Central Bath Center | Shell Structure in Blobitecture
ACADEMIIC-Individual Work,2024[1rd year of master]
Supervisor:Jonas Lundberg,Kengo Skorick
Site:Göteborg,Sweden|Scandinavium
This is a central bath center project in Göteborg, aiming to be a subtitute of Scandinavium on the opposite. The project focuses on the parametric design with shell-structured roof and space in between.
Imagine two intertwined worlds, one atop the other, visible through a large, circular glass portal. The first world, 'Under Shell,' is a vast, subterranean space filled with various swimming pools beneath a layer of concrete. Above it, 'Between Shell,' a bath center nestled between concrete and a wooden structure, offers a contrasting experience. Visitors enter through a curved square on the street, descending underground to reach the first level, 'Under Shell.' This floor is a dedicated swimming pool center, connected to 'Between Shell' by two massive glass spheres, providing visual interaction between the two worlds. Here, people of all ages can find a pool suited to their swimming needs. Ascending to the second level, 'Between Shell,' visitors find themselves under a striking wooden roof structure. This area is designed for relaxation and socialization, featuring saunas and leisure spaces. There are also seating areas for spectators to view the pools below through the huge glass sphere.

This is an art museum in Shanghai Historical Landscape Protection Zone.Typology of the space of lane and translation from it to the museum space is main content of the project. [Ⅰ] LANE IN THE BOX | Light room and Dark room
In such a historic neighborhood, it is important to preserve and continue the local culture. I found that there are many different types of space in the lane, which have similarities. Therefore, I decide to extract the lane space as the prototype in order to expand the types and apply them to the interior space of the museum.

Factory Transformation | Coexistence of Old and New
ACADEMIIC-Individual Work,2020[3rd year]
Supervisor:Wei Qin,Wu Qijing
Site:YangPu District,Shanghai,China|The former site of YangPu Qingdao Brewery
This is a factory renovation project, aiming to form cultural linkage with history of Yangpu Binjiang. The project focuses on the inheritance of factory elements and the possibility of factory transformation.
I made a survey of the surrounding business type.It was found that Dinghai Road is an alley which is full of markets and stores. A lot of residents bought daily necessities here. In the remains of the factory site, we can see the left structures, including the most distinctive characteristic, the round holes.
Fuction/Time Diagram
Due to the characteristics of people and functions in this area, I have listed a function list for the design and their peak time of using, so that I can have an idea of the demand for using in a daytime.
Circle and straight lines are extracted from the old site and are combined to create the single units.Every unit can be used in the left structure of factory.
New Texture, New Fuction
You can use these new textures to create a new world in an old factory, and I think it is a universal way to remodel a factory locally.
The ②sewage building was left with more old structures, and the building part was transformed into a museum. There are corridors to form urban public spaces. The ③saccharification building and ①canning building were demolished, leaving only the frames, which were transformed into a market and an amusement park respectively.

[Ⅲ] HOME IN THE GARDEN | Private part and Public part
Nursing home | Psychology-based Living
ACADEMIIC-Individual Work,2019[3rd year]
Supervisor:Xu Liang,Wu Qijing
Site:Changning District,Shanghai,China|Huayang Nursing Home
This is a nursing home program in an aging city,Shanghai. To pay attention to the demand of the old living through behavior psychology is the main purpose of the project.
How to meet demands of people inside and outside at the same time? Generation of
conventional type1: single volume a large courtyard-too closed
conventional type2: multiple volumes multiple courtyards and terraces-too open
Lacking public space is a common phenomenom in Shanghai ,especially for a neighbourhood in such a highdense community.I can imagine if there will be a new building here, people will look forward to have a look. Considering that people need space, designing shared space is an urgent thing to do.
In order to provide enough public space for people living around the site, especially the old, some vertical space attached to the architecture, which is called 'blended space'.I define the marginal space as 'blended space', who acts as a bridge between the nursing home and the neighbourhood.
Section of Blended Space
Figure-ground about Privacy Level
Site of the project is in Changning District which is an aging community with large population and lacks of high-quality public space. What's more, the aging population in Shanghai has achieved 35.2% by 2020.
Research on the olds' activities
The site where community activities happen can be divided into 4 catagories, including private space,semipublic,semi-private space and public space.I have a research on activities the old would like to take part in, the result suggests that semi-public space is the most type they need.
public space private space indoor space outdoor space
semi-public and semi-private
The figure-ground illustrates the boundary of indoor and outdoor space and the transition of space from private to public. The outdoor space is defined as public space, while the interior space is transformed from semi-public one to private one, so as to create space which suits the elderly in behavioral psychology.
The section has a gradual transition on the privacy level of space, from public to private, with a semi-public space in between. In this way, old people living here are able to share their public space with people outside without disturbing the old at rest.
The entrance of the nursing home offers a public space for the old's social activities.
The public block offers a library and a fuction hall for some activities to be held.
Dining room serve as a central fuction. It's a ‘blended space’ between the public block and living unit.
Living unit is a private space. It is comfortable to stay in the interior space to enjoy the landscape.
Outdoor Space
Central courtyard is a public but quiet space in the nursing home, offering the old a place to relax. It can meet people's basic need for the nature and provide an outdoor site for some activities like walking or exercising.
Terrace around the living block is a semi-public space for both old people in the nursing home or ones living aound here. It's a ‘blended space’ mixing the boundary of the nursing home and local neighbourhoods.Adults can take chlidren up here, which will be a scenery for the old inside.

[Ⅳ] DRIVERLESS STREET | Transit space and Standing space
Street Transformation | Sustainable Street Modularization
This is a street traformation program in Hong Kong.To explore how streets might change in the context of driverlessness and how to use modularization in the urban design are main purpose of the project.
Author:Muyu Chen
History of Transit in Hongkong
One benefit of better connected AVs is the opportunity to give higher priority to pedestrians. Roads will, therefore, be able to be narrower, with fewer lanes. In existing urban areas this means wider sidewalks that can accommodate other functions such as linear parks, dedicated drone delivery lanes. The reduction in localized car parking facilities will free up more space in the city for parks.
Combined with a lot of previous research and collation of history, we found that Hong Kong has a large number of compact streets and a lot of surface parking lots. Autonomous drive will lead to fewer lanes and denser roads, and the surface parking lots will be abandoned.Transformation of these two kinds of urban space are in great demands in the autonomous vehicle world.
Autonomous Vehicle World: Changes of the street
Multiple surface parking lots
Three reasons why we use modules
<Stong flexibility> Three strategies of modularization
<Strong adaptability> Three types of sites
<Rapid expansion> Three stages of transformation in Hongkong
Modules of streets
Modules of parks
The modules are divided into three types according to the basic elements of urban streets: facility, road and greenery. Each type of module can be expanded and reformed in the future. In terms of management, modern technology can be deployed and the public is able to participate in the street design.
We chose an area with two types of street and parking lots as a pilot design with the modularization concept. As you can see from the master plan, there are two types of modular street, which are pedestrian street and street with car lanes. We widened the sidewalks and added street facilities to make the street more comfortable to stay . And we transformed the parking lots into pocket parks. In the 'Figure-ground relation', you can see the relationship between transit space and standing space.

We believe that we should make full use of the surface parking lots that may be abandoned. Therefore, we transformed them into pocket parks, which are divided into 2 types, sports-themed and leisure-themed.Sports-themed one targets on young people and children, and leisure-themed one aims at middle-aged and elderly people. Phase 1 (2022~2027)
The objective of the first phase is to complete the renewal of two streets (of two types) and a surface integrated car park within five years. This phase entails the completion of factory production of three types, with a total of 28 modules, in preparation for subsequent road and park renewals. This phase is at the beginning of the driverless era, with low usage of driverless cars predicted, so only two roads and one car park have been selected for renovation and renewal.
Sustainable Development of Streets
Phase 2 (2027 ~ 2032)
The second phase aims to complete the upgrading of a neighbourhood's roads and car parks within five years. This phase is in the development phase of the driverless era, where the usage of driverless cars is predicted to be comparable to the usage of regular cars, and therefore a block of roads and car parks are targeted for upgrading to make them more compatible with the road requirements for driverless cars.
Author:Muyu Chen
Phase 3 (2032~2037)
The third phase aims to complete the renewal of the roads and car parks in the remaining two blocks within five years. This phase is at the completion stage of the driverless era, where the renewal of human mobility is predicted to be largely complete, with driverless cars replacing ordinary cars, and therefore the roads and car parks in the remaining blocks will be targeted for renovation to completely complete the renewal iteration of the roads and car parks.
