I like to see things that I have not seen before. As architects - and humans - on a limited planet, I often find that the most interesting question we may ask ourselves is ‘what if’; and then regard our replies with equal doses of seasoned experience as well as the childlike aspiration to always challenge the status quo. Thank you for taking this moment to consider my work, I appreciate it.

PROJECT 1 OF 5
Symphony of the Seas World’s biggest cruise ship
City of the Sea New Pedagogies for Other Futures at the Cruise Port of Copenhagen 10th Semester (Thesis Project) Supervisor: Carolina Dayer
Tivoli
This project imagines a speculative architectural future for the cruise ship typology. Departing from Outer Nordhavn in Copenhagen and located in the Baltic Sea, the proposal demands responsibility from first world countries to act on climate change matters creatively. Cruise ships, an often-overlooked typology within the architectural discipline, hold incredible imaginary powers if re-envisioned. These new imaginaries, far from dull sustainable problem-solving approaches to architecture, help us to have hope. The project is nominated for the RIBA Silver Medal and was selected by the Danish Association of Architects as one of six projects for their 2021 thesis exhibition, “Young Talents Inspire for a Sustainable Future”.

DEFINITION OF A CRUISE A Cruise is a voyage of at least 60 hours by a seagoing vessel, mainly for pleasure. No cargo/rolling stock will be transported, but only passengers with tickets that should include accommodation and all meals. The Cruise voyage must include at least two visiting ports apart from the starting and ending port.

Ship design entails planning within strict, closed boundaries. Different natured programs juxtapose and inform one another as the possibility for unexpected connections arise.

ALL BOATS AHOY! It is a big ship, and many waters will be too shallow for it to explore. Not to worry! Learning rooms are adjoined to the lifeboats, allowing for quick getaways. At sea, the attention of the ship is outward towards the big blue and has open decks with outside areas that allow the students to take it all in.
A SHIP TO TAKE PART IN THE LIFE OF THE HARBOUR Cruise ports are often desolate areas without much recreational life. But what if the ships themselves opened up to the city and became part of the maritime urban fabric of contemporary coastal regions? The proposed ship design prefers openness over introversion and see-through over boundary. In time, as the city grows around the new Cruise Port of Copenhagen, perhaps the giants of the seas will reinvigorate some of the maritime marvel and wonder that travelling machines used to convey.

DAILY CRUISE LIFE A ship needs a crew, and this ship is no different. Aboard the ship, the life of the students - who are now sailors - revolve around commonality; equality and companionship are some of the honorable traits that the big blue seas have imposed on many a sea-farer. Therefore, the cabins differ from usual cruise ship ‘staterooms’ in their puritanism. Retract to your bunk at night, or enjoy a serene shower while overlooking the vastness of the sea.

INFRASTRUCTURAL AID TO THE SEA In the golden age of ocean travel, the liners like Titanic and Queen Mary would carry cargo such as mail and goods between cities. In this architectural narrative, the new prototype of cruise ship also takes on responsibilities. The stern end of the ship has amenities to salvage plastic out of the ocean as well as handling large shipping containers. A large debris collecting bowl is connected to student workshop quarters where some of the debris can be converted into art or installations that they may exhibit onboard the ship. Underneath, the filtered runoff water runs through the Mess Hall and into the Dock Area, which is ready to receive visitors to the ship while at sea.
13 of 45
RETURNING TO LAND As the ship returns to port, it can drop off its excess plastic to be repurposed, or at a incineration facility. Either way, it is now out of the ocean and back at land from where it came. Similarly, the cargo offload can commence as soon as the ship docks. A cutaway in the deck slab along with the onboard crane make the ship flexible to different port situations and suitable for less bulk-based shipments than regular container ships.

PROJECT 2 OF 5 I Need Some Space! House for an Astronaut (and his Son) 9th Semester Supervisor: Carolina Dayer In this project, the assignment given was to form a fictional character for whom to design a house at a site in Øgaderne, Aarhus. Moreover, half the project had to consist of a public feature. Resulting was a place in the city to contemplate among terrestrial and cosmic matters. Look up, rise and fall. Sometimes we need to look at the moon to understand that life can be larger, prettier and more dangerous than the comforts of Øgaderne - a valuable lesson for the future of all. Through studies of masks and literary lightness, the project is a tactile exploration of the relationship between weight and weightlessness. Work muses: Guido Cavalcanti, Dante Alighieri, Italo Calvino and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. 16 of 45

The Tall Attic Dante Alighieri
Architecture for Lightness A nice house in the ground with a tall attic A main objective of the project is to explore different modes of achieving lightness through architecture, based on Italo Calvino’s 1988 lecture on Lightness. The main points taken from the lecture is Calvino’s descriptions of literary lightness

in the Italian poets of Dante Alighieri and Guido Cavalcanti. In essence, the project consists of both a lighthearted philosophical question - should we pay more attention to space? - as well as an exploration into the tectonics and bodily experience of lightness on Earth. The output of this exploration is a house, lodged in the ground, consisting of heavy concrete units, between which the body can move freely and

Construction of Dante’s Room Dante’s Room refers to Dante Alighieri’s method of achieving literary lightness by removing everything superflouous. It consists of a chromatic steel tube wherein one is suspended on a platform of textile. 23 of 45
Look up, take it in...
Dante’s Room The platform is connected to a chain drive by a 2-way winch, which controls an aperture in either end of the tube. As the platform moves up, the upper aperture opens while the lower one closes, and vice versa. As such, ‘all else’ is removed, and the user will sense the lightness of being in space. 24 of 45

3 PROJECT 3 OF 5 Dedicated Uncertainty A modern Grundtvigian high school of well-balanced youth - and old ideas for modern times. 8th Semester, 2020 Supervisor: Lars Holt
As an answer to today’s unhealthy social acceleration among young people, the aim of this project is to create a folk high school that, like Grundtvig’s original, has well-rounded formation as its core ideal. The program and architecture of the school aspires to enhance this pedagogical ambition by encouraging fundamental learning activities such as reading, debating, listening, reflecting and creating.

PROJECT 5 OF 5 In Wet and Dry House for an Extreme Future Competition, 2019 (Finalist; winner announced in Spring of 2022 due to COVID-19) Collaboration w. Emil Blücker, Chalmers University The project is a simple and speculative proposal for “the single family home of the future in Scandinavia” in the context of a Swedish idea competition. (BO2049). The proposal makes space for new houses in the gaps between agricultural fields where the draining ditches can be expanded into larger reservoirs. These are utilized by houses as well as farmers, and with this move the house inscribes itself with resilience into a future where the weather will become more extreme in all aspects. In periods of drought the farmers can drain the stored water, while in periods of severe downpour the fields have run offs into the reservoirs for storage. This natural ‘harvesting’ of rainwater is used for hydroponic food production in the house itself. The house becomes a modern take on a classic typology in the philosophy that “if it worked for the past 200 years, it probably won’t break now”.
