the live cowboy music and dancing on Friday nights and karaoke on Thursdays and Saturdays. Whatever it is, Cowboy Troy’s has found that magical combination that keeps its customers happy and voting it the best cowboy bar in the valley yet again. Yeehaw! Cowboy Troy’s is located at 2359 U.S. Highway 93 in Victor.

Best Happy Hour: The Office While having a drink after work can make people happy, the true source of happiness during happy hour is saving some money. There’s no better place to do that than The Office, said manager Gabriel Diaz. It seems that Ravalli County agrees with him, but why? “We have the best deal,” Diaz said. “We offer buy-one, get-one while others just offer a dollar off.” But it’s not just cheap drinks. The Office, an expansion of The Silver Coin that created a separate bar in 2008, offers a comfortable environment and outstanding customer service, Diaz said. And in the summer, customers can enjoy their drinks on the outdoor patio. The Office happy hour is Monday through Friday from 5 to 7 at 109 W. Main St. in Hamilton. Best Casino: The Silver Coin The Silver Coin has once again been voted the Bitterroot’s Best Casino, which comes as no surprise to manager Gabriel Diaz. “We’re probably smaller than some other

casinos, but just as with other aspects of the place, it comes down to customer service,” Diaz said. Diaz said he stresses customer service to the staff, so it’s doubtful that a gambler will sit for long with an empty glass. And that makes a difference. The Silver Coin also has some longevity going for it, offering Ravalli County residents the most current games in a comfortable setting for close to 15 years. The Silver Coin is at 109 W. Main St. in Hamilton.

Best Candy Shop: Big Sky Candy

Shops/Businesses

It’s shops like Big Sky Candy that really give Hamilton’s downtown the delightful old fashioned feeling you get while strolling down Main Street. One step in the front doors and you’re taken to a simpler time when all that mattered was candy. And candy they have. The perennial Bitterroot’s Best winner has handmade chocolates, brittles, toffee, caramel, crèmes, truffles and more that they make from scratch. Can someone say yummy? If you’re in need of bulk candies, you better get comfortable in the store because you may be there a while. Mints, chocolate covered coffee beans, gummis of every flavor and shape, candycoated nuts. It’s enough to make your teeth hurt just thinking about. Speaking of teeth, however, they do have a large selection of sugar-free treats. They wouldn’t want you to fail your next dentist checkup after all. Big Sky Candy is located at 319 West Main St. in Hamilton. Best Bed & Breakfast: Tin Cup Lodge When you’re staying at a bed and breakfast, it’s assumed that you want to put your feet up and relax a bit. Well the Tin Cup Lodge in Darby is the perfect spot to do that. Tin Cup features two

cabins situated on the edge of the property in a peaceful and restful setting. Then there’s the lodge, which has three rooms. And the main lodge is also available for rental. Most rooms include hot tub access as well as satellite TV and wireless internet access. And for the cabin renters, they can expect a continental breakfast basket bulging with goodies, a great way to kick start a relaxing day in the Bitterroot. No matter what time of year you choose to have a stay at the Tin Cup Lodge, there are a whole host of outdoor activities near by, like downhill and cross country skiing, fly fishing and hiking, that will make a dip in their hot tubs that much sweeter. Tin Cup Lodge is located at 582 Tin Cup Rd. in Darby. Best Hardware/Home Improvement: Evan’s Ace Hardware Ace Hardware is committed to being “the helpful place” for hardware, plumbing, tools, grills, garden and more by offering our customers knowledgeable advice, helpful service and quality products. Services at the Hamilton store include hardware, electrical, plumbing, cleaning supplies, hand and power tools, pain and sundries, lawn and garden BBQs, gift cards, key cutting, glass and acrylic sheet cutting, special orders, paint color matching and screen repair.

Maybe you love swimming and want an Olympic-sized pool. Or maybe you’re super social and love the atmosphere of group classes. Or how about a clean and friendly atmosphere? But one thing the Canyons Athletic Club can offer that should be a deciding factor is its breathtaking views of the Bitterroot Mountains. The Canyons, which sits just east of Hamilton atop Tammany Lane, is across the road from picturesque farmland with the towering Bitterroots looming in the background. So as you’re running on a treadmill or pumping iron, you can watch sunrises, sunsets and all the beauty in between. But it’s not just the views that make the Canyons a Bitterroot’s Best perennial favorite. The club has a friendly and helpful staff, a large selection of classes such as spinning, yoga and kettleball, tennis, racquetball and basketball courts, and more equipment than you could ever want. The Canyons Athletic Club is located at 472 Tammany Lane in Hamilton.

Best Window Display: Robbins on Main Earlier this year, Bunny Robbins and Tony Dees, owners of Robbins on Main, were named the Hamilton Business People of the Year in big part for what they do to spruce up the holiday spirits in downtown Hamilton. And their window displays are a big part of that. Mike Jinings, who knows both Robbins and Dees, helped come up with the award for the two as a way to recognize them for‌ “They’re always doing something to make downtown fun,â€? Jinings said at the time. “Their enthusiasm is contagious.â€? And that enthusiasm can be seen in their playful window displays that showcase all the wonderful trinkets, knickknacks, kitchen accessories and home dĂŠcor that Robbins on Main features in its expansive store. Robbins on Main is located at 209 West Main St. in Hamilton. Best Unique Gifts: Robbins on Main

Best Feed & Farm/Pet Supply: Quality Supply There’s no denying that animals play an integral role in the lives of many people up and down the Bitterroot Valley. The Hamilton store has a full range of nutritional pet foods for all of your favorite critters. They also stock dog houses, bedding and kennels. And for continued health, they provide vaccines and training products. But Quality Supply also knows that our pets need to have a little fun in their lives as well. Best Bookstore: Chapter One Book Store

Best Men’s/Women’s Clothing: Ford’s Department Store

You’d think Chapter One Book Store is the only game in town, having won Best in the Bitterroot year in and year out. The reason is the store’s focus on the community. Chapter One employees recognize customers and greet everyone whether they are buying or just browsing. The store offers local guides and books by Montana authors as well as general interest books, magazines and a coffee shop. The store has expanded its reach beyond the borders of the Bitterroot by maintaining an interactive website allowing customers to buy online, see gift registries and a calendar of events. Chapter One is a regular stop on the First Friday art walk and often hosts book signings and lectures. Customers interested in presigned copies have plenty to choose from. Chapter One is at 252 W. Main St. in Hamilton.

It’s nice when you can find that one-stop shop to find everything you need for all the members of your family. And for Bitterrooters in need of some fashionable new clothing, Fords is their place. Men can walk away happy with comfortable clothes that are stylish. And women have a lot of fashionable duds to choose from with Fords wide selection. Our little men and women in the community can also find the right fit as Fords has an excellent range of kids’ clothes as well. The helpful staff can help you find the perfect size and pick out just the right styles to complement your best qualities. Fords offers name-brand clothing at a reasonable price. No need to drive into Missoula for your next clothing choice. Fords is where it’s at. Fords Department Store is located at 136 West Main St. in Hamilton. Best Place to Pamper Yourself: Bellezza Salon & Spa It’s no secret that Bitterrooters work hard. But sometimes, you need to take a break from the stresses of everyday life and spend some quality time really relaxing. That’s where Bellezza Salon & Spa comes in. The Hamilton establishment is a full-service salon and spa whose services include hair cuts, massage, waxing, tanning, skin care, ear and body piercing, permanent makeup and packages that include a little bit of everything. “We consider each client as an individual with his or her own needs and desires,” they write on their website. “We strive to fulfill those needs and desires with the best talent available.” The friendly and knowledgeable staff can also help select the best products for your lifestyle from Bellezza’s large selection of beauty products. Bellezza Salon and Spa is located at 1659 North First St. in Hamilton. Best Jewelry Store: Mikesell’s Fine Jewelry Jewelry has long been a form of personal expression and affection when it’s a gift for others. To make just the right statement, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Mikesell’s Jewelry. The locally owned and operated store has served the Bitterroot community for years and is one of the regular winners in Bitterroot’s Best. In addition to offering a wide variety of earrings, necklaces, rings and watches, they offer custom design and ring setting, as well as repair and restoration of most pieces of jewelry. The experienced staff will treat your family heirlooms with the care they deserve. Walk in and browse or ask the staff to help you find the perfect piece to wear to that special event or to give to that special person. Mikesell’s Fine Jewelry is at 201 W. Main St. in Hamilton.

Best Interior Design: Madison Creek Furnishings Everyone wants their home to reflect their style and tastes, an outward reflection of their inner essence where they can welcome friends and family. With the help of Madison Creek, every home can be welcoming and beautiful. Since opening in 2007, Madison Creek has rapidly become a trusted source for interior design ideas and accessories, repeating this year as one of Bitterroot’s Best. Taking its name from the shop’s official watchdog/mascot, Maddee the golden retriever, the company strives to help Bitterroot residents express themselves through their home furnishings. For a wide range of advice to fit every home and taste, look no further than Madison Creek. Madison Creek is at 3961 U.S. Route 93 in Stevensville. Best Fishing Headquarters: Fishhaus Being chosen as best fishing headquarters in the Bitterroot Valley, home of some of the best fishing in Western Montana, is a high honor because competition is fierce. But the Fishhaus has held the title many times. Fishhaus has been a Hamilton landmark since 1981 and Bill Bean bought it in 1994. “I like the business because of the customers,” Bean said. “I like to help people who have never caught anything before. I want to get them on the river to catch their first fish.” It is a full-service fly shop, offering flies, tackle, licenses, classes and trips with local guides. It is an exclusive distributor of Cortland Pro, Scientific Angler and Scott Rods, among others. “I enjoy working with people and doing the fly-tying classes,” Bean said. “I am a people person.” Although fishing is a passion for Bean, running a fly shop is still isn’t all fun. “You are running a business and you are trying to make money,” he said. “It’s hard work, but I guess we make it look like fun.” Fishhaus is at 702 N. First St. in Hamilton. Best Bank/Financial Institution: Ravalli County Bank Ravalli County Bank was founded in 1895 by Marcus Daly and has kept its focus local ever since. With the exception of a few years, bank ownership has been local as well. The Shonkwiler family bought the bank in 1966 and Chuck Shonkwiler has been president since 1983. “I think we have simply tried to provide consistently good quality service,” Shonkwiler said. Shonkwiler said the past couple years have been challenging for banks but that the recession appears to be ending and there is hope for the future. “This bank has served the valley for more than a century,” Shonwiler said. “We try to be good corporate citizens and we care about our community.”

Bank branches are at 224 Pinckney St. and 1131 N. First St. in Hamilton, 39 Stevensville Cutoff Road in Stevensville and 1070 Eastside Highway in Corvallis. Best Children’s Clothing: Me & Mom Me & Mom is repeating this year as Bitterroot’s Best store for children’s clothing after having offered unique clothes and stimulating children’s games in Hamilton for seven years. Owner Patti Martin keeps things fresh by rotating clothing offerings every six months and toys as often as she can. Clothes sizes range from infant to size 4 “We have our bestsellers that you can find anytime but we also change a lot out so the offering stays fresh,” Martin said. The “games” Martin stocks have the added benefit of being educational. Many are displayed in the store so parents and children can

play with them to see if they appeal. “It’s not just a piece of plastic,” Martin said. “Even though it looks like a toy, you are going to learn something and use your imagination.” Me & Mom is at 305 W. Main St. in Hamilton. Best Tack Store: Quality Supply One drive around Ravalli County and you’ll notice a theme. Horses. They are everywhere. People in this valley absolutely love their equine pals. And it’s yet again Quality Supply that our Bitterroot’s Best voters turn to for all of their tack needs. Located south of Hamilton, Quality Supply has just that – a quality supply to suit all of your tack needs. Rows upon rows of riding equipment and clothing are on display and, even better, they are reasonably priced. Not sure where to find what you’re looking for or what’s the best bit or halter on the market? Just ask one of Quality Supply’s knowledgeable employees. They can help you find exactly what you’re looking for to make your horse riding a great experience for both you and your animal. Quality Supply is located at 1189 1st St. South in Hamilton. Best Autobody Shop: Wimps Body Works Montana can be a harsh place to have a car. What with the brutal winters and scorching summers and every other weather condition in between, our vehicles can really take a beating. That’s where Wimps Body Works comes in handy. The shop has been in business for over 60 years. And their friendly staff of current painters and body men have over 40 years experience in the business. Wimps does auto body repairs and painting as well as towing. And one thing the staff at Wimps offers that puts them above the rest are free service loaner cars. And what’s the number one vehicle problem that brings customers into the Hamilton shop? Accidents with deer. Go figure. Wimps Body Works is located at 998 N. 1st St. in Hamilton. Best Sporting Goods/Outdoor Store: Bob Ward’s Holy cow, are there a lot of outdoor activities available in this valley or what? Fishing, camping, hiking, hunting, kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking. The list could go on and on. But luckily for Bitterroot residents, Bob Wards in Hamilton is a one-stop shopping Mecca for all things outdoors. The staff at Bob Wards can help cloth you from head to toe in the latest and greatest apparel and footwear. They can get you geared

up for a backpacking trip with the most reliable brands. The possibilities are endless. Bob Wards is located at 1120 N. 1st St. in Hamilton. Best Antique Store: Windsor Antique Boutique There’s not a lot of businesses that go to the lengths to provide quality merchandise quite like Windsor Antique Boutique does. Owners Dan and Julie Porch travel across the country to bring back beautiful quality antiques to their Stevensville shop. And not only that, but the store regularly receives shipments from places like England and China. “We have a lot of unique antique pieces and we also carry a lot of new items, a lot of home décor,” said Jackie Bahls, whose parents own the shop. And what are the most popular items in the store? Armoires. “They go so fast,” Bahls said. “That’s something that goes right out the door.” Windsor Antique Boutique is located at 217 Main St. in Stevensville. Best Florist: Flower Happy Floral Design Sometimes, a name says it all. And that’s exactly what Flower Happy Floral Design owner Pam Suarez is going for. “The name is just so appropriate because it’s a super happy store,” she said. “When you walk in here, you can feel that right away.” The Hamilton shop, a perennial favorite among Bitterroot’s Best voters, doesn’t just offer flowers and gifts. Suarez is proud of her delivery service, which includes balloon and candy bouquets and gourmet gift baskets on top of her flowers. Suarez is also excited about her custom work and centerpieces for things like weddings, private parties and other events. And then there’s always the store’s unique selection of flowers.

Ravalli Republic, Friday, June 17, 2011 - 31

“We have such cool novelty flowers that come in every week, flowers that people have never seen before,” Suarez said. But bottom line is Suarez is passionate about the business she started 11 years ago. “I take a lot of pride in the work I do,” she said. Flower Happy Floral Design is located at 302 N. 1st St. in Hamilton. Best 2nd Hand/Pawn Store/Consignment: Bitterroot Trading Post When it comes to pawn shops, the cleaner the better. And that’s exactly what customers of the Bitterroot Trading Post have come to expect and love about the Hamilton shop. The store is a popular stop for guns, ammunition and components. But if you’re in the market for a retro guitar or some vintage jewelry, the Bitterroot Trading Post has you covered there, as well. And if you need some assistance in finding the perfect item, the friendly and knowledgeable staff is always happy to help you out. The Bitterroot Trading Post is located at 1010 N. 1st Hwy 93 in Hamilton. Best Nursery or Garden Center: K&S Nursery K&S Nursery started as a backyard dream a quarter-century ago. As the vegetable plants grew, so did the Ken and Sandy Price’s greenhouse and eventually the Price clan had to move the operation to its own location. The greenhouse now dwarfs many mansions. With the change of location, the focus changed from vegetables to flowers, shrubs and trees. In addition to the usual bed flowers, the nursery sells an array of plants that are evolved to survive the Montana climate and wildlife. Many are deer-resistant, drought-tolerant and can withstand northern climate swings. But for those special occasions, the staff is happy to special-order plants that can add a unique touch to any garden party or outdoor celebration. K&S Nursery is open seven days a week at 204 Black Lane between Hamilton and Corvallis. Best Video Rental: Crazy Mike’s In this time of Netflix, Redbox and YouTube, video rental stores are challenged to stay alive. Combine that with all the outdoor distractions in the Bitterroot and any video store left standing must be doing something right. Crazy Mike’s has been doing it right and landing in the Bitterroot’s Best for a number of years. The store has the largest selection of movies in the valley, not only current releases but also films from years past. From Ava Gardner to “Avatar,” Crazy Mike’s probably has the movie you’re looking for. And for those who don’t know exactly what they want, Crazy Mike’s staff has the knowledge to make appropriate suggestions. Crazy Mike’s Video is at 210 N. First St. in Hamilton.

Best Caterer: Red Rooster Opposites attract and the best of each can make for a successful combination. That was the case with Ali Bowcutt and Becky Mildenberger. Mildenberger is the artist when it comes to creating fine food combinations and display, having developed the passion as a young girl. But often artists struggle with the business side of things so when Mildenberger met Bowcutt, who has a brain for planning, she knew it was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. After participating in other businesses and the business of raising children, the two started a successful business in 2007 and have been catering events, both large and small, ever since. This summer, they’re being joined by Mildenberger’s 21-year-old daughter, Ashley, as the business continues to grow. “It’s new for me but it’s great food and great people,” Ashley said.

Best Green Business: Sunelco The sun always seems especially bright in the Bitterroot. It’s amplified as it reflects off snow-covered peaks and mountain lakes. But in recent years, some of that luminance is also the reflection from solar panels at Sunelco. Sunelco, a renewable energy company with an emphasis on solar, has been in the Bitterroot for more than a half-century. They publish plans and guides for solar-driven energy systems and help valley residents install systems that can drive everything from water pumps to electronic gates. In this time of rising energy costs, adding a solar system may be a way to bring some of those costs down. For those looking for relief, Sunelco is the bright way to go. Sunelco is at 2086 U.S. Route 93 in Victor. Best Music Store: Music Box Open up this music box and you’ll see why valley residents voted it one of the Bitterroot’s Best. The store has been around since 1984 but this is the first time valley voters have taken note, said owner Jim Hayes. “We offer the widest selection of sheet music, recordings and tubas in town,” Hayes said. In addition to tubas, Hayes offers band instruments and a number of brands of guitars. He can also repair a number of those instruments, offering valley musicians one-stop shopping and peace-of-mind. Being a musician himself, Hayes knows how important an instrument can be. “I’ve played guitar for 40-some years,” Hayes said. “I started working here in 1995 and took over in 2000.” As with all businesses, the economy hasn’t helped the Music Box but as long as there’s a love of music in the valley, Hayes said he’ll be around. “I want to thank all my loyal customers,” Hayes said. “This is great.” The Music Box is at 612 N. First St. in Hamilton. Best Dog Grooming/Care: Bitterroot Kennels

Thank you to all our readers and Valley businesses for participating in the 2011 Bitterroot’s Best contest! We’ll see you again, in 2012.

John and Claudia Williams, owners of Bitterroot Kennels, have a motto for their business. Your pet is a person. So under that motto, the staff at Bitterroot Kennels treats their clients’ animals with love, compassion and respect. “We treat our guests as if they’re people,” Claudia said. “Their comfort, security and safety is our number one issue.” Ashley Bates is the groomer for Bitterroot Kennels and Claudia says Bates gets along great with the dogs that come into the store. “She has a wonderful rapport with the animals,” Claudia said. “She knows her animals.” On top of grooming services, Bitterroot Kennels includes a pet shop with a wide selection of dog toys and boarding. The small staff is rounded out by Tiffany Olsen, who has been with the business for several years. Bitterroot Kennels is located at 119 Big Corral Rd. in Hamilton.
