FROM THE DIRECTOR RARA Families,

As we close out 2023 here at RARA I wanted to share some of the highlights. We had a ton of changes this past year - adding new websites for information and registration, investing $215,000 in our community center on 2nd St. to add classroom space and facility upgrades to better serve you, and hiring in some amazing new professionals who are loaded with great ideas! We provided activities and programs for another 10,000 participants in 2023; serving up summer camps, sports, special needs services, performing arts, fitness, arts, dances, date nights, and more... And that doesn’t include our big community events like Tons of Trucks, Craft & Vendor Fairs, and Mom2Mom Sales. Browse through this issue of our RECreation Magazine and see what we will be offering in the next few months. ABOUT US

Resident/Non-Resident: To receive the resident rate you must reside within the cities of Rochester or Rochester Hills. RARA is funded through a millage collected in the city of Rochester Hills and a comparable fee in the city of Rochester. Residency is not connected with the Rochester School District. Residency is determined by where you pay your city taxes. Non Residents pay an additional 20%, capped at $20 per program in addition to the resident rate.

Cancellation of Activities: RARA activities at community schools are canceled when school activities are canceled. Activities at 500E 2nd St along with other offsite locations will continue as scheduled unless otherwise posted. In addition, cancellation of programs will be determined by program supervisors as seen fit. Cancellations will be posted at: www.rararecreation. org, Facebook/Instagram/Twitter (@RARArecreation), and for some programs, registered participants will be notified via email.

Notice to Participants: Participants must recognize that all activities of a physical nature involve some risk, and by registering for a class/activity of this nature there is an assumption of risk by the participants. RARA is dedicated to providing safe equipment as well as qualified staff for all participants. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of RARA to: Contact emergency medical services to perform first aid, and when necessary, recommend transport of the victim to the hospital. Reach the parent/guardian/emergency contact as soon as the situation allows.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION This season, we are switching over to a new registration software called Sportsman. On December 1st, all of our January-April programming will be available on Sportsman and our old software, RecPro, will no longer be available past that point. We are excited to be able to switch to a different platform that services our needs as a recreation facility and will better guide us to serve our community. REGISTRATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM I PLAY @ RARA SCHOLARSHIP FUND

As the community provider for recreation our goal is to offer opportunities for all. In 2023, we have added a 1% fee to all transactions to help build our scholarship fund. This will allow us to set aside approximately $15,000 per year to help at minimum 130 community members who are experiencing hardship participate in activities we offer. On behalf of RARA and the community we serve, these funds provide much more than monetary subsidy. They are the foundation that builds community and creates memories that span a lifetime. We sincerely thank you for this investment in equity and inclusion for all of the residents of Rochester and Rochester Hills.

YOUTH BASKETBALL KINDERGARTEN-1ST GRADE COED BASKETBALL LEAGUE The K-1 league is coed and plays on 8 foot basketball hoops which allows for higher scoring games. Teams will have 2 practices and 5 regular season games with 2 weeks of single elimination playoffs with help from officials and coaches throughout the games. Team rosters will be determined by school. RARA does not take coach or friend requests. Volunteer coaches will be needed. Full jerseys, tops and bottoms will be provided. RARA BASKETBALL CLINIC This clinic is for beginning basketball players who want to improve. Join Coach Gresham as she teaches the fundamentals. This class will be focus on drills and games with an emphasis on team work. Participants will be developing basketball skills including but not limited to dribbling, passing, shooting, and footwork. Coach Gresham has coaching experience at many different levels including college. This class will push participants and encourage development. Pato Margetic & his trainers offer advanced soccer training for players ready to compete at the next level. Program is tailored towards intermediate & select/ travel players. Pato “The Magic Man” Margetic has played for the Argentina Jr National Team, Borussia Dortmund, the Detroit Express, Chicago Sting, was a professional player/coach for over 10 years & youth soccer coach/director for over 20 years which has given him the experience to train soccer players and develop them to the highest level. 10U VOLLEYBALL CLINIC In this clinic players will learn the game of volleyball with a personalized fun approach. The Start Smart Move and Play program is a developmentally appropriate introductory fine and gross motor skills program for children 2-3 years old. Developing these motor skills in a safe, fun and age appropriate environment will ensure that the participants gain strength and confidence in their body. It will help them get exercise and physical activity. Finally, developing these skills will help a child’s ability to do more complex skills in future activities, whether it’s playing a sport, doing school projects or drawing/painting. The Start Smart Sports Development Program is a developmentally appropriate introductory sports program for children 3-5 years old. TIGER CUB’S TAE KWON DO & YOUTH TAE KWON DO (Tiger Cub’s) We offer the Tiger Cubs classes for ages 4-6 yrs. This program offers young ones their first peek into martial arts. In this program, they will learn to develop motor skills while learning simple martial arts movements and techniques in a fun “no pressure” class. The main goal of this program is to help improve focus, discipline, confidence, and self-control that the younger children need. Students can purchase uniforms if they would like to but it’s not necessary. (Youth) This program is for 6 yrs and up. These classes are recommended for the students who really want to understand and learn martial arts. It is a more rigorous and intensive program than the Tiger Cubs. A little bit about Matt, I’m from the small town of Capac, Michigan. Graduated from Saginaw Valley State University in May of 2016 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Athletic Coaching. Married my beautiful wife in October of 2020 and have 2 little boys, Bryson and Bentley. I started with RARA in September of 2023. Right before coming to RARA, I was working for Amazon within their Robotics Department. Had been there 2 years and decided it was time for a change. Sports have always been a huge part of my life growing up and even now, so I knew it was time to get into the Sports and Recreation field. I choose recreation as a career because of Sports and Kids! I am very passionate about sports as a whole and seeing the joy it can bring children. Recreation was always a safe haven for me in my younger days and being able to provide that for the younger generation is very rewarding. The thing I love most about working with a lot of youth sports is being able to provide to them a healthy and active choice rather than a technology filled childhood. Giving people the opportunity to be in a team/individual sports atmosphere and impacting the youth community all at the same time was always a focus of mine.

MEET OUR DANCE, PERFORMING ARTS & FITNESS SUPERVISOR A little bit about Monica, I began my performing arts career at the age of 5, and throughout my life, have trained in dance, color guard, showchoir, band and musical theater. I have also worked in the public school setting, as well as own my own performing arts training and education business before joining the team at RARA. I am also currently training to be a color guard judge within the Michigan Color Guard Judges Association and will receive my certification by April of 2024. I am married, have 5 children (4 daughters and 1 son), and two cats that bring me joy daily!

Fun Fact about Monica, “I marched in the Tournament of Roses parade on January 1st, 1996, with my high school marching band/color guard, and we were the first band in Michigan to be chosen as a participant for the previous 25 years! It was not only live on the streets of California, witnessed by ¾ of a million people,it was broadcast in 25 countries to over 1 million others! It was quite the honor!”

JUDO For ages 7 +, Judo classes are taught by a certified USJF black belt with over 30 years of teaching experience, including 7 years in adaptive programming for peoples with special needs. Class emphasizes safety and respect for others while being fun as well. Beginner Judokas will learn to fall safely, as well as master the fundamentals of basic Judo (throwing and pinning; there are no kicks and punching) and can eventually earn belt ranks. Just wear long sleeve sweats tops and bottoms. Gis (uniforms) can be purchased from the instructor when the participant decides on a gi.

SCAMP SUPER (BOWL)ING FUNDRAISER Just in time for the real Super Bowl, join us for the Super BOWL SCAMP Fundraiser on Jan 20th from 1:30-4:00 at Avon North Hill Lanes! MEET OUR ADAPTIVE SERVICES SUPERVISOR A little bit about Kelsy, I am from Royal Oak, MI. I’m a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), and graduated from Grand Valley in 2019 with my BS in Therapeutic Recreation with a minor in Psychology. I have been practicing as a CTRS for 4 years, and I started with RARA in Sept 2023. Before I came to RARA, I was practicing as a Recreational Therapist within the schools, working with students of all ages and any disability. I also led various social engagement groups for adults with special needs, and worked with private clients to enhance their quality of life through recreation. I have a long history of working with people with special needs, starting in high school, continuing through college, and onto now. Recreation has played such an important role in my life, providing me with friends and experiences that I will never forget. I wanted to provide these same experiences to other people, and show that recreation is not only fun and games, but a necessity to a positive quality of life. Who wouldn’t want to do games and activities for a living? I love that my department serves people who are so dedicated to RARA, and they want to be a part of all the action! I love that RARA gives my participants chances to be social and try new things.

YOUTH CARICATURE CLASS: DRAW & GET DRAWN Is your child ready to learn to sketch cartoon faces quickly? Artist Andrew Sigman breaks down the process, making it fun and easy. Before class begins, he will do a souvenir drawing of each participant. BABYSITTER SAFETY/CPR/FIRST AID & SAFE HOME ALONE Topics include: First aid, when and how to call 911, CPR with manikin practice, choking, dealing with difficult behaviors, basic care methods like feeding and diapering, marketing and more! Students will also learn how to be safe and responsible when home alone, including the importance of not giving out personal information and what to do if somebody comes to the door. I graduated with my bachelors degree in Sports Management and Communications from Eastern Michigan University. I have a one year old son named Walker, a two year old Bernese Mountain Dog named Cora, and I’ve been at RARA for almost five years now! Before I came to RARA, I was working as a Recreation Program Assistant for Oakland Township Parks and Recreation. I choose a career in recreation because I wanted to create fun moments, social engagements, and memorable experiences for others in the community. I had so many wonderful memories growing up doing community events with my family and I wanted to give others the chance to have those same experiences!

SOCIAL EVENTS FINANCIAL REALITY FAIR PRESENTED BY GENISYS CREDIT UNION Ever thought about how you’d manage money when you grow up? Dive into Genisys Credit Union’s Reality Fair! Choose an awesome career, find a cool place to live, and even decide what’s for dinner—all while staying on budget. Navigate this real-life challenge through a super-cool app. Think you’ve got what it takes? Join us at RARA and step into your future! The Reality Fair simulates one year of independent living and teaches the students how to manage their finances with a set budget via an app. They choose a career, are assigned a credit score and have to navigate through buying housing, clothing, food, etc. It’s like a real world version of the Game of Life to better prepare them for budgeting. FAMILY BINGO NIGHT

Come to RARA and join us for a fun family bingo event! Children of all ages are invited to attend. We will be playing 1 line bingo and every winner will get to choose a prize. The grand prize will be a RARA gift card to be used for future RARA programs. Please only register 1 person per family. Cost is $25/family of 2 - 4 for residents and $30 for non-residents. ART CAMPS SCENT-SATIONAL ART CAMP: ALL DAY CAMP Come for the pretty pineapple printmaking but stay for the sweet citrus scent! In this class, we’ll draw, paint, sculpt and more, but we’ll do it all with a very special twist- these SCENT-SATIONAL works of art all smell as sweet as they look! Come learn the secret ingredients for sweet-smelling artwork as we create cute pointillism cupcakes, a field of tulips, and more. Yes, you read it all right- this class is full of scratch and sniff artwork that smells as sweet as it looks! Please pack a nut-free snack and drink for your child each day. MOVIE LOVERS ART CAMP: MORNING

Ready for a camp that will bring your love of movies to life? Get ready to create miniature version of SpongeBob’s Bikini Bottom, unleash your creativity as you make a clay Spider-Man, and sharpen your drawing skills with some help from everyone’s favorite snowman, Olaf! This is the AM camp the week of March 25. If you are interested in having your child participate in both the AM and PM sessions and need childcare in between, it is available. Lunch and Doodle is a great way for kids to extend their camp experience. Use Lunch and Doodle to create a full-day camp experience when signing up for both the morning and afternoon camps.
