The RARA Board is a policy making board comprised of 7 members, representing the governmental agencies that established our interlocal agreement, and individuals from each of the communities in which we serve. The board meets on the second Wednesday of each month, 5:00PM at the RARA offices, 500 E Second St. Rochester, MI 48307. 2nd & 3rd grade coed basketball league This coed league includes 3 practices and 6 games, with teams playing on regulation 9-foot basketball rims. Although some leeway is given to beginner players, officials will make calls in an effort to teach standard rules. Teams may play any style of half-court defense in the first half, and cannot steal the dribble until the second half. A 28.5-inch basketball is used for games. Team rosters are determined by school, and RARA does not take coach or friend requests. Fees include a Full Dye Custom sublimated uniform.

high school boys basketball league This league is open to players in 9th-12th grade, and teams will have 1 practice and 8 regular season games, with 2 weeks of single elimination playoffs. This is a team registration, and teams must have a coach/ manager for their team.

Both team name and manager must be submitted to RARA for our team to enter the team into the system, allowing players to pick their team name when registering online. Most teams create a Twitter account for their team and follow RARA Leaks (@LeaksRARA) for live updates, preseason activities and podcasts.

Fees include a Full Dye Custom sublimated uniform.

Cornhole social This is a social cornhole league for those 18+, capped at a maximum of 16 teams per league. Teams play 3-4 games each night against opposing teams, ending the season with a final (seeded) tournament to determine the winners of the league!

magic soccer lessons Magic soccer (3-4 year olds) This is a parent/child class that teaches the basics of soccer through fun and entertaining instruction. Players will learn the rules and basic techniques of soccer and practice their skills in small-sided games. This is an excellent way to spend quality time with your child while learning the love of soccer! Please bring shin guards, tennis or soccer shoes, a soccer ball if you have one, and a water bottle. magic advanced training Pato Margetic and his trainers offer advanced soccer training for players ready to compete at the next level. This program is tailored towards intermediate and select/travel players. Pato has a wealth of experience for players to learn from, having played for the Argentina Jr. National Team, Borussia Dortmund, the Detroit Express and more.

youth judo classes Join us for our youth judo classes! These classes emphasize safety and respect for others, while also being incredibly fun.

Beginning judokas will learn to fall safely and master the fundamentals of basic judo, including throwing and pinning — please note, there is no kicks or punching.

Participants can also eventually earn belt ranks. Classes are taught by a certified USJF black belt with over 30 years of teaching experience, including 7 years in adaptive programming.

Participants should wear long-sleeved sweatshirts and bottoms, and uniforms can be purchased from the instructor when the participant decides on a gi.

This one-day workshop is designed for dancers ages 8-12, and no prior experience is required. Throughout the day, dancers will learn basic tap steps, work with different rhythms and counting exercises, and learn a fun dance! Tap shoes are required.

This class has been updated! Tiny Toes is designed for ages 24 months - 39 months.

This exciting, creative movement class will help young dancers develop basic skills and rhythm while enjoying moving and singing to music. Class is taught using props like scarves, rhythm instruments and more.

Spring Dance Camp

This camp, open to dancers ages 5-7, is the perfect way to spring into the new season!

We will create fun springtime crafts, learn a new dance, and have a showcase on the last day to show off our new moves! Snacks are provided, but please inform us of any food allergies. For those with allergies, we recommend bringing your own snack. All dancers should bring a water bottle and wear either ballet or jazz shoes.

On the last day, parents are welcome to come to pick-up early to watch the dancers’ showcase and take home completed crafts from camp!

Contemporary dance This is a 12-week non-recital class for dancers 8-13 years old, focused on contemporary dance. Contemporary is a style of expressive dance which combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.

Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.

spring break camp Keep your kids entertained this Spring Break!

At RARA’s Spring Break Camp, campers will spend the week going on field trips and hanging out at RARA. In past years, these field trips have included the zoo, bowling, magicians, farms, movie theatres and more!

At RARA, campers can play games, use our turf fieldhouse, make crafts, and hang out with old and new friends.

Camp meets at RARA each day, and pick-up will always be at our 500 E. 2nd St. building.

Campers must be in at least first grade, and will need to bring a sack lunch every day. A detailed schedule will be emailed to parents a week before camp starts.

Latchkey is also available 7:30am - 9:00am and 4:00pm - 6:00pm for a flat fee of $36 for the week, regardless of hours used.

Summer Daze: A Q&A with RARA Recreation Supervisor, Makayla Kroening

Recreation Supervisor Makayla Kroening discusses what makes RARA summer camps the place to be in 2022.

Q: What’s your role with RARA Day Camps, and what’s new for 2022?

A: As the recreation supervisor overseeing Day Camps, I’m in charge of making sure all our camps are as fun and safe as possible! Each of our camps hold accrediation from LARA, the State of Michigan’s department for licensing and regulatory affairs, and follow MDHHS Executive Orders. We’re always working to make camps better each year, and I can’t wait for our campers to come back this summer. I can’t give all my secrets away just yet, but trust me, this is going to be a phenomenal summer.

Q: In your view, what makes a good summer camp?

that’s simply sharing Crayons or learning how to go on a field trip.

A: There’s two sides to this, because parents have different needs than kids. Any summer camp needs to be safe, which is why RARA keeps a strict counselor-to-camper ratio. All staff involved are background checked, CPR and first aid certified, and thoroughly trained.

For our older kids, they’re able to learn a wider swathe of lessons. Leadership skills really grow during this time, as we’ve seen with some of our counselors-in-training and our older campers. In a supervised fashion, campers are able to grow and experiment with different activities, including crafts, games, physical activity and STEM. This gives them a chance to try something they might not have ordinarily tried, helping them to develop a better sense of self.

It’s a bit harder to list everything that makes our camps fun for kids — there’s so much!

Programs vary throughout the summer for different ages, but it’s important that we offer a range of opportunities to each child. From arts and crafts to STEM and so much more, we’re always expanding our offerings based on camper feedback.

Q: What is your advice if a parent is nervous about sending their child to Day Camp for the first time?

Virtual babysitting safety This class is open to those 9-15 years old.

Learn to be safe and responsible, build confidence, and have a competitive edge over other babysitters with this one-day live virtual class, taught by Live Safe Academy.

This one-day class is open to those 9-15 years old. Participants will learn to be safe and responsible, build confidence, and have a competitive edge over other babysitters.

This is a one-day class open to participants ages 9-15. Students will learn pet first aid and become a certified Pet Sitter in this course, taught by Live Safe Academy.

Topics will include include first aid, when and how to call 911, CPR with manikin practice, choking, dealing with difficult behaviors, basic care methods like feeding and diapering, marketing and much more!

Students who successfully complete the course requirements are certified in the Live Safe Academy Certified Babysitter/CPR/ First Aid course.

This is an add-on course for students who participate in the Certified Babysitter/CPR/ First Aid course on the same day (students of a previous course can become a certified petsitter by taking the virtual petsitting safety course). This program begins after the Babysitting Safety class ends.

Parents, courses #0003 and #0005 will end between 2 PM and 3 PM depending on when students complete the course requirements. Students need a lunch, snacks, and a cell phone (if they own one).

Beginning piano class Want to play the piano, but not sure where to start? The Simply Music piano method will get you playing great-sounding music from your first lessons! This playing-based method puts the emphasis on playing, rather than sight-reading.

basic drawing series In this 4-week course, designed for artists ages 9-17, students will learn the basic skills of drawing in a fun and educational way.

Each session focuses on a specific technique such as contour lines, shading, gestural drawing and urban sketching. Participants will also receive weekly handouts with suggested homework to reinforce what is learned in class.

Registration fees include a drawing kit with 7 pencils, a drawing book, kneaded eraser, pencil sharpener, ink pen, pencil case, tortillion and carrying pouch.

craft and vendor show RARA’s Craft and Vendor Show is back and accepting applications for our May event! All applications must be received

by March 1, 2022. All crafters/vendors will be contacted via email the first week of March on whether their application has been approved. Further instructions will be provided at this time, and payment will be taken at this time.

Applications can be found on RARA’s website under the ‘Events’ tab. Booths located in the Fieldhouse are 10x10 and cost $30. Double spots are available for $50 per booth, but these spots are limited. $50 10x10 booths in the lobby are also available on a limited basis. Electricity spots are an additional $10. Tables can be rented from RARA for $12, and vendors are welcome to bring their own tables.

Set-up runs from 7:30am - 9:30am on the day, and the event is open from 10:00am 3:00pm. This show is a great way to connect with the local community, so don’t delay!

Join Paint Creek Center for the Arts for a fun class. This course is taught by Paint Creek Center for the Arts and is designed for children 3-6 years. Young artists will be introduced into the fun world of artistic expression, creation, and even art history!

This course is designed for children 1824 months, and is taught by Paint Creek Center for the Arts. This class will introduce art to very young artists, while also helping to develop their gross and fine motor skills.

A variety of materials will be handled and imagination is encouraged, and parents must stay for the entire class.

Students will develop gross and fine motor skills, as well as learn the fundamentals of “making” and “doing” this language we call ART. Handling a variety of materials properly and imaginative exploration will be encouraged. Students must either be potty trained or have a parent present throughout the class.

Mini musicians: babies-only class This class is for families with infants from birth through 8 months. This is a onesemester introduction to Music Together and to early childhood music development.

Linocut print workshops

Designed for young artists ages 8-13, participants will spend the evening learning to draw a beautiful unicorn! Techniques will be explained and demonstrated, and handouts will also be provided so artists can continue practicing their new skills at home.

Join us for our linocut printing workshops!

Participants will use small pieces of carved soft block linoleum, like a stamp, to create pictures and scenes. These can be used again and again to make prints! Materials will be provided.

Participants must have a drawing book, 2B, 4B and 6B pencils, pencil sharpener, blending tortillion and eraser. Alternately, these items are available for purchase as a kit for $15, which also includes a carrying pouch and pencil case.

Acrylic pour workshop Please note that artists under 18 must be accomplained by an adult. Open to artists ages 14+, learn the art of acrylic pouring at this workshop! Led by Paint Creek Center for the Arts, this workshop teaches the “dirty pour” and “ribbon pour” techniques, as well as additional acrylic skills.

Participants are encouraged to come dressed for a mess, as each artist will paint two canvases. Paintings will require 3-5 days to fully dry, and participants can collect their paintings after this time.

RARA will rent out tables (2.5” x 6”) at your request for $12, but you are welcome to bring your own. Pre-registration is only required for sellers. Each booth is $20, or $35 for two spots. Limit two renters per booth.

Accessibility at RARA

Josephine Falzetta shares her experiences enrolling her son in RARA SCAMP, a summer camp for individuals with disabilities.

For over 25 years, RARA has run its SCAMP summer camp program every summer for children and young adults with disabilities. SCAMP operates on a 3:1 counselor-to-camper ratio, prioritizing both safety and summer fun for campers 5 - 26 years old. Josephine Falzetta enrolled her son, Salvatore, in SCAMP about 7-8 years ago, and they’ve been coming back ever since.

Q: In your view, how has participating in SCAMP benefitted Salvatore?

A: He was able to have fun without us! He was happy to go do something that was his, independent from his family — the same way his older brother was able to be with

friends and do all kinds of activities. This is his social time.

Q: Is there a standout memory from Salvatore’s time at SCAMP that you’d like to share?

A: When he told me, “goodbye mom, pick me up later,” I knew he was having fun!

Q: How would you describe the SCAMP environment?

A: Wonderful! The environment makes it easy for them to make friends, but we know our kids may lack the skills to make that happen sometimes. SCAMP sets it up for them to ... utilize the opportunities if they can, and if they can’t, the activities and counselors help them connect and interact and enjoy it too!

Q: Based off your experiences, would you recommend SCAMP to other parents?

A: Absolutely! This environment is fun, has an array of activities and a positive vibe.

After a year of school and therapies with demands and goals and expectations, our kids need a camp just to have fun!

SCAMP will be returning this summer!

Camp will run Mondays - Thursdays each week from June 20 - July 28, with no camp on July 4. Information will be sent to returning families in the beginning of 2022, and more information will be available on RARA’s website as the date approaches.

annual SCAMP bowling fundraiser

Adaptive fun with animals!

On February 5, please join RARA and local vendors at Avon North Hill Lanes for our annual SCAMP Fundraiser! Proceeds benefit RARA SCAMP, a summer camp for children and young adults with disabilities.

This program is designed for individuals 14 years and older with special needs. Join RARA for a fun session with a Rochester Hills naturalist, learning about animals that can be found within our communities!

Each ticket includes 2 pieces of pizza, pop, access to a cash bar, and 3 games of 9pin notap. There will also be monetary prizes for first and second game mystery and men and women’s high series! There are also plans for a silent auction, ticket raffle and 50/50.

The naturalist will provide animal skins, pelts and other props for participants to experience.

Bowlers and donors/sponsors are needed, and both donation and registration forms can be found by clicking on this listing.

adaptive nature hike This program is designed for individuals 14 years and older with special needs. This light hike in the woods is led by Ms. Wendy and a Rochester Hills naturalist!

instructional basketball This 9-week program is designed for participants ages 8 and up with special needs. This program is aimed at players new to basketball and those that need to work on basketball skills and teamwork skills.

Participants should wear gym clothes and athletic shoes, and bring a water bottle/ sports drink to practices.

Players start off with conditioning and instruction to prepare for league play and playoffs. Participants should wear gym clothes and athletic shoes, and bring a water bottle or sports drink to practices. A detailed schedule will be provided at a later date.
