PRESIDENT'S REMARKS

PARTY & POLITIC FEAT. DJ ENVY

A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT COREY P. PARIS Hello friends, Many of us in this movement have often been told to wait our turn, pay our dues and learn the game before entering politics or gaining support from the political machine in our state. We want to fully focus on ensuring that young people are never turned away from the political process. Faced with doubt around aligning ourselves with the status quo of playing the game, we often forego our own passions to participate in the process that promulgates antiquated convictions and ideologies. It is important that we identify, connect, train and promote young people who have a burning desire to run for office, to become organizers and to change the course of history in this state. We want for their seat at the table to come long before many have been told it might be possible to attain. Earlier this year, we announced that we are cooperating with DNA Campaigns, a political consulting firm and staple of Connecticut politics, committed to providing training and advocacy. With this partnership and your help tonight, we will create the Build the Bench initiative, focused on bringing together young people, regardless of their background and access, from across the state, to be trained on running for office and running campaigns, so that they may be able to change the course of their own destinies. Build the Bench is aimed at grooming homegrown candidates, right from CTYD. This work is hard, it is emotionally draining, but it is well worth it because we aim to change the narrative on young people in the state and on the quality of life for all those who hope to build the movement for a greater purpose. We cannot do this without your help. We need your financial support. We need you to share our vision with your networks and more. We need you to contribute to this once in a generation opportunity. Help us build capacity for all those who need our support. In Solidarity,

Corey P. Paris President, Connecticut Young Democrats

BEN JEALOUS Ben Jealous has spent his professional life at the nexus of social change, media and emerging technologies. He is a former Democratic Nominee for Governor of Maryland, former National President & CEO of the NAACP, former Executive Director of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), and for more than half a decade has been investing in social impact startups. While at the NAACP, Jealous led a series of wholesale changes in how the organization used social media and related technologies to enhance its organizing. He is a visiting scholar at the Annenberg School for Communication. His efforts started with proving the efficacy of online viral voter registration drives in the 2008 Presidential Election. The NAACP’s numbers of online activists really took off when Jealous began using their platforms to organize support for individuals fighting injustices in the criminal justice system. The last such campaign he led for the NAACP signed up more than 600,000 new activists on email and approximately 400,000 via text in less than two weeks. These efforts have also been credited by a major polling firm with shifting public opinion and paving the way for landmark civil rights state legislative victories.

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR SHEILA Y. OLIVER Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver was inspired as a young girl to be a fighter for the voiceless when her eyes were opened to societal injustices and inequities around her, often citing “A Tale of Two Cities” as her youth awakening. She has since pioneered a successful career in public service advocating for social justice, women’s equality, and education, ultimately becoming the first woman of color to serve in a statewide elected office in New Jersey history. In addition to her role as Lieutenant Governor, she serves as Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs, where she has led efforts to strengthen and expand initiatives for fair and affordable housing, community revitalization, homelessness prevention, and local government services that support New Jersey’s 565 municipalities. Under her leadership, the Department has also expanded and leveraged a wide range of initiatives aimed at assisting distressed municipalities, including the federal Opportunity Zones tax incentive, the newly revived Main Street New Jersey program, Urban Enterprise Zones, the Neighborhood Preservation Program, and the Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit program, which received increased funding. In her role as Acting Governor, she has signed multiple bills into law, including those that established a Caregiver Task Force to identify ways to support people taking care of loved ones who are elderly or disabled, require all public school students in grades 6-8 to receive financial literacy education, strengthen equal pay for equal work by preventing employers from asking employees’ previous salary history, and protect employees from wage theft. Across her career, Lieutenant Governor Oliver has worked in the public, non-profit, and private sectors, and has taught numerous college courses. She has served as a member of both the East Orange Board of Education and the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders. In 2003, she was elected to serve the 34th Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly. A trailblazer in every sense of the word, in 2010 she became the first African-American woman in state history to serve as Assembly Speaker, and just the second in the nation’s history to lead a state legislative house.

STATE SENATOR GARY WINFIELD Senator Winfield has been an instrumental leader in helping to reshape conversations surrounding criminal justice, juvenile justice and immigration policy. In 2015, Senator Winfield wrote and championed legislation aimed at reducing police use of force, including requiring the operation of body cameras and cultural competency training for all officers. In years that followed, Senator Winfield helped lead passage of legislation to raise the age at which juvenile arrestees could be tried as adults. In 2018, after a series of high-profile incidents between residents and law enforcement, Senator Winfield led passage of two distinct pieces of legislation to improve community relationships with law enforcement and fortify trust in the state’s justice system during the 2019 legislative session. The first, House Bill 380, prohibits law enforcement officers from firing at a motor vehicle unless there is an imminent threat to the life of the officer or bystander and requires release of body cam footage after a deadly use of force accident; and Senate Bill 880, which increases prosecutorial transparency by requiring the state to collect, report, and publish information about prosecutors’ decisions on a public website each year. In 2019, Senator Winfield’s passion for effective policy led him to draft and champion legislation permitting any state legislator to request the preparation of a racial and ethnic impact statement triggering the mandatory production of such statement, making Connecticut the first state in the nation to pass such a law. In addition to racial impact statements, Senator Winfield also engaged in an eight hour debate to protect and strengthen the Connecticut Trust Act, which passed both the House and Senate respectively. Prior to serving in the Connecticut General Assembly, Senator Winfield voluntarily left both his positions as a field advisor for Alston Power Inc. and as an electrical construction manager for a power plant in Milford to assume the role of a community activist, operating among members of his community for social change.
