We made it!! Can you believe it – we actually made it!

We have made it to the start line of the 2020 Surf Coast Century! After all that we have all been through I can’t tell you how stoked we are that the 2020 event can go ahead, that your training and sacrifices can be rewarded with an event to remember.

In many ways the year 2020 has been a bit like an ultra marathon - we’ve had to overcome challenge after challenge without giving up. We’ve had to support one another through the good times and the bad. Things haven’t always gone our way but we’ve not let that stop us either – we’ve kept our eye on the prize and never given up hope that we can still make it to the end, one step at a time. We congratulate you on your strength to get through.

The best part of an ultra marathon is the finish (let’s be honest!), but the tougher the journey, the bigger the reward when you make it to the end... so for those of you who reach the Century’s finish line in 2020 – you deserve icecream for ever and the proudest smile from ear to ear because you’ve overcome it all and have truly achieved something great in 2020. Well done.

Welcome from The Mayor Welcome to the 2020 Surf Coast Century!

After many months of event cancellations, this is our first ‘live’ major event to return, so this year’s Surf Coast Century feels extra special.

I know you’ve all been training extremely hard, so I’m so pleased that the event could happen. Congratulations must go to local company Rapid Ascent for all their work to make sure it is delivered in a COVID-safe way.

We are delighted to welcome participants back to our region and look forward to seeing you back on our spectacular tracks and trails.

The Surf Coast Century has long been a hallmark event for our region and our Council is pleased to again provide funding support.

Events like this not only promote health and fitness, they connect people with nature, their passion and with others.

They do wonders for our mental health. Events will play a critical role in our region’s COVID recovery, not just in an economic sense, but also in reconnecting us.

COVID-SAFE EVENT PLAN SUMMARY: We take the risks of COVID-19 very seriously and require everyone to be aware of and follow the steps and procedures explained throughout this Event Program document. Please ensure all event attendees have read it carefully before attending the event.

DO NOT ATTEND THE EVENT if you: • display any COVID symptoms or are awaiting the results of a COVID test • have been in contact with a COVID case or suspected COVID case within the last 14 days • have returned from overseas or a designated COVID hotspot within the last 14 days • we ask that everyone attending the event to download and use COVIDsafe app on their mobile phone FOLLOW SOCIAL DISTANCING • all event attendees must practice social distancing at the event and maintain groups of less than 50 people • all group gatherings to be no more concentrated than 1 person per 4sq/m. If in doubt then please remain 1.5m apart and follow the social distancing signage and protocols • no person-to-person contact at the event – such as high 5’s, hugging and handshakes. Elbow bumps only • masks: all runners, spectators and support crew must carry a mask at all times. Please wear a mask if you are unable to social distance PERSONAL HYGIENE • use the hand wash / sanitisation stations established at checkpoints, the finish and other areas • respect others and help leave toilets, shared surfaces and common touch points clean. Use the gloves and disinfectant provided to help staff keep things clean and safe • please bring your own supplies rather than relying on shared items – such as race food, water, cups, water bottles, pens and paper…

Teams / runners / supporters seen breaking any COVID-safe rules will receive a warning and 30min penalty for first offence and will be disqualified and asked to leave the event immediately for second offence.

EVENT CENTRE Location: Anglesea Green (located next to Anglesea Bowls Club), Anglesea Victoria. (Located directly opposite the main Anglesea shops on the Great Ocean Road) Car Parking recommendations: • In the gravel car park beside the Event Centre area and surrounding side streets • Public car parks beside the Anglesea riverbank and near the river-mouth • The side streets off the Great Ocean Road • Do NOT park on YELLOW lines (illegal) and please be conscious of residents and local traders.

• Obey parking restrictions – the by-laws officers will be booking people Facilities / Activities at Event Centre The set up at the Event Centre will be smaller than previous years to comply with our COVID-safe plan but will still provide the opportunity to celebrate your mighty accomplishments. COMPETITOR BRIEFING 7:00pm Friday 4th December. We will not be conducting a physical briefing you can attend (due to group gathering limits) but will provide a briefing live on the Rapid Ascent Ultra Running Event Facebook page. You can ask questions live via the comments box that we will respond to. The briefing will be recorded and available on the page afterwards as well.

RACE PRESENTATIONS Due to group gathering limits we will not conduct a physical presentation ceremony you can attend, instead we will conduct a virtual ceremony live on the Rapid Ascent Ultra Running Event Facebook page where we will read the results and ‘award’ trophies and prizes online. Ceremonies will be: • 50km and 100km solo presentations: 10:00am Sunday morning.

• 100km relay teams presentations: we will award winners and podium getters on the finish line on Sunday Solo podium getters must come past the race registration marquee after 10:00am on Sunday to collect your trophies and prizes or make arrangements for them to be posted to you (at your own cost).

COMPETITOR REGISTRATION (Race Pack Collection) 1:00pm – 8:00pm, Friday 4th December in the event centre Registration will be conducted in a modified format so we do not exceed group gathering limits of 50 people together: • Competitors must attend registration during the specific time period relevant to them, as outlined below.

• 100km and 50km Solo runners - you can bring up to 5 people with you to registration (so a max of 6 people per entry) • Team runners - all team members can attend plus 1 extra person per team runner (so a max of 8 people) • All on the day entries and team / entry changes to be completed on competitors own mobile device.

EG: plate #234-1 is for the team runner doing leg 1, #234-4 is for the team member doing leg 4.

• Timing chip on a velcro strap • Timing chip must be attached to your ankle for the duration of the event.

• There is ONE timing chip per relay team – it is your relay “baton” to be swapped over to your new runner within the designated checkpoint area.

ON COURSE NUTRITION AND CHECKPOINT TYPE To avoid common touch points and remain COVID-safe we require competitors to follow these procedures at checkpoints in 2020: • Runners cannot handle the provided race food but must be served the food they want by a designated volunteer. Race food will be served in small, single serve paper / plastc bags.

• Runners cannot touch the water drums or taps. Runners must hold their water bottle / bladder while only a volunteer touches and operates the tap There are three types of checkpoint along the courses that serve the race food listed below.

Intermediary Race Points: CP1, CP3, CP5 and CP7

Items available: • Tailwind Nutrition powder. You can mix your own to your preferred strength • Sandwiches – sweet and savory • Bananas • CLIF Bars • Fruit cake and/or honey and oat slice • Snakes and lollies • ‘Shapes’ dry biscuits and potato chips (CP3, CP5, CP7)

Race Kitchens: CP2, CP4 and CP6.

Unmanned water points: CP3A and CP4A

There will be drums of water and / or a tap with drinking water at these locations. There will be no marshals here and support crews cannot provide any assistance at these locations.

DROP BAGS The drop bag service is a great way to get your items to each checkpoint without a support person. Because solo support crews cannot go to CP2 they are the ONLY WAY for solo 100km runners to get your items to CP2.

Drop bags will be transported from the event centre in Anglesea to the following Check Points and back: • To / from CP2 – 21km point at Torquay Surf Beach • To / from CP4 – 49km point at Anglesea Green (or drop them off on race morning yourself) • To / from CP6 – 77km (27km pt for 50km runners) at Moggs Creek Drop bag procedure for 100km and 50km solo runners: 1. Come to the bag drop area in the event expo and collect the appropriate bag tags for your gear: • Red (CP2) / Green (CP4) / Blue (CP6) 2. Write your name and race number on the bag tag(s) and ensure your bag is sealed so nothing can fall out 3. Put your labeled bags in the appropriate drop bag enclosure in the Event Centre on Friday before 8:00pm. (A small number of drop bags may be dropped off on Saturday morning but Friday night is distinctly preferred.)

NOTE: • Bags will NOT be transferred between CP’s (ie, not from CP2 to CP6) nor to CP1, CP3, CP5 or CP7.

• Bags must be closed, max 10kg, no bigger than 50cm x 50cm (We recommend those blue, supermarket cooler bags that zip shut. Plastic boxes will not be accepted).

• Bags will be laid out in number order at each Check Point.

• Bags will be transported BACK to the Event Centre during the course of the event.

Drop bags procedure for 100km relay team runners: • The procedures outlined for solo runners above also relate to Team Runners, but drop bags will only be accepted between 9:00am and 12:00pm on Saturday (otherwise they will get mixed up with the solo runners’!

THE COURSE Course Markings It is up to the runner to KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR AND FOLLOW THE COURSE MARKINGS to follow the course.

Courses will be marked with: • RED and/or ORANGE ARROWS (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees or bushes) • FLUORO PINK or RED PLASTIC surveyor’s tape and reflective tags (tied to trees or bushes) • RED and WHITE barrier tape across a track / road marking the wrong way. Do NOT cross red and white tape.

• In the DARK: Sections of the course will also be marked with SILVER and / or RED reflective tape tied to trees, as well as (infrequent) reflective arrows.

Course GPS file and FREE mapping app We strongly encourage all runners to set up your telephone (or GPS watch) with the free mapping app ‘Maps.ME’ and import the course GPS file (available on the website) so you can easily refer to it if you are concerned about where to go. This is free and easy to set up and does not require phone reception.

• 4x wave starts of 40-50 people each. Each wave start will be numbered and consist of: 1. The fastest 25% of runners 2. Capable runners in 25% - 50% estimated finish time 3. Casual runners in the 50% - 75% estimated finish time 4. Leisurely runners with slower 75% – 100% estimated finish time • Waves start will be 2min apart, starting from 7:30am • Runners waiting for their wave start must gather at their designated wave start sign on the beach, approx. 50m back from the start arch. We will call you forward to the start line when appropriate • Runners will be advised of their start time via e-mail in the week of the race, and on lists on the website and on the event notice board in the Event Centre. COURSE DESCRIPTION Great Ocean Road Real Estate Leg 1: 0km – 21km

(100km runners only) Distance: 21km Elevation gain / loss: 105m Terrain style: Along a mixture of wide gravel path (Surf Coast Walk), hard sandy beach and inter tidal zone with some technical terrain over reefs and rocks. It starts with a couple of short hills but flat from the 8km pt. You WILL get wet feet and there may be some pools you have to negotiate that can be waist/chest deep.

Leg start point: Race Start (Anglesea Main Beach) Leg finish point: CP2 at Torquay Surf Beach Rotary Rotunda Check Points: An intermediary race kitchen at CP1 (10.5km) Cut off: 100km solo runners on Saturday: 11:15am. 100km relay team runners on Sunday: 11:30pm 100km Start route: All 100km runners start Anglesea Main Beach facing west and complete a 4km loop going up past the Surf Life Saving Club, along Surf Coast Walk to Point Roadknight and back along the beach past the start.

Course change for 2020: Leg 1 will not go on the beach below the ‘Demons Bluff’ line of cliffs located between the 4.2km - 8.6km points due to current instability and frequent collapses in this section of the cliffs. Instead, runners will leave the beach at the 4.2km mark and follow the Surf Coast Walk that parallels the cliff edge through to the Red Rocks headland and rejoin the ‘original’ course at the 8.6km point. We have made this change at the request of GORCC to protect everyones safety.

High tide detour contingency: Depending on swell and beach conditions on race day runners may be detoured onto the cliff top tracks between “Steps/Boobs” stairs (17km pt) and the north side of Rocky Pt (20km pt). This detour may be activated during the event, so earlier runners may stay on the beach whilst later runners may take the detour, but both routes are the same length. Detours will be clearly marked and supervised by race officials.

MINI Countryman Leg 2: 21km – 48km (100km runners only)

Distance: 27km Elevation gain / loss: 520m / 520m Terrain style: A mixture of gravel footpaths and narrow single track through the bush. Whilst not exactly hilly, this section is best described as undulating.

Leg start point: CP2 at Torquay Surf Beach Rotary Rotunda Leg finish point: CP4 at Anglesea Green Check Points: An intermediary race kitchen at CP3 (31km pt), and an unmanned water station CP3A (40km pt).

Cut off: 100km solo runners on Saturday: 4:15pm. 100km relay team runners on Sunday: 3:30pm Note: runners must stop and wash the soles of your shoes at the 3 x PC Wash locations on Leg 2. This is a mandatory shoe hygiene procedure to assist in the control of ‘Die Back’ or Phytophthora. Please use the Parks Victoria provided wash station.

La Sportiva Leg 3:

48km – 75km (100km runners) / 0km – 27km (50km runners) Distance: 27km Elevation gain / loss: 760m / 720m Terrain style: A mixture of 2WD, 4WD and single tracks through more remote sections of the coastal bushland (with extensive wildflowers all around). This is the hilliest leg of the race and the crux of the course.

Leg start point: CP4 at Anglesea Green Leg finish point: CP6 at Moggs Creek Picnic Ground, Boyd Ave, Moggs Creek Check Points: An unmanned water point CP4A (58km/8km pt) and intermediary race kitchen at CP5 (68km/19km pt) Cut off: 100km solo runners on Saturday: 10:30pm. 100km relay team runners on Sunday: 7:30pm Great Ocean Road (GOR) Bridge: all 100km runners must go under the GOR bridge at the 49km mark. 50km runners start on the inland side of the road so don’t need to cross it in 2020.

50km start: The 50km race start is at Coogoorah Park on River Reserve Rd, 1km inland from the Event Centre.

CLIF Bar Leg 4:

75km – 99km (100km runners) / 27km – 51km (50km runners) Distance: 24km Elevation gain / loss: 426m / 466m Terrain style: Another mixture of 2WD, 4WD tracks and single track that returns you to the beach for a stint along the sand to the finish. This has a hilly start but a flat finish.

Leg start point: CP6 at Moggs Creek Picnic Ground.

Leg finish point: the FINISH LINE at the Anglesea Green, Great Ocean Road.

Check points: an intermediary race kitchen at CP7 (84km / 35km pt) at Aireys Inlet Skate Park.

Cut off at CP7: 100km solo runners on Saturday: 12:30am Sunday 100km relay team runners on Sunday: 9:30pm Great Ocean Road (GOR) Bridge: all 100km and 50km runners must go under the GOR bridge at the 83km (34km) mark. *Note: Sunset is 8:35pm. Head torches must be worn once dark.

SPECTATORS AND SUPPORT CREW We are excited to advise that support crews ARE permitted at the 2020 Surf Coast Century, with some restrictions and consideration of our COVID-safe plan and group gathering limits.

Notes for all support crew and teammates assisting runners: • You must practice social distancing and remain at least 1.5m apart • All group gatherings must be less than 50 people and be no more concentrated than 1 person per 4 square metres • If you are unable to social distance and/or fulfill the above requirements (eg. when servicing your runner) you must wear a mask or disperse Support crews are able to assist the following runners as described:

100km solo runners:

• 1 support crew person per runner permitted • Support crews can see your runner from Bells Beach (25km pt on Leg 2) onwards – please do not try to see them before this point • Support crews can physically assist your runner at CP3, CP4, CP5, CP6, CP7 in the designated checkpoint area. (NOTE. Bells Beach is not a checkpoint, you can see them here but you cannot assist them).

• Support crew cannot assist runners at any other location on the course – but you can see them and give them a cheer elsewhere

50km solo runners:

• 1 support crew person per runner permitted • Support crews can physically assist your runner at CP5, CP6, CP7 in the designated checkpoint area • Support crews can see your runner at any point along the 50km course – but you can only assist in the checkpoints

100km relay teams runners:

• Teammates permitted to physically assist one another at CP2, CP3, CP4, CP5, CP6, CP7 in the designated checkpoint area. You cannot assist them anywhere else.

• Only the teammates in your own team can assist you. No other spectators, family members of support crew can support you or see you along the course

At the finish line

• 100km and 50km Solo runners: A maximum of 5 additional people can watch you at the finish line (meaning 6 people per solo runner total) • 100km team runners: A maximum of 7 additional can watch you at the finish line (meaning 8 people per team including the leg 4 runner total) • Only go to the finish around the time your runner is expected, not hours in advance.

RACE MAP LIVE TRACKING We will be using GPS tracking software during the race that allows you to track runners along the course using YOUR MOBILE PHONE as the GPS tracker. Coverage along much of the course is very good (except mid leg 3) so this allows you to watch the race and see where your team mates are in real time.

1. Download the ‘RACE MAP’ app onto your phone 2. Enter the following code into the Search bar at the top of the home screen: • 50km and 100km solos: GUIHL1 • 100km relay teams: LAHG6J 3. Enter your name and/or race number in the login fields to register as a runner 4. Scroll down to the ‘Surf Coast Century’ in the list of events (Note: select Saturday or Sunday depending what event you are doing / watching) and click START LIVE TRACKING when you start running. That’s it!

• Remember to click ‘Pause Live Tracking’ once you’ve finished your run!

5. Spectators: Click ‘Watch Now’ to see all runners if you are just a support crew • NOTE: Sometimes you may need to go back to the intro screen and click ‘Watch Now’ again to refresh the map to see more runners.

Running the app does drain your phone battery more than normal so we encourage solo runners to only track the last ~6-8hrs of your run so it lasts until the finish OR carry a small powerpack with you. We strongly encourage everyone to register your phone and track yourselves whilst racing (and then turn off the tracking when stopped teams!).

The picnic area is approx. 500m in on the left. From Torquay, drive towards Jan Juc on the Surf Coast Highway and keep going, turn left at the roundabout onto the Anglesea Road and then turn left onto Point Addis Road. The picnic area is approx. 500m in on the left.

Parking: Small car park at the picnic area, or park on the Point Addis Rd verge. Please park well off the road

Drive past the ’top shops’ in Aireys Inlet and down the hill then turn right onto Bambra Road. Follow this 2.4km along the valley and then turn left onto Bambra Rd and 400m later turn left into the picnic area and CP. Parking: There is a small car park at the checkpoint picnic area and neighboring picnic areas, or park on the side of Bambra Road.

CP6 – 75km (100km) 27km (50km)

Where: Moggs Creek Picnic Area, end of Boyd Ave What: Leg end, team change point and Race Kitchen Cut off: 100km solo runners on Saturday: 10:30pm.

100km relay team runners on Sunday: 7:30pm Access limitation: We ask that only one car per runner visits this CP due to limited parking.

Driving directions: From Anglesea, drive out of town on the Great Ocean Road towards Aireys Inlet and Lorne.

Keep going through Aireys Inlet and continue 2.5km past the bridge over the Inlet and then turn right onto Old Coach Rd. Turn almost immediately left and follow Old Neuk Rd through the bushland houses and then turn left at the T intersection 600m later, signposted Moggs Creek Picnic Area. Follow this dirt road a further 800m to the picnic area at the end.

Parking: There is a small car park at the picnic area at the road end, or park on the side of the road and walk 500m to the CP.

CP7 – 84km (100km) 35km (50km)

EQUIPMENT Mandatory Gear List (for 100km and 50km competitors)

For ALL runners at all times - solo and relay team members: • A face mask - to be carried with you and worn when you stop and can’t socially distance • Race number plate. To be worn on your front, attached to the outermost garment at all times.

• First Aid Kit* (minimum contents 2 x crepe bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 1 x triangular bandage, 2 x non stick wound dressing pads and a pair of surgical gloves).

• Space blanket* • Whistle* • Mobile phone • 1 x windproof jacket – Goretex or similar waterproof / breathable fabric strongly recommended.

• Water container minimum 750ml capacity (may be a water bottle or bladder in a backpack) • A head torch when on the trail after sunset (8:23pm) • Long sleeve thermal top – Polypropylene, wool or similar thermal fabric – not cotton, lycra or any ‘compressions’ garments. • Solos who miss a cut off must skip the next leg but they may re-continue from the following checkpoint as an unranked runner • If the last cut off is missed, then competitors must make their way via alternative means to the finish line.

RULES The following rules apply to the Surf Coast Century 2020 event weekend: • All event attendees are required to follow the COVID-safe plans as outlined in the event program and advised at the event. Teams / runners / supporters seen breaking any COVID-safe rules will receive a warning and 30min penalty for first offence and will be disqualified and asked to leave the event immediately for second offence. It is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure support crews follow these rules.

• (all participants) must read and sign the Participant Indemnity • Juniors only – (under 18 on race day) must have their parent or guardian advise the organisers, Rapid Ascent, of their intention to enter, must comply with the Under 18 entry requirements as published on the event website and the parent or guardian must read and sign an authorisation and indemnity.

• Competitors must follow the complete course as marked and directed. Taking shortcuts or using any unfair means of obtaining an advantage over other competitors will result in disqualification. It is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure that the correct course is followed.

• Your race number must be visible at all times on the outside of your clothing (at the front).

• Races numbers are non-transferable. Times will not be recognised if racing under another entry/name.

• Competitors may only receive external assistance on the course from their support crews or team mates as described in this event program. 30min penalty for any team competitors who’s support crew does otherwise.

• One competitor cannot provide assistance in forward progression through physical pushing / pulling / towing / pacing, or the giving of food or drinks to a competitor in another category except in emergency circumstances.

• Australian Road Rules apply at all times on all roads, tracks and trails.

• You must carry the Mandatory Gear as specified in the equipment list. A 30 minute penalty will apply for any (and every) item found missing during any random gear checks and you will not be allowed to continue until the item is replaced. You can expect random gear checks to be made during the race.

• Relay teams can only change over at the designated checkpoint locations – after their team mate has arrived.

• Relay teams must transfer their timing chip within the designated checkpoint area.

• Competitors are responsible for the actions of their support crew and may be penalised for actions or breaches of the rules by their support crew.

• Support crews and team mates are not permitted to run with or pace runners.

• Any competitor who withdraws from the race MUST notify an official. This is an essential requirement to avoid unnecessary searches being conducted and emergency services being engaged.

• All runners are permitted to lodge protests against results or decisions enforced during the event. A judging panel of three Rapid Ascent staff members will adjudicate on all protests and other contentious matters, and their decision will be final. Protests must be lodged within 30 minutes of the competitor crossing the finish line.

• Rapid Ascent has sole discretion to alter or amend the race rules in order to increase the safety of participants or for any other reason deemed appropriate.

• If the race is canceled or called off after it has started, it is each competitor’s responsibility to get themselves to the start / finish area as soon as you have been notified of the cancellation.
