WELCOME F ro m t h e P r e s i d e n t o f R a th m in e s 8c R a t h g a r M u s ic a l S o c ie ty On behalf of the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society, I welcome you to The National Concert Hall and to the Society’s production of Oklahoma! This is the Society’s fourth production of this ever-green musical, the previous presentations being in 1957,1982 and 1999. Oklahoma!, with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and based on a play by Lynn Riggs Green Grow the Lilacs, is set in Oklahoma State at the beginning of the twentieth century. It opened on Broadway in March 1943 and was an immediate smash hit, setting all box office records by running for over five years. The record was eventually overtaken by My Fair Lady in 1956. In the midst of all the activities associated with the mounting of a Broadway blockbuster, such as Oklahoma! is, the members of the R&R have been inordinately busy organising the many functions proposed for next year’s Centenary Celebrations of the R&R. A list of various functions is contained in this programme, including Hello Dolly! in the Spring of 2013, The Mikado in the Autumn and ending the Centenary Year with the publication of a book entitled ‘I f You Want to Know Who We Are’which traces the eventful history of The R&R. All of that is for the next year but for now, it is Oklahoma! So sit back and enjoy!

Where the wind comes w h istliri down the plain.. Set out on the plains of the Oklahoma territory in the early 1900’s this musical tells the story of two pairs of lovers. Curly is a cowboy and secretly smitten w ith Laurey Williams: both are well-suited as their equal stubborness prevents them from admitting their feelings while Jud, the hired hand at Laurey’s farm, tries to come between them. Meanwhile her friend. Ado Annie is torn between Will Parker, a steer-ropin’ cowboy who has returned from Kansas City to claim her hand and Ali Hakim, a travelling peddler and ladies' man and who is too fond of the open road and doesn’t really want to m arry her at all...
Act 1 On a radiant summer morning in Indian Territory not long after the turn of the century. Aunt Eller sits on her porch churning butter and looking out over her farmstead when Curly, a local ranch hand, comes to call. Curly and Eller’s niece, Laurey Williams, have a lot in common - both are equally smitten w ith the other, and both are too proud and stubborn to admit it. When Curly grandly offers to take Laurey to the box social that evening, Laurey claims th at he can’t escort her in style and reftises to believe th at he has rented a classy rig for the occasion. Jud Fry, Laurey’s hired hand, settles the m atter by announcing that he will take her to the social and because she is scared of Jud, who has a morose, vindictive temperament, she is too frightened to turn him down. Curly invites Aunt Eller to ride with him. Laurey’s friend. Ado Annie, has man troube too - but of a different kind of. She finds herself caught between tw o fellows and unable to decide which one to chose! Will Parker has just returned from Kansas City where he earned $50 in a rodeo - the exact sum Ado Annie’s father, Andrew Carnes, told Will he had to come up w ith if he wanted to m arry her. However, during Will’s absence Ado Annie has become transfixed by the Persian peddler man, Ali Hakim, whose sales pitches always leave her swooning. Ado Annie may
not know which way to turn but her father does: Will, having already spent the $50 on wedding gifts for Ado Annie technically no longer has the cash and so has lost his chance at marriage -while Ali Hakim has been so forward with Annie that nothing short of a shotgun wedding will do! Laurey is confused about her love for Curly and about Jud, of whom she is terrified, but has used his invitation just to make Curly jealous. After a short reconciliation between the two, Curly goes to see Jud in his smokehouse. Curly paints a beautiful picture of just how popular Jud would be - at his own funeral! - and there is an angry confrontation about Laurey. Feeling mocked, alone now in his room, Jud confronts himself, his lonely fantasies, his bleak existence that fills him with anger and violence. Laurey still needs to clear her mind between Curly and Jud and takes a deep whiff of the expensive smelling salts she has bought from Ali to help. Her girl friends ridicule her and offer their own homely advice: eventually she sits alone and ponders her situation when Jud arrives to take her to the box social. Act II
At the box social that night lots of men bid for Laurey’s hamper but, as the bidding rises, so does the tension as Jud and Curly square off. Curly sells his saddle, his horse and then even his gun to raise enough cash to buy the hamper and the right to escort Laurey, which frustrates and angers Jud. When Jud corners Laurey in the barn later on, her frightened calls for help bring Curly to her side. Jud runs off and finally Laurey and Curly confess their love for one another. Ali Hakim, still trying to manoeuvre his way out of marrying Ado Annie, buys the gifts from Will for $50. With cash in hand, and a few rules in mind. Will approaches Ado Annie again, and this time they set the date. Three weeks later, Laurey and Curly are married. Gertie Cummings, an annoying flirt who couldn’t get her hands on Curly, has managed to also snare a husband - Ali Hakim. Will and Ado Annie are hitched as well and everyone is celebrating. The wedding festivities pall, however, when Jud Fry stumbles in, uninvited, unwelcome and drunk. He gets into a fight with Curly and, in the ensuing melee the drunken Jud falls on his own knife and is killed. Curly’s friends don’t want him to have to spend his wedding night in jail and so a trial is quickly held on the spot and Curly is acquitted. With their friends and loved ones waving them on. Garry studied drama with Ann Kavanagh at The Young Peoples Theatre Group and singing with Dr Veronica Dunne at the Leinster School of Music and at the RIAM with Professor Paul Deegan. Garry is also an established voice over artist. Featured campaigns include Lotto Millionaire, Donegal Catch and Red Bull Directing includes The Mikado (2001), Pirates o f Penzance (2002), Lets Celebrate (2003), Yeomen o f The Guard (2004), The Gondoliers (2006), lolanthe (2008) and HMS Pinafore (2009), The Mikado (2010), Pirates o f Penzance (2011), Oklahoma (2012) all in the National Concert Hall. Garry has presented and appeared in numerous concerts at various venues including The National Concert Hall. Garrys next appearance will be as an Ugly Sister in the Gaiety Panto Cinderella, and he returns to the Gaiety in April 2013 to play Horace Vandergelder opposite Rebecca Storm, in the R&R’s centenary production of Hello Dolly.

Gearoid Grant graduated from UCD in 1972 and since then has combined a freelance career as conductor with a career in music education. He has recently retired from teaching in the FCJ School in Bunclody where over the years he established a "school of music” with over 250 students playing in 2 very large ensembles. Gearoid started conducting in RTE over 30 years ago and has performed with RTECO and RTENSO on TV, in Concert Halls, and even in the rain with a 6000 strong choir in Lansdowne Road. In 1990 Gearoid devised and cwitinues to present and conduct each year the acclaimed The Irish Times/RTE series Music in the Classroom which introduces music to 30,000 Irish children annually, with 24 performances at the National Concert Hall in Dublin and in major venues around Ireland. The programme is developed in conjunction with RTE, The Irish Times and the Department of Education. Gearoid has conducted the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland since its inception and has never missed a concert in nearly 30 years. The R&R has had similar service. For the last 10 years he has conducted the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland (including a sell-out concert in Carnegie Hall) and he organises and conducts the Hallelujah Christmas Concert at the Point Theatre with over 9000 children singing. When he has the time Gearoid conducts orchestras in Europe, America and Africa in Halls from Cape Town to Boston in a wide repertoire ranging from Mozart to Sondheim. He has no intention of stopping just yet!
MARINA KEALY,

Marina has enjoyed great success as a dancer and choreographer performing throughout Ireland on television and in all major venues. Her work, ranging from musical to opera has earned her many accolades with career highlights to date including winning both the AIMS and Bangor Festival’s Best Choreographer Award for Me and M y Girl, going on to co-choreograph the professional production of the same show at the Olympia Theatre and also choreographing the Dublin premiere of the iconic show The Producers for the R&R in 2009. Marina's association with the Society began initially as a dancer and progressed to choreographing musicals and concerts at the National Concert Hall and Gaiety Theatre too numerous to mention. She has choreographed many of the Society's Gilbert & Sullivan productions over the years including the critically acclaimed The Mikado and last year’s The Pirates o f Penzance to name but a few. She is delighted to continue her association with the R&R as Choreographer for this season ana would like to thank the entire cast for their very hard work over the last number of months and is looking forward to the Centenary Celebrations in 2013.

Jackie has a distinguished career as a performer, musician, director, chorus director and teacher. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Nolan at St. Mary’s College, Arklow, Eithne Troy at the College of Music and subsequently UCD from which she graduated with a B Mus. (Hons.). By day she can be found teaching music at St. Gerard’s School, Bray, Co. Wicklow. She has been Music Director and Conductor for many show premieres including Anything Goes in 1991 w ith DAYMS directed by Brian Merriman and was awarded Best Music Director at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera for Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. This, and conducting her late father, Chris, in Annie at the Olympia, she regards as her highlights to date. As a performer Jackie has enjoyed playing many roles in the Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire including Ruth in The Pirates o f Penzance, The Duchess of Plaza Toro in The Gondoliers and Katisha in The Mikado, a role for which she received the Best Character Actress Award at The Buxton International Festival. More recently she has appeared as Carlotta in Wexford Light Opera’s presentation of Follies.
NORA O’ROURKE,

Nora joined the R&R as ASM to Stage Manager Seamus O’Neill. She has worked in all the backstage departments including Props, Lighting, Sound, Stage Management and Production Management for the R&R in both the Gaiety Theatre and The National Concert Hall. Nora has acted as Stage Manager and Lighting Designer/Operator for many societies and groups, notably, St. Louis, Loreto, Take Four and John Player TOPS (Aer Lingus). She has stage managed and lit many award winning shows in Waterford and Bangor, She is a recipient of an AIMS award for Best Stage Manager and has conducted workshops on Stage Management for AIMS.

Brian’s initial training began at F.A.C.T. Theatre School under the direction of Sean and Maureen Gilligan. Brian’s opera, operetta and musical theatre credits include Marius (Les Miserabks), Danny (Calamity Jane), Curly (Oklahoma!), Perchik (Fiddler on the Roof), Frederic (The Pirates o f Penzance) Scarecrow (The Wizard ofOz), Man 1 (Songs for the new world), Ralph Rackstraw (H.M.S. He is a Feis Ceoil winner, receiving The Percy Whitehead Cup and The Tenor Solo Cup in 2011. He is also a John McCormack Society Award recipient. He has participated in masterclasses w ith Thomas Allen, Anne Murray, Bryan Husband, Ross Campbell and Lynne Dawson. Brian is currently going into his final year of a Bachelor of Music Performance at The Royal Irish Academy of Music under Mary Brennan. He is involved w ith regular engagements and numerous projects around the country such as Kammerpop and The Opera Singing Waiters. He was delighted to be debuting with Opera in the Open this summer w ith performances of Eugene Onegin, Street Scene and Cosi Fan Tutte. Other roles include Daddy Warbucks in A nnie the Musical and Mike in A Chorus Line. He was privileged to debut The Promise at The Helix this September. Performances in the new year include Donal in The Pirate Queen, Michael Collins in Micahel Collins: A Musical Drama. Anna achieved her BA in Music Performance from the Royal Irish Academy of Music with a First Class Honours degree in June 2011. She is currently a part-time student in the Dublin Institute of Technology studying with Sinead Campbell. Anna is a multiple Feis Ceoil Prizewinner winning many awards including the Plunket Greene Cup, the Nancy Calthorpe Cup, the German Government Cup, the Veronica Dunne Cup and the Soprano Cup. Anna sang in the chorus of Opera Ireland in the operas Don Giovanni, Romeo et Juliet, I Capuleti ei Montecchi and sang the soprano solo as one of the apparitions in Macbeth. Roles include Annina (La Traviata) and Ida {Die Fledermaus) with Loughcrew Garden Opera, Yum Yum {Mikado), Laurey {Oklahoma!) with the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society, La Ciesca {Gianni Schicchi) and Semele {Semele) with the RIAM. In January 2011 Anna sang the soprano solo at the premiere of Kammerpop by Fiachra White. Anna is a Young Associate Artist with Opera Theatre Company and with them has sung excerpts from Don Giovanni as Zerlina as part of European Opera Day, Lieschen from Bach’s Coffee Cantata and covered Eurydice and La Musica from Moteverdi’s Orfeo. In August 2012 Anna performed a lunchtime concert in the National Concert Hall as part of OTC’s Young Artist recital series. Upcoming roles include Miss Furlong in Frank Me Guinness’ adaptation of The Dead by James Joyce in the Abbey Theatre, December 2012. Anna is thrilled to be back with the R&R for this production of Oklahoma! and wishes everyone the best of luck for the run!

Muriel has played a variety of leading roles in works from playwrights such as Lennox Robinson, John van Druten, Thornton Wilder, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Neil Simon, Hugh Leonard, Jennifer Johnston & Harold Pinter. She has a collection of acting awards from her many successes on the Drama Festival Circuit, including ‘All-Ireland Best Actress’ for her role as the dying wino on Skid Row, Catherine Rostak in When the Wine is Cold. She also played Maurya in Balaily Players’ All-Ireland Festival winning production of Riders to the Sea by JM Synge. Now she frequently appears at the Mill Theatre, Dundrum where she has played Mrs Webb Our Town; Mrs Kilbride By the Bog o f Cats, Kitty Curley Many Young Men o f Twenty, Chorus Romeo & Juliet, Kate Keller All My Sons; Chorus Leader & Mrs Fezziwig A Christmas Carol & Aunt Julie The Mai. John has played several roles for the R&R including, Fyedka in Fiddler on the Roof, Samuel in The Pirates of Penzance, and Harry the Horse in Guys & Dolls. He has also featured as a soloist in several of the Society’s concert performances. Other musical theatre roles include Zebulun in Joseph... and Roger in Grease, both for MYTH Productions. For RTE Television, John has appeared on The Den, Sattitude, The Seven Days o f Creation and The Late Late Show. He is delighted to reprise his role as Will Parker in this production and wishes the cast and crew every success.

Amy received her B.A. Hons. Acting from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and is currently represented by Julian Benson Management. She has been involved with Avonmore Musical Society from a young age, playing the role of Gretl in The Sound o f Music at 5 years old and has since enjoyed playing such roles as Pitti-Sing in The Hot Mikado, Queenie in HONK! and Sugar in Some Like It Hot. During her time at LIPA she portrayed such roles as Marya in The Government Inspector, Rosalind in As You Like It, Gilda in Mrs. Tilly, Flynn in Loveplay Ursula in Sweet Charity, the Lead Singer in They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? and Mole in The Wind in the Willows. Since returning to Ireland she has appeared as a soloist with the Glasnevin Musical Society in their production of Showstoppers at The National Concert Hall. Amy played a Silly Girl Festival Production’s Beauty and the Beast,'Ariel in Footloose with Stillorgan Musical Company and Pitti-Sing in The Hot Mikado with HXT Musical Society. She has also recently founded a theatre group, MUSE Theatre Company and last summer produced and directed the company’s debut show. Songs for a New World by Jason Robert Brown. For Avonmore Musical Society Amy has also played the role of Holly in The Wedding Singer, for which she was last year awarded AIMS Best Actress in a Supporting Role. She appeared on BBC’s Over The Rainbow in summer 2010 and progressed to the final 50 contestants; she was runner-up for Best Actress at AIMS 2012 for the role of Dorothy in the Wizard o f Oz. Amy will be playing the part of Belle in Beauty And The Beast with Avonmore Musical Society in April. Amy is loving her first year with the R&R and wishes the entire cast and crew the best of luck.

Originally from Arklow, Jimmy began his stage appearances with Wexford Light Opera. Over thirty-five years on the stage have provided him with a variety of roles and opportunities to appear in drama, variety and musicals as well as presenting. He has worked with many muscial societies in Dublin and elsewhere. He has played several roles in the Gilbert & Sullivan operas with The R&R including Sir Jopseph Porter in H.M.S. Pinafore. In addition, he has presented and taken part in many concerts for The R&R and enjoyed three Christmas seasons at The National Concert Hall as Tin Man in Festival Production’s presentation of The Wizard o f Oz. More recently he re-created the role of Tin Man at the Wexford Opera House followed by his Lyric Opera debut as Njegus in The Merry Widow here at The National Concert Hall where he also played the role of the Major General in their successful presentation of The Pirates of Penzance last Autumn. This he followed last Spring as the Narrator in Guys & Dolls in concert with the RTE Concert Orchestra. Jimmy has also taken part in The Percy French Story with Entertainment Unlimited in several venues over the past year. He will soon return to The National Concert Hall to play Uncle Max in Festival Production’s presentation of The Sound o f Music during the Christmas and New Year Season.

As a past pupil of Blackrock College, Ciaran had his first experience on stage at age 13 when he played the role of Captain Corcoran in H.M.S Pinafore under the late Fr. Jarlath Dowling. While in school, he played the role of Naphtali in Joseph and performed in two original productions, Ochon and Brothers in Arms (Toirleac O’Brien). In 2011 Ciaran returned to Blackrock as an Assistant Musical Director for the original production of Going Forward. (Brian Savage). As a student of Phillip O’Reilly, Ciaran received vocal coaching at the Royal Irish Academy of Music for six years, during that time he also received a Diploma in Performance. In 2010 Ciaran completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Greek and Roman Civilisation at University College Dublin, and is currently back in UCD studying for his MA in Classics.

In recent years Ciaran has performed with the chorus of Lyric Opera in such productions as Lucia di Lammermoor, Don Giovanni and II Trovatore, all at the NCH. In October of this year Ciaran appeared as a Hunter in Wide Open Opera’s production of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde’at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre. For the R&R Ciaran has performed such roles as The Mikado [The Mikado), Samuel [The Pirates o f Penzance), Harry the Horse (Guys and Dolls) and he also appeared as a soloist in R&R’s concert. Hear Our Songs. Ciaran comes from an extremely musical family; he is a proud grandson of the late Chris Curran and Josephine Scanlon, both of whom had distinguished careers, including roles with the R&R many years ago. It is a huge thrill for Ciaran to be playing the role of Jud Fry and he hopes you enjoy the show!

Colm was born and still lives in Dublin and came to singing and the stage late after injury ended an athletics career in which he had run over 31,000 miles. The competitive spirit (and lungs) having been established, he began voice training immediately with Edith Forrest. He has played such tenor roles as Camille, Mr. Snow, Phillipe, Frederick, Hilarion, Sid el Kar and others with more than fifteen different musical societies. In recent years Colm has been a regular with the R&R, captaining their HMS Pinafore in the NCH and playing Mr. Snow in Carousel at the Gaiety. Training with Sr. Peter Cronin, Colm won the tenor solo competition in the Feis Ceoil in its centenary year 1996 and made his operatic debut playing II Messaggero in Aida with Lyric Opera also at the NCH.

A native of Dublin, Emma-Mae first appeared in the Olympia Theatre at the tender age of 5 in Truly Scrumptious. Later, she stared as Glinda [Wicked) Olympia Theatre for Livewire Theatre School annual showcase. Performances as Hodel [Fiddler on the Roof}, Sandy [Grease) and Fran [Strictly Ballroom) for Stratford College Musical Society, quickly followed. Other credits include Godspellfor I.Y.A.F. at Rose Theatre, Kingston, London and Our House, for which she was also Dance Captain, at The Waterfront Theatre, Belfast. Other notable appearances include Graziella (West Side Story) at Belfast Festival and Victoria [Cats) at Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast, for the MT4Uth Group. Emma-Mae sang at the World Skills Opening Ceremony in the 02 London. She acted in the award-winning short The Blaxorcist and Unpossessed Girl for Three Way Productions. She has appeared in the music video Miracle Bell for Future Kings and recently was the voice of Teenager in I t’s the Macey's’for Brown Bag Films. Emma-Mae is a former Al-Ireland 10 Dance Ballroom and Latin Champion. She has completed Grade 7 Violin Exams and is currently studying Dance, Singing and Drama in Belfast with Musical Theatre 4 Youth. She has studied under Peter Harris (GSA), Paul Smith (Arts Ed.), Paul Madden (Bird) and Ryan Jenkins (Bird). Emma-Mae is also in her second year studying Nursing in Trinity College, Dublin.

R&R Chernobyl Charity Work
Two weeks ago, members from the cast of Oklahoma! travelled to Belarus to volunteer w ith Adi Roche's Chernobyl Children International in the Childrens Mental Asylum in Vesnova. This was the second trip that R&R members have made to Vesnova to help bring some happiness and smiles to the faces of these poor children who are the unfortunate victims of the nuclear tragedy. As a group, the members paid their ow n travel expenses and also raised â‚Ź26,000 which goes directly to providing basic items such as nappies, Sudocrem, Calpol and other simple products which are not readily available to the children. The money has also gone to the supplying of more short term CCI employed carers to help the chronic shortage of staff to give the most basic of care to the kids. It was an extremely tough and emotional experience for our R&R Volunteers but it is so w orth the effort. While sleeping on the orphanage floor by night, by day the R&R members worked tirelessly playing and interacting w ith as many kids as possible trying to bring some laughs, smiles and enjoyment to these amazing and special children. The highlight for the older kids was a small concert performed by the R&R which brought so much delight to them, as indeed, we hope tonights show brings to you. Please keep our audience in Vesnova in your thoughts.......
