Efterskole life A year at an efterskole is a social and academic year, where friendships for life are founded Values The tree of life is the logo of Ranum Efterskole College. The tree symbolises the diversity and the broadness of the school. The root and the trunk symbolise the community, whilst the circle symbolises the global. Learners will experience moving out onto the thin branches, discover and grab experiences and excitement to bring back to the community. The large image over the entrance to our Assembly Hall consists of 19 thousand small pictures of members of staff and learners from Ranum Efterskole College from current and previous years. Every image is a pixel in the grand picture. The rainbow colours represent diversity and the ability to be different. A COMMUNIT Y THAT COMMITS A large community requires boundaries and we build our interaction on trust and respect. It is of utmost importance that teachers and learners collaborate on securing a great stay for everyone. This also means that bullying, alcohol, drugs and smoking are prohibited. We stress that learners take initiative in relation to activities for each other and all great ideas are rewarded with chocolate. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is yet another way of recognising the learners who make an extra effort for others.

LE ARNERS CLE AN THEIR OWN ROOMS and keep their own common areas tidy. Contact-groups takes turns in preparing breakfast and for one week during the school year all learners will have kitchen and practical duties. WEEKENDS ARE FLEXIBLE AND THERE WILL BE OPPORTUNITIES to do activities and relax. Some weekends are obligatory staying-weekends, with classes or activities such as Open Day weekend. Many of our learners come from far away and many learners will choose to stay at the school for 2-3 weeks at a time. Every month will have a long weekend or holiday for learners to go home or to host families. In relation to the long weekends and holidays, learners have the opportunity to use the school’s bus service that runs to major transport hubs in Padborg, Vejle, Herning, Viborg, Hobro and Aalborg Airport.

World kitchen

Voluntary work

At Ranum Efterskole College, we prioritise healthy food, sustainability and local ingredients. We collect gastronomical experiences and we find our inspiration from the many travels and our guests from all over the world.

We collaborate with the refugee center in Ranum by providing Danish lessons, childrens’ activities and a garden project. This collaboration is called DUNA (Dansk Undervisnings Netværk for Asylansøgere).

The kitchen caters also to those with special requirements such as vegans and vegetarians, as well as those with allergies.

Learners can volunteer if they wish to, and will receive a diploma at the end of the school year for their work.

Testimonials from learners... Martin Nielsen 15/16 “I have really benefitted from being in the international programme, which gave me an opportunity to experience many different cultures first hand, improve myself academically and develop my social skills at a completely different level. REC has shown me how diversity and an open mind can result in a strong community.”

Amalie Berthelsen 15/16 “Every morning waking up, I would remember where I was with a smile on my face! Every single day was good in one way or another. I am glad that Ranum is a big school! There was always someone to talk to, which meant that you very quickly made new friends - both Danish and International friends. It was the best year of my life, and you will not be able to understand it untill you try it.”

Sarah Højen 15/16 “Even with more than 400 learners, it felt like we were one big family. The relationship to our teachers was special and something I will never forget. It did not feel like a conventional teacher/learner relationship as the one I was familiar with from primary school, but more like I was part of a huge family at Ranum. I have developed so much during this efterskole year.”

Clubs and free time

Common events

Every evening offers a variety of activities and clubs. Clubs starts a 19.30 after dinner and study hour. Programmes changes according to the season, and learners can suggest new club activities throughout the school year.

Once a month, all learnes participate in a common event at the school - such as the Colour Party, the Harvest Festival or the Galla. During the school year, some of the school weeks are themed - themes could be Sustainability, Music, Drama or Performance.

Some of the activities include climbing, basketball, badminton, handball, soccer, beach volleyball, sailing and wakeboarding just to name a few.

Four times a year, the school will host concerts with up-coming bands and musicians.

Emma Skydt Nielsen 15/16 “Due to the different academic levels in our classes, I received lessons at my individual level with others who were at the same level as me. This gave me an opportunity to challenge myself and benefit from all of my subjects and it made me want to learn more. Teachers are special and they become a huge part of your everyday life. During classes they are your teachers - during your free time, they are your friends. I had never thought relations between teachers and learners could be that close, as I experienced it at Ranum Efterskole College.”

Hannah Nejsum 15/16 “I made so many close friends - not just from Denmark, but from the whole world! I became much more independent and I learned much about myself. The amazing travel experiences I had, made me see many things in a completely different perspective!”

Oscar Hildebrandt 15/16 “During my year at Ranum Efterskole, I made not only some amazing friends, but I also developed on a personal level. I have become more independent, more confident, more outgoing and gained more courage than I had before.”

Learning All subjects at Ranum Efterskole College are offered at different academic levels and we strive to create coherence between the school and the world outside.

Focus on learning

Ranum Efterskole College is an academic inter-national residential school with the mission of improving learners’ academic skills and improving learners’ ability to manage themselves in a global society. This is the reasoning behind our structure of 4x4 different academic levels within our range of subjects, so each learner will find academic subject levels that match their individual skills and impetencies, and experience a learning experience directed at their needs. We believe this approach to learning creates the best foundation for personal development.

Diversity The number of learners at the school is important for the diversity here, because we are able to offer a wide range of academic courses, subjects, co- and extracurricular at different levels. This creates the perfect opportunity for learners to create a personalised learning experience that matches their exact needs, interests and skills. All subjects are taught concurrent during the week, which means that it is possible to change level according to personal developments independent of other subjects or the course programme in general. We have learners and teachers from all over the country and from all parts of the World – which means that Ranum Efterskole College is a social community of diversity. This diversity is also what enables us to offer learning in 6 different languages and a wide range of subjects.

Global learning We combine efterskole and college; The very best from efterskole is combined with the strongest and most widespread international educational programme for 14-18 year-olds. CAMBRIDGE IGCSE AND ADVANCED LEVEL is developed by Cambridge University and are taught at more than 10.000 international schools and colleges around the world.

GREAT EX AMINATION RESULTS Learners at Ranum Efterskole College have always performed well at the international examinations and our average is well above the global average in relation to grades.

WHY INTERNATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS? We are already experiencing that English has become the primary language at most higher educational institutions and in many large corporations - in Denmark and globally. It is essential to have strong linguistic competencies and be able to collaborate with others different from you.

INTERNATIONAL GCSE AND DANISH FP9 Danish 9. IGCSE learners will complete both the International GCSE (IGCSE) and the Danish FP9. In doing so, learners are well-prepared for further study in both Denmark and abroad. It is our experience that learners have no problem completing both their Danish- and their IGCSE examinations.

INTERNATIONAL TEACHERS All academic subjects in the international programme are taught in English, and all teachers are native speaking in their respective subjects. All teachers have extensive experience in teaching IGCSEs and international learners. The teachers have a professional background from teacher training academies or university, supplemented with education and training from Cambridge CIE. INTERNATIONAL LITER ATURE AND MATERIAL S All teaching materials used are written for international learners; learners who are non-native English speaking. This is a great advantage, as the foundation for learning is to be found in this common denominator – being an international learner!

IGCSE 10th grade is assessment free according to Danish Law. Danish IGCSE 10th grade learners will though, take their IGCSE examination and FP10. We recommend that learners also complete their examinations in Math and English, but there are no official requirements. We must emphasise that special requirements may apply for learners, who do not complete FP10 Danish, English and Math, when applying for upper secondary education. International learners, who do not need the Danish FP9 or FP10, will not be required to take these examinations at the end of the school year. FUTURE? The international programme at Ranum Efterskole College is an opportunity for you to continue your studies at IB or abroad. You can also choose to spend 1-2 years more at Ranum Efterskole College in order to finish your A-levels.

Denmarks widest range of profile & culture subjects

Profile &

Nature sport & Imagination Unity is accepting others Co-curricular subjects are divided into two main profiles: Nature sport and Imagination, which combined comprises of physical and creative activities. NATURE SPORT is a Scandinavian concept of being active in the nature - where you use sport activities to practice skills. You can dive, sail, ride a horse and much more. During our travels, our skills will be put to the test. IMAGINATION is about creating creative experiences and productions, which inspires and motivates others to be participatory - this, for instance, by playing a concert in Music or creating new furniture out of old pieces in Visual Design.

Areas of interest Learners and teachers co-create unique learning processes, driven by commitment and the desire to learn together. Our co-curricular subjects are integrated into our academic classes and courses, and theory and practice are united during our travels. Ones interests changes according to learning new things and meeting new friends. Thus, we do not have the same co-curricular subjects all year. Learners and teachers suggest new subjects 3 times during the year, and then we take it to a vote. This process is a strong motivator for both learners and teachers!

The choices of profile- and culture subjects are part of the school’s pedagogical goals. We do not believe that all learners must always do the same and when we travel in smaller groups, we gain much more insight into the world.

Profile subjects The purpose of profile subjects is to practice a skill, use it and create a profile such as a dancer or diver.

Culture subjects The purpose of culture subjects is use your interests and your skills to open up to new cultures and friendships. The interaction between people and cultures is the center of the focus during the second period. SELF- PAYMENT ON TR AVEL S Subjects and travels are planned and chosen in collaboration between learners and teachers, and if a group of learners decide to travel further than what is budgetted in tuition fees, then they have the option of establishing self-payment in relation to their travels. Self-payment may vary from 0 - 12.500 DKK, and all learners must prioritise their wishes and dreams. It is possible to apply for individual financial support - in relation to school tuition but also in relation to self-payment on travels. This gives all learnes an opportunity to be part of one of the longer travels.

Ella Katrine Frederiksen 15/16 ”At Ranum, you have the opportunity to do everything! And if you do not see your specific wish among the many other subjects, there is still a chance to realise your dream. Ranum is full of passionate people, who are ready to create new subjects, as long as you have a passion too. To stand on a lone mountain top in Nepal and see the sun rise over the Annapurna mountain range, really puts things into perspective! Ranum has made me into a world citizen”

“I found an interest in travelling” Oliver Bartholdy, learner 14-15

Culture subjects 3 periods & 28 travel days The school year is divided into 3 periods - 2 profile periods and 1 culture period. Each period is finalised with a travel on 5-14 days; in total we travel up to 28 days.

Profile subject 1: Aug. - Oct. The purpose of the first period, which is chosen by the learner before the school year starts, is to prepare for the first travels. You will learn to set personal goals as well as common goals for the group to achieve. For example, we train for a Padi Open Water diving certificate in order to pass the certicate on our travels to the Mediterranean at the end of the period.

Culture subject: Oct. - Feb. In the second period, we focus on culture and world citizenship. All subjects will take focus on a country’s or a continent’s culture e.g. Europe, USA, Nepal, China etc. In each of these co-curricular, all learners are well prepared for their travels. During our travels we meet young locals, live with them and form friendships for life.

Profile subjects 2: Mar. - May The third period focusses on personal development and enlightenment, by combining content and purposes from first and second periods - for example: The dance team travels to Beijing to visit a local school as well as to experience the dance culture in Beijing. By this period the learners are experienced in forming new new subjects and do so with passion.

Oscar Hildebrandt 15/16 ”My travel to Japan in January was definitely the most awesome. It was during this period I really made some great friends at the efterskole. The things that we saw were very interesting and the teachers were nice. Especially this travel has helped me to become more independent, as we were given much freedom to experience the country and the people - also on our own”

”One of Ranum Efterskole’s greatest philosophies states that the best way to learn is to experience” Silvia Downing, 15-16

Four houses and a large community in the middle With 430+ learners enrolled, Ranum Efterskole College is now one of the largest general efterskoles in Denmark. The learners will stay at our 20,400m2 campus in 4 different houses: Kærhuset, Seminariehuset, Lien and Ranumhus. There is plenty of room for everyone! Ranum Efterskole College is located in picturesque North-West Jutland near the Western coastline. L ARGE AND SMALL COMMUNITIES 42 contact groups reside in each of the 4 houses. Each contact group consists of 10 learners, and each group is appointed a personal contact teacher. These groups eat, clean and cook together. Each contact group has a ‘friendship group’ in one of the other houses in order to encourage friendships all over the school.

168 years of history Ranum is one of the oldest educational towns in Denmark and since its foundation in 1848, more than 5000 teachers have graduated from this place. From 1987 to 2011 the school educated pedagogs. Ranum Efterskole College began in 2004 and since then filled the old halls with more than 400 learners each year. INSPIRED BY GRUNDT VIG AND KOLD The first provost of the college, Ludvig Christian Müller, was a great personality. He taught H.C. Andersen and Søren Kirkegaard, and he had socially interacted with N.F.S. Grundtvig and Kristian Kold. Thus, Ranum Teachers’ College was from the beginning strongly influenced by the learning philosophies of Grundtvig and Kold - A legacy continued to this day.

“It is a huge advantage that it is a big Efterskole, because there is always a place you fit in” Sarah Højen, learner 15-16

Strong team People with a passion We have 85 members of staff at Ranum Efterskole College. Teachers, school nurses, management, administration, kitchen and technical staff. We have different educational backgrounds, ages, experiences and competences. - That is why we have a strong team! Our staff group represents more than 8 different countries and this strengthens the international environment at the school. Many of our staff members live at the school or in the local area, and the families participate in the efterskole-life. SCHOOL NURSES A school nurse is assigned to the residential houses, who will look after those who may feel sick or those who just need to talk. YOUTH - GUIDES Youth-guides are former learners, who after having finished their guide-course, will assist in weekends and on travels. Our youth-guides know what it is

like to be young and a learner at Ranum Efterskole College. GUEST TEACHERS Ranum Efterskole College receives guest teachers from partner schools and organisations every year, just as our teachers visit other schools to teach. Our guest teachers bring new ideas and inspiration to our school. EUROPEAN VOLUNTARY SERVICE Ranum Efterskole College receives 2 volunteers every school year. The European volunteers have finished their educations, and have taken the opportunity to be a volunteer in another European country. The EVS programme is financed by the EU. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND INTERNS Each year, we receive international teacher interns and students in training for periods of up to 6 months.
