WELCOME From the President of the Rathmines 8 Rathgar Musical Society On behalf of the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society, I welcome you to The National Concert Hall.

I also w elcom e you into th e "World o f the R 8 R "- a world full of music, song and laughter. I hope you w ill enjoy being w ith us for the next fe w hours and forget the difficult times being experienced in the 'Outside World!'

The Society, now approaching its 100th birthday, has lived through many turbulent years - tw o w orld wars, a rebellion, civil war, depressions and recessions - and ye t has never failed to present a musical production each Spring and Autumn since its foundation in 1913.

As the song says: "In time, the Rockies m ay crumble Gibralter m ay tumble they're on ly made o f clay bu t - th e RSrR is h e r e to s ta y ."

I would like to thank all our Associate Members w ho have stayed w ith us through the years and w ho are a very im portant part of our Society. If you are not already an Associate Member w hy not join us and enjoy the benefits that are set out elsewhere in the programme?

MESSAGE FROM SENATOR DAVID NORRIS I d e arly hope th a t I m a n a g e to fre e s o m e space in m y busy diary to a tte n d this latest offering fro m th e R&R for the ir Spring season, H e ar Our Songs!, he re in th e w o n d e rfu l N atio n al Concert Hall.

The R&R has, since its e s tab lish m en t alm ost 10 0 years ago, b e c o m e a m a jo r contributor to th e musical th e a tre life of Dublin city an d as th e y slip closer to c elebrating 1 0 0 ye ars in 2 0 1 3 , of u n interrupted staging of shows in prestigious ve n u e s such as h e re in The N atio n al Concert Hall a n d The G aiety Theatre, I w o u ld like to o ffer th e m m y best w ishe s an d e v e ry success during this run.

The first production, Gilbert & Sullivan's M ikado,(a sh ow for w h ich I pa inted scenery for our school production), w a s staged by t h e R&R in th e Q ueen's Theatre, P earse Street, Dublin in D ec em b e r 1 9 1 3 . The fo llo w in g year, also in D e c e m b e r th e Society p e rfo rm e d for th e first t im e in The G aie ty Theatre, Dublin w ith a n o th er Gilbert & Sullivan o p e re tta The Yeomen o f the Guard. As th e Society d e v e lo p e d an d m e m b e rs h ip ex p a n d e d th e y decided to c o m p le m e n t th e Society's Gilbert & Sullivan p erfo rm ances by including o ther m usical c o m ed y productions in its repertoire.

It is o n e of the se musicals th a t I s a w th e R&R p e rfo rm in g , th a t is particularly close to m y heart. M y m o th e r used to love th e song 'La m b eth W a lk ' fro m M e and M y Girl, and I a m d e lig h te d to hear th a t it is one of the musical delights that w e are going to he ar tonight.

I ho p e the R&R continue providing th e Dublin public w ith these tre m e n d o u s shows. They m a y b e a m a te u r in status, but the professionalism is second to none a n d I wish t h e m ev e ry success in th e future.

T. P . McKENNA An Apptetiation We were sad to read of the recent death of the w ell-know n actor, I. P. McKenna.

Tom, as he was known to us, graced the boards of The Gaiety Theatre stage w ith the R&R in the early fifties. He played several roles w ith us including the 'Duke of Plaza Toro' in the 1953 production of The Gondoliers.

Forsaking his amateur status (and his steady job in the Ulster Bank) I. P. quickly developed into a very fine actor and enjoyed a lifetim e of great successes in theatre, television and cinema both here and mainly in the UK. He always acknowledged the start that the R&R gave him in his theatrical career.

We send our sincere sympathies to his family. May he rest in peace.

PRODUCTION TEAM MARINA KEALY, Choreographer Marina has enjoyed great success as a dancer and choreographer throughout Ireland having performed in all major venues and on television. Her work, being w ide and varied, includes such shows as John Player Tops Finals, Godspell, Chess, Guys an d Dolls, Joseph an d the Am azing Technicolor Dreamcoat, West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar and m any dance workshops throughout the country.

Marina's work received a nomination from AIMS for Grease and w on Best Choreographer Award from both AIMS and the Bangor Festival for her work in M e an d M y Girl. She was subsequently asked to co-choreograph the professional production of M e and M y 6 /r /a t the Olympia Theatre.

Marina has a long association with the R&R. Initially performing as a dancer in the role of Liat in South Pacific, she later successfully choreographed various shows too numerous to m ention but including The Pirates o f Penzance, the RSrR 90th Birthday Celebrations, M y Fair Lady The Yeomen o f the Guard, Gigi, The M erry Widow, Anything Goes, The Producers, HMS Pinafore and The M ikado last November. For Glasnevin Musical Society she choreographed the successful production of Chess and was Director/Choreographer for the R&R's Let's Celebrate the M agic o f the Musicals!

Marina is delighted to continue her association with the R&R as Choreographer for this season and would like to thank the entire cast for their very hard w ork and dedication over the last number of months.

GEAROID GRANT, Musical Director Gearoid Grant graduated from UCD in 1972 and since then has combined a freelance career as conductor with a career in music education. He has recently retired from teaching in the FCJ School in Bunclody where over the years he established a "school of music" with over 250 students playing in tw o very large ensembles. Gearoid started conducting in RTF over 30 years ago and has performed with RTECO and RTENSO on television, in concert halls, and even in the rain with a 6,000 strong choir in Lansdowne Road. In 1990 Gearoid devised and continues to present and conduct each year the acclaimed The Irish Times/RTE series Music in the Classroom which introduces music to 30,000 Irish children annually, with 24 performances at The National Concert Hall in Dublin and in major venues around Ireland. The programme is developed in conjunction with RTF, The Irish Times and the Department of Education.

Gearoid has conducted the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland since its inception and has never missed a concert in nearly 30 years. The Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society has had similar service. For the last 10 years he has conducted the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland (including a sell足 out concert in Carnegie Hall) and he organises and conducts the Hallelujah Christmas Concert the Point Theatre with over 9,000 children singing. When he has the tim e Gearoid conducts orchestras in Europe, America and Africa in halls from Cape Town to Boston in a w ide repertoire ranging from Mozart to Sondheim. He has no intention of stopping just yet!

JACKIE CURRAN OLOHAN - Chorus Director Jackie has a distinguished career as a performer, musician, director, chorus director and teacher. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes If Nolan at St. Mary's College, Arklow, Eithne Troy at the College of Music f UT' 1 and subsequently UCD from which she graduated w ith a B Mus. (Hons.) ^ \ ^ i she has been Music Director and Conductor for many show premieres \ V / including Anything Goes in 1991 with DAYMS directed by Brian Merriman \ / and was awarded Best Music Director at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera for Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods. This, and conducting her late father, Chris, in A nnie at the Olympia, she regards as her highlights to date. She is Musical Director of M.Y.Th. Productions, Wicklow and has appeared with the R&R, Glasnevin Musical Society, Jim Molloy Productions and Festival Productions. Sfie played 'Ruth' in The Pirates o f Penzance and subsequently 'Katisha' in Festival Production's award-winning The M ikado for which she won the Best Character Actress award at the Buxton International Festival of Gilbert & Sullivan in 2007 and subsequently returned as 'Ruth' in The Pirates o f Penzance and 'The Duchess of Plaza Toro' in The Gondoliers, a role she has also played for the R&R. Other roles for the R&R include 'The Fairy Queen' in lolanthe and 'Buttercup', "...the hilarious comic mezzo" (The Irish Times) in HMS Pinafore. Jackie's most recent appearance with The R&R was as in the role of 'Katisha' in their production of The M ikado last November.

NORA O'ROURKE, Production Manager Nora joined the R&R as ASM to Stage Manager Seamus O'Neill. She has worked in all the backstage departments including Props, Lighting, Sound, Stage Management and Production Management for the R&R in both the Gaiety Theatre and The National Concert Hall.

Nora has acted as Stage Manager and Lighting Designer/Operator for many societies and groups, notably, St. Louis, Loreto, Take Four and John Player TOPS (Aer Lingus). She has stage managed and lit many award winning shows in Waterford and Bangor. She is a recipient of an AIMS award for Best Stage Manager and has conducted workshops on Stage Management for AIMS.

MARY CREGG, Wardrobe Mistress Mary has been involved with numerous musical societies since 1977 both on and off stage. She joined the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society in 1987 performing in several shows. Working with the wardrobe team up to last year, she has now taken over as Wardrobe Mistress and wishes the Directors, Cast and Crew good luck and every success with H ear Our Songs!

EDWARD O'GRADY WALSHE, Wardrobe Master A (former) architect, Edward has performed as singer/dancer with the R&R in Fiddler On The Roof, The Gondoliers, Anything Goes, The Producers & numerous concerts. He was honoured to take over the role of Wardrobe Master from illustrious predecessors in 2009. He has performed with Katherine Lynch (live shows), Dublin Burlesque Tassel Club, G2 and is a founding Board member of Absolute Gay Theatre Festival Dublin (chair of Artistic panel). He has recently designed costumes for SMCO's Footloose. Awards include Set & Costumes for Slaughterhouse Swan (Focus Theatre).

THE CASf JIMMY DIXON - Compere Jimmy began his stage appearances w ith Wexford Light Opera Society.

Over thirty years later the roles have been many and varied. His first appearance with the R&R was in their 1987 production of Showboat a\ The Gaiety Theatre. Since then he has played m any parts and has presented and performed in many Concert Seasons at The National Concert Hall with the Society.

In the Gilbert & Sullivan cannon he has played several roles including the Major General in The Pirates o f Penzance and the 'Duke of Plaza Toro' in The Gondoliers. M ore recently he has appeared with Festival Productions in The Sound o f Music, South Pacific and Hello, D olly!\\m m y has also appeared with Glasnevin Musical Society in their presentations of The M erry W idow and je k y ll 8 Hyde.

Recent outings with the R&R include the role of 'Sir Joseph Porter' in HMS Pinafore and the Rodgers 8 Ham m erstein Concert last Spring. Jimmy returns to The National Concert Hall to round off a busy season which has included his fourth appearance as 'The Tin Man' in The Wizard o f Oz with Festival Productions at the Wexford Opera House last Christmas and his debut with Lyric Opera Productions in their critically acclaimed version of The M erry Widow, here at the NCH in February.

GARRY MOUNTAINE Garry studied singing with Dr Veronica Dunne at the Leinster School of Music and at the RIAM w ith Professor Paul Deegan.

He appeared in M ahagonny Songspiel (Opera Theatre Company, Dublin Theatre Festival) and In Company With Sondheim (Scenario, National Concert Hall). He has played many roles including 'Tevye' in Fiddler on The /?oo^ (Gaiety Theatre), 'Ramades' in The Risen People (Gaiety Theatre), 'Emile de Becque' in South Pacific (Gaiety Theatre), 'Sam Byck' in Assassins (The Beckett Theatre), 'Khruschev' in JFK (Olympia Theatre), 'The M an' in Buskin (Tivoli Theatre/Cork Opera House), 'Nathan Detroit' in Guys and Dolls (Gaiety Theatre), 'Prof. Henry Higgins' in M y Fair Lady (Gaiety Theatre), 'Honore Lachailles' in Gigi (Gaiety Theatre), 'Baron Zeta' in The M erry Widow (Gaiety Theatre), 'Ali Hakim' in Oklahoma! (Gaiety Theatre), 'Max Bialystock' in The Producers (Gaiety Theatre) and 'Daddy Warbucks' in Annie (Olympia Theatre/Cork Opera House).

Other roles include 'Joe Keller' in All M y Sons (Andrews Lane Theatre), 'Eddie Carbone' in A View from the Bridge (Andrews Lane Theatre) and 'George' in Who's Afraid o f Virginia W'oo//(The Mill Theatre). With the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company he played 'Poo-Bah' in their production of The Mikado and 'Wilfred Shadbolt' In The Yeomen o f the Guarc/(Sadler's Wells Theatre, London).

Further operatic roles include 'Dancairo' in Carmen (National Concert Hall), 'Colonel Franke' in Die Fledermaus (National Concert Hall).

Television and radio work include The Late Late Show, Live a t 3, Theatre Nights and The Derek M ooney Show. He appeared in the BBC productions of The Mikado and The Yeomen o f the Guard and has also presented and appeared in numerous concerts at the National Concert Hall. Directing credits includes The M ikado {200^), The Pirates o f Penzance (2002), Let's Celebrate (2 0 0 3 ), The Yeomen o f The Guard (2 0 0 4 ), The Gondoliers (2 00 6), lolanthe (2 0 0 8 ) HMS Pinafore (2 0 0 9 ) and The Mikado (2 0 1 0 ), all in The National Concert Hall.

PAUL KELLY Paul has sung various roles in Gilbert & Sullivan w ith th e R&R as w ell as 'Freddie' in M y Fair Lady. He has also sung regularly in the Society's concerts at The N ational Concert Hall. In addition, Paul has sung roles in operas by M o zart, H andel, Poulenc, Sm eten a, A. J. Potter and James Wilson in addition to m akin g extensive appearances in o peretta and musical com edy.

He has also ap p eared on the concert p latform in oratorio including Handel's Messiah, Bach's St. John Passion, Haydn's Creation and Elijah by M endelssohn as w ell as in recital at the John Field Room .

SANDRA KELLY Sandra studied voice w ith M ary Brennan at the DIT Conservatory of Music w h e r e she w as a w a rd e d th e gold m ed al for singing. She has also w o n m a n y prizes in th e Dublin Feis Ceoil including th e D erm o t Troy Cup for Oratorio, Stanford Cup, th e Ford-Taylor prize for Gilbert and Sullivan and th e R athm ines and Rathgar Cup. Sandra has played m a n y principal roles including 'A d ele' in Die Fledermaus, 'Laurey' in Oklahoma!, 'N ellie Forbush' in South Pacific, 'M a rian ' in Music M an and 'Josephine' in HMS Pinafore.

Sandra's radio w ork includes playing the role of 'Laurey' in the Gay Byrne Show's production of Oklahom a! She also appears in th e variety show Showtim es w hich has b een p erfo rm ed in m an y ven u es throu g ho u t Ireland.

Sandra p layed 'Tessa' in The Gondoliers, 'M agnolia' in Showboat and 'Sarah B row n' in Guys 8 Dolls in previous R&R productions at The G aiety Theatre. She has also a p p eared as a soloist w ith the R&R in the NCH in Romberg to Rodgers on tw o occasions, the R8R 90th Birthday Concert, Show Business and Let's Celebrate! ROBERT VICKERS Regarded as one of Ireland's most versatile and accomplisfied performers, Robert Vickers hails from Wicklow Town and his training includes the Gladys Sheehan Stage School, Betty Anne Norton Theatre School and the Gaiety School of Acting.

Recent theatre credits include 'Jekyll/Hyde' in Jekyll a n d Hyde, S w een ey Todd' in Sw eeney Todd, 'Sky Masterson' in Guys and Dolls, and most recently 'Joe Emmett' in M ichael Collins The Musical. Other favourite roles include 'Jesus' in Jesus Christ Superstar foi which he was awarded the coveted AIMS award for Best Actor, 'Arbiter' in Chess at the NCH, 'Riff' in West Side Story, 'Louis' in The Gondoliers and roles in I Love You, You're Perfect, N o w Change! Concert work includes Showstoppers, Gilbert 8 Sullivan Favourites with the renowned Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society at the National Concert Hall, performances in all of the major theatres throughout the country including The Gaiety Theatre, The Olympia Theatre and The Helix, Dublin.

Robert is no stranger to TV having performed on The Afternoon Show, TV3, and The Late Late Show. Radio credits include RTE Lyric FM, RTE Radio 1, RTE 2FM, and Today FM. Robert is a professional musician and an aw ard-w inning vocalist having performed with numerous groups on the Irish music scene for the last tw e lve years. Robert toured with the Irish Showband show Dance Hall Qs and Hucklebuck Shoes, recreating the golden era of the showband greats.

Following his performance in Whiskey in The Jar, Robert will be performing in the Grand Canal Theatre for the stage production. B low Lip The Liffey Bridges. He is also part of the Rock Tenors a new Irish show touring in 2011.

Robert is delighted to be performing with the R&R once again in the wonderful surroundings of The National Concert Hall and is thrilled to be working alongside such a talented cast and crew.

Robert is represented by Julian Benson Managem ent.

ANNA BRADY Anna is studying for a BA in Performance w ith Suzanne Murphy and Marek Ruszczynski at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin. She is a multiple Feis Ceoil prize-winner counting the Nancy Calthorpe Cup, the German Government Cup, the Veronica Dunne Cup and the Soprano Cup among her awards.

Anna was specially com m ended in the Mozart International Singing Competition in 2009 and was a Prizewinner in the Thomas Moore Competition in 2009. For Opera Ireland she has appeared in Don Giovanni, Romeo e t Juliet, I Capuleti ei Montecchi and sang the soprano solo as one the apparitions in Macbeth.

Notable roles to date include 'Annina' in Verdi's La TraviatawWh Loughcrew Garden Opera in June 2010, 'Edith' in The Pirates o f Penzance for GMS in September 2 0 1 0 and, more recently, 'Yum Yum' in the R&R's acclaimed production of The Mikado in Novem ber 2010. She performed the part of 'La Ciesca' in the RIAM's production of G/ann/5c/)/cc/)/in January 2011.

Anna sang at the prem iere of Kannmerpop by Fiachra White in January 2011 and will be performing a Handel cantata at The National Concert Hall with the Dublin Symphony Orchestra in May 2011. She will be performing the role of 'Ida' in Die Fledermaus wWh Loughcrew Garden Opera in June 2011.

Anna is also a m em ber of the highly successful Opera Singing Waiters and performs regularly throughout Ireland with them .

CIARAN OLOHAN A past pupil of Blackrock College, Ciaran had his first experience of G&S at age 13 w hen he played the role of 'Captain Corcoran' in HMS Pinafore under the late Fr. Jarleth Dowling. While in school, he played the role of 'Naphtali' in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and performed in tw o original productions, Ochon and Brothers in Arms, both written by Toirleac O'Brien.

As a student of Phillip O'Reilly, Ciaran received vocal coaching at the Royal Irish Academy of Music for six years. During that tim e he also received a Diploma in Performance. Last year Ciaran completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Greek and Roman Civilisation at University College Dublin.

Ciaran has performed in The National Concert Hall with Jim and Angela Molloy productions, and more recently in Lyric Opera's production of Lucia di Lammermoor. Closer to home in his native Wicklow, he has performed with M.Y.Th. Productions for the last number of years playing roles in such titles as Billy Elliot, Ragtime, Evita to name but a few.

Ciaran comes from an extrem ely musical family; he is particularly proud to be a grandson of the late Chris Curran and Josephine Scanlon, both of w h o m had very distinguished careers, including roles in the R&R many years ago. His own parents are no different, his father Sean has been involved in music all of his life, and lastly his mother Jackie (w ho you m ay already know!) has been the biggest musical inspiration in life to date.

Ciaran recently portrayed the title role in the Society's acclaimed production of The Mikado at The National Concert Hall. He is delighted to be returning as a soloist for H ear Our Songs and would like to wish everyone involved the very best of luck.

JOHN McCALL John has appeared in numerous R&R productions playing such roles as 'Fyedka' in Fiddler on the Roof, 'Will Parker' in Oklahoma!, 'Harry' in Guys 8 Dolls and 'Kevin' in The Producers all at The Gaiety Theatre. He has also featured as a soloist in several of the Society's concerts at The National Concert Hall including Romberg to Rodgers and Let's Celebrate, the M agic o f the Musicals. Other theatre credits include 'Roger' in Grease and 'Zebulun' in Joseph for M.Y.Th. Productions.

Radio credits include Barra O'Tuama Opera Gala and Richard Rodgers Anniversary Concert both for RTE. On television John has appeared in m any productions including The Seven Days o f Creation, 0 2 In The Park, Childline and The Late Late Show all for RTE - and Children In N e e d for the BBC.

Chernobyl Children International

R&R Trip to Chernobyl This April marks the 25th anniversary of the worst environmental catastrophe in the history of humanity; the explosion o f the Chernobyl nuclear station in 1986 which has devastated lives and w ill continue to do so for many generations to come. To acknowledge this anniversary the R&R are travelling to Chernobyl on the 7th April to perform a concert in the orphanage run by Adi Roche's Chernobyl Children's Project. A cast o f 12 members will also work as volunteers in the orphanage fo r a few days.

We have set ourselves a target o f raising â&#x201A;Ź15,000 for this remarkable charity which develops community, social and medical programmes to help reduce poverty and improve the livelihoods of current and future generations of Chernobyl's children. As part o f this undertaking we are asking our audiences to please make a donation, however small, so that we may reach this goal.

We have also asked other musical societies throughout the country for a small donation so th at the musical theatre-loving public of Ireland may make a generous donation to this w orthy cause.
