Welcome from the Chairman

Welcome to the Crown Prince’s Cup Festival, sponsored by Cebarco.

It is a great honour to have you with us at the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club as we come together for a weekend of fantastic racing and a celebration of the sport’s continued evolution in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

I extend my gratitude to our partner, Cebarco, for their continued sponsorship of this year’s feature race. Now in the second year of this collaboration, Cebarco’s support reflects our shared vision of excellence and innovation in the sport, and we are proud to continue strengthening this valued partnership.

I would also like to recognise the contributions of our sponsors across the festival, Howden Group, Al Muzdaher Stud, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Grand Seiko and The Bahrain Jewellery Centre, Lexus and EK Kanoo, and Gulf Air whose ongoing support remains integral to the success of our racing season.

The Crown Prince’s Cup is a highlight of Bahrain’s racing calendar, showcasing the remarkable talent of our equine athletes and jockeys, while reinforcing the Kingdom’s growing reputation in the international racing community.

This year, we are delighted to welcome an international field, with runners representing Bahrain, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the United Arab Emirates.

Beyond the excitement on the track, the weekend reflects our broader commitment to advancing the sport in Bahrain and promoting the Kingdom as a global destination for horse racing. I am delighted to welcome our international guests and extend my best wishes to all participants.

HIS HIGHNESS

LIMITLESS CULTURE,

2024 BAHRAIN INTERNATIONAL TROPHY

Spirit Dancer at the double

Sir Alex Ferguson’s horse makes history in Bahrain

The 2024 running of the Bahrain International Trophy saw history made as Spirit Dancer became the first dual winner of the Kingdom’s most valuable race.

The victory made for another special occasion for Spirit Dancer’s owner breeder, Sir Alex Ferguson, who was again on hand to welcome his winner with co-owner Ged Mason. It was also a masterful feat of training by Richard Fahey, who had nurtured the horse back to his best after picking up an injury in March, and a brilliant ride from jockey, Oisin Orr.

The Group 2 race attracted a truly international field and produced a thrilling contest as Spirit Dancer repeated his success in the race, once again coming with a strong run down the outside, this time to overhaul eventual runner-up Lead Artist.

Lead Artist was trained by John & Thady Gosden and it was the fourth time they have produced the runner-up in the Bahrain International Trophy. In third was Calif, owned by Victorious Racing and trained in France by Carlos and Yann Lerner.

As well as attracting runners from six different racing jurisdictions, this year’s Bahrain International Trophy was broadcast around the world to a record number 27 broadcasters in 113 countries.

Tom Marquand Bahrain Turf Club ambassador

Today we welcome Tom Marquand, Bahrain Turf Club ambassador, to the Crown Prince’s Cup Festival.

In recent years the multiple Group 1 winning jockey has strengthened his partnership with the Kingdom of Bahrain through his sponsorship with the Bahrain Turf Club.

Firmly established as one of the world’s leading riders, Marquand has enjoyed big race success all over the world, including here in the Middle East, as well as in Europe, the USA, the Far East and Australia.

The 26-year-old enjoyed another successful year in 2024 in which the highlight was victory in the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes on Economics, owned by His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

“”

Tom is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most respected jockeys, with a reputation and a following that resonates across international racing. To have someone of his stature associated with the Bahrain Turf Club reflects our ambition and commitment to aligning with the very best in the sport.

International Races

The Crown Prince’s Cup is recognised as an International Listed race, meeting strict global standards for quality and performance.

International race status is awarded to races that consistently achieve high levels of competition, with performance measured by the best sustainable performance ratings of the first four horses. For a Listed race, this average must exceed 100 over a sustained period, ensuring the race maintains its standing within the international racing community.

These standards are set by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities and, in the case of Bahrain, are monitored by the Asian Pattern Committee (APC). The APC is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the development of top-quality races across Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East. Bahrain’s participation in this system reflects its commitment to upholding the highest standards of race quality and governance.

Achieving Listed status is a significant accomplishment, placing the race within a clear framework of international recognition. The Crown Prince’s Cup was awarded its Listed status for the 2021/22 season and continues to exemplify the growth and ambition of Bahrain’s racing industry. The Bahrain Turf Club is working to progress the race to Group 3 status in the coming years, further demonstrating its dedication to advancing the country’s international racing profile.

King’s Cup promotion heads list of race upgrades

At the start of the season it was announced that a further three of Bahrain’s premier races had been upgraded by the Asian Pattern Committee.

The promotions are headed by The King’s Cup, which has been elevated to international Group 3 status, while both HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup and HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup have been granted Listed status for the first time.

The upgrades bring the total of international pattern races held in Bahrain to six, alongside The Crown Prince’s Cup (Listed) and Al Methaq Mile (Listed) and following the promotion in 2023 of the Bahrain International Trophy to Group 2. Prior to the launch of the Bahrain International Trophy in 2019, there were no internationally recognised races in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Yusuf Buheji, CEO of the Bahrain Turf Club said:

“Under the leadership of the club’s Chairman, His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, our ambition is to continue the development of horseracing in Bahrain and be a jurisdiction that stands alongside the world’s best.

“The upgrades underline how our investment in developing an attractive international programme, coupled with increased prize money for locally trained horses, has delivered on our objective of raising both the quality and competitiveness of racing in Bahrain.”

RoyalTea Festival at REHC

Promoting Bahraini women and their participation in equestrian sport

Last week, the Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) hosted the second edition of the RoyalTea Festival, held in partnership with the Supreme Council for Women.

The RoyalTea Festival aims to enhance the role of Bahraini women and their participation in various fields, including equestrian sports and horseracing.

The festival also included activities to showcase the unique experience available to women attending the races, organized by the REHC and sponsored by Bahrain Jewellery Centre, Annoushka Jewellery and Empire Limo.

In cooperation with the Supreme Council for Women, the REHC advocates the implementation of the principle of gender balance and equal opportunities.

The Club actively encourages Bahraini girls to pursue careers as jockeys through training programs at the Bahrain Jockey Academy. The success of apprentice jockey Dhay AlSaadon, who completed the Academy’s programme and now competes in races, demonstrates the Club’s dedication to diversifying the field of the sport’s participants.
