BABY Wearing

If you have a newborn at home, you’re likely carrying them for hours on end. That’s totally normal. Newborns want to be near you, on you and held by you. But this need that your baby has can make everyday life a lot trickier. How are you going to text that friend you’ve been wanting to see for so long, if you have a baby in your arms? How about pouring yourself a glass of water or carrying grocery bags? One word: babywearing!

YOUR GUIDE TO BUYING ASLING OR CARRIER Are you fed up of using a buggy and fancy a stroll with your baby closer to you? A baby carrier or sling allows you to carry your baby on your front, hip or back, leaving your arms and hands free. This can be a very convenient and practical option, allowing you to get on with other jobs or playing with older children. Some people choose to use them instead of a buggy, due to financial, lifestyle or space constraints, whilst others use them occasionally as an additional piece of kit for times when using a buggy is not practical, such as when travelling. Here are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing your baby carrier or sling for your little one…

16 l SUMMER 2019 l

SUPPORT The carrier or sling should be able to support your baby and be comfortable to wear for you and anyone else who is using it. Even if it states that it is suitable for newborns upwards, make sure your baby meets the minimum weight requirement. Your baby should be able sit upright, with their air passages clear. A newborn baby carrier is designed to support their head, back and developing hips and spine because their joints are soft and flexible. The baby carrier must hold their legs in the recommended ‘frog leg’ position, with their knees level with or higher than their hips, and the thigh supported to the knee joint. This ensures their hips are not over stretched, and the balls of their hips to sit adequately in their sockets. Slings should support your baby’s back in its natural curved ‘C- shape and the fabric should be snug enough to support your baby.

TYPES OF CARRIER’S AND SLING’S Modern close baby carriers and slings come in a huge variety of styles and choice to suit all budgets and preferences. Wrap sling: Baby slings and wraps are long pieces are fabric, which wrap around you and your baby. These wraps can be spread comfortably across you and worn in a number of different positions, including front, hip and back carries. Learning to get a good fit can be tricky at first but they can be ideal for newborns. Ring slings and pouches: These are worn over one shoulder and consist of two pieces of cloth with two rings sown at one end. The free end is looped through the rings, forming a pouch for the baby. These can be worn on your front, hip or back. Unless they are adjustable, these will need to be exactly the right size for you and cannot be shared. Soft-structured baby carrier: These are like back packs with thick straps that go over the wearers shoulders and a padded waistband, so your baby can be inward or outward-facing and in some cases, on your hip. They offer a mixture of ease, comfort and convenience and can be used on much older children. Some may be unsuitable for babies below a certain weight without the use of an additional infant insert.

IS IT SUITABLE FROM NEWBORN? Some carriers don’t accommodate newborn babies - check the lower weight limits. Some will require extensive adjustment or an extra purchase of a special insert. A carrier for a newborn ideally keeps them upright on your chest, with support underneath right up to the back of each knee. Supporting the head and neck to lie on your body, with their mouth and nose clearly visible, and “close enough to kiss”.

IS IT ERGONOMIC? It’s a great buzz-word, but what does it actually mean? As a rule of thumb, this means something which grows with them, so look for a carrier with an adjustable seat, getting wider as they grow to maintain a hip-heathy, seated carrying position. For your comfort, the carrier should have a mechanism for tightening which encompasses both adult and child, allowing the weight to be distributed around your torso.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST? Some carriers can last your child for years. Look for the upper weight limit, and how many carrying positions the carrier offers. Many can be used on the back as well as the front, and can support even heavy toddlers well, without strain to the carrying adult.

DOES IT FIT? A badly fitting carrier can be uncomfortable for you or your baby, even if on paper it should work for you. If at all possible, try before you buy - it can be a very personal thing, and what fits one person may not fit the other.

FIT It is important that you fit your sling or carrier correctly and that it fits your body. Follow manufacturing instructions and most will have video instructions on their websites. Always double check clips and fastenings every time you use your carrier or sling. The British Association of Babywearing Instructors also offers guidelines regarding safety of babywearing. It recommends to

BENEFITS OF BABYWEARING: 1   Because sometimes, a pram is a pain 2   Multi-tasking has never been easier

• Tight for adequate support • Close enough to kiss (your baby’s forehead or head) • Keep baby’s chin off their chest to ensure breathing isn’t restricted • Supported back so the baby can’t slump and restrict their airway      Here’s whats our , Infant Carrying Specialist, Nicola Lawson, has      to say.

3   Effortless bonding with that special

Hands-free parenting.... Using a baby carrier keeps them close and happy whilst you get on with the business of life, whether that is looking after older children, or enjoying the great outdoors. All babies have a need to be close - rocking, patting and shushing are instinctive human behaviours. Babies thrive on the reassurance of a solid adult body against theirs, feeling protected and warm - and studies show that babies cry a lot less when they are carried. Using a carrier makes it easier for you to explore and navigate the world together, you can take them wherever your feet will take you. In those early years of parenting, that can be remarkably freeing. But with hundreds of carriers on the market, where do you start?

From Womb to World -

Cocoonababy Helps Your Baby Adapt to Life on the Outside

It’s such a precious and monumental moment when your baby is first placed in your arms instantly, as new parents, you’re filled with joy and love for your newborn. For your baby, it’s also a time when they leave behind their snug, warm ‘home’ for the last nine months. The security of their habitual cramped yet comfortable darkness is replaced with bright lights, open space, shapes and movements. It is therefore, completely understandable that after leaving their cosy confines, baby is startled with how far they can now stretch their limbs.

Introducing the Cocoonababy (RRP £130). Suitable from newborn to approximately three months, the Cocoonababy can be used as a daytime lounger to help ease transition from mummy’s tummy to the outside world. Plus, it can aid baby’s development too! Welcoming baby gently into the world, the Cocoonababy offers baby a comforting, reassuring, womb-like surrounding through its slightly inclined, semi-foetal cushioning. Importantly, it can also help limit the onset of some of the most common adaptation difficulties that can upset babies during their first months including reflux, colic and waking with a start, as well as improving the overall quality of their sleep. Designed with health care professionals and used by thousands of parents worldwide, this safe, lightweight and portable cocoon can be used room-to-room or popped in the car to take out when visiting family or friends near or far.

18 l SUMMER 2019 l

Features and benefits of the Cocoonababy:

•  Improve the quality and length of your   baby’s sleep •  An adjustable wedge that adapts as your   baby grows •  Reduces the involuntary jerky movements    of the limbs •  Reduce gastric re-flux and colic •  Limit the risk of flat head syndrome •  Lightweight and portable •  The Cocoonababy® foam is protected by    two removable, breathable and washable    covers: A waterproof protective cover, and    a fitted cotton sheet

You might be Pregnant 1. SWOLLEN AND TENDER BREASTS Soreness or tingling in breasts is one of pregnancy’s most common symptoms. Early in pregnancy breasts will fill out and change shape as they prepare to produce milk. Breasts may become very tender and sensitive for a few months as a result. But, Teresa Pitman, doula and lactation expert, notes: “that not all women experience these changes, especially if they have been on birth control pills.”

2. DARKENING AREOLAS For many women, hormones can cause the areolas, the circles around nipples, to widen and darken during pregnancy. This occurs as the body prepares itself for breastfeeding.

3. SPOTTING About five to 10 days after conception, some women notice light spotting when the embryo implants in the uterus. So if you’ve had a light period this month, you might still be carrying a little bundle of joy.

4. URINARY FREQUENCY OR CONSTIPATION When you’re pregnant, your uterus presses directly on the bladder leading to more frequent urination. The added pressure and intestinal changes may also cause constipation. Of course, the more a baby grows, the more the uterus presses against the bladder and other organs.

5. FATIGUE Many women feel very tired early in pregnancy (it takes lots of energy to

create a baby!). In fact, fatigue is often one of the first signs of pregnancy. If you are pregnant, chances are you’ll start to feel less tired around week 12, when the placenta is fully formed.

6. NAUSEA Nausea is one of the most common side effects of pregnancy. It’s caused by an increase in hormone levels (about 80 percent of women experience “morning sickness” during the first 3 months of pregnancy). For many, this nausea is not necessarily confined just to the morning – some feel it all day long.

About Miscarriage www.womens-health.co.uk

Having a miscarriage is a very difficult experience for most women. Whether they miscarry at 6 weeks or 16 weeks, there are lost hopes and disappointments. While this grief is natural, blaming yourself in any way is not. It is, therefore, very important for couples to understand what can cause a miscarriage, and to dispel misconceptions and old wives tales about miscarriages. About 15% of pregnancies end in miscarriages. Sometimes the body miscarries because there is something wrong with the baby, and this is nature’s way of taking care of the problem. Sometimes the body miscarries because of a problem with the woman’s uterus or with her eggs. Whatever the reason, it’s important to understand that virtually one out of every five pregnancies ends in a miscarriage. If you think that you are alone when you miscarry - you aren’t. You’ll probably find, if you start to talk to your friends, many of them have miscarried as well.

WHAT DOESN’T CAUSE A MISCARRIAGE? First, let’s take a look at misconceptions about miscarriage. Normal levels of exercise, sex and work do not cause miscarriages. Vomiting, even heavy vomiting, does not lead to a miscarriage. Lifting heavy objects once in a while also doesn’t cause a miscarriage. In general, if you fall or hurt yourself, this is unlikely to cause a miscarriage unless the injuries are severe enough that they risk your life. A lack of sleep and a bit of stress also don’t cause miscarriages. Some women assume that if

26 l SUMMER 2019 l

they are always tired, or if they have stress in their lives, these may cause the problem. Although there is research to suggest that stress may play a role in miscarriage, there is no evidence to support the theory that it, alone, causes a miscarriage.

WHAT DOES CAUSE A MISCARRIAGE? While we can’t point directly to items that cause a miscarriage, we can examine the factors that might make one more likely. Age is certainly a factor, as women over 35 have a higher risk, and women whose partner is over 40 also increase their risk. If you’ve had at least two miscarriages already, then this also increases your risk of having more. If you have certain health issues, you also increase your risk. These include diabetes, cervical and uterine problems and other chronic issues.

BEHAVIOR THAT LEADS TO MISCARRIAGE While most normal activity does not increase your risk of miscarrying, there are certain behaviors and activities that do. These activities should be avoided whenever possible to help prevent miscarrying. Smoking, drinking alcohol and using drugs all lead to a higher risk of miscarrying. Caffeine is thought to lead to higher levels of miscarriage as well. The research on this issue is not conclusive, but researchers have tied high levels of caffeine to more miscarriages during the first trimester. There are certain tests, such as the Amniocentesis test, that also tend to slightly increase your risk. It’s important to talk to your doctor before any invasive test to discuss the risks.

MOST MISCARRIAGES AREN’T PREVENTABLE A miscarriage is very sad, but not something that a couple should blame on themselves in any way. It is important to take the best care possible that you can before and during your pregnancy - eating right, exercising and sleeping enough. It is important to understand the factors that lead to miscarriages and to avoid old wives tales and misconceptions. Hopefully, even if you experience a miscarriage this time, you’ll be able to look forward to a successful pregnancy and a beautiful baby in the future!

ARE THEY FOR YOU? By Hannah Dahlen

Giving birth is about a lot more than having a baby - it’s about making mothers and growing families. The right support people can help enormously in making sure that the ingredients are there for a wonderful start to life. Some women are turning to doulas for this support.

College, says it means being with women and couples in labour and postnatally. “Our job is to listen to the needs and requirements of women and create a positive labour atmosphere that allows parents to feel empowered and positive so that they move into the postnatal period with a newborn well, happy and empowered,” she said. Are doulas the same as midwives?

WHAT IS A DOULA? Doulas are women trained in giving other women professional birth support — they essentially mother the mother. These women have reawakened the ancient tradition of having supportive, knowledgeable women present at births. Doulas generally meet a woman and her partner during pregnancy and support her during the birth and sometimes also in the early postnatal period. Some doulas, however, just do birth care or postnatal care. These women usually attend the birth, whether that be at home, in a birth centre or hospital. Doulas provide emotional and physical support for the woman and her partner during birth. Renee Adair, director of the Australian Doula

28 l SUMMER 2019 l

Doulas are not midwives and therefore not trained to provide any clinical advice or examinations. Doulas cannot provide antenatal care, deliver babies or provide the clinical aspects of postnatal care. Midwives work closely with doulas but the roles are very different.

WHAT SERVICES CAN A DOULA PROVIDE? •  Access to resources and information about pregnancy, labour and birth. •  Information about classes, such as preparation for parenthood, yoga, etc.

frightened and feel unsupported, you begin to secrete adrenaline. During labour this has a negative effect, as it inhibits the production of the most important hormone in labour, oxytocin. When this is inhibited, labour slows down, often leading to interventions in birth. Hint: Look for calming people when choosing support for your birth.

•  Assistance with writing a birth plan. •  Care and support during pregnancy, such as massage, making sure you drink, keeping your birth environment peaceful, helping you with birth positions and use of water for pain relief, encouraging you and advocating for you. •  Some postnatal support for you and the baby and the ability to contact lactation consultants and other professional support should you need it.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A CALMING SUPPORT PERSON •  Calm in a crisis •  Always positive •  Loves you •  Makes you feel safe and comfortable

•  Intuitive to your feelings and needs • Nurturing •  Good attitude to birth, with no personal baggage

Having the right support person can help make the birth a better experience. Research indicates women who receive close support and care throughout labour are less likely to need pain relief or have major interventions such as caesarean section, forceps or a vacuum delivery. They are also more likely to be satisfied with their birth experience. Doulas have been shown to have a similar effect on women’s labours and births. Check out what women say about doulas and if you know someone who has used one, chat to them about how they work. Jenny said the doula she had for the birth of her first child Jack was wonderful.”I knew Mark [partner] was worried about the birth and I thought I needed some other support, for both our sakes really. Our doula just made us feel relaxed. It was like she knew what we needed next and what would work best, but she never took over.”

Where a woman cannot find this sort of person or people in her circle of family and friends, a doula can be invaluable. It is important that if you choose to have a doula at your birth, your partner and other support people meet them and interview them about their practices and philosophies. If you have children and they will be at the birth, then make sure they become familiar with your doula as well. You want to make sure when the big day comes you are a team all going in the same direction — your direction!

This service can be of value to women who do not have adequate support and/or can’t access a continuity of care midwifery program, where they get to know one midwife or a couple of midwives. Women who do not have many friends or family around for support at the birth can also benefit from a doula. If you have a partner who is very anxious about the labour, then a doula may be calming and reassuring to both of you. Partners who really don’t want to be at the birth can be traumatised and also potentially detract from the whole experience.

WHAT IS THE COST OF HAVING A DOULA? Doulas will charge anywhere from $400 to $1500 to support women through the birth. The cost will depend on their level of experience, the amount of time they spend with you before and after the birth, as well as any other service they might provide, such as massage, aromatherapy or hypnotherapy. How can you choose the best support people if you don’t use a doula? Giving birth is one of life’s most emotional, intimate and instinctive experiences. The people you choose to experience this with need to be respectful of this fact and be able to enhance, not detract, from the experience. Women need to feel safe in order to labour. If you become

After Giving Birth Your body has spent months nurturing and growing your baby. All the changes that helped to bring your baby into the world are now abruptly reversed.

Written by Dr Goldstein, Therapist and lecturer in psychology.

Changes after giving birth are inevitable. Family takes on new meaning when having had your first child, and the chances are that the way you thought before having your child does not apply so well anymore; a couple of things need to be re-thought and the chances are you may have to adopt a new way of thinking.

ssues such as your Relationship to work, family, intimacy, responsibility need to be thought through again, processed for new meaning, and value allocated to them in turn. You will often hear that priorities change... that is because they do! How this happens, and the way you (partner, family and friends) handle the process of change is important. Transitions can be daunting, and you need support in making that shift in your mind from whatever was before to what is now: you and family. Below I have described a few things that may support you in this shifting thought process, give you an idea of ‘normal’ thoughts, and help you transition at a time when certain adaptation is required.

needs a little thought to go along with informed actions. It also takes a while for grandparents to realize that they have children who have become parents (just like them!) and are not solely their children any longer.

Ask your partner for help if you feel snowed under, and convey your intentions, these actions will come a long way.

FAMILY Relationships change drastically once you have a baby, your position in the family takes on new meaning. Relatives have different expectations of you now, to be a good parent, to contribute to the education of your baby etc. They want to be involved in family life. This can be demanding, and

These attachment bonds that went on for so long between parent-child are renewing themselves, changing for all parties involved. The realization of change can bring more loving connections or more distant ones, the ties are generally maintained, supportive but can also be

a little strenuous. Explain how you feel to your parents if you can, and find help with a friend when trying to manage other’s requests of you.

Intimacy is an important part of your life. Your relationship to your partner is just as important as your relationship to your baby, and if you see it that way, it will allow you to at least value your relationship when there is less time to exclusively focus on it. Intimacy is sometimes hard to maintain when a baby is so dependent and needs you 24-7... How to find time with your partner and engage in loving acts whether physical or thoughtful ones? Of course taking care of your baby is taking care of your ‘couple’ and your growth together, but should not come at the expense of your relationship to your partner! The complicit care and love in your couple is what will remain once your child is all grown up, every step of their development children take more steps away from you, so you’ve got to keep it all in perspective... They will leave! Talk with your partner as much as you can and engage in compassion, passion and love.

l SUMMER 2019 l 33

RESPONSIBILITY Your response-ability will now have changed, you will no longer feel responsible for yourself with a neat barrier around your actions thoughts and feelings. They will now extend to your babies actions thoughts and feelings. The physical response-ability you first feel when you have your baby is quite a change, but also so deeply felt that your body finds the ability to carry you through, after that the mind needs to start playing its part.

Their mind-body connection is at no time so sharply felt! The way you think and feel when having a baby to care for is completely different; the way you see work, outings, friends, and so on and things you previously thought such as ‘being sooo very busy’ can now be thrown out of the window. Life looks so different with another pair of lenses on! Family may become more important, going to the park or taking fresh air might also be on your priority list. Things change and your value of the world does too. Make a note of these changes, small changes of the everyday, and think about the leap of faith and courage you have to muster up to brave the stormy waters.

Eating takes a different turn now. You are feeding baby as an ‘extension-of-yourself’, and therefore will be affected; less or more hungry depending on how feeding your baby affects you. Feeding is a form of care and love, and includes the action of ‘giving’, how do you give and love yourself at this point in time, and how much are you cared for by your partner... does your partner sometimes feed you in the evenings, or make you a coffee in the mornings? Eating can be thought of as a form of ‘give and take’; you may sometimes need more care from others, and on some other days are more able to feed others and yourself.

Although there are lots of studies that show that it is the love that parents give that is of utmost importance, feeding is part of that love. Take time to eat, feed yourself the right amounts, take time to chew on food and process your day. It’s gratifying to do so.

On a positive note, it is considered a normal reaction to feel down and perhaps depressed when going through times of stress, loss, and change. If it may have been impossible to ask for help earlier in your life, now is the time to seek help and be on the receiving end! You will find empathy in places you hadn’t imagined, and as awareness grows of the difficulties starting a new family can entail, there will be different sources of help available to you. Your health visitor will be there the first few weeks, and here after if you wanted to call on the assisting team for support. Your GP is also generally quite a good source of support if feeling ill, or having concerns with regards to your baby. Other more specialised services are available such as talk therapy, or support from another mum through a mum’s online network, or foundation that specialises in supporting women and men with postnatal depression. There are also sleep specialists available to help with training baby to sleep well through the night if this is proving to be challenging, and some good books around to support you in understanding your child’s developmental stages, and tracking your baby’s growth.

TIME Time flies once you have a baby. Suddenly there’s no time for doing bits of work at home, cooking or enjoying a nice diner, or calling a friend. Having a baby is time consuming and the way you organised your time before, changes drastically. It takes time to get into the flow or rhythm of time again, this time incorporating childcare. When you wake up baby has to get dressed and ready for the day – you are not alone anymore! In the early evening, baby has to get ready for bed, bath, story and so on you may have to cook something once baby is in bed, but generally speaking you will only be able to return to yourself, probably being quite tired once baby is in bed. Keep a diary with a time sheet to get an overview of your busy day, and remember; you deserve a treat too. If you opt for postnatal therapy, you will generally get emotional, practical as well as educational support in various areas to help you through this challenging time (all of the above) - and get the added personal relationship which can be healing in and of itself. Parenthood is a paradox of happiness and - pain, loss, and change, take the time to care for yourself, and you’ll find some beautiful ways to live peacefully with the challenges ahead.

BABY WEIGHT By Laura Williams

Personal trainer and nutritionist, Laura Williams, guides you through the easiest ways to tone up and safely drop a dress size in four easy steps! It’s only natural to have put on a few extra pounds during pregnancy and no doubt you’ll want to beat the bulge now your baby has arrived. Sound like an uphill struggle? Not with these common-sense tips that won’t interrupt your routine.

Step 1:

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT •  Banish all biscuits, cakes and crisps form the house - will power will only take you so far if fattening snacks lurk alluringly behind a cupboard door. •  Have an abundance of fruit and high-fibre, lowfat foods available instead - they will keep hunger pangs at bay without you piling on the calories. •  Good food choices to have around the house include soup; fresh fruit (especially apples, bananas and kiwis - all good sources of antioxidants and fibre, filling you up at the same time as giving you a sweet kick); and low calorie soft drinks and a variety of herbal teas that you can sweeten with honey. •  When the going gets tough, keep yourself busy - even if it’s just by doing housework. While you’re busy, mentally line up a non-food reward for not giving into temptation. This will ensure losing weight doesn’t become all about denying yourself the finer things in life.

Step 2:

THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING Treating yourself to a pair of new walking shoes is a great way of encouraging you to get out and get walking. There’s also a health benefit, as old shoes will have lost most of their cushioning and there’s also a health benefit, as old shoes will have lost most of their cushioning and support.

between your knees. Your arms should be folded behind your head. •  Breathe in and, as you breathe, out, slowly lift your head and    shoulders off the floor and squeeze the cushion as hard as you can,    remembering to keep your stomach pulled in tightly so that your    back is flat on the floor. Hold for five seconds before lowering and   repeating. •  Try to aim for 10 curl ups, and complete this routine three times a   week.

•  Always have a walk around the shop when buying to ensure the    shoes are comfortable and wear the same socks you’ll be walking    in to try your shoes on. •  Find a pair that are lightweight and breathable and look for a low,    supportive heel that rounds at the end - a thick heel or one that    sticks out will cause your foot to slap down rather than roll, making    you more prone to sore shins. Make sure there’s plenty of room in   your shoes. •  You’ll need at least a finger-width gap after the end of your longest    toe, and don’t forget to measure when you’re standing up rather    than sitting down.

Step 3:

REAWAKEN YOUR ABDOMINALS If you were active through your pregnancy and had an uncomplicated birth, you can get started straight away. Before you start, however, do the ‘rec-check’: a check on your stomach muscle the rectus abdominus, to see if any gaps in the muscle have healed: •  Lie on your back with your knees bent and, with you palm facing    you, place the fingers of your left hand just above your tummy   button. •  As you slowly exhale, lift your head and shoulders off the floor and    slide your right hand up your thigh towards your knee. •  You should feel your stomach muscles tighten, and feel a gap    between the two edges of the muscles. If this gap is three or more    finger widths, you’ll need to delay abdominal exercises - if in doubt,    check with your midwife or GP.

Step 4:

BOOST YOUR METABOLISM Toned muscles can help your body burn calories - or increase its metabolic rate. Muscle tissue requires up to nine times more calories to maintain than fat tissue: this means that with a few simple exercises, you can create a lean, mean, calorie burning machine! Try doing two sets of 20 repetitions of the following exercises twice a week: Wall slide with bicep curl: tones thighs and arms •  Lean your back against a solid wall, with your feet    approximately 12 inches in front of you, shoulder-width   apart. •  Hold cans of soup or bottles of water at either side,    palms facing forward. •  Slowly slide your body down the wall towards the floor    until you reach 90º at the knees and hold this position. •  Keeping your elbows close to your body, slowly curl the    cans upward into your shoulders, before returning to   the start.

If your muscles are getting back to normal, try the following two-in-one exercise that will help strengthen and tone both your abdomen and pelvic floor.

Tricep dips with leg raise: tones thighs, calves and backs of arms

•  Lie on your back with your knees bent and pull in your stomach    muscles in the lower part of your abdomen.

•  Sit on a chair with your hands shoulder-width apart on   the edge.

•  At the same time, locate your pelvic floor by tensing the muscles as    if you were trying to stop peeing mid-flow.

•  Slowly lower your body off the seat, towards the floor,    until your elbows reach 90º. As you do this, lift and    extend one leg in front of you.

•  Maintain these contractions for a count of 10, relax, and repeat. You can then add in another two-in-one move to tighten your tummy and inner thighs.

•  Bring your leg back in as you straighten your arms and    push back up to your starting position. Then relax your    leg, before switching legs and repeating.

•  Lie on your back, with your legs bent and a cushion sandwiched

Pregnancy Fitness

Safe or not? Safe

BARRE CLASS “Barre classes are a wonderful, mostly low-impact form of exercise for elongating your muscles,” Pinto says. “I recommend against turns, jumps, and leaps after the first trimester due to your changing equilibrium and center of gravity, which makes a fall more likely, but slow-tempo exercises in the center and at the barre are perfectly safe. Even simple small jumps are okay when you are landing on both feet at the same time and you don’t need to change your center of gravity.” In other words, as long as you maintain your balance and stay close to the barre to grab onto and avoid falling, these classes can be a safe bet.

PILATES Similar to yoga, Pilates elongates your muscles while you coordinate your breathing to your body’s movements. “Pilates is safe given that that you don’t overstretch or, if you’re using a reformer [specialized Pilates equipment], that you don’t increase the level of resistance beyond what you could comfortably do before you were pregnant,” Pinto says. Again, avoid lying on your back—you may need to ask your instructor for modifications.

38 l SUMMER 2019 l

Hands-down, swimming wins the award for one of the safest exercises for pregnant women, experts say. “Swimming puts no pressure on your joints and ligaments, while the buoyancy of the water helps a pregnant woman not only exercise but also feel lighter while doing it,” Artal says. You can certainly get a great workout and torch tons of calories without any impact. That’s what makes this exercise one of the best bets for pregnant women. Also, look for classes in your area that combine, say, strength training and cardio in the water. Running and walking in the water are great, too.

YOGA “The benefits of yoga are exceptional because it relaxes your mind and stretches your body,” Pinto says. It can be an excellent way for an expectant mom to clear her head and deal with any anxiety she might have about her pregnancy or getting ready for the new baby. However, it’s important to take some precautions. “Be mindful of the risk of overstretching in the second and third trimesters, when the hormone relaxin surges in your system to open your joints for childbirth, making strains more likely,” Pinto says. Of course, avoid inverted poses like headstands and also lying on your back, especially if doing so makes you dizzy. As your uterus grows, lying on your back can put extra pressure on the blood vessels that bring blood back to the heart, causing your blood pressure to drop, Artal explains.

Not Safe TRAMPOLINE “While the cardio exertion of a trampoline workout is safe, the risk of a fall or stumble that sends you flying is something to seriously consider,” Pinto says. “Weigh your desire to do this kind of workout against the risk of a fall when your equilibrium and center of gravity are off balance due to pregnancy, and you’ll probably decide it’s not worth it.” Artal adds: “Every single jump up and down can end up in a fall and result in an injury. It’s such an unnecessary risk.”

HOT YOGA While yoga can be an excellent option for pregnant women, hot yoga or Bikrham yoga is a definite no-no for now. Such yoga classes involve doing poses in a room heated to 100 degrees or higher. “Any activity that leads to overheating is not good during pregnancy,” Artal explains. “Exposing a fetus to high temperatures can cause a condition called hyperthermia which, in turn, can lead to birth defects and premature labor. Dehydration can also lead to premature labor.”

CONTACT SPORTS “Contact sports carry a risk for injury not only to the mother but also to the fetus such as a premature separation of the placenta and other complications,” Artal says. “For instance, any boxing classes that involve actual contact with another person come with an unwarranted risk.” Same goes for other contact sports, such as basketball, soccer, and hockey. Skip them for now.

HEAVY-LIFTING CLASSES Some classes focus on heavy lifting at a very fast pace and experts are very wary of such workouts. “During pregnancy, a woman’s joints and ligaments can relax considerably, and lifting very heavy weights can cause permanent damage to such joints and ligaments, ” Artal says. There’s also higher odds of various risks to both you and your baby. If you still want to engage in such workouts, first run it by your doctor to see what she says. Then, work with the fitness instructor to tailor your workout based on your particular pregnancy (including how far along you are). Better yet, Pinto says, focus on weight training that uses your own body weight for resistance, not added weight.

“A spin class is a great option for a no-impact workout in a climatecontrolled space that you can do at various levels of intensity, depending on how your body is responding,” Pinto says. “You can engage in a high level of effort as long as you don’t experience any warning signs such as dizziness, a racing heart rate, or blurred vision.” However, you have to take several things into account, Artal says. For instance, make sure you don’t become overheated. “When your core temperature exceeds 102 or 103 degrees, that can lead to birth defects during the first eight to ten weeks and can also lead to premature labor throughout pregnancy,” he says. “Dehydration can also lead to premature labor.” The key is to stay hydrated, avoid overheating, and use a lot of common sense.

HIGH-INTENSITY TRAINING Some classes focus on keeping your heart rate elevated for as long as possible, which is definitely not safe during pregnancy. “Very high intensity workouts divert the blood flow from the internal organs, such as the uterus to the working muscles,” Artal says. “In effect, you are depriving your fetus of the proper exchange of oxygen and nutrients during these activities. Having your heart rate elevated for a few minutes at a time might be fine, but it’s certainly not okay for a full hour.”

Colic Coping with

8 Point action plan to help cope with Colic Many babies are diagosed with colic, but in reality there is no medical definition for the term. Colic defined as excessive reasons for bouts of inconsolable crying, such as reflux, digestive intolerances or allergies. In most cases, a combination of diet, feeding, medicine, routine and sleep can help manage the symptoms.

“Colic is poorly understood, it’s not an actual medical condition, but just a term for excessive, frequent crying in a baby who appears to be otherwise healthy and well fed. It can occur for no reason, but it often has an underlying cause, such as non specific abdominal pain, cow’s milk introlerance or reflux- where the valve at the top of the stomach is immature, leading to acid pain and vomiting,

“Babies with colic often get a lot of comfort from sucking, which is likely to be why they want to feed so often, to try to stretch the feeding time you could try to temporarily introduce a dummy. This will soothe and give him something to suck on while you’re trying to implement the new, more structured, feeding plan.

2. GET INTO A REGULAR FEEDING ROUTINE “The first thing to tackle with a colicky or reflux baby is their routine. If your little one is eating too much and too often: breastfeeding on deman, and typically feeds every two hours during the day and almost contantly at night. This could be contribuiting to his symptoms. During the day, try to stretch him out to a three-hour feeding schedule, which means feeding him five times during the 12 daylight hours.”

42 l SUMMER 2019 l

4. CALM CONSISTANT BEDTIMES “Evenings are typically the hardest time for babies with colic, and and they’re especially difficult when you’re trying to get your older children into a bath and bed. A calming evening routine will help the baby to wind down and feel soothed at his most difficult time of day, so begin to implement a soothing bedtime regime that coincides with the needs of your two older children, who go to bed around 7pm”

5. SHIFT POSITIONS Parents tend to cradle a colicky baby face-up, but that may not help. Instead, hold her face down -- with your hand under her belly and her head on your forearm. The pressure on her tummy can help relieve uncomfortable gas.

6. BABY MASSAGE The soothing power of your own touch can work wonders on a colicky baby. Many babies love skin-to-skin contact. And studies show infants who are massaged seem to cry less and sleep better. Just undress your baby and use slow, firm strokes over her legs, arms, back, chest, and face. It may calm you down as well.

For a gassy baby, rub his tummy in a clockwise motion, or bicycle his little legs to relieve some pressure.

7. GIVE HER A BURP A crying baby can gulp down a lot of air. That can make her gassy and bloated -- and make her crying worse. Burp her with gentle thumps on her back. The classic position -- with the baby’s head over your shoulder -- works, but can leave a trail of spit-up down your back. Switch things around: Lay your baby face down across your lap, or sit her up. Support her chest and neck with one of your arms.

8. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF One of the most important pieces of advices we can give you, is to make time for yourself. Colic can be tough on mums as well as babies and it can be exhausting and stressful. Sleep when you can and accept all offers of help. Whatever you do - don’t blame yourself or feel you are not doing an amazing job.

Take a Breather Night after night with a colicky baby is hard on parents. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and not up to the job. If nothing seems to work, take a break. Hand the baby off to your partner, a family member, friend, or sitter. When that’s not an option, remember that it’s OK to let your baby cry in the crib for a little bit while you collect yourself.

Whisbear Over 65% newborn children suffer from colic. In result, parents suffer too. To soothe the baby we turn to “home-made” solutions to stop the colic. Eventually we all arrive to the same conclusion hairdryer’s shushing sound works the best! Shushing is the natural acoustic environment for newborn children - they remember it from their mother’s womb. All they can hear there is shushing. Running around your house with a hairdryer is uncomfortable and tiring and although recordings of shushing can be found on the Internet, it is not an ideal solution. And thus Whisbear - the humming bear - was born. Friendly shushing in hand’s reach is our parental mission! Whisbear is a superhero - always near your child, it comes to the rescue! Whisbear guards the baby’s sleep. Whisbear is something more than a shushing teddy bear. They are a great plan to help suffering little ones and their parents in the colic-induced pain. l SUMMER 2019 l 65

Making Weaning THAT LITTLE LESS DAUNTING Feeding a growing and increasingly hungry baby can be one of the biggest challenges parents face every day, especially when trying to provide healthy meals quickly. To help make weaning that little less daunting we spoke to Nichola Ludlam-Raine, Registered Dietitian and Mummy Blogger at Mummy Nutrition.co (@mummynutrition on Instagram) and here is what she had to say

WHAT IS WEANING? Weaning is the gradual introduction of foods to a breast milk or infant formula fed baby and involves exposing them to a variety of different tastes and textures. During the initial stages of weaning, the focus shouldn’t be on how much your baby is eating, but rather getting them used to food and the idea of eating, as they will still be getting most of their nutrients from milk. As your baby eats more though, the proportion of energy from food will become more than that from milk.

WHEN SHOULD YOU START WEANING? Weaning should start when your baby is around six months old, provided they can hold themselves steady in a high-chair (or for a few seconds when sat on the floor), are able to bring objects to their mouth, and have lost their tongue-thrust reflex. This can be tested by placing a clean finger or baby spoon onto their lower lip; if they reactively stick their tongue out, then they are not yet ready to be weaned.

change image

66 l SUMMER 2019 l

HOW DO YOU TO START WEANING? From around six months of age your baby can be offered foods of a pureed or mashed consistency, progressing to foods with some lumps at around 7 months, as well as soft finger foods; for example cooked pieces of broccoli, parsnips, peppers, courgette and avocado, as well as banana, kiwi and pineapple. Starting with green vegetables such as broccoli, kale and spinach can be helpful in order to encourage your baby’s bitter and sour taste buds to develop. Their sweet taste buds are already mature, meaning they will naturally accept sweeter foods such as fruit more readily.

To make things easier (and save on washing up!) you could use a product like the Beaba Babycook NEO, which is a 4-in-1 baby food maker that will steam cook, blend, defrost and reheat. It’s ideal for steaming and pureeing foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, meat and fish, all whilst retaining valuable vitamins and minerals that can be lost during the cooking process. It’s really easy to use, plus you can set it to four different constancies depending on where you are in your weaning journey, from super-smooth, lightly mixed, small lumps or big chunks! Following vegetables and fruit, you should offer your baby foods such as porridge as well as mashed potato and soft bread sticks, in addition to soft pieces of foods rich in iron and protein, for example; slow cooked beef, dark chicken, turkey, fish (with no bones), eggs and lentils. Full fat, unsweetened and pasteurised yoghurts may also be offered however full fat cow’s milk shouldn’t be offered as a drink until your baby is 12 months old; it can however be used in cooking, on cereal or to mash up food. Baby rice can be useful to thicken purees if they come out too runny.

& Peach Weaning Recipe Green Beans

This recipe from Beaba’s Your Baby’s First Food cook book is ideal for babies aged from 6-months; after you’ve tried them with green beans and peaches on their own.

Initially babies need only to be offered food once a day, but you should build up to three times a day to mimic your own three meal a day meal pattern by 7 months of age. By the time babies are around 12 months old they should be eating at least three small portions of healthy family meals plus 3 small snacks in between. If foods are rejected, and the bitter vegetables will be, at least initially, keep offering the food as it may take several attempts for your baby to eat and enjoy it. Ingredients: 1 handful of green beans & 1 peach

Regarding fluid, it’s good practice to offer a small amount (no more than 50ml at a time so the cup doesn’t become too heavy) of water with a meal from a free-flowing cup to teach your baby how to sip. If your baby is under 6 months old the water should be cool-boiled. Breast-fed babies should continue to be offered regular breastfeeds but you may want to encourage a routine in order for weaning to progress. Formula fed babies should be offered around 500-600ml of infant formula across 3-4 feeds.

Method: Trim the green beans, wash them and drain. Peel the peach, remove the pit, and cut the flesh into small dice. Put the green beans and peach into the steamer basket, fill the reservoir to level 2, and cook for 10 minutes. When cooked, put the green beans and peach into the blender and blend to a smooth consistency. 8 STEPS To Weaning

We Love

1. Choose the appropriate

time. The success you have has much to do with when you decide to wean your baby from the bottle.

2. Introduce your child to a

beaker cup. This introduction can begin as early as 6 months of age.

3. Allow the baby to explore

the cup. He or she may even “play” with it rather than drink from it during the initial introduction. You will see him or her trying to use it as he or she becomes more familiar with it.

PERSONALISED ROYAL BABY BISCUIT TIN It’s no secret that here at Biscuiteers we love celebrating all things Royal, so it only seemed fitting to welcome the arrival of Royal Baby number two with a limited edition collection of royally good biscuits. Price: £43.50 .biscuiteers.com

4. Give the baby a beaker

instead of a bottle during mealtime. Begin using the cup at one meal for a means of liquid once the child is familiar with the cup. This may occur at 8-to-10 months old.

5. Use the cup instead of a bottle during other feedings.

6. Replace your baby’s bottle at

other meals slowly until all meals are eaten with a beaker cup instead of a bottle.

This extra-special biscuit card has been inspired by our favourite adventurous frog; Jeremy Fisher. Hand-iced to perfection our Jeremy Fisher biscuit card makes a perfect present for new babies Price: £10.95 biscuiteers.com

7. Remain consistent during

the weaning process. Going back and forth between the bottle and beaker cup during meals will only confuse the child.

8. Offer your child a beaker cup

instead of a bottle during other times of the day such as nap time, snack time and bedtime preparation. Most babies are ready to give up their bottles and formula at 12 months.

Trio of Root Vegetable Purée METHOD: 1. Steam the root vegetables for about 20 minutes or until tender. Steaming is the best way to preserve nutrients but if you don’t have a steamer, put the vegetables into a saucepan and just cover with boiling water. 2. Blend the vegetables to a puree adding a little of the boiled water at the bottom of the steamer (about 75ml) or some of your baby’s usual milk to make a good consistency for your baby. 3. Cover the pan with a lid and cook over a medium heat until tender (about 20 minutes). 4. Drain the vegetables and blend to a puree using a little of the cooking liquid or you could add a little of your baby’s usual milk.

Not only does it deliver the perfect bottle at the perfect temperature in just two minutes flat, it’s also sleep friendly, with special features that make night time feeding a dream.

WHY BODY TEMPERATURE? Warming baby milk to body temperature helps create a more relaxed and natural experience and it’s kinder on tiny tummies too.

KEEP LIGHTS ANDSOUND LOW With Perfect Prep Day and Night, you don’t risk waking the whole house preparing those night time bottles. Its gently glowing night light means you can see exactly what to do, even when you want to keep the lights low. No more cold sweats over those 3am feeds as even the most bleary-eyed parent can prepare the perfect bottle. A clear, easy to use digital display tells you what to do next. You can also turn down the volume on the beeps that signal each step of the process, so there’s no fear that you’ll wake the household as you prepare to satisfy baby’s hunger pangs.

PRACTICAL AND STYLISH Perfect Prep Day and Night comes in a choice of four different colours, perfect for the most stylish of homes. It’s compact and practical, so it won’t look out of place in your kitchen. Perfect Prep Day and Night is specially designed to give parents peace of mind, knowing that baby's bottle will be perfect any time of day or night. It’s so easy, you could do it in your sleep… or near enough.

Perfect Prep Day and Night makes bottle prep simple. Just chose the size of your bottle, add the formula and the machine does the rest. It dispenses the correct volume of water, using a built-in filter to remove any impurities, combined with an initial hot shot that kills any bacteria in the formula. That means you can have a body temperature bottle ready for baby in two minutes. It’s ten times faster than boiling a kettle and waiting for it to cool down.

Wet wipes - what would we do without them?

But if you’re still not convinced, here are our ‘Top Reasons Why’ biodegradable, plastic-free wipes are the answer to our wet wipe prayers: 1.You will have peace of mind knowing you are doing ‘your bit’ for the environment. Changing to a biodegradable version will help to reduce the amount of plastic pollution that we collectively send into the world’s oceans. 2. The vast majority of baby wipes on the market are not biodegradable because the fabrics used to make the wipe contain plastic. It’s well documented that these fabrics can take many, many years to degrade. According to Water UK1, the trade body representing the main water and sewerage companies in the country, wet wipes are not only responsible for a staggering 93% of blockages in UK sewers, they are also the primary component of the infamous giant obstacles known as ‘fatbergs’. 3. Every wipe counts. It only takes a few wet wipes to clog up a drain. Plus, if they come in to contact with disposed fats and oils, ‘fatbergs” are created and can harbour in public sewers – even becoming as big as a bus. 4. Fabrics containing plastic are more commonly used as they are cheaper to manufacture but are much more damaging to the environment. When incorrectly flushed away, wet wipes that contain plastic actually break down into microplastics, which can be ingested by marine life, with fatal consequences. 5. Wet wipe pollution is reportedly “changing the shape of our river beds,” with more than five thousand (or enough to cover two football pitches) found next to the River Thames, London last year, according to environmental agency Thames 21.

From nappy changes and wiping messy faces, to mopping up spills and cleaning sticky fingers. Wet wipes are the go-to essential for parents everywhere.

6. Biodegradable wipes, such as Aqua Wipes are made from natural materials, so are less likely to irritate the skin too! Aqua Wipes are made from 100% Viscose, which is manufactured from Cellulose – a natural material.

But sadly, the impact on our environment caused by these seemingly harmless but convenient wet rectangles of ‘tissue’ means that perhaps we should take more time to consider the wipes we are using.

7. Be compostable – biodegradable wipes, like Aqua Wipes are made from 100% Viscose so they are completely compostable!

As parents or parents-to-be, many of us are already au fait with the difference between ‘regular’ wipes and pure water wipes, but when selecting our essentially ‘purer’ wipes, do we also think about what the wipe itself is made from? What many of us may not realise is that the wipes themselves are often made using plastic-based materials, such as polyester or polypropylene. As such, these types of wipes are not fully biodegradable. When these throwaway items are disposed of, they will break down in to smaller pieces, however in the process harmful microscopic fibres are released which are damaging to the world around us. But all is not lost! If, like many parents, wet wipes are a product you really can’t do without there are other options. One of which is to switch, or indeed ‘Wipe Swap,’ to a plastic-free, eco-friendly, biodegradable wipe instead.

76 l SUMMER 2019 l

8. And finally - The Government is threatening a widespread ban on wet wipes containing plastics, so moving to biodegradable plastic free wipes has never been so current. Get ahead of the game and switch now! Aqua Wipes are fully biodegradable wipes, created to be kind to the environment AND baby’s skin. These revolutionary wipes do not use plastic-based materials and contain 99.6% purified water with an organic Aloe Vera extract formulation. Used by special care baby units, neonatal and maternity units in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), Aqua Wipes are created with the environment in mind, while caring for even the most delicate skin.
