Little Biters!

What to do

When Toddlers

M

Bite

any toddlers go through a “biting stage.” They bite their Mummies and Daddies, or they bite other children. The parents of children who are bitten become fierce defenders of their children. Their “I’ve got to protect my child” response can easily come across as “Your child is bad,” and can set off emotional waves that parents of the biter and the bitten are poorly equipped to handle. But this commonplace behavior has nothing to do with how “good” a child is, or how well he is parented.

Infants experiment with biting Toddlers bite as part of exploring their worldEvery infant experiments with biting. Babies bite their teething toys, their mommy’s breast, their pacifier, or the fingers or shoulders of their parents. Usually, the parent’s immediate flinch or cry of surprise communicates to the child that biting hurts, and after a few experiments, the child has learned enough about biting to move on. The experiments cease. There’s

16 - March 2015 l Rascals of London

Little Biters nothing bad or wrong with these biting experiments: the baby is doing what he or she must do to learn. It helps the learning process if the adult responds with a loud “Ouch! Please don’t bite me,” but doesn’t blame, punish, or lecture the baby. The baby needs to experiment in order to learn, so a few painful moments will be necessary before the learning process has taken its course. Parents must guard their own safety with an infant who is exploring biting. For instance, it doesn’t make sense to put your finger in the mouth of a baby who is exploring biting, if he has teeth!

Toddlers bite when they feel afraid or frustrated By the time a child has reached toddler age, he has learned that biting hurts. Seldom is a bite from a toddler an experiment. You might think, “Well, if he knows it hurts, why does he decide to do it?” In my view, toddlers don’t decide to bite. They are generous beings at heart, and they don’t want to hurt anyone. A toddler bites because a big wave of tension has suddenly flooded his brain. He doesn’t plan this, and he doesn’t know how to stop it. Toddlers’ biting is like a sneeze or a cough - his body does it for internal reasons that aren’t under his control. One of the main reasons toddlers bite is because they are feeling afraid or frustrated. When they haven’t had their fill of close, relaxed time with their parents or caregivers, or when stress has risen in their lives, they may not express the fears or frustrations through natural outlets like crying and tantrums. To them, the situation doesn’t feel favorable for expressing lots of feelings. But the feelings rumble nevertheless, and when they become intolerable, biting can occur.

Family Toddlers need an outlet for their feelings

*

Toddlers need chances to express their frustrations, fears, and other upsets on a daily basis. They want to be close to Mommy and Daddy, but mommies and daddies have to work, shop, fix meals, talk on the phone, and take care of other children. Toddlers in childcare want to be treasured by their caregivers, but caregivers have many children to consider. So tension builds, one little disappointment or lonely moment at a time. A day’s ordinary events can easily leave a toddler feeling upset and alone, although nothing an adult would consider “difficult” has happened. For instance, if a parent is gone for a night on business, a toddler doesn’t understand her absence. He feels afraid and tries to cry, hoping to heal his fears and sadness in the arms of someone who loves him and will listen. But the well-meaning caregiver believes that the toddler will feel better if he doesn’t cry, and gives him a bottle or puts him to sleep. The next day in childcare, he bites a child. He tried to release his tensions, but couldn’t. So the feelings he stuffed away jump out in the form of biting. He doesn’t know why, and he didn’t choose to bite. He was simply too full of tension to function well.

Both current tensions and stored tensions can cause a child to bite The tensions that drive toddlers to bite can arise from things that have recently happened. The birth of a sibling, the absence of a parent, witnessing violence on TV, a change in caregivers, or moving from one apartment to another are the kinds of things that can cause a child to bite. The fact that a toddler has feelings that are being expressed in biting isn’t the fault of the parent, or of the toddler. Biting is like a runny nose: it’s common, it’s not fun for the child or the parents, and it can affect other children adversely, but it’s not the sign that anyone is “bad.”

No More Hitting Patty Wipfler talks about children’s feelings of aggression. Sometimes, the most likely explanation for biting is that it’s driven by feelings that come from events at the beginning of a child’s life, rather than by current tensions. For instance, I know several toddlers who would bite or lash out at other children when there was no unusual stress that their parents could identify. Usually, this aggression would arise when children were sitting or playing together in close quarters. When we began to try to figure out what tensions might be operating, we found that each of these children had experienced a difficult birth. Each had been born

Little Biters after a long labor or after being stuck in the birth canal for some time. We guessed - with young children, guessing is the best one can do - that children crowding close might trigger strong, early feelings of being trapped and in danger. Toddlers may also bite out of frustration. To be a toddler is to see a vast number of interesting things people do, and to think, “I want to do that!” The toddler doesn’t know that he doesn’t yet have the power or coordination to fully succeed. It is a hopeful and a frustrating time of life. When a toddler’s tantrums - his natural, healthy, and tension-relieving response to frustration - aren’t allowed, a child’s frustration can build until he can’t stand to be close to other children. He bites or lashes out, because the buildup of frustration inside him has had no permissible outlet.

You don’t need to know the reason a child is biting

Guessing why a child bites can be helpful in predicting when this behavior will arise, so that you can be close at hand to intervene to help the child and protect other children. But to help a child, you don’t need to understand the source of the tensions. Whether you have thought of a likely cause or not, your helpful actions will be the same.

Help a child release tensions in productive ways Biting doesn’t release a child’s inner tension. A child feels much worse after he’s bitten someone, even if he appears to be indifferent. Hurting someone adds to his load of upset, and the guilt he feels makes him look like he doesn’t care. But inside, he’s more frightened than before. When a child has bitten someone, get close. Tell him gently that you’re sorry you didn’t get there in time to keep things safe. Then, move so that you can look into his eyes, and ask him if he can tell you how he feels. You won’t usually get words of explanation, but you will get a child who feels so badly that he can’t look at you, and can’t connect. He will usually begin to writhe and squirm. If you keep gently trying to make eye contact, and tell him you want to be with him right now, a child will often be able to move into releasing feelings through crying or a tantrum. Sometimes a child will begin to laugh, rather than cry or storm, as he tries to wiggle away. That is a good sign. Laughter is often the first step in the tension release process. All the child needs to keep releasing the tension that caused him to bite is your kindness, and your attempt to connect. You don’t need to be the child’s parent to be the one to help. Any nearby, caring, patient adult is a good person to intervene. A child over the top with tension needs a listener, any listener. If the listener isn’t his parent, he is likely to cry about wanting his parent. Those may be the feelings at the root of his biting behavior.

You don’t need to wait until another bite occurs There two strategies that are proactive and begin having a good effect quickly. They are Special Time and Staylistening.

Special Time The first step to helping a child who bites is to strengthen his ability to feel your attention and love. Special Time is an ideal tool for this step. Set a length of time, anywhere from three to twenty minutes, tell him how long it will be, set a timer if you have one, and then get close. Offer warmth, eye contact, and enthusiasm, and play the way the child wants to play. If he’s playing in a manner that excludes you, keep offering gentle touch and eye contact. If he finds a way to laugh with you - without you tickling him - try to keep the laughter going, because laughter releases tension and helps children feel safe and understood. When the time is over, let him know that you enjoyed playing with him, and that there will be another Special Time soon. Special Time, done daily or several times in a week, will encourage a child to show you his feelings as they arise. He may start crying when you leave, or have a tantrum instead of sulking when he doesn’t get an extra cookie. This is progress, although some people might interpret it as “regression.” Special Time has warmed up the relationship. Your child bursts into tears because he feels close enough to you to hope that you’ll fold him in your arms and say, “I’m sorry you feel so upset. I’ll listen.”

Stay listening Children who have begun to bite are signaling that they have big feelings that need to be heard. These feelings are carried to the surface by small pretexts such as not wanting to get into the car seat, not wanting to undress for a bath, or not being able to give up playing in order to go to day care. The child wants and needs someone to lovingly listen while he releases his feelings through crying or tantrums. Staylistening gives the child this chance. When the parent or caregiver notices that feelings are about to erupt, the child will benefit if he moves close, drops other expectations for a time, and listens with warmth. Children know exactly how to unload tension. Parents and caregivers have the opportunity to revamp their responses, so that crying and tantrums can do the wonderful but time-consuming job of dissolving the feelings that are at the root of biting and other difficult behavior. As parents and caregivers, we need to train ourselves to think, “Oh, good, a tantrum. He trusts me, and he’s had quite a day!” or “Ahhh. She’s going to cry for awhile now. It’ll be nice to take some time to connect with her - I’ve been rushing all day long.” Used consistently, Special Time and Staylistening will provide a release valve for the tensions that cause a child to bite. It may take awhile toddlers usually have a full storehouse of tension by the time they begin to bite. But if you listen until a child is done crying, you will him relax, and play more freely. He will show you more of the emotional storms he hopes you’ll help him with, rather than tightening up until he lashes out.

18 - March 2015 l Rascals of London

Little Biters Toddlers may also bite when times are especially sweet and close Sometimes, a parent will be snuggling and playing affectionately with their delighted toddler. when their child bites them out of the blue. It’s a shock, and feels like an insult! After it happens a second time, parents become wary of playing at close range. They can’t understand why their own child bites them during the sweetest of playtimes. The chance to snuggle and laugh and have a parent beam at him delightedly is deeply reassuring for a child. He absorbs as much of the parent’s love and delight as he can. He feels safe. So his instinct to signal for help takes over. A bite in the middle of warm, close play means, “I’m ready to tell you about some big feelings, but I need you to help me release them.” When you have been bitten, it’s smart to react with as little fluster as possible. Hold your child close, and say something like, “Honey, I can’t let you bite me. Tell me what’s on your mind.” Offer eye contact, and stay very close. The feel of your attention and your willingness to listen will help your child progress from biting but having no feelings about it—fears make most people, big and small, numb to their feelings - to feeling upset, panicked, or frustrated. Stay close and supportive. Your attention helps the child focus on the feelings he needs to express and heal. Your attention is a balm that, when he’s finished, he will fold deeply into his heart.

Hold a child safely “on the edge” of biting Once your child has bitten you in the midst of affectionate play, be on the lookout for him to lunge for you again when you play with warmth and closeness. If you can catch a child who is ready to bite just before he has gotten to you, and put your hand on his forehead, you’ll be able to keep yourself safe and he’ll be able to notice the tensions that drive him to bite. Gently hold him, inches away from the bite he feels driven to take, and tell him, “I’m not going to let you bite me, dear,” in a tone that lets him know you’re ready to help him. Offer your support and attention, and don’t let your child change the subject. He will either laugh hard and release tension safely that way, or begin to cry hard because he finally has the safety he needs. Your support helps him feel the fear that’s bothering him.

Don’t shame, blame, or punish a child who bites

A child can’t help that his feelings are packed in so tightly that biting occurs. He has tried to cry, and tried to tantrum, but has not yet gotten the support he needs to release feelings of fear or frustration. You can help, whether you’re a parent, a caregiver, a grandparent, or a friend. Every child will move away from biting, as soon as the release of his pent-up feelings allows him to relax and feel safe. Children who bite are good children in need of a good cry, in the arms of a caring adult.

Summer holidays may seem far off, however much we long for them, but it won’t be long now. That’s where Mill on the Brue Outdoor Centre comes in! Children (7 – 15 years) come on their own during the summer holidays, staying for a week or two, or coming daily if they live nearby. We don’t have large numbers of kids (maximum of 60 residential every week) because we know that some could get a feeling of being swamped by hundreds. We are a family run Centre and after 30 years we really feel we know what kids like! Arrival is on Sunday mornings, they are placed in groups according to age, with a maximum of 12 in each group, introduced to their two instructors who stay with them all week, and off they go!

There are at least 6 activities a day, and sometimes more, as the majority are in our own beautiful 25 acres of fields, woods, and river valley, interspersed with delicious, filling meals, home cooked with many of the organic vegetables and fruit grown by us. The children sit with their groups and their instructors in the dining room so there is plenty of supervision and the family feel. Special diets can be catered for as long as we know in advance. They sleep in comfortable bunk bedded rooms, again with their own age group, supervised by night staff who make sure the younger ones particularly wash and clean their teeth! The activities, games and tasks are ‘awesome’ – from canoeing to high ropes, archery to colony game, assault course, crafts, rafting, climbing, tunnelling, egg drop, zip wire, trekking, pizza making in the clay oven, water slide, badger watching…. the list is endless and the days packed. There is even a 24 hour challenge for the oldest group – they go offsite to map read their way to the rendevous, trek, maybe cave, maybe climb and abseil, maybe canoe; all is revealed at the briefing.

We even organise a rail escort from Paddington to our nearest rail station in Somerset on the Sunday morning and back again on the Saturday afternoon, so that parents don’t have to flog down the M3/A303 on a hot summer’s day. And we send taxis to meet children from airports and make sure they catch the right plane back at the end of their stay.

20 - March 2015 l Rascals of London

Over 50% of children return year after year as it becomes part of their summer. They also make great friends, become more independent, confident, self reliant. They return home grubby, tired & very happy, asking ‘when can I go next year?’ Book online at www.millonthebrue.co.uk For offers & introductory discounts call 01749 812307

ou may have noticed sporadic images in the press of the cutest looking babies wearing specially fitted helmets. Such helmets are commonly used when babies are born with slightly misshapen heads, a medical condition referred to as Deformational Plagiocephaly. Sometimes known as ‘flat head syndrome’, it is a common condition and occurs when external force causes a baby’s head to take on an abnormal shape. It is characterised by the flattening of one side of the back of the head and can be noticeable from birth, or present itself in the first few months of life. Research also suggests that there may be links to auditory, visual and developmental problems later in life. This is a situation that is experienced by many parents across the UK every day – and one of the world’s leading treatment centres for this condition and other head shape abnormalities is Steeper Clinic, which is based in Marylebone, London. Head Clinical Specialist Orthotist at Steeper Clinic, Kate Chauhan, explains:

“Instances of plagiocephaly have increased dramatically in the UK over the last few years, but there is still a lack of knowledge amongst many health professionals and parents about the condition.

“At Steeper Clinic, we provide free consultations for parents from across the UK on the best treatment option for their child. We can recommend treatments including repositioning techniques and if necessary, can provide a clinically effective programme of treatment through STARband helmets, which have been successfully used all over the world.” Tina Ashton’s one year old child, Samuel, was diagnosed with plagiocephaly in June after he developed a nasty cold and conjunctivitis and she took him to a GP. She was told that her son’s head was not the shape it should be and if it didn’t improve by the time Sam was 18 months old, there was a chance it would stay that way. The GP suggested making an appointment with Steeper Clinic to gauge the severity of Sam’s condition. When the family visited the clinic in July, tests revealed the asymmetry of Sam’s head was 23.3mm – 12mm is classed as a severe case. The treatment needed meant fitting Sam with a helmet, costing £2,000, which needs to be worn for 23 hours a day, over six months. Now Tina is calling on health chiefs to do more for the treatment of ‘flat head syndrome’:

“The results have been amazing. Sam got used to the helmet very quickly. We’re already starting to see a visible change in the shape of his head, and we couldn’t be happier with what Steeper Clinic has done for us.” “I really feel that the NHS should be offering some sort of funding to help parents throughout the UK.”

STARband is the leading orthotic treatment for deformational plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) in babies aged between 4 and 18 months. Over 125,000 babies have been successfully treated using STARband worldwide. Steeper Clinic is located at the Bendall Mews Consulting Rooms, 6 Bendall Mews, Marylebone, City of Westminster, London, NW1 6SN. For further information on the clinic, or for information on plagiocephaly and treatment options, please visit www.steeperclinic.com.

Playdates

Playful

Playdate Ideas everyone and easy on you. Hosting a playdate that´s fun for

Crafts Simple crafts are usually the best. Kids love to colour, cut and paste. Center the craft on a season or even pick a theme for the week. One idea is to cut out shapes and let the kids glue them onto paper in any way they like. They might make vehicles or people or houses. Another idea is to look online for colouring sheets of favourite characters and allow the children just to colour. Stickers are fun, especially the foamie stickers that are available. You’d be amazed how much kids socialise while doing crafts!

Play-Doh Play Date

Container Sandbox

Even when the weather doesn’t cooperate, let the kids play like they’re outside by converting a large, shallow plastic storage container into an indoor sandbox. Filled with sand or even rice, and peppered with shovels, cups, and trucks, it becomes a sandy getaway.

Dance Party When all that pint-sized energy threatens to soar out of control, crank up the tunes and let the little ones boogie the wiggles out. Boost the playdate fun by playing Sit-Down Dance: When you pause the music, the kids scramble to find a seat (the floor counts). Unlike musical chairs, no one ever gets out. You can even invite a few stuffed-animal dance partners to join the hoedown.

26 - March 2015 l Rascals of London

This activity is perfect for children ages 2 and above. The downside is you might have a little mess to clean up, but it’s amusing and will be time well spent. You can purchase some play-doh of different colours and let their imaginations go wild. To add some fun, buy a play-doh kit where they can squeeze, shape, and build it. You might add in some cookie cutters and other objects to help enhance their creativity. Another idea is to make edible play dough, which would provide a fun twist.

Build an Indoor For This is great for younger children especially. You can build an indoor fort using blankets, chairs and other furniture. Children will love playing in the temporary playhouse. You might even read a story in there with a flashlight if you want to.

Playdates

Pajama Day

Have kids come to the playdate in their favourite PJs. Serve popcorn (watch the popcorn with younger kids as it can be a choking hazard) and watch a short movie or read a story together. Have kids tell about dreams they have had or draw pictures of their dreams. You can even have everyone bring a flashlight and turn off the lights and play ceiling tag with the lights on the ceiling.

Football & Skipping For this, we go to a local park with a large open grassy area. Each child brings one ball to play with, and we make sure to have a skipping rope on hand for the kids to use in their own way. None of the kids can actually jump rope, but it’s interesting to see how they use one!

Cooking Plan a simple item for the kids to cook or even just put together. Kids love to make their own pizzas. If you make the cookie dough, they can cut out cookies and decorate them. Make a yogurt parfait by letting kids choose i tems to layer into a cup. Of course, eating the creation is half of the fun!

This one might create a mess too, but it’s fun! Most children love to paint and express themselves. You can purchase some inexpensive watercolour paints and paper. Be sure the children are wearing old clothes, cover the table with newspaper, and let their creativity run.

Plant Pals Playdate Plastic cups, potting soil, grass seeds, stickers, and markers are all you need to start cute grass heads that will grow very quickly in a sunlit window.

Mixed-Up Hide-and-Seek Virtually all kids are partial to hide-and-seek, either because they love the challenge of finding a hidden friend or they thrill to the suspense of waiting to be found. But with toddlers, the game can be a challenge: The littlest ones can’t count, and they’re not great at staying hidden, preferring to belt out “Here I am!” than wait to be found. For longer-lasting playdate fun, turn the game on its ear by taking turns hiding objects - think socks or small toys - rather than people. Another option: Let the little ones hide together, while you search s-l-o-w-l-y for them.

Board Game Day Using simple games, teach young children to play board games together. Games like The Dinosaur Race Board Game are great for younger kids. Snakes and Ladders is

Dress Up

Movie Mania

Parents can easily create an inexpensive dress-up box at home that can provide hours of fun and their little fingers are learning to tie, zip, button and snap. Dress up play also encourages language skills as kids explore the colours and textures of the clothes.

Give each child movie and concession tickets, or you can give them play money to “buy” movie tickets and refreshments. This is a great opportunity to practice pretend play and making purchases. Set up the kitchen counter or table to look like a concession stand, offering foods such as popcorn, hot dogs, nachos, pretzels, candy and beverages. Watch the movie. You can also select an episode of a children’s show if a movie will be too long.

Playdates

Musical Fun Playdate This one is kind of silly, but the kids will really enjoy it. Gather up as many musical toys that you might have, then add in homemade instruments such as a pan with a spoon, sealed cup filled with rice, a bell, etc. If you want you can play background music, then have all children make their own music. It’s something different that they’ll enjoy. It probably won’t last long though, so be sure to have lots of toys for them to play with afterwards.

Colour Day If you don’t want to do costumes, per say, you can pick a theme such as a colour. Have everyone wear red, serve red foods, play with red playdough, and make a STOP sign craft!

Pretend Day Have a pretend day where kids come dressed in costumes. This doesn’t have to be for Halloween but just for fun!

Teddy Bear Picnic

Have a Teddy Bear Picnic where all the kids bring a Teddy Bear or other stuffed animal. Have a picnic on the floor with fun finger foods and read a Teddy Bear story such as Teddy Bear Teddy Bear Turn Around or Corduroy. If you have access to the song, The kids would enjoy dancing to it!

Dino Days Fossils Bury some premade “fossils” in the garden and tell the kids that archaeologists dig for fossils and give them a preschool explanation of what fossils are. After the kids dig for the fossils, make your own fossils using a premade fossil mixture that can be made...1 cup used coffee grinds...1/2 cup flour...1/2 cup salt...1/2 cold coffee you flatten it out like playdough and let the kids make imprints with different objects. You could use acorns, leaves, sticks, etc at the park... eventually the fossils dry.

9

Easter Egg Hunt

I’ve seen this done two ways – hunting for eggs filled with stickers instead of sweets or hunting for eggs filled with food that the kids then eat as a snack. The easiest way to host this is to ask each mum to bring 10 or 12 filled eggs per child, then have one or two mums place the eggs around the garden before letting the kids loose. For the 1-year-olds, you don’t even have to hide them at all – just lay them on the ground in plain sight! Rascals of London l March 2015 - 29

6. Stuffed pasta

Playdate

Food

Here are a couple of quick, easy and tasty ideas:

1. Traffic light pasta Make plain pasta (and this can have a cheese or tomato sauce with it) but have carrots, sweet corn and peas in it - easy, simple and healthy. Another variation on this is to make treasure hunt pasta - but a variety of veg/meat/ cheese etc in bottom of the dish and pile with cooked pasta - get children to ‘dig’ for treasure and see what they can find.

2. Naan bread pizzas I discovered these a couple of years ago - the kids can make their own and they are ready in minutes! Buy some mini naan breads and get the children to spread them with a tomato based sauce and then add whatever they would like - so ham, cheese, chicken, sausage and half cherry tomatoes - simply grill for a couple of minutes and serve.

3. Wraps or tortillas I came up with this to try and encourage my own children to join in when we had chilli. Simply cut tortillas into thirds and give to children to stuff their own. Have bowls with chicken, ham, sausage, cheese, tomatoes, cream

cheese, grated carrots, sliced peppers, guacamole etc, giving them a great chance to experiment - also messy fun whilst eating as can all be done with fingers

4.

You can now easily buy large pasta shells which if you pre-cook can be stuffed by children with spinach and mushrooms as shown in the photo.

Pancakes

Easy to make and again very versatile with fillings - fruit, ice cream and yoghurt are always big favourites…. and if you are feeling very creative make your own fruit sauces.

5. Presentation It’s slightly gimmicky but fun to make ‘normal’ dishes more appealing by presentation. I have just done mashed potato volcanos with beans spilling out and halved sausages up the sides. You could also try jacket potato pirate boats - scoop out the potato and mash with cheese and re-fill - make a ‘mast’ with slices of bacon or sausage ‘oars’ on cocktail sticks and a ‘sea’ of gravy with some vegetable islands. And let’s not forget puddings!

7.

Fruit kebabs or fruit salad

Allow children to make their own and help with the chopping as well – most fruits are easy enough to cut with blunt/plastic knives.

Make playdates fun and tasty with these healthy snacks

8. Chocolate Dip Provide a selection of fruit strawberries, grapes and bananas are ideal, or shortbread and marshmallows with cocktail sticks for dipping.

9.

Spaghetti bolognese or carbonara Favourites with most children, are good filling dishes, easy to make and messy and fun to eat!

10. Ice-cream Make an old favourite more exciting with sprinkles, sweets, sauces, grated chocolate, chopped nuts, or some fruit if you’re feeling virtuous!

Temper Tantrums

Temper Tantrums Written by Kathryn Mewes Author of The 3 Day Nanny

How to handle your child’s meltdowns without losing your cool It all seems to happen so fast. One minute you have a baby in arms and the next minute they are walking and talking and have the ability to say ‘No’ to anything you ask of them. This is when many parents can feel ‘out of their depth’ and I can totally understand why…

Temper Tantrums

If you are trying to leave the house for an appointment with your 2 year old who is just refusing to get dressed what do you do!? A Shout

B Cancel the appointment

C Bribe them with sweets

The fact of the matter is that all of the above are likely to still have your child in their pyjamas and you feeling frantic!

Let’s Start at the Beginning As adults we all have rules that we have to abide by – and the reason we abide by them is for two main reasons… Following a rule leads to a reward. Breaking a rule leads to a consequence. I am sure that many of us would drive our cars a lot faster on the road if we did not think we could gain points on our license or, worse still, have our license taken from us. Children love to know their boundaries. If they do not have clear ‘rules’ there is no possible way of knowing ‘right from wrong’.

STEP ONE Implement some ‘House Rules’. Sit with your husband , partner and talk about what you both expect of your child. Are you happy with them jumping on the sofa? , or opening the fridge and helping themselves to the contents? Is bed time a set time? It is an interesting discussion to have and it allows you to unite as a couple and ensure that you are ‘singing from the same hymn sheet’! Example of House Rules for a family with a 2 and 3 year old. •  We do not shout at one another.

STEP TWO What if the rules are ignored!? In general most people want to know the consequence to not following the rule. Children are no different. There is no point in placing the ‘House Rules’ on the fridge door if you are not going to make the children aware of the consequence.

•  We do not jump on the furniture or the    beds. •  We sit on our chairs at meal times and    do not get down until we have finished. •  We remember our ‘Please and Thank you’. •  Everyone in the house is to keep each    other happy. Sit down as a family and read out the rules. Place them somewhere that everyone can see them. State that House Rules are for everyone to follow. Adults and Children.

50 - March 2015 l Rascals of London

Bend down in front of them and make eye contact. Smile at them and say “The shouting is all finished now. You can come into the kitchen when you are ready. (State an activity that you could do together – build the train track) At this point you can walk into the kitchen / playroom together or walk away and let him come when he is ready.

Consequence System ASK - Bend down and hold the top of your child’s arms. Gain eye contact and calmly ask them to do as you have asked. Step away and give them the chance to follow the request. (10 seconds) TELL - Bend down and make eye contact again. Talk in a clear stern voice and tell them what you want them to do.

WARN - Now bend down and make eye contact. “You need to choose. (State request) or MAT.” “1, 2, 3!” Give them a couple of seconds to respond.

ACT - “Come with me. You made your choice.” Hold them under the arms from behind and walk them to the doormat. “Stay here until I am ready.” Confidently walk away.

•  We always do what Mummy and Daddy    have asked us to do. •  We do not hurt one another.

You are wanting to hear them feel the consequence. They need to be placed back on the mat as many times as it takes until they are shouting. When they are shouting this is when you know that they understand that you are in control and they made the wrong choice and now are ‘paying the price of the consequence’. Once they have remained on the mat for 10 seconds and you can hear that they are calming down and the shout is becoming a whimper. This is when you can approach them – but not before.

The Door Mat! Most houses have a doormat, but if not a naughty step is fine. Ensure that the door is unable to be opened by your child. This is where they sit ‘until you are ready to bring them back into the room to play. YES, THEY WILL KEEP GETTING OFF OF THE MAT! Each time they follow you, turn around and hold them under their arms and walk them back to the mat and sit / lay them down. DO NOT TALK TO THEM.

You might have had to return them to the mat 40 times! But I can guarantee that the next time you ask your child to do as you have asked they will start to think before making the wrong choice! Eventually when you say “ Think, close the fridge or sitting on the mat!?” They will start to respond by making the right choice. Ensure that you thank your child when they make the right choices. It is so important to allow your child to shout when they need to. Frustration and anger needs to be expressed. We must never suppress a child’s emotions. As long as you have a place in your house where your child knows they are allowed to shout this will cause you to be more relaxed if a tantrum occurs.

STEP THREE Out and About It is more challenging when you are out if your child decides to ‘shout it out’ but it is so important to make your child aware that you will still have a consequence in place. Talk to your child about where you are going and what the consequence is. It is important to have this chat before reaching the destination.

Family Example: You are going to the park and you know that the challenge is that your son does not like to share the apparatus. •  Bend down and make eye contact once    you are in your coats and ready to leave    the house. •  Talk in a positive fashion. •  “Now, We are going to have fun at the    park and you are going to be my good boy.”

*

Temper Tantrums

will be sitting you under the tree by the    buggy. You will stay there until I am ready.    Just like the mat at home.” •  PAUSE •  “Do you understand (say their name)?” •  You do not need a response. Wait a couple of    seconds and then say “Great. Let’s go and    have fun.”

•  PAUSE

•  When you get to the park go straight to    the tree and say “Remember share nicely –    or tree!”

•  “Now, if you do make the choice not to    share and be kind to the other children I

•  Place your hand on the tree so that he    sees and fully understands.

The 3 Day Nanny by Kathryn Mewes is published by Vermilion on 7 June, £12.99, and

Common Challenges for pre-order and on publication from all good bookshops. Refusing to get dressed in the morning.

Important Message

•  Lay the clothing out on the carpet in your    child’s bedroom the night before.

On lookers do not judge the parent who disciplines their child. They judge the parents who are turning a blind eye! Feel empowered by disciplining your child – others around you will learn by your example!

•  Lay out 2 options of outfits and let them    choose.

Once you have a system in place and your child knows the rules and what occurs if they do not follow the rules you tend to find that the tantrums become few and far between. Children take comfort in knowing that their parents are in control. Remain consistent with the consequence system – it works! Discipline is not easy.

•  Aim to get dressed before going into the    kitchen for breakfast – Get dressed in the    bedroom.

•  This avoids the discussion in the morning.

•  If your child refuses to get dressed – •  “I will come back when you are ready    to get dressed. If you want to stay in    your pyjamas you will have to stay in bed.” •  Stand up and walk away and close the    bedroom door behind you. •  Let them shout in frustration and once the    shouting has calmed to a whimper you    can continue to help your child dress in    their bedroom. NEVER try to dress a child    when they are in a fury.

Refusing to put on shoes. •  DO NOT attempt for a child to put on their    shoes unless you are totally ready to leave    the house yourself. •  Get yourself entirely ready with your bag    and the buggy at the door. •  Give your child a 5 minute warning that    you are soon to leave the house. •  Set a timer and let them know that when    it sounds you will meet them at the front door. •  Once the alarm sounds give them a    moment to complete what they are doing. •  Guide them to the front door and open it    “Let’s go”. •  Simply slip your child’s feet into their shoes    or sit them down close to the front door    with their shoes and wait outside on the    doorstep for them.

•  Did I bend down and make clear eye    contact?

Believe in your child – they are capable of behaving and doing as you ask. Give them clear direction and the time they need.

•  Did I give them the time they needed    to adjust to doing the task? •  Did I warn them of the consequence? •  Am I being consistent with my discipline    system?

Refusing to come to the meal table. •  Set the timer 5 minutes before the meal is    served. •  “When the timer rings it will be dinner    time. Enjoy your last 5 minutes play before    we eat.” •  When the timer rings give your    child a moment to come to the    table without you asking him. •  If he is ignoring it go and bend    down in front of him and make    eye contact. •  “Time for dinner (state name).” •  PAUSE •  “Dinner or Mat (state name). You    choose. 1, 2, 3!” •  You now have to thank your son    for coming to the table or sit him    on the mat! If you have other children they will understand what you are doing. Explain this to them and ask them to continue with their meal. When one child is being disciplined you will find your other child looks on in fascination. They are not likely to misbehave to get the same treatment.

Temper Tantrums

If you can answer all these questions with a ‘Yes’ and your child still decides to throw themselves on the floor and ‘shout it out’ – leave them! Give them freedom to express themselves and calm themselves down and then continue with the day!

Consistent discipline empowers you as a parent.

Siblings arguing and fighting. It is all part of the sibling bonding process – brothers and sisters in disagreement. It is important that you allow them to manage these situations. DO NOT step in unless you feel that one is genuinely going to be hurt. DO NOT fight your children’s battles. Let them resolve things together. BASIC RULE: Do not intervene unless one of them shouts out for you. Stand back and give them the impression that you are not watching them or concerned. You will not always be there for your child. Give them the independence and confidence to mange situations alone. So when your child says ‘No’ to your request stop and ask yourself the following:

Pasta and Pesto

Simple

A simple pesto pasta that kids can make. Adding parsley to the pesto sauce helps to give a good green colour. You could add a few chopped sunblush tomatoes to the spaghetti with a sprinkle of some pine nuts.

Recipes

Method: Toast the pinenuts in a frying pan until lightly golden. Stir them so that they don’t burn, remove from the pan and leave to cool. Measure the parmesan, garlic, parsley, basil, sugar and cooled pine nuts into a food processor and whiz until finely chopped. Slowly add the olive oil while the motor is whizzing. Add the water and season. Spoon into a small bowl. Cook the spaghetti in boiling salted water, drain and put back into the saucepan. Add 4 to 5 tablespoons of pesto and toss together. Sprinkle with extra parmesan before serving. You can freeze the extra pesto.

Method:

Pasta

This vegetable pasta has a lovely light sauce with vegetables which can be served with almost any kind of pasta and you can vary the vegetables according to your taste. I sometimes use peeled deseeded and chopped tomato instead of cherry tomatoes. You can make the sauce in advance and then cook the pasta just before serving.

Cook the tagliatelle in a large pan of lightly salted boiling water according to the directions on the packet. Heat the oil in a heavy bottomed frying pan and sauté the onion and garlic for 3 minutes. Add the yellow pepper, broccoli and courgette and sauté for about 7 minutes or until tender. Stir in the crème fraiche and the vegetable stock and bring to a simmer. Stir in the cherry tomatoes and simmer for 1 minute, then stir in 50g of the Parmesan cheese and season to taste. Toss the drained tagliatelle with the sauce. Serve with the extra Parmesan cheese to sprinkle on top if you wish.

with Strawberries & Toffee Souce Its fun to make pancakes and you can try tossing and catching them in the pan. I love these thin pancakes with a strawberry filling and irresistible warm toffee sauce. They are also good served plain with lemon and sugar or with a little golden syrup. You can make the pancakes in advance and freeze them (interleave with non stick baking paper) and then thaw at room temperature for several hours,

56 - March 2015 l Rascals of London

Method: Measure the caster sugar and flour into a bowl. Make a well in the centre. Crack in the eggs, then slowly add the milk and beat until smooth. Heat the oil in a small omelette pan. Pour a little of the mixture into the pan and tilt to coat the pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Carefully turn over and cook on the other side, then slide onto a plate while you make the rest. Place one pancake on a board, spread a tablespoon of cream cheese in the centre of the pancake. Arrange a few slices of strawberries over the cream cheese. Fold in half and then in half again. Repeat with the remaining pancakes. To make the toffee sauce, melt the butter in a small pan. Add the sugar and cream and slowly bring to the boil. Remove from the heat and add the vanilla. Pour a little of the sauce over the pancakes.

Chattering away to your baby is even better for them than reading

Development

talk By Melissa Dahl

baby

Parents of tiny babies: When you’re home with the kid, keep a one-sided conversation going about anything and everything while you’re folding laundry, making dinner, or doing whatever else around the house. A steady stream of idle chatter from mum or dad’s mouth improves the child’s cognitive development, even more so than reading to them does, according to the results of a study recently published in the journal Language Teaching and Therapy.

Aisling Murray, of the Economic and Social Research Institute in Ireland, initially set out to investigate the importance of reading, and whether reading to infants was associated with higher scores on indicators of cognitive development than other language-based interactions between parent and infant, like talking. She expected that reading would win out; the question, really, was how much better reading was for language skills. Murray used data from the Growing Up in Ireland study, which included a sample of 7,845 infants. Parents were asked how often they read or spoke to their 9-month-old infants, and Murray and her team found that parents who said they “always” talked to their baby while doing

things around the house tended to have babies who scored higher on a test designed to measure babies’ burgeoning problem-solving and communication skills; reading to the baby regularly, in comparison, was also associated with an increase in problem-solving and communication skills, though not to the same degree. Murray explained some potential reasons why parents who babble away to their infants may be improving their babies’ cognitive powers: Talking directly to babies possibly encourages the baby to attempt to engage in two-way communication and better focuses their attention on (their) input, although this isn’t a hypothesis we can test directly with this particular research. And talking to the baby is something that can happen very frequently throughout the day, and is easier to combine with other parenting tasks, whereas reading to an infant might only be for a few minutes a day a couple of times a week. Reading is still important for children’s development, of course. But this finding is good news for busy parents, as it suggests something incredibly simple they can do for their little ones, which doesn’t take any extra time. As Murray concludes in her paper, “Even for parents ... who lack time to sit down to focus on reading a story, this research suggests that just talking to the child and engaging him or her in an (apparently) one-sided conversation can make a positive contribution to the child’s cognitive development.”

Reading

It’s never too early to encourage a life-long love of books in your children

Raising a Reader Nurture a love of books and words in your child. How do parents turn their children from novice or even struggling readers into kids (and later, adults) who will consistently turn to reading as a source of pleasure? There are several rules of thumb that the experts agree are building blocks to raising enthusiastic readers.

I

t all starts with reading aloud. And reading aloud should start from birth. The more words your child hears from the beginning of her life, the bigger her vocabulary will be - which will pave the way when she learns to read herself. Have plenty of books in the house. Keep books in the bathroom, on the bedside table, in the backpack. Get your child a library card as soon as she is old enough, then take weekly or biweekly trips to the library. If the thought of frequent trips to Waterstones sounds like a budget-buster, visit a used bookstore. Model reading for your children by being a reader yourself. Make a point of reading a book or the newspaper while your children are in the room.

70 - March 2015 l Rascals of London

As your child gets older, look for areas of common interest and read together. If your preteen son is an athlete, read the sports section together or get him a subscription to a sports magazine.

Let your kids be in charge of what they read. Allow your kids to select their own books,

even if they’re too easy. And it’s OK if she wants to read junk once in a while, as long as she’s reading a variety of things. Parents who try to exert too much control over the content of their kids’ reading risk fueling the perception that reading is a chore. Another tactic that can be effective for children who are struggling with reading (or just beginning to get the hang of it): giving small rewards. For frustrated or new readers, the intrinsic pleasure in reading just isn’t there yet, so it’s OK to offer extrinsic rewards, such as movie tickets, TV privileges, or even a pound or two, in exchange for concentrated reading time.
