* This portfolio contains school work done within the first six semesters of my studies between Autumn of 2014 and Spring of 2017. For the past two years, I have been working full time outside of school, thus returning to my seventh semester in Autumn of 2019.

BUGHAUS

6TH SEMESTER (BACHELOR ASSESSMENT PROJECT) TUTOR: JOEL LETKEMANN // STUDIO: SUSTAINABILITY

Walter Gropius’ TÜrten Estate neighbourhood in Dessau - reimagined as a collectivist commune centered around insect production as a sustainable food source. It is a project that investigates how Dessau as a shrinking city can become the canvas for new typologies of habitation and how the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated issues of our contemporary society can become the creative catalyst for that process.

YOUNG DREAMS, OLD DESIRES 5TH SEMESTER (EXCHANGE TO BEZALEL ACADEMY OF ARTS AND DESIGN, JERUSALEM, ISRAEL) TUTORS: NILLY R. HARAG & URIEL KON // STUDIO: LIMINAL ARCHITECTURE In my 5th Semester, I exchanged to the National Israeli arts school of Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Here, I took the studio course called Liminal Architecture, which sought to deal with architectures on the fringes of society in the hallowed Middle East - including a study trip to the physically fractured city of Nicosia in Cyprus. I did a project dealing with a very challenged site - the Arab village of Jisr az-Zarqa on the Israeli west coast is a very socially troubled town that is chisseled in between two of the richest areas of the country with nowhere to expand. The studio and project was highly theroretical in nature, drawing on thoughts and philosophies by Jung, Bataille and Artaud to try and create a liminal wedge in the city that could free up some of the town’s lost sense of self. A sort of bottom-up, inside-out project for alleviating some of the massive issues that the town dealt with. By connecting three of the town’s core institutions - two schools and a mosque - it was an attempt to connect the core cultural powers of an average life in the city, in between which expressions of individuality, collectivity and personality could form. In addition to the project, I wrote an article about Jisr az-Zarqa for the Arcspace magazine, which is readable here.

¡BUEN CAMINO! 4TH SEMESTER TUTOR: NACHO RUIZ ALLEN // STUDIO: TRANSFORMATION This was a transformation project in which I had to transform an old, ruinous leather tanning factory on the outskirts of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The intention of the project was to rethink the building, which was situated directly on the Camino walkway, to offer accomodation and nurture for the weary walker. Programme-wise, it combined a hostel, a café and bathing facilities, and it took some of its design-cues from the Nørre Vosborg hotel in Denmark, which was a related research task to the semester. The research lent to the project not only in form, but also in the material qualities of Nørre Vosborg, which itself is an old barn-house.
