What is the Greater Rochester Open?

Tournament director: Jerry Murphy

50 Years of Tennis Tradition: The Greater Rochester Open Celebrates a Golden Milestone

This summer marks a major milestone for one of the community’s most beloved athletic traditions—the 50th Annual Greater Rochester Open. For five decades, this tournament has brought together players of all ages and skill levels, creating a vibrant, competitive, and welcoming tennis community right here in Rochester.

What began as a simple end-of-summer event for junior players has grown into a multi-generational tournament featuring both youth and adult divisions, singles and doubles play, and a wide range of skill levels. Today, the Greater Rochester Open continues to embody the spirit of friendly competition, sportsmanship, and community connection that it was founded on.

At the heart of it all is Tournament Director Jerry Murphy, whose passion for tennis and dedication to youth development helped shape the event into what it is today.

Back in the mid-1970s, Jerry Murphy was serving as the varsity tennis coach at Rochester High School while also leading summer tennis lessons for RARA. Looking for a way to celebrate the progress of his students, he organized a small tournament as a culminating event for the kids participating in those lessons.

At the time, matches were played on courts near University Drive. But everything changed in 1977 when the Rochester Municipal Tennis Courts were built. With new, lighted courts available for evening play, the tournament found a permanent home—and quickly grew in popularity.

As interest in the junior tournament surged, adult players began asking for a chance to compete as well. Murphy listened, expanding the event to include adult divisions—and a long-standing community tradition was officially born.

Over the years, the Greater Rochester Open has evolved into a tournament that truly offers something for everyone. Today, players can compete in a wide range of divisions, from youth singles and doubles to adult open, age-based, and skill-level brackets.

The adult tournament, held July 21–25, features divisions such as Men’s Open Singles, Women’s Singles (3.0 and 4.0), Mixed Doubles, and multiple senior categories. The youth tournament follows July 28–31, offering competitive opportunities for boys and girls from 12U through 18U in both singles and doubles formats.

Despite its growth, the heart of the tournament remains unchanged: a welcoming environment where players can challenge themselves, improve their skills, and enjoy the game.

For Jerry Murphy, the tournament has always been about more than just competition. It’s about creating opportunities—for young players to grow, for families to connect, and for the community to come together around a shared love of tennis.

“Because the courts were new and lighted for play in the evening, they became very popular,” Murphy recalls. That popularity has never faded. Instead, it has been passed down from one generation of players to the next—many of whom return year after year, some now playing alongside or cheering on their own children.

As the Greater Rochester Open celebrates its 50th year, it stands as a testament to the power of community-driven programs and the lasting impact of passionate leadership. What started as a small youth tournament has become a cornerstone summer event—one that continues to grow while honoring its roots. Whether you’re stepping onto the court for the first time or returning as a seasoned competitor, this year’s tournament promises to be a special one. Here’s to 50 years of rallies, friendships, and unforgettable moments—and many more to come.
